Back to the Basics
By Conrad J. Obregon
There are a few books about photography that are so fundamental that every serious photographer should read them. These include books that discuss the underlying assumptions of photography that many photographers just take for granted. "The Nature of Photographs: a Primer" by Stephen Shore is such a book.

The book is deceptively simple. Shore sets out to describe "the physical and formal attributes of a photographic print" (although, it seemed to me, the work applied equally to an image on a monitor) "that form the tools a photographer uses to define and interpret...content." For example he suggests that at the depictive level there are four separate ways the camera transforms the world into a photograph: flatness, frame, time and focus. Each of the discussion points is supported by great images from photographic history, taken by photographers as diverse as Timothy O'Sullivan and Paul Caponigro.

The text is short, capable of being read in less than an hour. However a useful reading requires a lingering over the photographs presented. For example, in commenting upon a picture of a clear-cut hillside, Shore says that photographer Robert Adams could frame a picture so that a railroad track appearing in a corner could enhance the meaning of the image. When I first glanced at the picture, I looked for an obvious railroad right-of-way, but closer examination showed a single railroad track just appearing in the bottom corner. One might have thought it was unavoidably included, a mere accident. But realizing that Adams was not so casual gave a whole new level of meaning to the photograph. Moreover it suggested to me that important elements of a photograph need not be obviously highlighted, and that, just as creating a good photograph requires more time and thought than a hasty click of the shutter, exploring a photograph might require more than the usual three seconds of looking committed by the average viewer.

Shore himself is a great photographer, appearing in the seminal 1997 "New Topographics" show, but the photographs he uses to illustrate his thesis cover the entire range of imagery. The book was originally published in 1998, but Phaidon has issued reprints regularly since 2007, and the book is now available in paper-back for an almost ridiculously low price, considering the value of the content.

I'm certain many photographers will say "I know what a photograph is, and how it works." I challenge this assumption. Examine this book, its text and its images. If you can say it added nothing to your understanding of photographs, my hat is off to you.

One of the best
By Zone
One of the best photography texts, focused in its particular way (on visual properties of photographs, and to an extent their presence as objects). Its text is spare, to the point of being poetic, worth giving some real time to but not demanding of long hours of reading. That's a great balance that I appreciate. I assign this for studio photography classes and it's great for opening up various lines of thought without demanding a lot more reading than our focus can allow.

Learning to see
By Ron Milestone
Be prepared. This is not an ordinary book on photography or teaching photography. Yet it is a very effective one. The author, a famous art photographer, explores the fundamental elements of the technique in a most basic way illustrating each point with photographic examples. It forces the student or experienced photographer to re-examine the fundamentals of the task. But be aware that you will not get any technical advice: no fstops, lens markings, hyperfocal distances, etc.

Review
“In this final book in the Lunar Chronicles, the stepdaughter of the wicked Queen Levana joins Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress to defeat the Queen and restore Cinder―aka Selene―as the rightful ruler of Luna. Yes, it's another one of Meyer's very fractured fairy tales, in which she offers a new amalgam of Grimm's fairy tales, science fiction, violence, women's lib, and romance. Our Snow White stand-in, Winter, is beautiful in spite of facial scars, kind to all she encounters, mentally fragile, and in love with her lowly guard, Jacin . . . Meyer's series has sold well and achieved a degree of acclaim. This conclusion's cinder-block size should only drum up further interest.” ―Booklist, starred review

Long but Well Wrapped Up
By Julie
Quick Thoughts: Overall the ending to this series was very good and I was pleased with the wrap up to the story. A lot of questions were answered and the action sequences in this book were awesome. However, I did have a few questions left over at the end and didn’t love it quite as much as everyone else.

Full Review: Alright. This book took me almost a month to rate or even review. I had many mixed feelings about this book after finishing it and I still feel like I’m sorting through them. I wanted to love the wrap up to this series after seeing so many glowing reviews online, but I got stuck. There were a lot of things I liked. For instance, the action and adventure in this series has always sucked me in. I feel like I can really visualize what is going on and Meyer has always given me a complete picture of this futuristic world. I ship all the ship especially the friendships and felt very satisfied with the conclusion of this story. However, I did have a few problems.

The fairytale interpretations throughout this series have been innovative and this installment is spot on as well. I love the elements of the Snow White fairytale we saw and the futuristic twist to the classic story too. However, there were a few points where scenes felt forced into the story to accommodate more parts of the fairytale. In some ways this story has become completely independent of the original stories so I found it a bit disruptive to be reminded this was a retelling. However, I felt very similarly at the end of Cinder and upon reread found it worked better for me.

My other issue with this book was the main couple. I had a really hard time with Jacin and Winter at first. There was so much character development and progress in Cress. I was already in the middle of so many stories and character arcs I had a hard time starting two new ones. Eventually I did like both of them and found their stories interesting. Plus Winter and Scarlet's friendship was a really interesting dynamic. I love Scarlet so as she and Winter spent more time together, I warmed up to Winter.

Like I mentioned though, the wrap up was well done. I liked the ending and how fast-paced and thrilling the conclusion was. There is a lot of drama and excitement in this wrap up. It is a long book so be prepared for emotional upheaval and lots of action. I was pleased about a lot of the decisions Meyer made for her characters and how the story panned out. I was satisfied with the conclusion of the story.

Finally Cinder's story is resolved!
By Sophia Katherine Bailey
The best thing I can say about this book is that it finally gave me a resolution to Cinder and Kai's story of trying to save Earth from the threat of Queen Levana. When I first started reading the series, I wasn't prepared for what an epic saga it would be (though I should have considered that it is called the Lunar Chronicles, so clearly there will be several tales). I honestly thought that each book would have a new story with new characters, not that they would be an expanding cast of characters who were all fighting the same battle.

By the time I started reading Winter, my patience was growing very thin, and I promised myself that even if the story wasn't resolved, I wouldn't continue reading it. ....Not that it's a bad series or I didn't enjoy it, but one can only watch so many wrenches get thrown in the heroes' way before it gets tedious. As far as this novel in particular is concerned, the character of Winter was frustrating for me. I know she was suffering from lunar sickness and that took its tole on her sanity, but her inane jabbering got old. Also, I felt like I was split between so many places and so many things going on when each of the characters split up, that I hadn't even realized that Wolf was missing from the story until he showed up much later.

Given all of these things that made reading Winter very frustrating for me, I nearly gave the book two stars instead of three. However, I wanted to be generous to the fact that we finally have a resolution of the larger arcing plot, so it earned another star just for that. I know that there are at least two stories after this, but I'm not sure that I'll be interested.

Great ending!
By Carina
I loved this series! This books does not disappoint either. It leaves you on the edge of your seat for most of the book. I found myself skipping ahead because I needed to know what was going to happen right away. Was a character going to die? I need to know now! At some points I felt like I had to close my eyes, because something horrible has going to happen to my favorite characters. I kept thinking: Oh no!

You really feel for the characters, and the story building is fantastic. Marissa Meyers thinks of every angle and does not miss anything. This is a heart wrenching book. The characters in this book do not get their happily ever after easily they must earn it, and they do! Anything that could go wrong does go wrong for your favorite characters.

Each character has there own characteristics and all of them are so much different from each other. Winter for some reason reminded me of Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter, her airiness attitude and the way she sees things that others don't. Thorne's great sense of humor even in a tough situation. Cress is shy and bashful but determine to be a Hero. Scarlet is fierce and stubborn. Cinder is determined and a leader. They are all great! I loved reading about all of them.

This book is very gruesome in parts, there is a lot of fighting and ever single character gets hurt some way in the book. But, the book winds down nicely at the end and everything is pieced together nicely. But I will miss reading about these character.

The New Philistines (Provocations), by Sohrab Ahmari

Contemporary art is obsessed with the politics of identity. Visit any contemporary gallery, museum or theatre, and chances are the art on offer will be principally concerned with race, gender, sexuality, power and privilege.

The quest for truth, freedom and the sacred has been thrust aside to make room for identity politics. Mystery, individuality and beauty are out; radical feminism, racial grievance and queer theory are in. The result is a drearily predictable culture and the narrowing of the space for creative self-expression and honest criticism, the things that draw most people to art in the first place.

Sohrab Ahmari's book is a passionate cri de coeur against this state of affairs. The New Philistines takes readers deep inside a cultural scene where all manner of ugly, inept art is celebrated so long as it toes the ideological line, and where the glories of the Western canon are revised and disfigured to fit the rigid doctrines of identity politics. Pop culture is under assault, too: compliance with identity politics is the measure by which we judge our movies, TV and music.

The degree of politicisation means that art no longer plays its historical function, as a mirror and repository of the human spirit - something that should alarm not just art lovers but anyone who cares about the future of liberal civilisation.

Review
"Sohrab Ahmari's polemic against the contemporary art world is angry, witty, uncompromising, and utterly unanswerable... Tremendously entertaining and thought-provoking." - Andrew Roberts, Commentary; "An elegant and necessary salvo in a new culture war." - Quillette; "An ambitious new series that tackles the controversy of the topics explored with a mixture of intelligence and forthright argument from some excellent writers." The Observer; "This short book is reminiscent of pre-novelist Tom Wolfe books like The Painted Word and From Bauhaus to Our House, which told amusing but depressing tales about lefty politics making their way into the art world, making both art and politics worse in the process." - National Review

The artsy-fartsy emperor has no clothes!
By Book Worm
Great language, especially in comparison to the gibberish of the artsy folks' talk the author is quoting to make his point. Modern art has lost meaning for him, he sees no beauty. Art, and the ex-bourgeois artists and their sycophants have become messengers or even missionaries for the improvement of the marginalized (real or imagined). The art objects, so the author, are full of message, and bare of beauty, worse than under the socialistic governments art industry.

Some 20 years ago I overheard a museum tour guide pointing at a completely white, about two by three meter size painting by Cy Twombly to alert the spectators to the "Potentialis" in this image. I thought this was about the widest stretch for your imagination possible.
After reading Ahmari I have to rethink that. In comparison to the observations the author describes, Twombly's picture feels more like a painter's reflection on Michelangelo.

The essay is entertaining to read, even if you do not agree with the author's strong views. (I tend to agree with his view that Shakespeare does not really need to be ultra-modernized, but I would be more tolerant with modern visual arts, after all they are modern and generic, even if they lack ingenuity or talent).

There is a potential for a major trans-Atlantic misunderstanding though.
The author calls the artists (and their fans) he criticises "identitarians". In Europe Identitarians represent an (ultra-)right wing political movement, I am sure the author would not wish them confused with those rather left leaning artists. I believe, the term has a somewhat different use in the US.

"The Olympics of Identity Politics" LOL
By Cryo Dunce
Short. A bit too focused on just a few individual "Gauchistes". By invoking their names constantly the author probably gives them more ink than they deserve. But he's right about the problem. The vital importance of the "establishment" as a group devoutly to be raged against. The present-day bourgeoisie, who have imbibed the dregs of Foucault, infused in a Starbucks six-dollar latte. The hilarious consequences of "intersectionality"; that is, of competing identity status (who wins, the book asks: a lesbian college professor or a student of color from a former colony?) And of course the absurd, dreary language of tenured Newspeak. Overall, a depressing picture of human tendencies. Is this what happens when you have a little college and a lot of fee time? Are we doomed to morph into odious blobs of righteous indignation. An army of jackasses and Streeps, posturing ever more ridiculously in the service of insatiable ego? The rambunctious, angry elite, trampling any dissent. The new philistines.

By Beau Tox
The spiritual discernment of the author is obvious, as is his derision of that modern cult of identity politics. His 'scientific method' of attending the various showcases and art openings might be considered wickedly provocative. The book, however, is not much more than a long essay on his subject, and doesn't even approach the completeness of rigor which we would require of an academic thesis. The 'thesis' could examine all of the arts in the same way, beyond just the plastic and performance varieties. I give it a '4' instead of a '5' because it was just too durn short.

The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?: Broadway Edition, by Edward Albee

“Four decades after Virginia Woolf sent shock waves through the mainstream theatre, Mr. Albee still asks questions that no other major American dramatist dares to ask." –Ben Brantley, The New York Times

Three-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Edward Albee’s most provocative, daring, and controversial play since Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The Goat won all the major awards for best new play of the year (Tony, New York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle). In the play, Martin-a hugely successful architect who has just turned fifty-leads an ostensibly ideal life with his loving wife and gay teenage son. But when he confides to his best friend that he is also in love with a goat (named Sylvia), he sets in motion events that will destroy his family and leave his life in tatters. The playwright himself describes it this way: “Every civilization sets quite arbitrary limits to its tolerances. The play is about a family that is deeply rocked by an unimaginable event and how they solve that problem. It is my hope that people will think afresh about whether or not all the values they hold are valid.”

Still Stunning
By Judd L. Silverman
As powerful as I remember it onstage, with Bill Irwin and Sally Field. Ultimately a play much about love and the cost of the unknown, unforeseen event. A unique piece of writing.

I like the content, seems to be kind of a rough draft but that is OK. I am concerned about the Index, doesn't seem to match the content. Many things are not listed in it. Otherwise a nice update of a book that needs to be written.

Madness and Civilization: A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason, by Michel Foucault

Michel Foucault examines the archeology of madness in the West from 1500 to 1800 - from the late Middle Ages, when insanity was still considered part of everyday life and fools and lunatics walked the streets freely, to the time when such people began to be considered a threat, asylums were first built, and walls were erected between the "insane" and the rest of humanity.

By Michael Knable
I read this book years ago as a college student and went back to it as part of my researches on the history of psychiatry. It is a magnificent piece of literature and is very scholarly and creative. However, it is way off the mark with regard to severe mental illness, and the debatse we have had about how to help these people since at least the industrial revolution. Although many past efforts were marked by their cruelty and rigid adherence to one doctrine or another, it is a tremendously complex problem, and the author does not seem to have much patience for this idea.

"Imagination is not madness."
By frumiousb
Madness and Civilization: A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason is one of those books that you are meant to have read in graduate school. It is also one of those books that I have read citations from, seen passages from, heard discussed, heard argued about and generally felt bad that I had never gotten around to reading. It's been sitting on my shelf for at least five years, I must admit.

I don't think that I need to say very much about the book itself. Foucault studies attitudes towards insanity throughout history, with particular attention to how the treatment of the mad was reflected by the current popular narrative about madness. The book is often cited as being against psychiatric institutions. After reading it, I tend to see that as an overstatement. I think that he is more or less simply raising the question as to whether what we see as "scientific" treatments for mental illness are not actually bearing out implicit societal biases about the nature of this kind of disease. In the model he examines, the romanticization of madness is dangerous but so is a view of madness as lack of discipline or moral fibre (for example). I think that it would be dangerous to extrapolate too much authorial meaning from the way that he addresses the subject.

I have read Foucault before, and I nearly always have the same reaction to his work. While he was clearly a brilliant man and while he has many interesting things to say, I do sometimes find there to be something quite glib about his thinking. Even here, in what is possibly his most famous work, there are moments where I felt as though he was poised to really dive into something interesting and instead moves on. Certainly thought-provoking, I will admit. But still somehow Madness and Civilization was not entirely satisfying.

I wish that he had included a bibliography. Also, he discusses so much about painting that it would be useful for the edition to contain a few prints. But these are minor quibbles.

I have read birth of the prison system and really enjoy it. I needed a pencil
By Martin Duffy
This book is hard work , just down to the convoluted writing style . I have read birth of the prison system and really enjoy it. I needed a pencil ,paper and google search to understand what the hell he was talking about a lot of the time . He makes reference to obscure art and books that he assumes you will be as familiar with as E.T. I did love this book once I got into the swing of it . One of those books that really will change the way you see the world and insanity. Lacking the heart of say someone like Rollo May but a really important book , a must read .
