Ansel Adams (1902-1984) was one of the great artists and environmentalists of the twentieth century. In a remarkable career spanning more than sixty years, he made over 40,000 photographs. Adams was a master teacher as well as a master photographer, believing that his approach to photography was universally applicable. The bible of photography

The trilogy of Ansel Adams (The Camera, The Negative and The Print) are simply the bible of photographic technique. Although it was written in a time where digital wasn't even dreamed about, all the concepts that really matters to produce high quality photographies are there, independently of the employed technology.

This is the second book purchased having recently lost the first. This book thoroughly explains the zone metering system, a system that is the foundation of understanding light and exposure. Mr. Adams goes through step by step the process of how film records light but never surrendering the final image and vision to the meter. A must read for all aspiring photographers.

These volatile metabolites carry valuable information on the metabolic status or disease activity in healthy people and patients alike. Their role in clinical diagnosis, therapy, and safety is an emerging multidisciplinary area of study that shows great promise for non-invasive and low-cost point-of-care monitoring of many common diseases such as cancer, respiratory and gastrointestinal dysfunction, nutritional intolerance and metabolic disorders, including diabetes.

About the Author
Prof. Dr. Anton Amann is Director of the Breath Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Professor at Innsbruck Medical University. He is a recipient of the prestigious Marie Sklodowska Curie Medal of the Polish Chemical Society. Prof. Amann coordinated the EU-project BAMOD (topic: breath analysis of lung carcinoma patients, eu-proposal.voc-research.at) and is a steering committee member of the EU-project SGL for USaR (topic: searching of entrapped persons, e.g., using volatile compounds released through breath, skin and urine, www.sgl-eu.org). He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Breath Research, which is published by the “Institute of Physics” (IOP, Bristol, UK, www.iop.org/EJ/journal/JBR) and Chairman of the International Association for Breath Research (IABR, iabr.voc-research.at).

Prof. Dr. David Smith is Professor in the School of Medicine at Keele University (UK). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (elected 1988) and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He was awarded the Schrödinger Prize in 1992. Prof. Smith is the inventor of Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS) and Flowing Afterglow Mass Spectrometry (FA-MS), now widely used for trace gas analysis of air and exhaled breath. He is co-author of more than 390 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, covering the fields of plasma physics, ion chemistry, terrestrial and interstellar chemistry, mass spectrometry, gas analysis, and breath analysis (more than 12600 citations in Web of Science; h-index 61). He is Founder Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Breath Research.

I enjoyed learning some common sayings in spanish. The section with commonly used phrases is nice to get an idea of things people actually say every day, which is different than what you get from textbooks.

A 101 for spiritual seekers

A must read for any individual to catalyze the best out of life while practicing yoga in any form.

This book does not describe ANY detailed steps for any yoga asana.

A must for every one irrespective any religion leanings and whether s/he intends to set on a yogic path or not.

All these years I was advised by my peers and elders not to read Patanjali as it is only for serious practitioners. I say I was misled all these years - understanding the basic grounds before practicing yoga will definitely make life more meaningful while enjoying the practice of yoga.

Besides identifying the need for meditation in life and the yogic asanas required to accomplish samadhi, the teachings in this book instil a sense of general dharmic philosophies of life.

As for coverage of yogic asanas - there are no references to any specific yog'asana, but the narrative references all holistic aspects of yama, niyama, panayama, pratyahara, dhyana (meditation) etc.

Reading the book will immensely help in understanding and respecting the tradition of yoga as a prelude (Prequel) to meditation.

The language used is very lucid, concise and to the point with valid references that drive home the points as needed.

I am gifting this book to my son(16) who is showing keen interest in eastern philosophies and traditions. This will be his second book after 'Autobiography of a Yogi - Swamy Yogananda Paramahamsa'.

Instant classic

The phrase "Instant classic" might sound like an oxymoron but for someone like me who could instantly reap the benefit of clear conceptual exposition (by the author), the usage of the phrase in admiration of the work (namely the book), is quite apt. The language, style and diction used in this book make it very easy to assimilate the essence of the "Yoga Sutras of Patanjali". The author's analysis of the "Mind" and the term/process called "Meditation" is very clearly done and rationally presented to the reader.

Besides the discussion on the 8 limbs of the Patanjali Yoga the author has chapters dedicated to discussing teacher-student relationship; hazards & obstacles to meditation; the basics of Sankhya school (from which the Yoga School of thought developed); Japa (or Chanting of the holy name) - its methods, means, obstacles, etc, amongst other topics. For those of us who want to know what happens to the mind after Samadhi, there is an exclusive chapter discussing this otherwise difficult concept, with great simplicity. Even while discussing the various limbs of the Yoga, the author warns us of the known risks and potential pitfalls for the spritual aspirants (especially while discussing Pranayama).

Simplicity is the hallmark of this presentation. I could never in many readings detect any attempt to mystify what is perhaps the most "royal" path to mental peace and poise. This is one of my personal favorites, when it comes to the topic of mind, meditation or the Yoga sutras, along with Swami Vivekananda's Raja Yoga Lectures and Swami Adiswarananda's "Meditation & Its Practices: A Definitive Guide To Techniques And Traditions Of Meditation In Yoga And Vedanta".

This book does provide the 5-star treatment (clarity, conciseness, organization, advance of theory & application, completeness - 1 star apiece) to the subject and hence deserves the 5 stars.

According to the information about the book, "This resource, with over 200 full-color photographs and illustrations depicts a variety of symbols..." This information is incorrect. The book has a single full color photograph on the front cover. The rest of the illustrations are microscopic depictions and the scale does not allow any detail to show. It is a very poor resource for anyone interested in these symbols.

The information also states, "The book shares the origin and meaning of hundreds of symbols of the Christian faith, as well as fascinating stories behind many symbols." The stories are at most three sentences long, give very little detail and are scant for the most part. I have returned this book, and will continue searching for a better resource.

I would like to note that I was looking for something that I could use as a jumping off point to design ecclesiastical garments and furnishings, and this book is not even at the level of jumping off the side of a pool. I didn't expect a high dive at the price point, but a diving board at all would have been nice.

not so good as the first one but still great

I'm a little disappointed that GM was the writer of this, because this was not so good as the first one. I think that I must share the opinion that I read, about GM is just awesome writing about Chaos characters and of course, you can see that in the loyalist pre heresy version of Abaddon that is presented here. to some one new to the universe of WH40K, you can see that he will be one of the bad guys.

the thing that I complain is about Horus. he present a really weak Horus, I think is because he want to make him evil as he will be but he must put him something like a victim because in this book he still is loyal to the Emperor. so, instead of present a loyalist primarch that represent the awesomeness of the imperium and the good guys, or the lost by chaos future representation of all evil primarch, he is stuck in the middle and I think that must be real hard for him, write about it. maybe if he wrote the third book, his work could be just awesome about Horus, but here was a little weak.

for the rest, is just great, I love the way that represents Abaddon, maybe a little bit Khorny, but hey, is the freaking future supreme lord of Chaos, come on!! =DD

in general lines, this book is great, I wish to give 4.5 stars but no middle points so, 4 will be.

Horus Heresy, Book Two

Iterators and remembrancers have not yet become an official part of the Crusade fleets. The civilians and scholars still follow the expeditionary forces, moving among them and writing of the glorious truths of the Imperium. Even Warmaster Horus decides to choose a personal documentarist, Petronella Vivar.

Horus is tricked into leading his men to Davin's moon where he is critically injured. Petronella witnesses as Horus falls unconscious from his wounds. While Horus is still unaware, he is transferred to a place of sorcery and the void. It is there Horus is swayed in his thinking to Chaos.

Garviel Loken, the Company Commander of the Sons of Horus Legion, and Tarik Torgaddon watch in horror as events play out before them. When Horus falls from his wounds, the Astartes begin to fall apart in confusion. Loken and Torgaddon are no exceptions to this. The death of the universe may just have begun.

**** In book two, author Graham McNeill continues the series of the Horus Heresy. As talented as I believe this author to be, I cannot help but notice the huge changes in the mood swings and attitude of Horus. The character is no longer as careful and seldom checks for facts any more. No longer does The Mournival whisper words of wisdom and advice in the Warmaster's ear. To me, it did not even seem to be a gradual change. The character is simply not believable to be the same Horus from the first book's foundation. I found the men of the Astarte to be just as unbelievable in their undisciplined behavior while Horus is in the void. Thankfully, that did not continue as long as I thought it might. Everything else is done well. The ending is a bit rushed to me, but still well done. Small threads (such as mentioning "the saint") are planted for book three to pick up and carry onward, just as the first book left small threads for book two's continuation. I look forward to more! ****

Diamond in the Rough

Graham McNeill is one of the major innovators at The Black Library. His books are always filled with the kind of "fluff" that excites Warhammer enthusiasts and I consider him the speartip of Warhammer creativity.

For the most part I am thrilled by his creative inventions. His descriptions of the various planets and societies are inspired and his descriptions of Chaos rituals are among the best in the Warhammer universe.

I would have given this novel five stars but for some niggling complaints, which I am going to enumerate out of a certain frustration.

My frustration arises from the following: (1) he usually employs multiple points of view (a practice endemic in Warhammer writing). This is not bad in itself but he employs short passages that break the flow of the writing and slows the narrative. Tolstoy uses multiple points of view but he lets the narrative develop and flow, allowing the reader to become involved in the narrative. Frankly, I want to be unaware of the change in point of view; I want to sink so deeply into the novel that I am living it. If a novelist shifts back and forth in short machine gun like bursts, it disrupts the narrative flow. This works in a movie; it doesn't work well in a novel. (2) He tends to use anachronistic expressions that distract from the narrative. For instance, twice Horus, the great Warmaster, says to his Mournival- "You are a sight for sore eyes." (3) Horus acts child-like over and over again (but so did Hitler and Stalin, you say), even spilling his guts to a journalist in an attempt to immortalize himself in print, when he thinks he is going to die.

In addition, certain plot choices confused me. More particularly, I didn't understand the motivations behind the invasion of the Davin moon. For instance, why would the Legion transport Titans to the moon to battle an army of the undead, which they dispatch with a blow to the head? Was Horus' hubris such that he saw every battle as an insult to his pride and honor? Was it necessary to display the almost incalculable strength of the Legion against a rebellious brother? Or was it necessary to introduce the Titans into the plot? Additionally, at the end of the novel,why does Horus abandon the crusade to attack a potentially friendly world? Does he seek their technology or has Chaos already taken hold of him and he wants simply to kill and maim?

Irrespective of these criticisms, I say bravo to McNeill. He took the threads of the Horus Rising and substantially raised the level of discourse.
