Are some people born to achieve anything they want while others struggle? Call them lucky, blessed, or possessors of the Midas touch. What is the real reason for their success? Is it family background, wealth, greater opportunities, high morals, an easy childhood? New York Times bestselling author John C. Maxwell has the answer: The difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure. Most people are never prepared to deal with failure. Maxwell says that if you are like him, coming out of school, you feared it, misunderstood it, and ran away from it. But Maxwell has learned to make failure his friend, and he can teach you to do the same. “I want to help you learn how to confidently look the prospect of failure in the eye and move forward anyway,” says Maxwell. “Because in life, the question is not if you will have problems, but how you are going to deal with them. Stop failing backward and start failing forward!”

Amazon.com Review
The author of 24 books on maximizing personal and leadership potential, John C. Maxwell believes "the difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure." In Failing Forward, he offers inspirational advice for turning the difficulties that inevitably arise in life into stepping stones that help you reach the top. Noting that star performers are often those who aggressively push forward after encountering adversity, Maxwell shows how a variety of well-known and not-so-well-known people have forged ahead despite obstacles that could have derailed them. They include: Mary Kay Ash, who founded her cosmetics firm against enormous odds when the direct-sales company she toiled in for 25 years resisted her continued corporate climb; Truett Cathy, who lost two brothers (and business partners) in an airplane crash and experienced his own serious medical problems before establishing the Chick-fil-A fast-food chain; Greg Horn, who reopened his Kentucky grocery store just 21 days after it suffered $1 million in flood damage; and Beck Weathers, who lost his nose, half of one arm, and the fingers on his other in the infamous 1996 Into Thin Air Mt. Everest tragedy, but now takes a positive message of survival and conquest to audiences around the world. --Howard Rothman

Great inspiration for getting back in the race when life knocks the poo out of ya.
By Ms Teeta
After being knocked off my feet by a nasty divorce and a whole a string of unpleasant circumstances and events, I had pretty much resolved to bury myself in the bottom of an ice cream box and stay that way indefinetly. A family member recognized my state of mind and gave me a list of 5 books that he made me promise to read. This one was spoke to me the loudest, and helped give me the oomph I needed to abandon my ice cream boxes and stretch pants and get back in the fight. It's a small book that is easy and quick to read. If you know someone who is down on their luck and struggling to get back up after a few knock downs, get them this book!

Awesome!!

I read this book as additional reading assignment in one of my HR Management classes at the University of Georgia. I have read a couple other books by Maxwell and this certainly ranks up there with one of his best. So often in college I feel like students think they have to have their whole lives figured out by the time they graduate. This book brought a helpful perspective to the reality that we often have to step out in the midst of uncertainty and take a risk. As a result, our fear is reduced by simply taking action. As we learn to turn our mistakes into platforms to boost success, we gain a clearer picture of our skills, abilities, and passions. This book also helped me get an inside look at real life stories of those who experienced massive failure before they were successful. It seems like they were actually successful not in spite of their failure but because of them! I would say this is a must for business and nonbusiness students alike.

It's so funny when the pupil is ready the teacher will come. Thats not a understatement.
By Leonardo P. Ambrose
I'm a 45 yr old African American Man, sometimes I feel like I'm sitting in the midst of a great unseen war. I promise you at first the more you focus on staying positive the more you will experience the negative behaviors, and whims of others. The more you try to create success in your life, the more obstacles you will face. If you are reading this you must understand like others I didn't think I had a mentality of being a victim, or so thought. Now that way of thinking, and believing is becoming, starting to become my past. I'm still around some of those very same people, but one thing I've learned was that I had to rethink, and relearn how my very own thinking was affecting me, and those I'm around. My past is full of so many failures, and feeling like a failure I couldn't or wouldn't focus on my many successes I also had in my past. Sometimes people try to get me to buy into so many lies that I'm to old to accomplish anything new that makes me feel happy, and wonderful about myself. It's so funny when the pupil is ready the teacher will come. I've been changing all my life, like so many I've had my heartaches and pain. One day it clicked, this is so honest once I began to change my thinking, spiritual things started sparking in my life. I'm just now starting to put it altogether. I always try to focus on what life - God is trying to teach me, show me so I can be a better person - live a more rewarding life. I've learned what people say about failure is not always true, theres always a lesson to be learned. I have this little saying it's not new - when you fall fight to get up so you can fall again. It's funny that I came across this book about failure - just when I was going to believe maybe everyone is right my dreams might just be to far reaching. I wasn't going to buy this book, buy the grace of God I'm glad I did. .
