Review
"Any half-dozen of the 85 examples is likely to save you more than a couple of hours of research or, worse yet, doing things the wrong way. Unless you're the most grizzled MFC veteran, I think you'll learn something from Visual C++ MFC Programming by Example." -- Windows Developer's Journal on the author's previous book

About the Author
John E. Swanke has worked with COM since its inception. He also has over six years experience with Visual C++ and MFC creating CAD systems, network management, and computer telephony applications. He is an accomplished author having written articles on topics that range from reverse engineering to portability issues. John successfully established his teaching by example method with two MFC titles published in 1999: Visual C++ MFC Programming by Example and VC++ MFC Extensions by Example. He believes in the adage that an example is worth a kilobyte, i.e., each illustrative example is worth four or five times the amount of text it would take to illustrate the same technology. Tune up that old MFC with these examples
By Robin T. Wernick
After working for ten years on MFC I put it away and moved on to C# and WPF. However, a large number of companies didn't let go of this outdated framework. Especially, database and high tech companies. They are still dealing with buttons that have only one text line and MessageBoxes that can't time out. That means that automated testing is not available to MFC designs out of the box.

So, learn how to modernize that old MFC code and think about putting WPF into the MFC desktop.Become a technology hero and update that old GUI. Buy the book and find out.

No CD and nowhere to download
By Reinaldo Alvarez
The book seems to be OK and useful, however there is no CD with the book and I bought a new one. The publisher's address [...] is broken and returns a German garage doors website.
The address in the book where one can supposedly download the source code doesn't work neither "Access denied". The book contains tons of references to these examples and since the CD was missing and the download site down it means this book is useless. Do not buy this book unless you have already found the source code somehow.

Somewhat useful addition to online reference
By Brian C. Miller
Unfortunately there is a serious lack of books written on MFC. One would think that there would be a number of excellent books by this time. Nope. MFC looks like it was abandoned. WTL, a low-overhead replacement for MFC, has less documentation yet.

I bought this book hoping that it would help me learn MFC. It covers some of the concepts, but it just doesn't go far enough. The example program are no longer available online, so you'll have to type them in yourself. Some of what is covered in the book has been changed, so you'll have to try to make sense of the online reference.
