* * *

I married the right brother.

At least that's what I tell myself at night, when I stare at the ceiling and listen to the rhythm of the grandfather clock down the hall. It never feels like the mere passage of time, but a countdown towards something inevitable.

Bobby Lightly is selfish, irresponsible, and careless. I haven't seen him since the day I married his brother. He slipped out during the wedding reception without a word.

A year later, I heard Bobby was drafted to Korea. He never said goodbye. Never sent a letter. We had all come to terms with the fact that he was probably dead somewhere, either a victim of the war or its aftermath.

That is, until in the midst of an unrelenting heatwave, he showed up at the doorstep of the house I lived in with his brother.

Everyone thinks I'm cruel. Everyone thinks I should be easy on him. They think I don't understand him. They all think I hate him.

But what no one understands is that it was Bobby who broke my heart.

And I think he’s back to do it again.

Note: Swelter is a standalone novel. Appx. 80,540 words.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters
By Courtney M
This was such a lovely book. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, and their history. I was so shocked that Bobby got shot (he was my favourite)... Rory.... well... not a lot to be said there, but i had a feeling from the beginning that I didnt like him. Im glad Bobby and Lil got their happy moments they deserved, after everything that had gone on in their lives... they finally got their time together.
I purchased this book because i have read Debt, and reeeeeally enjoyed that genre, ao i gave Swelter a chance, glad i did. But i must warn you, you will get teary ... i did.

Give me my heart back...PLEASE
By Lisa High
Swelter is the book that makes you want to throw it across the room, then run and pick it up, and caress it just to be sure it was not harmed. You cannot help but love Nina G Jones for her brilliance, but she rips your heart out and hands it back to you. I was warned before I started reading Swelter, I was told to be prepared, but who really listens to those warnings?
This book is beautifully written, and masterfully choreographed. You love the characters, and you cheer them on for their bad behavior, and you want nothing but their complete happiness even though you know they don’t deserve it for what they have done. When the tables turn, you are still angry at the person trying to come in between their happiness, even though you have no right to feel that way.
Nina as much as I want to physically harm you right now for all the tears, I also want to hug you for allowing me to experience this beautiful and heart wrenching story. I love/hate you!

“If I could press a button and stop loving you, I would,”

What tragedy! Wow! That was intense. I thought I knew how this would end, but I was wrong.

Swelter is a story of unrequited, forbidden love. I read this every free moment I had. It was intriguing, sexy, well wrtten. I liked it a lot. There's an unfortunate love triangle-ish situation and the ending is sorrowful, but it was still worth every penny.

Lilly is a woman getting married to a man who's brother she's in love with. Lilly, Rory (her husband) and Bobby (Rory's brother), grew up together. They both had a thing for Lilly but Rory was the only one to vocalize said feelings. Bobby, on the other hand, stepped aside, kept his feelings to himself and let his brother get the girl. It wasn't until the day of Bobby's brother's wedding to Lilly—marijuana running through his system, that he had the courage to put himself out there. Horrible timing, of course, but he found that Lilly felt the same for him. Too afraid it was too late to back out, Lilly follows through with her nuptials to Rory and grieves the loss of her true love, in more ways than one.

Bobby disappeared that night, without a word and went to the military. His absence sent his brother in a downward spiral with alcohol and left Lilly in a state of depression. He stayed away, not being able to watch his brother live a life that should have been his own. With Bobby gone and Rory drinking regularly, Lilly becomes a shell of the person she once was. Seven years later, Bobby resurfaces at their door and wakes up a mourning Lilly. They make vows to get Rory sober and this time put themselves before their shared concern for Rory's happiness. They want to do what should have been done seven years prior. Which is be together.

The road they were about to embark upon would not be an easy one and this they knew. But they had no idea what was really in-store for them. Love is a tricky thing. It can give you the world but it can also rip that same world to shreds. Lilly and Bobby learn this the hard way, in a beautifully written tale, set in the 1950's.

Swelter is a second chance romance and although the 'in love with brothers' theme is extremely overdone, I give this author props for spinning it in a direction I didn't see coming. Still predictable at times but a wonderful journey. Bobby and Lilly broke my heart. You could feel the chemistry between them radiate off the pages and it made me wonder why she ever went through with her marriage to Rory. Set to look like a love triangle, Swelter was not. There was no question where her love laid, just a question of will she, won't she? And a fear of how it would end. I can't say it eneded the way I intended but none the less, a strong close to the story. There were tender moments and all that jazz—but underneath it, unfolded the wrath of not seizing the day. The message...live everyday like it's the last and never under any circumstance, put someone else's happiness before your own. Choices can be hard, but when the obvious choice should be yourself, it should be the easiest choice you'll ever have to make.
