Keith Olsen is a CIW Certified Instructor who trains CIW candidates at PBSC, an IBM-owned training company in Canada. He also holds MCT, MCSE, CNI, and CNE credentials and provides Microsoft and Novell certification training.

Don Loughran is a full-time technical instructor with Polar Bear Corporate Education Solutions and has been working in the microcomputer industry since 1980. His many certifications include CIW Certified Instructor, CNE and CNI, MCSE, MCSD, MCT, Sun Certified Java Programmer, and A+.

This book covers the old Foundations exam, retired in 2005. The new exam has many topics not covered by this book, including XML, XHTML, IT job roles, and project management concepts. The test engine is similarly outdated. If you plan on getting certified, look for newer books based on the CIW v5 Foundations Exam 1D0-510.

It worked!

Just yesterday I took the CIW Foundations exam (1D0-410) and passed! It was due entirely to the use of this book. I found the layout, design and content to be VERY good. It is quite easy to read and follows the exam objectives very closely.
The accompanying CD-ROM is chock full of materials and the practice exams were very helpful in my preparation.
The only problem is that there are quite a few typographical errors throughout the book -- hence the 4 out of 5 rating. I found this especially frustrating in the HTML codes where accuracy is THE most important factor. Looking back I guess this was good because I was able to spot the errors which meant I had learned what was right and what was wrong. Some of the practice exam questions at the end of each chapter were wrong as well as far as the letters from the multiple choice question did not match the letters in the answer key. In other words, the letter was wrong in the answer key, but the subsequent description as correct. This seems to be due to the editing process.
I had also purchase another exam preparation book for the same course and it was not nearly as good as this one.
There were only one or two questions on the exam that were not covered in the book. Due to the fact the exam is multiple choice, however, I was able to eliminate some of the answers due to the knowledge I gained from studying with this book.
In all, this seems to be the best preparation book that I have found. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone studying for the CIW foundations exam.

Where was this book when I took the exam...

I took the CIW Foundations exam over a year ago, I had almost nothing to study from and passing the exam was quite the challenge. Had I had this book I am confident that the exam would have been less trouble and made my life easier.

The 860 page book tackles the 1D0-410 Foundations exam and after reading through it I found that it was tailored made for the exam, objective by objective. Detailed information is given and if you use this book I also found that you have enough information to pass the iNet+ exam from CompTia.

In part 1 the author takes on the internet fundamentals with topics like browsers, search engines, plug-ins, security and e-commerce. Part 2 is dedicated to HTML both in the basic and some advanced techniques.

The HTML covers versions 4 and 5 and the breakdown is in a step-by-step format with actual coding examples to work with. Also basic coverage of CSS, DHTML and XML has been broken down into a understandable but technical manner.

Part 3 is the networking fundamentals sections, with topics ranging from TCP/IP, OSI model, servers, security and disaster recovery to LANS, WANS and hardware and troubleshooting.

Each chapter has exercises, questions, and labs to re-enforce the concepts and you can read and reread as often as necessary. There are also hundreds of resources included with every section.

Finally there is a cdrom include with several network tools like Visual Route, but what I found most important was the practice tests include was from Boson, a highly respected name in testing software. Overall this is by far the best book I have seen on the subject matter to date.

About the Author
Bandhu Dunham began teaching himself the art of lampworking in 1975. Since then, he has taught others at facilities worldwide, including The Studio Corning Museum of Glass, Niijima Glass Art Center, Red Deer College, Penland School of Crafts and Pilchuck School. In between Bandhu's production and teaching schedules, he is working on Volume III for Contempory Glassworking.

Good skill building books

This is a two book set of volume I and II of Bandhu Scott Dunham's series on Contemporary Lampworking. Taken together these two books and the following book, Volume III make up a series which is the lampworking equivalent to Oppi Untracht's "Jewelry: Concepts And Technology", i.e. a definitive survey on the subject. I think a good first book for people just learning recreational lampworking is Cindy Jenkins' "Making Glass Beads", which may give the novice a bit more of the romance of it in a more enthusiastic manner. These books should definitely be the next two on the reading list for the serious lampworking student.

Dunham presents a series of topics which show the reader the basics of how to do lampworking, starting with very simple ways to heat glass, add colored stringers and progressing right on up to very complex ways of making complex objects, such as laboratory glassware and large sculptures. Book I is the basics and book II is not just a step up toward more advanced techniques, but a step describing advanced tooling. Initially I wished for more information about specifics of tools themselves, but then I realized that lampworking is not a thing which is bound by any specific technology, but rather by skill of the worker and the properties and chemistry of the glass.

For me, one single technique, the proper winding of a steel wool vessel core, paid for the books. Perhaps for another reader it would be the hint to use a borosilicate punty when making Effetre marbles or the proper way to place a dot or any one of the thousands of other simple things we learned wrong when we start out with lampworking.

The language is fairly simple if you've done basic lampworking and read previous lampworking books and have a basic knowledge of both art glass and lab glassware. One word should do for an example. It is found in a technique which tells about the use of a "rubber policeman" to temporarily stop up a hole at the cold end of a piece of glassware. Anyone who has worked in labs knows what are rubber policemen, but people who come to lampworking from the world of video games and t.v. shows probably should keep in mind that their browser can link to dictionaries.

Some of the reviewers seem to be put off by the black and white photos. I don't believe I would have told that, since it betrays a certain level of inexperience on the subject. Lampworking has two photographic facts of life. Number one is that color photography is not adequate to capture the color spectrum of hot glass. Number two is that hot glass in a flame produces a flare or false color reaction which makes unfiltered color photographs a mess of yellow and throws off the color of filtered ones.

Other readers seem put off by the fact that a lot of the techniques are more directly applicable to borosilicate than to COE 104. I'm not at the level where I can actually do boro with any confidence but I've achieved a level where I can see that the distinction is a false one. The techniques build on one another. If you can keep Effetre cooler but warm enough to work on just a spot without cracking the rest it makes you a better borosilicate worker and if you can work on the stiffer borosilicate it helps you cut down overheating your Effetre. Et cetera.

A minor irritant is that these books are spiral bound, which would make these books difficult for a precocious young reader to handle. However any adult who has sufficient manual dexterity for basic lampworking should be able to read them without tearing pages.

A Must Read for Lampworkers

I found this book to be fantastic. Despite my only working in soft glass, I love that it talks about Boro as well. I had an instructor tell me it didn't apply to soft glass work and I shouldn't buy it... I am so glad I make decisions for myself! The history told is very informative, the tips and tricks throughout the book make it worth every penny. I was most interested in learning the chemistry behind the glass because once you understand that, so many other things come into place. Even on the descriptions that don't direct relate to what I do, I learned something. I love the author's sense of humor- it makes the book an easy and delightful read. So many books are simply "how-to's" these days and don't explain the "whys". Thank you for writing this book and explaining the "whys" in a way everyone can understand! I have now purchased volumes 2 and 3 and am excited to read them. A must have for any lampworker's library.

Nice content, very frustrating book

I want to give this book five stars, as it is very interesting, but the fact that every other page is stuck to the one before it, which requires you to peel the pages apart (not an easy task), makes me angry. I paid a lot of money for this book, and I don't know if I am going to keep it, because I don't think I want to devote an entire day of my life to making it readable. Whoever is responsible for the production of this book--the person who approved the ultra thin stick-together pages--needs to spend the rest of his or her life peeling apart all the books before they are shipped to consumers.

I guess if you don't want to take time off from work to make this book readable, you can simply give up and call it "500 Poses by Coco Rocha," because that's all you can see without a whole lot of effort.

For a very specific audience and lousy production quality mars the overall experience.

[[VIDEOID:5e8d23d6e20c76bd7fa3435ad465f0f]]Coco Rocha, if you don't know, is a Canadian model. Together with photographer Steven Sebring, they have produced a book of 1,000 poses.

The premise is interesting enough for me to get it. 1,000 poses! They could be good for reference. But there's a big caveat.

Let's talk about the book's physical aspect first. It's a 2032-page hardcover about 7 by 9 inches. It's very thick and heavy. Edges of the pages are printed black.

Majority of the pages stick together. By the time I peel off the pages from each other, reaching about hundred over pages, I was quite tired, at two hundred pages, I was irritated, and at three hundred pages I was reflecting on the production value of this book. Yes, you'll have a lot of time to think about things while peeling the pages. Those people who say this is a good book may not have peeled more pages than me yet.

And because the pages are so thin, it's easy to crease them when peeling them apart.

Production quality of the book is quite bad. For the price of the book, it's very bad. I should also note that publisher Harper Design is known for publishing illustrated books such as the The Hobbit film companions, 532-page Harry Potter Page to Screen and 464-page The Art of Film Magic which are all quality production. It's quite shocking to see a book of this production quality from them.

The binding is also questionable. The book uses stitch binding, thank goodness. However, the piece of cloth that sticks to the stitched binding does not seem to use particularly strong adhesive. I picked up the book the wrong way by holding the spine side and the pages pulled down causing the cloth to detach from the stitched binding. Not good. I've since pushed the cloth back to make it stick again and it looks alright for the time being. Having said that, for a book this thick you would expect to open it flat, and I've a feeling that the cloth will come off in the future (again for my case).

Alright, now about the content.

From a photography standpoint the photos look good enough, for me. Photos of Rocha are against black background. The lighting is nice. The form of the body is easily discernible except in a few occasions where the shadow side blends into the background like those chiaroscuro paintings of old masters. Half the number of pages are actually for the photos while the other half are white printed with the page number. The book could have easily been half the size if they chose to print the page number in white against the black background of the photos, and that would not have compromised anything artistically.

If you thought fashion poses are outrageous in real life, there are even more extreme so here. I meant that in a good and bad way. The good is there's a huge variety of poses to check out. The bad, depending on what you have been expecting, is most poses aren't from real life or anything resembling how you would pose in real life. Anyway. if you're really looking for fashion poses, check out 1000 Poses in Fashion and How to Draw Poses in Fashion.

The poses here are not those you see in typical fashion magazines. They are more expressive and exaggerated. Out of the 1,000 poses, there are probably less than 10 poses from real life. Out of those 10, most are sports poses. There many poses of her doing some uncommon version of bending, jumping, sitting and standing. I'm actually quite impressed by how many non-real life poses there are. Rocha really is "The Queen of Pose", but whether you can use those poses is a different matter. I see this book as an artistic project rather than a reference book that's meant to be helpful.

There aren't any poses where I think any artist, model or photographer would replicate for their own project. But that's just my opinion.

Another downside is that the poses are not grouped or categorised in any manner. So you can't find poses relating to criteria such as standing, squatting, twisting torso, hand raise, etc. And because they are not categorised, the page numbers are sort of useless on hindsight, which also means half the book is wasted to print them.

In the preface of the book, it was mentioned 100 cameras were used to photograph Rocha in different angles. I suppose there might be a tablet application coming soon to show all those poses. And indeed on Sebring's website, there's a mockup of the app showing one pose that you can turn around in 360. Perhaps that application will be a more worthwhile purchase because you really don't want to deal with the sticky pages of this book.

Pose number 1,000 is quite apt at describing how I feel at the end of the book. It shows Rocha clearly distressed and trying to tear her hair out. I wonder if there's a hidden joke somewhere.

This book is really marred by the lousy production quality and ultimately, whether the content will appeal to you will depend on your expectations.

Depends on what you expected!

I really love Coco and admire her greatly, and she has done a fantastic job in the making of this book with Steven. Like the other reviewers said, the pages are thin and I fear ripping them because they are stuck together. But aside from all that, by content, this is what I think of the book.

I find this book to be a fantastic work of art, but I feel like it is a lot more of capturing dance poses than the study of pose/posing as a model. The poses she has are hardly those you see in editorial prints or lifestyle prints. A lot of the poses really look like dancing or acting poses. She has goofy expressions in a lot of them and very dynamic movement poses, or storytelling poses. I haven't looked through all 1,000 poses yet but it is a lot more artistic moment-capturing in style than I expected, which was really being able to study posing coming from such a successful high-fashion model. 1,000 poses is a challenge and I greatly respect and admire the work Coco and Steven put into making this book, but I guess I wasn't expecting it to be so dancer-like. To shoot 1,000 print and editorial looks would be a serioussss challenge though. She is also wearing the same outfit in the whole book and the photography look is the same - like the one on the edge spine of the book - which I suppose makes sense given the "challenge," but makes it even more of an acting/dancing "poses" book to me. Also, because her style of posing in general involves a lot of movement, it's really hard to "study," in my opinion. It's a great show-off work of art between Coco and Steven though, truly incredible collaboration.

About the Author
Gilbert Strang is a Professor of Mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford University. He is also a prolific author, with a dozen highly regarded textbooks and monographs to his credit. Strang served as president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) from 1999-2000 and chaired the U.S. National Committee on Mathematics from 2003-4. He won the Henrici and Su Buchin prizes at ICIAM 2007 and the Von Neumann Medal of the U.S. Association of Computational Mechanics. He is a SIAM Fellow and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Text aims to impart real understanding

I am a surgeon by profession and have been using this text in my "hobby", a serious self-study of mathematics and modern physics, in conjunction with MIT's Open Courseware and edx.org. I started off with just high school calculus from decades ago, and have made it to the mid-undergraduate maths covered in this volume. Although I'm giving it five stars, I have to add the caveat that at first it was hard to get started with this book. Professor Strang fills the text with all sorts of glimpses of more advanced topics that will be unfamiliar to new students. For example, some of the very first examples involve step and Dirac delta input, with a heavy emphasis on impulse response concepts to explain the time evolution of solutions. This really confused me at first. However, once I started to feel more familiar with ODEs, this presentation was very helpful to get me to "get it" at a deeper level than the mere methodology of finding and writing out solutions.

Also, the book does not follow the OCW differential equations course (18.03) very closely, at least the version currently online, even though it supposedly grew out of a rewrite of the 18.03 syllabus. Hopefully MIT will put up an updated version of 18.03 at some point (though I do love Prof. Mattuck's lectures in the current one).

I still have a decent chunk of the material ahead of me (matrix methods for ODE systems, eigenvalues, etc.) but I now find the book very easy to follow.

There are a few strangers that have benefited me in my life. Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, obviously some others, and Dr. Strang. Combine this textbook (and his others) with his lectures available online, and you're hooked up with everything that an independent learner needs.

There’s no doubt that Gilbert Strang is a master teacher and an enthusiastic evangelist
for his perceptive vision of where applied math should be headed. After a half century and ten
editions of Boyce and DiPrima, there’s a pile of reasons (and ways) to change the typical first
course in differential equations. One good idea is to combine that course with one on linear
algebra, which occurred quite some time ago to Kreider, Kuller, Ostberg, and Perkins and to
Hirsch and Smale, among others. Now, however, we have MATLAB and Maple, the
Singular Value Decomposition, and the fast Fourier transform! Some experimentation with technology
and computing uncovers the practical importance of differential equations. Students tend to
learn the method of Frobenius and about specific special functions later, perhaps encountering
them in a course in engineering, biology, or finance. They ultimately also learn that nonlinearity
must be faced. This is hinted at by the book’s attractive cover illustration (by two artistic SIAM
staff members), which relates pictures of the Lorenz attractor from a Portuguese grad student.

As you’d expect, the emphasis here is linear differential equations with constant
coefficients. Honestly, there aren’t many variable coefficient ODEs that we can handle
analytically, though it is certainly fun to solve one. Numerical methods for initial value problems
are, admittedly, very successful and the resulting portraits provide immediate understanding of
solution behavior. Moreover, the powerful underlying A^TA philosophy employed carries over to
using eigenvalues and eigenvectors to solve boundary value problems for Laplace’s equation
and other partial differential equations, analytically and via finite differences. Most sophomores
would not have realized this without Strang’s insistence. Using Fourier series and Fourier and
Laplace transforms brings the focus successfully back to the classical syllabus. Meanwhile,
however, one has figured out many matrix decompositions, how to use delta and transfer
functions, and has understood critical ideas like stability and stiffness. The exercises, which
include challenge problems, look interesting, and extensive backup resources from MIT
websites are available.

As with Strang’s linear algebra books, now in their fourth edition, this text is destined to
have a big impact on differential equations courses and applied math education. Its
conversational presentation, breadth, and provocative problems will even appeal to students,
who typically read little of the book assigned. Those who teach differential equations should
definitely give Strang’s approach serious consideration. Once again, he’s making us think!

His new novel (the title of which refers to the residue left after a magician's successful trick) is enthrallingly odd. In a carefully calculated period style that is remarkably akin to that of the late Robertson Davies, Priest writes of a pair of rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London. Each has a winning trick the other craves, but so arcane is the nature of these tricks, so incredibly difficult are they to perform, that they take on a peculiar life of their own?in one case involving a mysterious apparent double identity, in the other a reliance on the ferocious powers unleashed in the early experimental years of electricity. The rivalry of the two men is such that in the end, though both are ashamed of the strength of their feelings of spite and envy, it consumes them both, and affects their respective families for generations. This is a complex tale that must have been extremely difficult to tell in exactly the right sequence, while still maintaining a series of shocks to the very end. Priest has brought it off with great imagination and skill. It's only fair to say, though, that the book's very considerable narrative grip is its principal virtue. Having seen the movie,

I was surprised how unremittingly dull the book was. Diary entries put everything into some boring (and predictable) venue. And MY GOD it was slow. And boring. And predictable. And completely lacking in magic. I don't care how many awards it won.

I gave it a shot ... and wish I hadn't.

Go see the movie, which is fabulous.

If you're a fan of Simon Vance's narration as I am, you should get this audiobook. I first discovered Vance when listening to his reading of The Ludwig Conspiracy and I've been a fan ever since. If Simon Vance can't make a book interesting, it isn't worth listening to.

This book is an absolute delight. From the carefully written account of several independent journalists going into some dangerous regions, to the beautiful watercolor art, it all adds up to a great reading experience. I wish more serious graphics novels like this were published. They take the genre to a new level. I am also going to check Glidden's previous book, “How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less”

This one is a pleasant surprise.

Frankly, I had doubts about Sarah Glidden’s decision to use “comic panels” to tell the intriguing story of her visit to Turkey, Syria, and Iraq with her two journalist friends and a friend of theirs who just happened to have seen military action in Iraq as an American soldier. I have read two or three graphic novels and enjoyed the way that the panels added to the overall emotional impact of the novels, but Rolling Blackouts is my first experience with graphic nonfiction. I am happy to report that Glidden made it all work very well. Now I can’t decide which impresses me more, the sheer number of Glidden’s wonderful illustrations (I estimate there to be at least 2,500 of the comic panels) or the amount of information she packed into them.

Sarah Stuteville and Alex Stonehall, along with Jessica Partnow, created what Stuteville calls a “multimedia journalism collective” to cover the stories that the established news organizations never seemed to have time for, stories they never covered. The collective’s first venture was a six-month trip through Thailand, Cambodia, Pakistan, India, Israel, Palestine, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan where they covered almost thirty stories of their own choosing, stories that were often picked up by “news sites, magazines, and public radio stations.” Now, Sarah and Alex are embarking on a two-month venture into Turkey, Syria, and Iraq to speak with some of the people most affected by the Iraq War, those almost countless refugees forced to flee their homes because of the fighting. Sarah Glidden, armed only with a camera and a digital voice recorder, and Dan O’Brien, armed only with his memories of the Iraq War, join them.

Sarah Stuteville and Dan O’Brien were childhood friends who had not seen each other for a number of years. Stuteville expected that by returning to Iraq, the scene of his military service, her old friend would do the kind of deep soul-searching that would lend itself to a meaningful video documentary piece. What she found instead, and what deeply frustrated her, is that O’Brien simply refused to play that game. O’Brien figured out what she expected of him early on, and although he felt guilty about letting her down, he could never bring himself to discuss his experience in any meaningful way.

As the four young people cross various international borders, Glidden manages to illustrate a bit of each country’s history and political status. The group’s reception by the people they speak with and formally interview is exactly what one would hope for: friendly, but serious. The displaced people they approach are generally very willing (sometimes even eager) to speak with them despite the way they express anger at the U.S. government and blame America for the loss of homes, family members, and friends. Stuteville and Stonehall come home with the kind of stories they went looking for, but come to realize that journalism is not really about “changing things” and never was. According to Stuteville the important thing is to get the story “out there” and hope that it gets “passed along.” Then, according to her, “The way the reader uses that story to understand the world is up to them.”

Bottom Line: Rolling Blackouts manages to pack in more factual information than I expected from graphic nonfiction genre. It is more effective, however, when illustrating the emotions of the interviewer and those being interviewed. Sarah Glidden’s illustrations (she calls them “comics”) are truly wonderful and they greatly add to the book’s emotional impact on the reader. This one was a pleasant surprise.

Amazing book, incredible reportage

I can't remember the last time a book moved me so much. I couldn't fall asleep last night because of how sad and affected I was/am by the interviews with the Iraqi refugees in this book. This brought all of the impact of the Iraqi war and our invasion of that country home in a personal way. Never will I think of war again without thinking of the impact it will have on women and men, families and children. I was so impressed I wrote a letter to the author through her website. Every politician and citizen of the world should read this book to get a real picture of the affect of war on civilians.

About the Author

William Stallings has made a unique contribution to understanding the broad sweep of technical developments in computer networking and computer architecture. He has authored 18 titles, and counting revised editions, a total of 35 books on various aspects of these subjects. In over 20 years in the field, he has been a technical contributor, technical manager, and an executive with several high-technology firms. Currently he is an independent consultant whose clients have included computer and networking manufacturers and customers, software development firms, and leading-edge government research institutions.

He has received the prize for best Computer Science and Engineering textbook of the year from the Textbook and Academic Authors Association six times.

Bill has designed and implemented both TCP/IP-based and OSI-based protocol suites on a variety of computers and operating systems, ranging from microcomputers to mainframes. As a consultant, he has advised government agencies, computer and software vendors, and major users on the design, selection, and use of networking software and products.

Dr. Stallings holds a Ph.D. from M.I.T. in Computer Science and a B.S. from Notre Dame in Electrical Engineering.

Book content is good. DRM sucks

The content is good. However, the DRM is oppressive. I purchased the digital copy for the ease of portability, however I have to deactivate my kindle app account on one device before being able to download it on another. This proves exceptionally annoying when I want to switch between reading on my tablet and laptop, for example.

Good classic text, needs some error correction.

This is a good classic work in the field. My father has been a microwave communications technician for decades, and he praised his copy of a much earlier edition of this book. I am a mathematician picking up some computer science coursework, and have noticed a few errors in the book and accompanying solutions manual, and it surprises me that these would go unnoticed so long as to survive into the ninth edition.

The last two sentences at the bottom of page 109 contradict one another.

I discussed Problem 15.4 on page 475 with my instructor, who shared with me the approach followed in the solutions manual. In the manual, it is assumed that the average distance between stations is .375 km. The reasoning used to support this, which sounds very convincing, is in fact wrong, as average distance to a receiving station does NOT decrease LINEARLY as the transmitting station moves away from the endpoints of the bus. It actually decreases in a parabolic fashion. You can use a little calculus to show that the average distance between stations approaches 1/3 km as the number of stations increases. That's an error in estimation of 12.5%. While it makes only an insignificant difference in the context of the given problem (induces an error of less than 1% in the final solution), that error would be appreciable were the transmission speed higher or the bus longer.

The author's presentation of probability concepts in Chapter 24 leaves a lot to be desired. Figure 24.6 on page 780 is misleading. The "overlap region" should be depicted as a region on the axis, not as an overlapping of areas under probability density function graphs. My instructor shared the solutions manual answers to problem 24.4 with me, a problem involving a conditional probability computation, and the graph presented for part (a) makes no sense; probability density functions enclose an area of 1 unit ALWAYS, so the graphs of the two density functions must have identical area, which is clearly not what is presented. The misunderstanding of "overlap region" is again apparent in this solutions manual answer. What intrigues me is that the answer to part (b) given in the solutions manual is, while imprecise, essentially correct, but no explanation is given. I cannot fathom how one would arrive at the provided answer using the author's misguided notions of probability theory. Did he ask a mathematician to solve the problem, and then copy his answer into the manual? Perhaps the author could get a mathematician to contribute to the presentation of the probability concepts in the text.

Overall, this has been a good book from which to learn the subject. It has been updated to reflect the state-of-the-practice in data communications. However, read with a critical mindset (ALWAYS). Almost every book has at least a few minor errors. I can forgive most, but not the presentation of probability concepts in this book.

Probably not a good book for newbies

This book is inadequate for people without a decent amount of experience with data communications. The book regularly jumps between from extremely basic to fairly complex information making wild assumptions at the reader's base knowledge. An example of this is evident early on when the book starts by going into detail on what the parts of a wave are and then expecting you to understand Fourier Analysis to the T with very little explanation a few pages later. Charts and diagrams included in the book are referred to pages before and after they actually appear, leading to a lot of flipping back and forth. The charts are also poorly explained and detailed, often leaving out important bits of information that most people with limited knowledge wouldn't be expected to know. The review questions aren't worded well, and often leave you wondering whether or not the author had anyone from outside of his department (or even in his department) actually review his writing.

Sadly, since this is a required reading for my class, there's really nothing I could do to get away from this book. I'd assume that the majority of people looking to purchase this book are in the same position.

Honestly, I could only recommend this to people looking for a refresher on data and computer communications.
