Julie of the Wolves (HarperClassics), by Jean Craighead George

Jean Craighead George’s Newbery Medal–winning classic about an Eskimo girl lost on the Alaskan tundra now features bonus content. This edition, perfect for classroom or home use, includes John Schoenherr’s original scratchboard illustrations throughout, as well as extra materials such as an introduction written by Jean Craighead George’s children, the author’s Newbery acceptance speech, selections from her field notebooks, a discussion guide, and a further reading guide.

Julie of the Wolves is a staple in the canon of children’s literature and the first in the Julie trilogy. The survival theme makes it a good pick for readers of other wilderness stories such as My Side of the Mountain, Hatchet, or Island of the Blue Dolphins.

To her small Eskimo village, she is known as Miyax; to her friend in San Francisco, she is Julie. When her life in the village becomes dangerous, Miyax runs away, only to find herself lost in the Alaskan wilderness.

Miyax tries to survive by copying the ways of a pack of wolves and soon grows to love her new wolf family. Life in the wilderness is a struggle, but when she finds her way back to civilization, Miyax is torn between her old and new lives. Is she Miyax of the Eskimos—or Julie of the wolves?

Amazon.com Review
Miyax, like many adolescents, is torn. But unlike most, her choices may determine whether she lives or dies. At 13, an orphan, and unhappily married, Miyax runs away from her husband's parents' home, hoping to reach San Francisco and her pen pal. But she becomes lost in the vast Alaskan tundra, with no food, no shelter, and no idea which is the way to safety. Now, more than ever, she must look hard at who she really is. Is she Miyax, Eskimo girl of the old ways? Or is she Julie (her "gussak"-white people-name), the modernized teenager who must mock the traditional customs? And when a pack of wolves begins to accept her into their community, Miyax must learn to think like a wolf as well. If she trusts her Eskimo instincts, will she stand a chance of surviving? John Schoenherr's line drawings suggest rather than tell about the compelling experiences of a girl searching for answers in a bleak landscape that at first glance would seem to hold nothing. Fans of Jean Craighead George's stunning, Newberry Medal-winning coming-of-age story won't want to miss Julie (1994) and Julie's Wolf Pack (1998). (Ages 10 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Review
“The whole book has a rare, intense reality which the artist enhances beautifully with animated drawings.” (The Horn Book)

“Jean George has captured the subtle nuances of Eskimo life, animal habits, the pain of growing up, and combines these elements into a thrilling adventure which is, at the same time, a poignant love story.” (School Library Journal (starred review))

“The evocatively written, empathetic story effectively evokes the nature of wolves and dramatizes how the traditional Eskimo way of life is giving way before the relentless onlaught of civilization.” (ALA Booklist)

“It is a book anyone who loves the outdoors will find hard to forget.” (Boston Globe)

“[Jean Craighead George’s] novel is packed with expert wolf lore, its narrative beautifully conveying the sweeping vastness of tundra as well as many other aspects of the Arctic, ancient and modern, animal and human. It is refreshing to see the Arctic well portrayed through a woman’s eyes.” (New York Times)

A classic for nature lovers
By Oden
An excellent book full of natural and cultural history. Some events, though necessary to the story, will be disturbing to younger readers. It is a spellbinding account of life in Alaska by a very knowledgeable author. I would recommend discussing the issues of rape and hunting and family conflict as the story develops.

Coming of Age Story
By Ohioan
This is the story of Miyax, a thirteen-year-old Eskimo girl who must decide whether to choose her own destiny or let others decide it for her: all within very constricted circumstances. Miyax's mother died years ago, and she lives with her father. But when she is forced to go away to school in another village and live with her aunt, she hears that her father has died. She then does what he told her to do: marry an Eskimo boy named Daniel. This marriage had been arranged by the parents. Miyax marries, but Daniel forces sex on Miyax, and she flees.

The main part of the story tells how Miyax learns to live in the wild, with a pack of wolves, by studying their ways and being accepted by them. If it weren't for the wolves, she would starve to death. Then Miyax learns that her father did not die, he married a white woman and has adopted non-Eskimo ways. Her father wants Miyax to come live with him, but he hunts wolves from a small aircraft, firing down on and killing them. Miyax cannot tolerate this and runs away again, determined to live on her own, in the wild. In the end, she realizes with great sadness that the days of Eskimos living off the land are gone forever, and she returns to her father.

The wilderness scenes with the wolves are wonderful, and Miyax is an empathetic hero. There's a lot going on in this book, plot-wise, and I'm not sure the resolution works, even though it is realistic. But this is a powerful story of a thirteen-year-old girl living on the edge of two different worlds, having to decide which one she will live in.

This was my favorite book when I was in third grade (1989)
By M.W.
This was my favorite book when I was in third grade (1989). I haven't read it since, but I was having some wine and mentioned it so my son bought it for my birthday.

It's a little different than I remember, but it's still fabulous.

I never knew there were sequels (my son bought them for me, too) and I cannot wait to read them!

Outcasts United: An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman's Quest to Make a Difference, by Warren St. John

The extraordinary tale of a refugee youth soccer team and the transformation of a small American town

Clarkston, Georgia, was a typical Southern town until it was designated a refugee settlement center in the 1990s, becoming the first American home for scores of families in flight from the world’s war zones—from Liberia and Sudan to Iraq and Afghanistan. Suddenly Clarkston’s streets were filled with women wearing the hijab, the smells of cumin and curry, and kids of all colors playing soccer in any open space they could find. The town also became home to Luma Mufleh, an American-educated Jordanian woman who founded a youth soccer team to unify Clarkston’s refugee children and keep them off the streets. These kids named themselves the Fugees.

Set against the backdrop of an American town that without its consent had become a vast social experiment, Outcasts United follows a pivotal season in the life of the Fugees and their charismatic coach. Warren St. John documents the lives of a diverse group of young people as they miraculously coalesce into a band of brothers, while also drawing a fascinating portrait of a fading American town struggling to accommodate its new arrivals. At the center of the story is fiery Coach Luma, who relentlessly drives her players to success on the soccer field while holding together their lives—and the lives of their families—in the face of a series of daunting challenges.

This fast-paced chronicle of a single season is a complex and inspiring tale of a small town becoming a global community—and an account of the ingenious and complicated ways we create a home in a changing world.

From Publishers Weekly
St. John (Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer) builds on his 2007 New York Times article about the Fugees, a soccer program for boys from families of refugees from war-torn nations who have been resettled in the town of Clarkston, Ga., 13 miles east of Atlanta. Led by the founder and coach Luma Mufleh, a strong-willed, Jordanian woman who turned her back on a privileged past to stay in America after attending Smith College, the three youth teams are a conglomeration of players from Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East. The challenges they face are many, including an ongoing fight against city hall for a field on which to play, and getting by with subpar equipment. Their biggest challenge, however, is the difficulty immigrants face in learning the ways of a strange land and living with the memories of tragedy (some players had lost a parent to violence or imprisonment). In spite of it all, the Fugees compete admirably with mostly white, better-funded suburban teams. St. John begins with an inspiring description of a beautifully played game and then delves into the team's formation, but his storytelling takes on the methodical approach of a long series of newspaper articles that lack narrative flair and progression. From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—St. John, a New York Times reporter, brought Clarkston, GA, to national attention in 2007 with a series of articles about the changes in the small Southern town brought about by an influx of refugees from all over the world. This book comes out of those articles. It gives more detail about the town and, most particularly, the three soccer teams composed of refugee boys (the Fugees) who were coached by Luma Mufleh, an American-educated Jordanian woman. The book is a sports story, a sociological study, a tale of global and local politics, and the story of a determined woman who became involved in the lives of her young charges. Keeping the boys in school and out of gangs, finding a place for them to practice, and helping their families survive in a new world all became part of her daily life. Engagingly written, this volume will appeal to fans of Larry Colton's Counting Coup (Grand Central, 2000), H. G. Bissinger's Friday Night Lights (HarperCollins, 1991), and Madeleine Blais's In These Girls, Hope Is a Muscle (Grand Central, 1996).—Sarah Flowers, formerly at Santa Clara County Library, CA

Review
"Not merely about soccer, St. John's book teaches readers about the social and economic difficulties of adapting to a new culture and the challenges facing a town with a new and disparate population. Despite their cultural and religious differences and the difficulty of adaptation, the Fugees came together to play soccer. This wonderful, poignant book is highly recommended..."
–Library Journal, starred review

A "richly detailed, uplifting account of a young Jordanian immigrant who created a soccer program in Georgia for young refugees from war-torn nations . . . educational and enriching."
– Kirkus Reviews

"St. John hits a trifecta . . . A fascinating and fast-moving account of big-picture politics, small-town sports, and some very memorable people."
–Booklist

"Inspiring...richly detailed...Deeply satisfying...a bighearted book."
–Shelf Awareness

"As St. John tells it, the Fugees’ story is something of a radical social experiment: a test case in 21st-century immigration and identity politics. But it’s also a deeply moving example of what men and women of goodwill can do."
–Very Short List

“A brilliant and empathetic depiction of our common quest for meaning and happiness. Warren St. John invites us into the lives of a community of refugees, their bewildered neighbors in a small town, and a Jordanian woman who not only coaches but also mentors, mothers, and inspires some remarkable boys, to create a heartwarming tale about the transformations that occur when our disparate lives connect.”
–Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone

“Truly unforgettable, Outcasts United offers a stirring lesson in the power of a single person to transform the lives of many. It’s an incisive window into the world ahead for all of us, where cultural diversity won’t be an ideal or a course requirement or a corporate initiative but a fact of life that has to be wrestled with and reconciled, if never quite resolved.”

Great perspective for the suburban soccer parent, coach, referee
By CHenry
I purchased this book (unabridged) at Audible.com and have listened to it several times over the last couple of years. It's one of my favorite listens. As a long-time suburban soccer parent, coach, and referee, I can relate to many of the stories told in this book of Luma and her players. My nine year old son and I also listened to this this past summer on a long road trip and he enjoyed it as well. There were some parts that he didn't understand or had questions about, so we would pause the playback and talk about things like emigration, poverty, war, and the importance of a good offside trap.

I saw this book again in my Audible library the other day and am looking forward to hearing it again and connecting up again with my friends on the Fugees. The program continues today, and you can find out current info over at fugeesfamily.org.

Wonderful Read
By 1nk3dBr33
I chose this book from a course list for an undergrad liberal arts paper. I grew up playing soccer and thought, "I love soccer, and there is most likely something deeper to this story but it beats reading a biography or historical event novel." I very pleasantly surprised! This tugged on my heart strings, brought a smile to my face, a tear to my eye, and had me disgusted and appalled by various people/events throughout the book. I just finished the audio book while I was waiting for the paperback to arrive. Very well written. This story is honest, horrible and wonderful all at the same time. Many opportunities to step back and wonder: Do I think like that? How do I feel about this? What would I do if that happened?

A deeply inspiring story reflecting the overall immigrant experience
By Teach Immigration
Warren St. John relates the story of Luma Mufleh, a Jordanian responsible for serving the refugee community of Clarkston, Georgia. After graduating from Smith College, Ms. Mufleh decided to stay in the United States, as opportunities for women were few and far between in Jordan. As a result of this decision, her old-guard parents disowned her and she was left to fend for herself. A lifelong soccer enthusiast, she was surprised to see countless immigrant youths playing pickup games of soccer in empty lots in Clarkston. She organized a group into a team called The Fugees, pairing rigorous soccer practices with mandatory after-school classes. Managing 45 young men between the ages of 10 and 17 is no easy task, as St. John shows us thorough Mufleh's struggles to build solidarity and confidence amongst group of immigrants from all over the world. The author shows us, through first-person interviews with Mufleh, the players and their families, the tenacity and spirit of those who seek refuge from war-torn countries only to encounter difficulties in their new homes. Clarkston's mayor as well as a number of law enforcement officers and civil servants do all they can to prevent the Fugees from finding a home playing field, despite Mufleh's passionate advocacy of her charges. St. John points out how refugees' struggles in Clarkston are a microcosm of the immigrant experience as a whole. This deeply inspiring story is told artfully, in thoroughly readable prose.

In 2005 he was awarded the Venice International Film Festival's Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement, and his Studio Ghibli received the festival's Osella Award for overall achievement in 2004. Miyazaki's films include Spirited Away, winner of the 2002 Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo, all of which have received great acclaim in the U.S. Miyazaki's other achievements include the highly regarded manga series Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Starting Point: 1979-1996, a collection of essays, interviews, and memoirs that chronicle his early career and the development of his theories of animation. Both are published in English by VIZ Media.

From the Master Himself
By Shayleen Daley
If you read Starting Point, his collection of essays and interviews from 1979-1996, you'll love Turning Point. It follows the same format, showing translated articles from various interviews/essays/notes/sketches. It really helps to expand the understanding of the various films he's made and worked on. You get to read in his own words what he thinks of them, his inspirations, and low points, what he considered the best and the worst. There are also parts where he talks simply about his opinion on the state of the world, his interpretation of nature, films, animation, the conditions necessary to raise a child just to name a few.

In short, if you want to have a more robust understanding of Miyazaki Hayao and where he's coming from, buy this book. After you read Starting Point of course. This is a continuation of that and it shows his growth as a person and animator. He's not perfect. He admits he has faults, that he's not the best person. But he's honest and true to his vision and someone I greatly respect for sticking to his beliefs.

Not quite what I was hoping for from someone who enjoyed "Starting Point."
By Jon
Really enjoyed this book but I had issues with so many interviews being similar. So you end up reading the same questions and same responses repeatedly. I also thought it was naive of Miyazaki to grossly generalize people on quite a few occasions in the interviews. In several parts he pretty much says Americans could never understand some aspect of cinema because their movies are all about blowing stuff up and that's what they all enjoy. I mean there are variations of this kind of thing where he takes American POP CULTURE (ACK!) and uses it to generalize 300 million people. He does throw around other generalizations about Japan, Europe etc as well. Anyhow, I did get a lot of what I was hoping for too. You get a sense of where he got certain ideas for movies and why he made certain decisions in directing a film a certain way. You can get some of these ideas about Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle. Anyways, it was very much like the previous book, "Starting Point" but this one (Turning Point) was mostly interviews, some poems, and a few essays or they might've been speeches. No articles that I can remember. There were chunks of content that could've been left out without losing anything. As I said, content is repeated in a few places. Far worse in the first half of the book. Worth reading for people who want more insight into this masterful director with the understanding that there are a few awkward and unrelated comments to take with a grain of salt.

I still give it four stars because for good or bad, it's mostly what I wanted. And in the afterword, Miyazaki writes about how uncomfortable he was/is about the book. That he felt it misrepresented him or at least didn't identify fully with the book in some ways which is probably the nature of biographies. Views change and also generalizations fade when you're standing in front of someone shaking their hand. And besides, pretty much everyone is contrary at some point, and it's going to be especially obvious when interview after interview is documented like this.

Excellent reference source
By A Customer
This book is an excellent reference guide for the experienced and inexperienced production economist. The last chapter is essentially a recap of the other six chapters, so if you're short on time, that's all you need. But, reading the first six will give a better idea of what he's really talking about. I recommend it highly.

Love it, will buy more Arch books
By Kathleen
Love the book! I'm glad that it had the scriptures I could go to in my daughter's children's bible so we could read the story of Easter after reading the week that led to Easter on Holy Week. I didn't really like that they said Judas didn't believe in Jesus anymore, but I'm sure that's a hard thing to explain to a child and the writer did the best they could!

A great little book!
By Christina R
My son is 3.5 and he loved me reading this to him. I think it's a great tool to have for teaching children the importance of this week. I was a little worried at his age he wouldn't understand it but the way it's written, I was able to explain it and he recited what was happening from page to page. It is a small book, but worth it!

A very nice way to tell a somber story
By B. Seeman
We were looking for some books to prepare our barely 4 year old son for Easter this season and wanted something that acknowledged the story truthfully but wasn't frightening or overwhelming. This is a simple book with appropriate illustrations and is well priced. I plan to order more from this company to go along with Bible lessons.

Assessment Sensitivity: Relative Truth and its Applications (Context & Content), by John MacFarlane

John MacFarlane debates how we might make sense of the idea that truth is relative, and how we might use this idea to give satisfying accounts of parts of our thought and talk that have resisted traditional methods of analysis. Although there is a substantial philosophical literature on relativism about truth, going back to Plato's Theaetetus, this literature (both pro and con) has tended to focus on refutations of the doctrine, or refutations of these refutations, at the expense of saying clearly what the doctrine is. In contrast, Assessment Sensitivity begins with a clear account of what it is to be a relativist about truth, and uses this view to give satisfying accounts of what we mean when we talk about what is tasty, what we know, what will happen, what might be the case, and what we ought to do. The book seeks to provide a richer framework for the description of linguistic practices than standard truth-conditional semantics affords: one that allows not just standard contextual sensitivity (sensitivity to features of the context in which an expression is used), but assessment sensitivity (sensitivity to features of the context from which a use of an expression is assessed).

The Context and Content series is a forum for outstanding original research at the intersection of philosophy, linguistics, and cognitive science. The general editor is Francois Recanati (Institut Jean-Nicod, Paris).

Insightfully Boring
By Amazon Customer
The information presented in this book is important and useful. Great examples are used to help understand material. There are practice quizzes at the end of each chapter. There are also practice questions throughout the chapters to help remember important terms and ideas. However, the layout of the book is extremely boring, making it very difficult to read. The cover is enticing but once you open the book, it's white and black with absolutely no color. The chapters are also poorly organized and makes it very easy to get lost. There are very few pictures to help visualize what you're learning. If the book wasn't so boring to look at it would be worth every penny.

Oh, the wonders of behavioral psychology..
By spoilsoflife124
I love the subject. This book covers a lot on operant and classical conditioning, as well as schedules of reinforcement, generalization and discrimination, and so on. I wish the book had been even longer. It doesn't cover visual analysis, but this wasn't for an ABA class (at least not for me). My class used the newer version (2013) but also allowed for this version. The newer book was around $200, so I went with this one.. It was a tiny bit different and the chapters were in the same order as the newer one but off by one. For instance, chapter 5 in this book was actually chapter 4 in the newer book. But I got an A in the class and had no problems at all with this book. If you're interested in ABA or behavioral psych, buy this book. Don't rent it. It's a great read and reread.

After the Wrath of God: AIDS, Sexuality, and American Religion, by Anthony M. Petro

On a cold February morning in 1987, amidst freezing rain and driving winds, a group of protesters stood outside of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Amherst, Massachusetts. The target of their protest was the minister inside, who was handing out condoms to his congregation while delivering a sermon about AIDS, dramatizing the need for the church to confront the seemingly ever-expanding crisis. The minister's words and actions were met with a standing ovation from the overflowing audience, but he could not linger to enjoy their applause. Having received threats in advance of the service, he dashed out of the sanctuary immediately upon finishing his sermon. Such was the climate for religious AIDS activism in the 1980s.

In After the Wrath of God, Anthony Petro vividly narrates the religious history of AIDS in America. Delving into the culture wars over sex, morality, and the future of the American nation, he demonstrates how religious leaders and AIDS activists have shaped debates over sexual morality and public health from the 1980s to the present day. While most attention to religion and AIDS foregrounds the role of the Religious Right, Petro takes a much broader view, encompassing the range of mainline Protestant, evangelical, and Catholic groups--alongside AIDS activist organizations--that shaped public discussions of AIDS prevention and care in the U.S. Petro analyzes how the AIDS crisis prompted American Christians across denominations and political persuasions to speak publicly about sexuality--especially homosexuality--and to foster a moral discourse on sex that spoke not only to personal concerns but to anxieties about the health of the nation. He reveals how the epidemic increased efforts to advance a moral agenda regarding the health benefits of abstinence and monogamy, a legacy glimpsed as much in the traction gained by abstinence education campaigns as in the more recent cultural purchase of gay marriage.

The first book to detail the history of religion and the AIDS epidemic in the U.S., After the Wrath of God is essential reading for anyone concerned with the intersection of religion and public health.

Review
"Moralizing of a particular religious stripe seems indelibly attached to some of the most dire public health issues of our time. [...] What After the Wrath does is demonstrate how and why this moralizing has wiggled into even our most enlightened and progressive health policies. Behavior judgments-particularly of sexual behavior-continue to shape public policy but Petro provides us with a useful tool for identifying those judgments, and parsing their meaning." -- The Revealer

"After the Wrath of God is a subtle, discerning analysis of religious responses to AIDS that goes far beyond the usual attention to the Christian Right. Petro brings ecumenical Protestants, Roman Catholics, biomedical officials, and ACT UP protestors into view alongside their evangelical compatriots and in doing so creates a richly polychromatic picture of American religion, sexuality, and moral debate in the wake of the AIDS epidemic." --Leigh Eric Schmidt, Edward C. Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor, Washington University in St. Louis

"The AIDS crisis was not an epoch that we survived. It is a battle that we are still fighting. In this remarkable work of historical intervention Anthony Petro explores the extraordinary religious ferment that accompanied the emergence of AIDS in the United States. Petro shows that when Americans talk about AIDS they are rarely just talking about a scientific problem or a pharmaceutical solution. They are instead offering a sociology of suffering and a plan for spiritual warfare. After the Wrath of God is required reading for anyone interested in the way this powerful religious past will shape our political future." --Kathryn Lofton, Professor of Religious Studies, American Studies, History and Divinity; Chair, Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Yale University

"Anthony Petro's novel account of the role of American Christianity in the AIDS crisis moves beyond expected narratives of the rise of the right to encompass a diversity of religious responses across the 'long 1980s.' Illuminating and important." --Margot Canaday, Associate Professor of History, Princeton University

"With clear prose that is free of theoretical jargon, this account is a suitable purchase for public and academic libraries..." --Library Journal

"Provides a new perspective on US religious history during a time of considerable shifts in US politics. This will be a valuable book for those interested in history and sexuality studies as well as religious studies. It may also be useful to those in public health and medicine. Highly recommended." --Choice

"[An] excellent book." --The Guardian

"Petro is an heir to the historical perspective of Michel Foucault in showing how social changes that may appear liberatory or progressive often involve the consolidation of more conservative and normative values and constraints. After the Wrath of God will benefit both readers who think they already know this history because they lived it and readers who have always lived under the shadow of HIV/AIDS and never known a world without it." --Elizabeth A. Castelli, e-misférica: Performance and Politics in the Americas

Chosen by fate to become the Dragon Reborn--savior and destroyer of his world--young Rand al'Thor attempts to outrun his destiny by joining in a mad search for the lost Horn of Valere. Continuing the story begun in The Eye of the World ( LJ 2/15/90), Jordan creates a lush, sprawling tapestry of a novel in the tradition of Tolkien and Eddings. Recommended where fantasy is popular.

Two Down... I Think I'll Go for a Third
By Michael Glaviano
At first I thought I'd just read the first book in the series to satisfy my curiosity. After all, I'd heard about the "Wheel of Time" for quite a while. I had mixed feelings about Book One, but, after reading Book Two I'm getting into the story more. Character development is critical to my enjoyment of a story -- especially one so long as the WOT. I'm pleased to report that even though many of them remain sketchy, Jordan is certainly developing the characters more. Further, many of Jordan's characters start out young and naive. Through the course of the story, those characters grow up. I like that.

Finally, I think the writing is consistently good. Occasionally, Jordan will come up w/ a phrase or a description that is elegant and striking. Those gems are worth noticing.

I have read some reviews that criticize this series as being too derivative of the "Lord of the Rings," and I think I understand that complaint. I do see similarities, and some of them are unfortunate. At the same time, the concept of an epic battle between Good and Evil transcends the LOTR, so it seems a bit unrealistic to write this series off because of places where the WOT veers a bit closer than I'd like.

In particular, I think Jordan's main characters are quite distinct from Tolkien's. And more to the point, the battle in WOT is between the Hero and the Face of Evil (capitalized here because they represent archetypes). OTOH, in the LOTR, the main thread of the story focuses on the destruction of an artifact. So, at this point at least, I see more than enough distinction between the stories to hold my interest.

So I guess I'll give Book Three a try.

Good book in a GREAT series.
By Sean
Second novel in one of the greatest series ever written. Not the best in the series, but not the worst either. If you've read the first and you are considering continuing, you really should. If you haven't read the first, start with "The Eye of the World". As one progresses through the series more and more characters are added which may be daunting for new readers of fantasy, but all the characters stories are interesting and move the plot along nicely.

Names of places and people can be confusing for those not used to fantasy writing, but the author conveniently provides a pronunciation guide at the end of the novel that can easily be referenced (although the presence of such a thing is telling in-and-of itself).

This series as a whole has everything one could wish for from high fantasy: action, magic, politics, history, relationships, character growth, triumph, betrayal, hope, tragedy, comedy. Not as dark as A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), not as light as Narnia, not as magical as Harry Potter, not as political as Malazan, and not as historical as Lord of the Rings. However, what this series accomplishes is a blend of all of these in a masterful work of art that is unrivaled in balance across themes.

RIP Robert Jordan, may your work be preserved from the turning of the wheel to delight future generations, time without end.

Character and story development unbelievable
By Jennifer E. Escue
5 star rating bc of ability to develop characters and connect what seem to be a "neverending" story. I find myself wanted to dive back into this fantasy world multiple times a day. Lan, Nynaeve, Minnesota, and Loial are my favorite characters. Although it seems cliche to say, these are a mixture of every single fantasy book or story I have read and combined all in one book.

I asked my friend for a recommendation for a book, and one specifically that hadn't been made into a movie. I've read a movie was once supposed to be made for Wheel of Time, but efforts were unsuccessful. Although a movie is enticing, there is really no need to ruin such a magical story. Amazing books! I recommend to everyone who loves sci-fi, fantasy.
