What do you need to know to enjoy Japanese cooking at home?
Here, in Kimiko Barber's seminal work, is found the standards for all of Sushi preparation. From rice preparation (and, the variations on the delicate vinegar/sugar/salt seasoning for Sushi Meshi), to choosing and preparing fish, shellfish, and roe; and, the famous Japanese omelet and its variations; and, how to make pressed Sushi, Nigiri, Hand Formed, and Scattered Sushi - you simply cannot find a more concise and definitive guide.
Add to your bookshelf: Japanese Cooking, A Simple Art by Shizuo Tsuji; and, every book by Harris Salat and Tadashi Ono (Japanese Hot Pots, The Japanese Grill, Japanese Soul Cooking), the works of Elizabeth Andoh: Washoku: Recipes from the Japanese Home Kitchen,
Kansha: Celebrating Japan's Vegan and Vegetarian Traditions.

Perhaps *the* book on sushi

No other work that I have ever laid my hands on has been such a masterful treatment of sushi, unless that work was a hefty tome that would end up languishing on a shelf. This book covers everything anyone from a beginner to a master would need, and does it in a total size that you can pack with you on a trip or in any kitchen.

What you get:

-History. It makes a massive difference to your sushi appreciation, and your cooking, when you know where sushi came from. Vinegar-laden rice began as a preservation method, protecting fresh coastal fish for inland transport. Tips like these provide insight into why you prepare sushi the way you do, that no simple ingredient list can ever convey.

-Information. Not only do you get a breakdown of traditional and modern ingredients and tools, but also thorough breakdowns of why you use what items and what the pitfalls may be- for example, how the "wasabi paste" in your local market probably isn't wasabi.

-Building blocks. It's been said that you can put basically anything into a sushi roll, so where a book really needs good focus is on preparing the rice, technique for rolling, and generally everything before the "recipe" of what to throw in the roll. This book includes all the building blocks in the necessary detail.

-Plenty of advanced tips. Individual butcher diagrams of common fish and how to prepare them. Recipes to put your fundamentals into practice are delicious and well placed, from the simple to the nearly impossible. Tool lists include all of the rare, authentic, and historic items so even a master chef might find a piece to experiment with.

Simply put, if you want to make or enjoy sushi, you need this book now. No other work is even close to being this concise, while maintaining the proper depth of information.

Loved the book

I'm a sushi beginner and based on other people's review I purchased this book. I cooked sushi rice about 10 times now and it came out perfect every time (and I'm not using the rice cooker)! My rolls look and taste just like at a sushi bar. Great instructions and illustrations for everything: from all types of fish to necessary equipment and sushi making instructions. This book has what you'll need to learn how to make, serve and enjoy delicious and beautiful sushi. However, keep in mind that this book only mentions soy and tamari souses. I had to ask my local sushi shef the names of my favorite sauces he used on my sushimi and maki rolls: i.e. unagi (eel) and ponzu souses. Overall, I am very pleased with the book and literally cooking something new couple of times a week.

Terry Brooks is the greatest fantasy writer of all time.

I read "THe Elfstones of Shanarra" over 20 years ago. When the "Chronicles of Shannara" came out on MTV I watched them and said to myself, "I don't remember this."
So I decided to reread Elfstones and found it just as exciting as the first time, since I had forgotten much of the detail.
It is a great starter book with which to start reading the series.
Be sure to go ahead and read "The Wishsong of Shannara" in which you will meet Wil's children. I just reread that and it is even better.
From that point you can fly anywhere. Go back to "Sword" go ahead to "Scions" or even back to "Genesis" (dare you go back to "Running with the Demon).

Brin and Jair Ohmsford, children of Wil Ohmsford and the Rover girl, Eretria, are young adults with the power of the Elfstones that Wil carried on his journey to help Amberle Elessedil find the Bloodfire and restore the Ellcrys and the Forbidding that held the demons sealed up from the old world, transformed into a different power, that of the Wishsong. For Brin, it eventually becomes something that is almost terrifying as she travels with the Druid, Allanon and the Highlander prince, Rone Leah, to destroy an evil book called the Ildatch. For Jair it becomes a means to help his companions on a quest that he had not known he was to undertake, to save Brin from herself and her wishsong. Traveling companions that neither of them could foresee join them along the way, and both question whether they are capable of the tasks assigned them. A must read for any fantasy fan!

I really loved this series of the three original Shannara books

I really loved this series of the three original Shannara books, The Sword, The Elfstones and The Wishsong. I read them when I was in high school for the first time. I enjoyed them just as much this time. I always get to the end and cannot decide which in this series is my favorite. That being said, The Wishsong is another wonderful dimension to the series. Terry Brooks does a wonderful job at unfolding the events in way that makes you want to keep turning the pages. The journey is an adventure you'll not soon forget. I know that some criticism comes from the parallels people draw from Tolkein, but really take the time to read Brooks. There are some parallels, but he does develop a wonderful and imaginative story that is all his own work and one I really loved. Great characters, he develops wonderful heroes and heroines that you can believe in.

It's like most Med-Surg books. It contradicts itself in several places, the pages are onion skin, and it's boring to look at. However, my program required it. But, like my last nursing program, they're going over to the Ignatavicius book.

A theology mediates between a cultural matrix and the significance and role of a religion in that matrix. The classicist notion of culture was normative: at least de jure there was but one culture that was both universal and permanent; to its norms and ideals might aspire the uncultured, whether they were the young or the people or the natives or the barbarians. Besides the classicist, there also is the empirical notion of culture. It is the set of meanings and values that informs a way of life. It may remain unchanged for ages. It may be in process of slow development or rapid dissolution.When the classicist notion of culture prevails, theology is conceived as a permanent achievement, and then one discourses on its nature. When culture is conceived empirically, theology is known to be an ongoing process, and then one writes on its method.

This is a brilliant investigation on method in philosophy, is a complement work of Insight, but in itself "method" is a real and profound guide about understanding. Highly recommend this book because for me it is a "formulary" which you can constantly turn and always brings fresh and interesting ideas.

Major Brilliance.

This a major work of the 20th century in all areas of human knowledge and wisdom. Lonergan's research and "method" can be applied to any field of human endeavor from quantum theory to astro cosmology. Profound and far-reaching, it is an accute examination of how our minds work. Lonergan applies it to theology but it is universally valid.

Great introduction to Bernard Lonergan. Nice that this older reprint still exists. The new critical editions, as useful as they may be to the scholar are cost prohibitive to the novice. Thank you the university of Toronto for keeping this now oldie in print.

A doable method for self health. Good starting place!

Great starter book for Ayurveda. Could use a glossary and maybe photos of different physical features for different doahas.

But a good overview. Not preachy or pushy. I can almost hear the author speaking in a soft affirming voice as I read. Makes me feel like I could get a handle on this self awareness technique and apply it for better well being daily. Author encourages small changes so no pressure.

If you want to get into this ancient medical practice for self health, be warned it will require lifestyle changes and diet shifts. No magic bullet here. Just a lot of awareness of how everything from seasons to food to life events affect you daily and how to avoid accumulating an excess of any one kind of 'energy' within your system. A willingness to make changes is required

For millions of people this is the only 'medicine' available to them. But it works and has thousands of years to back it up unlike our side effect ridden Wishy washy western medicine! And no one looking to get rich off unnecessary meds.

Glad I bought it! Will be read and referenced repeatedly!

If one has an interest in holistic health this is a must have. Besides being lovely to look at there is a wealth of natural applications for wellness. I have practiced a holistic approach to my life closing in on 40 years. It is nice edition to my library.. Suggest you write your name and address inside I think if loaned it may not find its way home.

This could save my life!!!!!!

I recommend this book to anyone with diabetes. The book will help anyone that is suffering from Diabetic Neuropathy of the Feet and Legs. I had a lot of pain on the bottom of my feet and some of the Food I read about stopped the swelling of my feet and returned them to normal.

Teach Yourself Visually Photoshop CS2

I'll keep this focused on what I learned since there are some in-depth reviews already. All I can say is AMAZING! I knew absolutely NOTHING about Photoshop - Zero. I opened this book beside my computer and went through each tutorial in the 300+ pages. By the time I finished the last tutorial, I was proficient enough to create some amazing photos to use on my websites - One has 58 layers, special effects, incredible lighting effects, color matching, perfecting blending of three totally different photos into one, even the header for our website was created using Photoshop CS2. My pride and joy is a photo I created of a lonely teenager walking down a desolate road for our film production website - Actually it is so amazing that we are also using it for the large movie poster - The lonely road was an old photo I took years ago on family property in northern Arizona. It was crooked and poorly shot with a cheap camera. I totally changed it using Photoshop CS2. I removed the drab sky and replaced it with a sky that was dark where it needed to be, but also has multiple layers of semi-transparent light puffy clouds that allowed light to shine through and be cast on the boy, creating a shadow that perfectly matched actual shadows cast by the surrounding trees. in the original photo I added very intricate twigs to the trees to give them the shape and character they needed to portray, perfectly matching each individual tree. The lonely teen was created 100% in Photoshop CS2, including his shadow that fell on the road. Because I wanted him in dirty sneakers, I shot a photo of an old pair I had by placing them in a 'walking' position, then added them to the teenager All of this was done by using the knowledge I gained by going through this book. Literally everyone I showed the photo to wanted to know who the teenager was that I photographed. I don't want to mislead anyone: This book did not tell me HOW to create a person in Photoshop CS2, but using the knowledge I gained from the tutorials in the book and my own ingenuity, I created that lonely teen. I have a shelf in my studio full of "For Dummies" books, but when it comes to Photoshop CS2, this book is all I needed.

for the hands on learner such as myself this is perfect.

To do this, you do that. To do that you do this. I have always thought a software instruction manual should always have fewer words then keystrokes for each action. Very hard to do but this one comes close. Excellent illustrations. But if you want all the subtleties explained to you, as you go through it this is probably not for you.

I am using this book at present, and I am a relative beginner, so keep that in mind as you weigh my comments, but this seems to be working for me.

Also if you are like me doing CS2 because adobe has made the software license virtually free, this is for you.

Review of Photoshop CS2 "Teach Yourself VISUALLY" book

Photoshop is a very complex program. Over the years, I've bought a shelf full of "how-to" books in an attempt to master it. I'm not a professional photographer...and THIS is the first book that makes it simple to follow and learn the multiple steps needed to get the results I'm trying to achieve without overloading me with so much technical detail that I give up in frustration. I highly recommend it. You should get the specific book for the version of Photoshop YOU are using. As an aside - I recently upgraded my laptop and have Office 2010. I bought the WORD 2010 "Visual" book - it's awesome.
