Starred Review. It is a truism that everyone seeks happiness, but public manifestations of it have not always been free of recrimination. Colonial regimes have defined spectacles as an inherently "primitive" act and elders harrumph at youthful exultation. Social critic and bestselling author Ehrenreich (Nickel and Dimed) teases out the many incarnations of sanctioned public revelry, starting with the protofeminist oreibasia, or Dionysian winter dance, in antiquity, and from there covering trance, ancient mystery cults and carnival, right up to the rock and roll and sports-related mass celebrations of our own day. "Why is so little left" of such rituals, she asks, bemoaning the "loss of ecstatic pleasure." Ehrenreich necessarily delineates the repressive reactions to such ecstasy by the forces of so-called "civilization," reasonably positing that rituals of joy are nearly as innate as the quest for food and shelter. Complicating Ehrenreich's schema is her own politicized judgment, dismissing what she sees as the debased celebrations of sporting events while writing approvingly of the 1960s "happenings" of her own youth and the inevitable street theater that accompanies any modern mass protest, yet all but ignoring the Burning Man festival in Nevada and tut-tutting ravers' reliance on artificial ecstasy. At a time when social scientists are lamenting the loss of a sense of community, Ehrenreich offers an absorbing look at the joy of life expressed in communal rituals of dance and celebration. From cave drawings through the celebrations of weddings, religious rites, healing, and war preparations of various cultures to modern "carnivalization" of sports celebrations, she traces the appeal of synchronizing individual movements to a group. Western culture, with little understanding of the ecstasy of love expressed in group celebrations, has looked on such celebrations as primitive hysterics and banned them among African slaves, Native Americans, and other cultures. But Ehrenreich details a long history of such celebrations in European cultures, from the festivals of Dionysus to those of medieval Christians. She also explores other cultures' reactions to dance celebrations they viewed as somehow socially or spiritually subversive, whether it's Protestants banning carnivals or Wahhabist Muslims frowning on ecstatic Sufism. Given the social nature of humans, Ehrenreich is optimistic that the drive to "civilize" will never fully eliminate the impulse for group celebration. Vanessa Bush

A celebration of dancing and a condemnation of the authorities

Barbara Ehrenreich's DANCING IN THE STREETS is both a celebration of dancing and a condemnation of the authorities who are trying to prevent large groups of people from running amok in the interests of law and order.

This wonderful book is a potted history of dance, from its roots back in the misty past, through various ancient civilizations and up through the present day. Ms. Ehrenreich conveys how natural it was to dance and how this is a knack that many of us have lost today. People who either live in Northern Europe or can trace their ancestry from that part of the world have difficulty loosening up enough to dance even for a few minutes, let alone for hours or days. And since this somewhat Puritanical attitude has pervaded the world, all of us suffer from a lack of dancing in our lives.

I am in awe of how much research Ms. Ehrenreich has done for this book. Of course, dancing is not just about dancing. In the ancient past, it was used to cure people of sadness. Since the early Middle Ages, it seems to have taken on more political overtones, and people who danced often did so for reasons of social justice. In fact dancing impinged on so many aspects of people's lives from religion (where people danced to their prayers) to the military, to sports. And what is fascinating is how Ms. Ehrenreich argues that relatively recently the young men and women of the 50s and 60s who would not sit down in their seats during a rock concert, were merely reaching back (albeit unconsciously) into a Dionysian past.

For those of you who have often wondered about dancing, and its various social incarnations, this book is for you. Five stars.

Ever heard of Trance Dancing? Sound like fun? You can get together with your friends and try it for yourself. Yes, this is a well researched book about the history of "muscular bonding" among small (tribal) and large (the Roman army)groups and everything in between. This is the history of the "rave"; where it came from and why it emerged again in the 1960's after centuries of repression. Trance dancing, aka Ecstatic Dancing is how we love and bond with each other, strengthen our group identity and togetherness; and it's fun! I enjoyed reading about all the various manifestations of this natural form of human expression. It has showed up in many forms through the ages and will continue on in one form or another as long as humans inhabit this planet. Read this history and you will be inspired to give your inner dancer permission to come out and play much more often. Enjoy.

A pleasure to read, and informative. I found this book interesting throughout, for its coverage of ancient history up through the ages to the present. It offers a unique and welcome perspective on how basic human needs have been expressed and controlled/manipulated by the broader societies.

About the Author

Christian Schuh is the leader of A.T. Kearney’s European Supply Management Practice and is based in Vienna, Austria. He joined A.T. Kearney 17 years ago and has since then led multiple projects for clients in the automotive, construction equipment, defense, high tech, packaging, and steel industry in Austria, China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK, Ukraine and the USA. His areas of expertise include strategic sourcing, product development and organization. He is the author of various books, monographs and articles. Before he joined A.T. Kearney he had worked several years for Unilever. Christian Schuh studied aeronautical engineering at TU Graz (Austria) and holds a doctorate degree in business administration. He lives in the historic city center of Vienna.

 

Joseph L. Raudabaugh is the founder and global leader of A.T. Kearney’s Procurement and Analytic Solutions Practice and is based in Chicago.  He joined A.T. Kearney 27 years ago and has since led projects for clients in the brewing, construction equipment, consumer products, direct marketing, food ingredients, healthcare, industrial products, pharmaceutical, and specialty retail industries in North America, China, Europe, India, Japan and South America.  His areas of expertise include supply management, strategy and organizational development.  He is the author of various monographs and articles.  Joe is also the co-founder of A.T. Kearney’s Student Lab program that engages over 45 clients with students and faculty from Carnegie Mellon University, Chicago Booth School of Business, University of Michigan Ross School of Business, MIT and UCLA’s Anderson School of Business to address operations and strategic business projects in an experiential learning model.  Before joining A.T. Kearney he worked several years for Air Products & Chemicals.  Joseph Raudabaugh studied economics and operations research at N.C. State University and holds and masters in business administration from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

 

Robert Kromoser has been with A.T. Kearney for 13 years. He is based in Vienna, Austria, however gained most of his consulting experience abroad in Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Great Britain and the USA. He is a member of the Operations Practice with a focus on strategic sourcing, procurement transformation and supplier driven innovation. He has led multiple projects in the automotive, construction equipment, building materials, mechanical engineering, and steel industry. In several studies, he analyzed the role of strategic sourcing and procurement as a value-adding factor and is author of several books and articles on procurement. Robert Kromoser studied business administration at Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (Austria) and Carnegie Mellon University (USA). He lives close to Vienna’s famous baroque Augarten.

 

Michael F. Strohmer  is member of A.T.Kearney's Operations Practice and leader of the European raw material competence team.  He is based in Vienna, Austria. In his eleven years with the firm, he has led projects at a broad range of international clients, mainly in post merger situations. His work encompassed the utilities sector, automotive, defense, consumer goods, packaging and steel. He is an expert on raw material strategies, procurement transformation, post merger management and large-scale CAPEX projects. He has published several books and articles and is a frequent speaker at international conferences. Michael F. Strohmer holds a doctorate degree in business administration and law. He lives in Austria's picturesque lake region near Salzburg.

Alenka Triplat is a member of A.T. Kearney ‘s Operations Practice. In eight years with the firm in Vienna, Austria, she has carried out and led multiple projects on supply management topics in construction equipment, packaging, and steel sectors. At Last, an Intelligent Book on Spells and Magick

This book is no joke! It is full of excellent information that cannot be found anywhere else. You can tell the authors spent a lot of time searching through ancient documents to make the material available to the modern reader. As well, Maria D' Andrea does a great job of providing angel spells that are more palatable to a 21st century audience. While Allen Greenfield shows the secret connection behind the UFO mystery and the magickal process. It makes you wonder if yesterday's angels are today's UFO occupants. In a time when the bookshelves are full of stupid trash like magic spells for teens, and The Twilight Guide to Getting Your Own Vampire Lover, I highly recommend this book for the fact that it doesn't speak down to its readers.

It's an amazing book! It makes the contacting of angels practical! It's actually kinda mind-blowing as well...I had to a break from reading it because of how powerful the stuff is. Warning: Do not attempt to use Enochian Keys or any other Angel ritual with an ego or disrecptful attitude. Angels are beings higher then us and they won't respect you if you disrespect them. You will regret it if you use it improperly. Angels are here to help us. Have a good heart and things will be fine. :)

Salt to the Sea

I’ve studied World War II for years. I’ve read countless books, both nonfiction and fiction, and watched a lot of documentaries. My undergrad degree is even in history. But somehow, before SALT TO THE SEA, I’d only heard about the Wilhelm Gustloff once.

One mention of such an immense tragedy.

I’m thankful to Ruta Sepetys for writing SALT TO THE SEA. I always enjoy historical fiction that introduces me to something I didn’t know before, which she certainly does. But more than that, the author has such a deft, confident hand that I could sense the amount of research she did and the respect she has for the survivors and victims of the Wilhelm Gustloff. Sepetys doesn’t overwhelm you with her knowledge, but inserts it subtly, weaving it into the backstories, thoughts, and actions of the characters.

SALT TO THE SEA is told through the eyes of four characters. Joana is Lithuanian, a nurse who always wants to help people in need, even if helping them might place herself in danger. Florian is Prussian, a boy with a pack of secrets. Emilia is Polish, a girl on the run from unspeakable horrors. Alfred is German, a member of the Kriegsmarine, and loyal to Hitler’s every thought. By using characters of different nationalities and loyalties, the author is able to show the many sides of Operation Hannibal, when Germany evacuated soldiers and citizens ahead of the Red Army.

The “chapters” in the book are short, often 2-3 pages before hopping to another character. For the first few chapters, this bugged me a bit, as I couldn’t get to know anyone with such short chapters. Then I got used to it and liked the short chapters, because the sparseness was more impactful than overloading me with details would have been.

SALT TO THE SEA is one of those rare books that I’ll be thinking about for a while.

Prose like a Poet

I was drawn to this book because of the interesting title, "Salt to the Sea". A poetic phrase. I was not disappointed. The author uses language beautifully. Let me stress that. Gorgeous prose. Gorgeous. I was pleased, pleased, pleased to discover this particular author. Another Ursula LeGuin? From the first page I knew I was not only in the hands of a real craftsman but also an author with je ne sais quoi. Sepetys is an author who handles language as fluidly and masterfully as a five star chef creating brioche from scratch. Or, maybe rose petal jelly? Delicious.

The structure was a little jarring, but once I got used to it, I decided it gave the whole work a theatrical flavor, as if I were reading a play. I also appreciated the maps, the bibliography at the end and the list of interviews she did with real eyewitnesses.

The subject matter is a bit intense for YA (and thus must be handled with extra sensitivity) and Sepetys did not hold back in her descriptions of the horrors of war. Was it sensitively done? Yes. Did the blunt violence add to the story? Not sure. Did it reveal the fragility of the human condition? Yes. Did the work overall encourage compassion, bravery, love of fellow man? Not on the scale of Dostoyevsky or Hugo - but the author is young still, and I believe she has great ability to inspire empathy.

I am withholding one star for the following reasons:

It could have been more tightly edited - especially in the first ten pages when the characters were being introduced. Having the same moments repeated from the viewpoints of each character was boring especially since the new information was intuitive for the reader to begin with. I felt like I was being hit over the head with the author's hammer. I wanted to scream "Get on with it!" Tell me the story.

The character of Alfred was also heavy handed and stereotypical - flat and one-dimensional. Nothing there to keep the reader guessing.

The ending was wobbly and the final impact was lost in the disjointed story line. Readers want the resolving clinch. They don't want the beginning of another story, explanations, another character introduced, more information to follow... they want a soppy, wet, unmistakable clinch - the forever and ever kind. The kind that leaves an afterglow.

Other than that... bellissimo! I so, so appreciated this work. I'm a tough grader and I rarely write reviews. This is one more gauge of Sepetys' ability to inspire.

I look forward to watching Sepetys add depth and finesse to her immense potential. I can't wait for the next thing she writes!

Highly, Highly Recommended

Ruta Sepetys is one of the finest writers, young adult or otherwise, writing today. Her two previous novels, Between Shades of Gray and Out of the Easy, held me enthralled through every page. Now comes Salt to the Sea, and it is everything and more that the others are. But a word to the wise up front...have tissues close by.

There are four points of view telling the story of Salt to the Sea, and each is distinctive, secretive, and profound. We have Emilia, a young Polish girl of fifteen who has faced untold horrors of World War II, and is saved early on by the "knight", Florian. Florian has a major secret of his own; he is carrying something very valuable and is trying to get away to safety while simultaneously exacting revenge on those with whom he worked. Distracting Florian, however, is the young nurse, Joana, a Lithuanian who is leading a rag tag group to the safety of a ship leaving Germany now that Hitler has deemed it all right in the final months of the war. Finally, there is Alfred, a young sailor in the German navy who "writes" letters in his head to his love, Hannelore, while avoiding work and planning a dazzling future.

Though these are the voices we hear, there are so many others involved and each one will wrap themselves around your heart, in particular the Shoe Poet and the Wandering Boy who are assisted in getting on the liner Wilhelm Gustloff along with the others. They are stunning examples of man's inhumanity to man and yet the power of hope and the determination to survive. Sepetys gives them lives that represent so many more who experienced as much trauma or even worse.

So much happens that you will find yourself wanting to totally inhale this story, but make yourself slow down and feel the ache of hunger, the biting cold, the long walks, the deceptions and the triumphs. Sepetys has done her research meticulously and it shows in every word. I cannot rate this one highly enough and I urge you to read it and remember it.

Keith Olsen is a CIW Certified Instructor who trains CIW candidates at PBSC, an IBM-owned training company in Canada. He also holds MCT, MCSE, CNI, and CNE credentials and provides Microsoft and Novell certification training.

Don Loughran is a full-time technical instructor with Polar Bear Corporate Education Solutions and has been working in the microcomputer industry since 1980. His many certifications include CIW Certified Instructor, CNE and CNI, MCSE, MCSD, MCT, Sun Certified Java Programmer, and A+.

This book covers the old Foundations exam, retired in 2005. The new exam has many topics not covered by this book, including XML, XHTML, IT job roles, and project management concepts. The test engine is similarly outdated. If you plan on getting certified, look for newer books based on the CIW v5 Foundations Exam 1D0-510.

It worked!

Just yesterday I took the CIW Foundations exam (1D0-410) and passed! It was due entirely to the use of this book. I found the layout, design and content to be VERY good. It is quite easy to read and follows the exam objectives very closely.
The accompanying CD-ROM is chock full of materials and the practice exams were very helpful in my preparation.
The only problem is that there are quite a few typographical errors throughout the book -- hence the 4 out of 5 rating. I found this especially frustrating in the HTML codes where accuracy is THE most important factor. Looking back I guess this was good because I was able to spot the errors which meant I had learned what was right and what was wrong. Some of the practice exam questions at the end of each chapter were wrong as well as far as the letters from the multiple choice question did not match the letters in the answer key. In other words, the letter was wrong in the answer key, but the subsequent description as correct. This seems to be due to the editing process.
I had also purchase another exam preparation book for the same course and it was not nearly as good as this one.
There were only one or two questions on the exam that were not covered in the book. Due to the fact the exam is multiple choice, however, I was able to eliminate some of the answers due to the knowledge I gained from studying with this book.
In all, this seems to be the best preparation book that I have found. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone studying for the CIW foundations exam.

Where was this book when I took the exam...

I took the CIW Foundations exam over a year ago, I had almost nothing to study from and passing the exam was quite the challenge. Had I had this book I am confident that the exam would have been less trouble and made my life easier.

The 860 page book tackles the 1D0-410 Foundations exam and after reading through it I found that it was tailored made for the exam, objective by objective. Detailed information is given and if you use this book I also found that you have enough information to pass the iNet+ exam from CompTia.

In part 1 the author takes on the internet fundamentals with topics like browsers, search engines, plug-ins, security and e-commerce. Part 2 is dedicated to HTML both in the basic and some advanced techniques.

The HTML covers versions 4 and 5 and the breakdown is in a step-by-step format with actual coding examples to work with. Also basic coverage of CSS, DHTML and XML has been broken down into a understandable but technical manner.

Part 3 is the networking fundamentals sections, with topics ranging from TCP/IP, OSI model, servers, security and disaster recovery to LANS, WANS and hardware and troubleshooting.

Each chapter has exercises, questions, and labs to re-enforce the concepts and you can read and reread as often as necessary. There are also hundreds of resources included with every section.

Finally there is a cdrom include with several network tools like Visual Route, but what I found most important was the practice tests include was from Boson, a highly respected name in testing software. Overall this is by far the best book I have seen on the subject matter to date.

About the Author
Bandhu Dunham began teaching himself the art of lampworking in 1975. Since then, he has taught others at facilities worldwide, including The Studio Corning Museum of Glass, Niijima Glass Art Center, Red Deer College, Penland School of Crafts and Pilchuck School. In between Bandhu's production and teaching schedules, he is working on Volume III for Contempory Glassworking.

Good skill building books

This is a two book set of volume I and II of Bandhu Scott Dunham's series on Contemporary Lampworking. Taken together these two books and the following book, Volume III make up a series which is the lampworking equivalent to Oppi Untracht's "Jewelry: Concepts And Technology", i.e. a definitive survey on the subject. I think a good first book for people just learning recreational lampworking is Cindy Jenkins' "Making Glass Beads", which may give the novice a bit more of the romance of it in a more enthusiastic manner. These books should definitely be the next two on the reading list for the serious lampworking student.

Dunham presents a series of topics which show the reader the basics of how to do lampworking, starting with very simple ways to heat glass, add colored stringers and progressing right on up to very complex ways of making complex objects, such as laboratory glassware and large sculptures. Book I is the basics and book II is not just a step up toward more advanced techniques, but a step describing advanced tooling. Initially I wished for more information about specifics of tools themselves, but then I realized that lampworking is not a thing which is bound by any specific technology, but rather by skill of the worker and the properties and chemistry of the glass.

For me, one single technique, the proper winding of a steel wool vessel core, paid for the books. Perhaps for another reader it would be the hint to use a borosilicate punty when making Effetre marbles or the proper way to place a dot or any one of the thousands of other simple things we learned wrong when we start out with lampworking.

The language is fairly simple if you've done basic lampworking and read previous lampworking books and have a basic knowledge of both art glass and lab glassware. One word should do for an example. It is found in a technique which tells about the use of a "rubber policeman" to temporarily stop up a hole at the cold end of a piece of glassware. Anyone who has worked in labs knows what are rubber policemen, but people who come to lampworking from the world of video games and t.v. shows probably should keep in mind that their browser can link to dictionaries.

Some of the reviewers seem to be put off by the black and white photos. I don't believe I would have told that, since it betrays a certain level of inexperience on the subject. Lampworking has two photographic facts of life. Number one is that color photography is not adequate to capture the color spectrum of hot glass. Number two is that hot glass in a flame produces a flare or false color reaction which makes unfiltered color photographs a mess of yellow and throws off the color of filtered ones.

Other readers seem put off by the fact that a lot of the techniques are more directly applicable to borosilicate than to COE 104. I'm not at the level where I can actually do boro with any confidence but I've achieved a level where I can see that the distinction is a false one. The techniques build on one another. If you can keep Effetre cooler but warm enough to work on just a spot without cracking the rest it makes you a better borosilicate worker and if you can work on the stiffer borosilicate it helps you cut down overheating your Effetre. Et cetera.

A minor irritant is that these books are spiral bound, which would make these books difficult for a precocious young reader to handle. However any adult who has sufficient manual dexterity for basic lampworking should be able to read them without tearing pages.

A Must Read for Lampworkers

I found this book to be fantastic. Despite my only working in soft glass, I love that it talks about Boro as well. I had an instructor tell me it didn't apply to soft glass work and I shouldn't buy it... I am so glad I make decisions for myself! The history told is very informative, the tips and tricks throughout the book make it worth every penny. I was most interested in learning the chemistry behind the glass because once you understand that, so many other things come into place. Even on the descriptions that don't direct relate to what I do, I learned something. I love the author's sense of humor- it makes the book an easy and delightful read. So many books are simply "how-to's" these days and don't explain the "whys". Thank you for writing this book and explaining the "whys" in a way everyone can understand! I have now purchased volumes 2 and 3 and am excited to read them. A must have for any lampworker's library.

STEVEN SEBRINGis an award-winning photographer, filmmaker, and multimedia artist known for his distinctive style that merges raw realism with high-end fashion. His distinguished celebrity and rock and roll portraiture include images of Patti Smith, Neil Young, Joey Ramone, Alec Baldwin, Phillip Glass, John F. Kennedy Jr., and Bill Gates just to name a few which have been published internationally in Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, and ELLE. For the past two decades, Sebring has photographed and directed international campaigns for brands as diverse as Estee Lauder, MAC, Joe Fresh, Reed Krakoff, Ralph Lauren, Maybelline, DKNY, and Coach.

In 1995, Sebring's distinguished celebrity and rock'n'roll portraiture led to a meeting with the legendary Patti Smith, resulting in their 11-year documentary and Sebring's directorial debut, Dream of Life. The film won a 2008 Sundance Award of Excellence in Cinematography and earned a 2010 Primetime Emmy nomination. Nice content, very frustrating book

I want to give this book five stars, as it is very interesting, but the fact that every other page is stuck to the one before it, which requires you to peel the pages apart (not an easy task), makes me angry. I paid a lot of money for this book, and I don't know if I am going to keep it, because I don't think I want to devote an entire day of my life to making it readable. Whoever is responsible for the production of this book--the person who approved the ultra thin stick-together pages--needs to spend the rest of his or her life peeling apart all the books before they are shipped to consumers.

I guess if you don't want to take time off from work to make this book readable, you can simply give up and call it "500 Poses by Coco Rocha," because that's all you can see without a whole lot of effort.

For a very specific audience and lousy production quality mars the overall experience.

[[VIDEOID:5e8d23d6e20c76bd7fa3435ad465f0f]]Coco Rocha, if you don't know, is a Canadian model. Together with photographer Steven Sebring, they have produced a book of 1,000 poses.

The premise is interesting enough for me to get it. 1,000 poses! They could be good for reference. But there's a big caveat.

Let's talk about the book's physical aspect first. It's a 2032-page hardcover about 7 by 9 inches. It's very thick and heavy. Edges of the pages are printed black.

Majority of the pages stick together. By the time I peel off the pages from each other, reaching about hundred over pages, I was quite tired, at two hundred pages, I was irritated, and at three hundred pages I was reflecting on the production value of this book. Yes, you'll have a lot of time to think about things while peeling the pages. Those people who say this is a good book may not have peeled more pages than me yet.

And because the pages are so thin, it's easy to crease them when peeling them apart.

Production quality of the book is quite bad. For the price of the book, it's very bad. I should also note that publisher Harper Design is known for publishing illustrated books such as the The Hobbit film companions, 532-page Harry Potter Page to Screen and 464-page The Art of Film Magic which are all quality production. It's quite shocking to see a book of this production quality from them.

The binding is also questionable. The book uses stitch binding, thank goodness. However, the piece of cloth that sticks to the stitched binding does not seem to use particularly strong adhesive. I picked up the book the wrong way by holding the spine side and the pages pulled down causing the cloth to detach from the stitched binding. Not good. I've since pushed the cloth back to make it stick again and it looks alright for the time being. Having said that, for a book this thick you would expect to open it flat, and I've a feeling that the cloth will come off in the future (again for my case).

Alright, now about the content.

From a photography standpoint the photos look good enough, for me. Photos of Rocha are against black background. The lighting is nice. The form of the body is easily discernible except in a few occasions where the shadow side blends into the background like those chiaroscuro paintings of old masters. Half the number of pages are actually for the photos while the other half are white printed with the page number. The book could have easily been half the size if they chose to print the page number in white against the black background of the photos, and that would not have compromised anything artistically.

If you thought fashion poses are outrageous in real life, there are even more extreme so here. I meant that in a good and bad way. The good is there's a huge variety of poses to check out. The bad, depending on what you have been expecting, is most poses aren't from real life or anything resembling how you would pose in real life. The poses here are not those you see in typical fashion magazines. They are more expressive and exaggerated. Out of the 1,000 poses, there are probably less than 10 poses from real life. Out of those 10, most are sports poses. There many poses of her doing some uncommon version of bending, jumping, sitting and standing. I'm actually quite impressed by how many non-real life poses there are. Rocha really is "The Queen of Pose", but whether you can use those poses is a different matter. I see this book as an artistic project rather than a reference book that's meant to be helpful.

There aren't any poses where I think any artist, model or photographer would replicate for their own project. But that's just my opinion.

Another downside is that the poses are not grouped or categorised in any manner. So you can't find poses relating to criteria such as standing, squatting, twisting torso, hand raise, etc. And because they are not categorised, the page numbers are sort of useless on hindsight, which also means half the book is wasted to print them.

In the preface of the book, it was mentioned 100 cameras were used to photograph Rocha in different angles. I suppose there might be a tablet application coming soon to show all those poses. And indeed on Sebring's website, there's a mockup of the app showing one pose that you can turn around in 360. Perhaps that application will be a more worthwhile purchase because you really don't want to deal with the sticky pages of this book.

Pose number 1,000 is quite apt at describing how I feel at the end of the book. It shows Rocha clearly distressed and trying to tear her hair out. I wonder if there's a hidden joke somewhere.

This book is really marred by the lousy production quality and ultimately, whether the content will appeal to you will depend on your expectations.

Depends on what you expected!

I really love Coco and admire her greatly, and she has done a fantastic job in the making of this book with Steven. Like the other reviewers said, the pages are thin and I fear ripping them because they are stuck together. But aside from all that, by content, this is what I think of the book.

I find this book to be a fantastic work of art, but I feel like it is a lot more of capturing dance poses than the study of pose/posing as a model. The poses she has are hardly those you see in editorial prints or lifestyle prints. A lot of the poses really look like dancing or acting poses. She has goofy expressions in a lot of them and very dynamic movement poses, or storytelling poses. I haven't looked through all 1,000 poses yet but it is a lot more artistic moment-capturing in style than I expected, which was really being able to study posing coming from such a successful high-fashion model. 1,000 poses is a challenge and I greatly respect and admire the work Coco and Steven put into making this book, but I guess I wasn't expecting it to be so dancer-like. To shoot 1,000 print and editorial looks would be a serioussss challenge though. She is also wearing the same outfit in the whole book and the photography look is the same - like the one on the edge spine of the book - which I suppose makes sense given the "challenge," but makes it even more of an acting/dancing "poses" book to me. Also, because her style of posing in general involves a lot of movement, it's really hard to "study," in my opinion. It's a great show-off work of art between Coco and Steven though, truly incredible collaboration.
