There's no doubt about it.  As long as we live on this side of heaven we will face conflict, and be susceptible to anger, broken relationships, rejection, and manipulation.
Perhaps there have been times you've felt stuck in bitterness, discouragement or cynicism.  Maybe you've asked "How can I forgive when I hurt as badly as I do?"or you've had moments when you thought you'd truly forgiven, only to have anger return.  You may have been taught that anger is bad, that Christians can't be angry or that nothing good ever results from anger.
From the authors who brought you the bestseller The Anger Workbook, Dr. Les Carter and Frank Minirth of The Minirth Clinic use the same tried and true methods to help you truly forgive those who've wronged you.  This workbook will teach you how to increase your ability to forgive by:

  • learning to establish appropriate boundaries
  • achieving a balance between forgiveness and healthy anger
  • correctly managing and communicating your anger
  • forgiving for the right reasons
The workbook format allows you to personalize the information and develop a plan that will lead to real results.  This new 12-step plan will guide you through elements that are crucial to forgiveness and healing.
The choice is yours:  debilitating anger or forgiveness that frees you to expend your energy on emotionally healthy goals and more satisfying pursuits, such as love, respect, confidence, and servitude.  Choose forgiveness and start on the path toward a life of abundance.

Finally...

I have been reading counseling books on forgiveness, and there are many good ones. However, this is the first one that left me with no questions. Everything has been covered so beautifully. I am using it in my personal life but also plan to use it in counseling others.

Self-introspection is KEY to forgiveness process
By TZ-G
This book is different than other books I've read in my quest to figure out how to forgive my husband after he was arrested. The questions are designed to make you look inside yourself for reasons to forgive that will help YOU as opposed to society's view that forgiveness is "right" and "honorable". This book has been a key component of my forgiveness process and I am grateful that I found it.

Umami: Unlocking the Secrets of the Fifth Taste (Arts and Traditions of the Table: Perspectives on Culinary History), by Ole Mouritsen, Kl

In the West, we have identified only four basic tastes―sour, sweet, salty, and bitter―that, through skillful combination and technique, create delicious foods. Yet in many parts of East Asia over the past century, an additional flavor has entered the culinary lexicon: umami, a fifth taste impression that is savory, complex, and wholly distinct.

Combining culinary history with recent research into the chemistry, preparation, nutrition, and culture of food, Mouritsen and Styrbæk encapsulate what we know to date about the concept of umami, from ancient times to today. Umami can be found in soup stocks, meat dishes, air-dried ham, shellfish, aged cheeses, mushrooms, and ripe tomatoes, and it can enhance other taste substances to produce a transformative gustatory experience. Researchers have also discovered which substances in foodstuffs bring out umami, a breakthrough that allows any casual cook to prepare delicious and more nutritious meals with less fat, salt, and sugar. The implications of harnessing umami are both sensuous and social, enabling us to become more intimate with the subtleties of human taste while making better food choices for ourselves and our families.

This volume, the product of an ongoing collaboration between a chef and a scientist, won the Danish national Mad+Medier-Prisen (Food and Media Award) in the category of academic food communication.

Review
The book is written in a very engaging manner, easily moving between vignettes of the latest science and mouth-watering menus and photographs. (Gordon Shepherd, Yale University, author of Neurogastronomy)

Mouritsen and Styrbæk demystify and explain in layman's terms the science of umami, including many Japanese elements that have not been explained in English before in this all-encompassing book. Along with Mouritsen's other publications Sushi and Seaweeds, Umami will be referred to time and time again. (Yukari Sakamoto, author of Food Sake Tokyo)

A remarkably comprehensive account of umami taste and one in which the science is not only accurate but accessible and interesting. (John Prescott, author of Taste Matters: Why We Like the Foods We Do)

In his earlier books Sushi and Seaweeds, Ole Mouritsen wove together biological, chemical, and gastronomical perspectives into rich portraits of these intriguing foods. In Umami, writing with the chef Klavs Styrbæk, he does the same for this much celebrated yet enigmatic 'new' taste. Umami is a wide-ranging and welcome progress report on our understanding of taste and deliciousness. (Harold McGee, author of On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen)

This book will be your go-to umami resource. The content is cleverly layered with molecular-level explanations of how we taste alongside rich cultural perspective and beautiful recipes. With its stunning graphics, this book is eye candy. (Amy Rowat, founder of Science & Food)

Biophysicist Ole Mouritsen... seamlessly meshes science and gastronomy... (Nature)

This book, representing the fruits of a longstanding collaboration between the scientist Ole G. Mouritsen and the Danish chef Klavs Styrbaek, is richly illustrated and packed with umami-rich recipes to try at home. It should be required reading for those catering for the airlines, since umami is one of the only tatste that holds up well in the air. (Times Literary Supplement)

An engaging read... Umami is at once a scientific treatise, cultural history, unique collection of recipes, and handsome coffee-table--or for that matter, kitchen-table--book. (Sandra J. Ackerman American Scientist)

About the Author
Ole G. Mouritsen is a distinguished scientist and professor of biophysics at the University of Southern Denmark. His books include Sushi: Food for the Eye, the Body, and the Soul and Seaweeds: Edible, Available, and Sustainable.

The recipes look like a fine addition to my collection and the photographs are excellent. Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of September 2015: If you’re searching for an obtuse, synapse-dulling book on DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and its mission to create breakthrough military technologies, look elsewhere. Jacobsen’s nimble account of the ultra-secret R&D arm of the Defense Department engagingly details the shrouded history of the organization, starting with its genesis during the nuclear arms race and covering its efforts up through today. In her final section, Jacobsen offers solid but chilling conjectures on what covert programs DARPA is focused on now. Jacobsen (a journalist and the author of Operation Paperclip and Area 51) strikes a balance between lauding the technology leaps driven by DARPA and pointing out that the ultimate goal is to create wartime tools to guarantee U.S. dominance. DARPA’s successes include lighter machine guns (developed for slighter-bodied soldiers during the Vietnamese war and now standard U.S. issue), the Internet, GPS, and drones. Says Jacobsen, “DARPA creates, DARPA dominates, and when sent to the battlefield, DARPA destroys.” But, Jacobsen also asks, “what if some of these ‘dramatic new capabilities’ are not such a great idea?”

Hawks will find plenty of meat in here to fuel their arguments for the value of top-secret U.S. military programs. At the same time, doves will be well bolstered to pose uncomfortable questions about the worthiness of such activities in a free country. Thoughtful and nuanced, The Pentagon’s Brain will ask you to use your brain as well.--Adrian Liang

"A brilliantly researched account of a small but powerful secret government agency whose military research profoundly affects world affairs."―The Pulitzer Prize Committee

"Filled with the intrigue and high stakes of a spy novel, Jacobsen's history of DARPA is as much a fascinating testament to human ingenuity as it is a paean to endless industrial warfare and the bureaucracy of the military-industrial complex."―Kirkus Reviews

"A fascinating and unsettling portrait of the secretive U.S. government agency....Jacobsen walks a fine line in telling the story of the agency and its innovations without coming across as a cheerleader or a critic, or letting the narrative devolve into a salacious tell-all. Jacobsen's ability to objectively tell the story of DARPA, not to mention its murky past, is truly remarkable, making for a terrifically well-crafted treatise on the agency most Americans know next to nothing about."
―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Jacobsen offers a definitive history of the clandestine agency.... She explores the implications of DARPA work on technology that will not be widely known to the public for generations but will certainly impact national security and concepts of war."―Vanessa Bush, Booklist (starred review)

"Jacobsen's account will serve as the model for histories of military research and development and is likely to lead to more works and articles about DARPA.... Engrossing, conversation-starting read..."―Library Journal

"Annie Jacobsen's considerable talents as an investigative journalist prove indispensable in uncovering the remarkable history of one of America's most powerful and clandestine military research agencies. And she is a great storyteller, making the tantalizing tale of The Pentagon's Brain -- from the depths of the Cold War to present day -- come alive on every page."―Gerald Posner, author of God's Bankers

"A fascinating and sometimes uneasy exploration of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency...."―Dina Temple-Raston, The Washington Post

"In this fascinating and terrifying account, Annie Jacobsen regales us with the stories behind the agency's 'consequential and sometimes Orwellian' innovations, including autonomous weapons systems--killer robots that could decide, without human intervention, who lives and who dies."―Bryan Schatz, Mother Jones

"Annie Jacobsen has a gift for unearthing secret, long-buried information."―Mary Ann Gwinn, Seattle Times

"An exciting read that asks an important question: what is the risk of allowing lethal technologies to be developed in secret?"―Ann Finkbeiner, Nature

"The Pentagon's Brain puts Jacobsen in the company of important writers ... such as Shane Harris and Rajiv Chandrasekran."―Chris Bray, Bookforum

A brilliant and much-needed example of investigative journalism
By Mal Warwick
If you’re familiar with the history of the computer industry, you’re no doubt aware that the Internet was conceived and developed by a U.S. Government agency called DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).

Chances are that you don’t know that DARPA also invented drones both big and tiny, Agent Orange, the M16 Assault Rifle, sophisticated sensor technology, the F117A stealth fighter jet, MIRVs (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles) that carry nuclear weapons, the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System, robotic soldiers — and a slew of other military weapons systems, most of them still top secret.

Remember Total Information Awareness, the predecessor to the massive data collection programs of the NSA that Edward Snowden revealed? DARPA was responsible for that one, too. The agency’s work also gave birth to less lethal technologies, including “real-time video processing, noise reduction, image enhancement, and data compression.” It’s difficult to exaggerate the impact of this little-known agency.

All this comes to light in the pages of journalist Annie Jacobsen’s The Pentagon’s Brain, the first full-length study of America’s secretive military research agency.
DARPA’s mission

DARPA was created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower over the strenuous objections of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and just about everyone else in the military establishment. “Its mission is to create revolutions in military science and to maintain technological dominance over the rest of the world.” No doubt there are many in the military and in conservative circles who are thrilled at how successful the agency has been in fulfilling its mission, their original unhappiness notwithstanding. The rest of us should be scared. Very scared.

With its origins in the debates over the use of the hydrogen bomb and the policy of Mutual Assured Destruction in the 1950s, DARPA’s R&D programs have consistently been found on the far frontiers of military science. Among its least savory efforts (among a great many) were a project in 1958 to shield the United States from Soviet attack by exploding nuclear weapons in the upper atmosphere and the use of the herbicide Agent Orange to defoliate the South Vietnamese forests sheltering Vietcong troops. DARPA scientists actually did detonate nuclear weapons in the atmosphere — and you know the story of Agent Orange.
Unpleasant surprises

The Pentagon’s Brain was the product of exhaustive research. Much of the book is based on formerly classified materials that have only lately come to light. Author Annie Jacobsen turned up startling new information in the course of her research. For example, she learned that the world came even closer to Armageddon during the Cuban Missile Crisis than anyone outside top government and military circles was aware: “four nuclear weapons were detonated in space” during those tense days, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union stood on the brink of total nuclear war. (Two of those were the aforementioned bombs sired by DARPA.)

Though born in the grimmest days of the Cold War, DARPA’s work for more than a decade focused on the war in Vietnam. (The agency was originally called just ARPA until Congress got into the act.) That conflict led to the development of the M16 rifle and many other, less celebrated weapons of war. But much of the work involved the social sciences, subcontracted to the RAND Corporation, a name that will be familiar to anyone who lived through those times. ARPA contractors working for RAND helped to justify the notorious Strategic Hamlets program in which South Vietnamese peasants were forcibly removed from their villages and their lands and moved into heavily guarded new settlements. In fairness, the first round of ARPA social scientists found that the Strategic Hamlets were alienating peasants, but their findings were simply rejected by Pentagon leaders and more amenable researchers hired. Similarly, “the agency did not want to hear that the Vietcong could not be defeated. [Administrators] took the position that [the social scientists] had gone off the rails.”
The electronic battlefield

The high profile of many DARPA inventions notwithstanding, what may be its most significant creation was a “system of systems” that is known today as the electronic battlefield. Jacobsen calls it “the most revolutionary piece of military technology of the twentieth century, after the hydrogen bomb.” This concept encompasses the use of remotely piloted attack drones and technology that enhances the ability of individual soldiers. Ultimately, DARPA research is expected to extend the concept into “transhumanism — the notion that man can and will alter the human condition fundamentally by augmenting humans with machines and other means.” One such effort is the DARPA exoskeleton, which bears an uncanny resemblance to The Terminator and Robocop. Another is an effort to “allow future ‘soldiers [to] communicate by thought alone.”

The Pentagon’s Brain is crammed with chilling examples of the brave new world envisioned by DARPA scientists. I would like to think that every member of Congress would read this book — and then take a much more careful look at funding for the Pentagon. Fat chance, eh?
About the author

Annie Jacobsen is the author of three previous nonfiction books about the Pentagon. One relates the story of Operation Paperclip that brought Werner von Braun and other Nazi scientists to the U.S. following World War II. Another is a history of Area 51, which may be the best known and most notorious American military base in existence.

A comprehensive account of the diverse - and sometimes questionable - history of DARPA
By Ashutosh S. Jogalekar
"The Pentagon's Brain" is a comprehensive history of DARPA which puts the activities of the agency since its formation in the 1950s in perspective. The volume starts by describing the founding of the agency as a response to the scientific and technological threat posed by the Soviet Union and describes the political maneuvering involved in making the organization as independent as possible.

The book takes stock of many of the projects and paradigms DARPA has worked on since the beginning. Not surprisingly, early work focused on nuclear weapons, missile defense, spy satellites and submarine warfare, topics that were all relevant to the Cold War. With time the agency's mandate expanded to cover 'psychological warfare' and more human intelligence-centric projects. The book does a good job portraying the controversial activities of DARPA and its advisors, an elite group of scientists called the JASONS, during the Vietnam war. Later work by the agency was also not without controversy, like its advocacy of the missile defense shield Star Wars and its use of codebreaking that could be used to spy on the country's own citizens. Described too are peaceful inventions which DARPA pioneered such as health interventions on the battlefield, the Internet and the Human Terrain Project developed during the recent Iraq War which was gained at understanding populations in occupied countries; as the book says however, even such more benign endeavors often backfired since the information gained from them could cause resentment among occupied populations.

For me, two aspects of the book were particularly revealing. One was the sharp profiles of leading scientists like Herbert York, John von Neumann, Edward Teller, and Nicholas Christofilos (a remarkable and colorful character; a Greek elevator mechanic who created some of the most brilliant and audacious defense-related ideas in DARPA's history). The second was the accounts of diverse modern technologies that DARPA has contributed to (for obvious reasons, many weapons technologies like directed energy weapons are stated but not discussed). For instance, while drones are commonplace on the battlefield today, their first use was during the Vietnam war. Similarly I was not aware that the AR-15/M16 rife was invented by DARPA scientists. My minor gripe with the book was that it does not delve as much into the science as it could have and seems to contain some errors; for instance Enrico Fermi never told President Truman that the hydrogen bond was an evil thing (he voiced that opinion in an analysis by the General Advisory Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission), and a JASON report on the use of tactical nuclear weapons in Vietnam was not commissioned by Robert McNamara (it was inspired by a careless remark by a high-ranking general at a party).

Nonetheless, "The Pentagon's Brain" is a comprehensive and well-researched account of the myriad varieties of science and technology that DARPA has worked on and how they have affected many modern aspects of our technological existence. And as the narrative concludes, while DARPA has inevitably contributed to peaceful technologies (and these tend to be always emphasized in popular news sources), it should not be forgotten that the principal mandate of the organization remains the development of the weapons of tomorrow. Thus there will always be a moral ambiguity to the work done by DARPA.

An instant classic of investigative research; a definitive history and new standard reference work on DARPA
By Ranger
The Pentagon's Brain is investigative reporter Annie Jacobsen's masterpiece, a brilliant tour-de-force that led to her being a 2016 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History. It is the history of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Pentagon's military and technology think tank that has been helping the US maintain military dominance on the battlefield since the post-WWII glory days of nuclear weapons development. Thoroughly researched, yet eminently readable, Jacobsen writes history with the pacing and character development of a suspense thriller. You won't soon forget the people or the places described in this book (which is the key to compelling history). The subtitle, "An Uncensored History of DARPA, America's Top-Secret Military Research Agency" lives up to the reader's expectations. The truth is, no author has ever tackled DARPA quite like this. Building from research in her previous books as well as her past careers as an LA Times Magazine historical reporter and a PJMedia investigative reporter, Jacobsen covers what is for her familiar ground. She follows it up with impeccable research and then brings together all the seemingly disjointed pieces into a cognitive whole. The effect is a book that is as thorough as it is fascinating. Will better books about DARPA be written in the future? Undoubtedly, but only because future journalists will have Jacobsen to thank for showing them the way. Jacobsen writes with the puritan objectivity that sometimes gets her in trouble with readers and subjects that have strong biases but it works well in this book. Some readers may disagree with some of her conclusions (her battle of Mogadishu assessment misses the mark). But it's nearly impossible for an outsider to thoroughly capture all of the right stuff when researching classified history. And she closes the book with her signature personal appearance in the last chapter. Because after all, good writers not only write history, they sometimes become a part of it. Highly recommended. Especially for those interested in Cold War history, intelligence operations, technology, US government secret programs, government conspiracy, futurism, research and development, military affairs, and scientific innovations. Read this book.

About the Author
Christina Bauer thinks that fantasy books are like bacon: they just make life better. All of which is why she writes romance novels that feature demons, dragons, wizards, witches, elves, elementals, and a bunch of random stuff that she brainstorms while riding the Boston T. Oh, and she includes lots of humor and kick-ass chicks, too. Christina lives in Newton, MA with her husband, son, and semi-insane golden retriever, Ruby.

A magical journey!
By Lilly
I really like this magical fantasy! There's romance, adventure, and lots of magical encounters. This definitely satisfied my cravings for something exciting.

The story first introduces Elea and explains her normal life on her farm. She knows how to use a little bit of magic, but doesn't plan on becoming a powerful Grand Mistress Necromancer. Unfortunately her plans change when a powerful curse is placed on her. A deadly curse that will make her burn eternally.

She has five years to break the curse, and the clock is ticking. On her journey, she meets allies that also want to defeat the man that placed the curse on her. One of them is a powerful young man named Rowan.

Rowan is a caster that also knows magic. He and his group have been waiting for someone like Elea to help them in the fight. He's bold, strong, and knows how to make Elea blush.

I really enjoyed the plot and characters. However, I do wish that this story explained Elea's experience when she was learning how to use her power. The story just skips five years of her life and jumps to the part where she's a powerful necromancer. There were also some areas where the story felt a bit choppy, but I still had a lot of fun reading this, and I can't wait to start the next book.

Great story and brilliant first book of series
By Fiona Leung
Cursed by Christina Bauer is the first book of the Beholder series and it is a brilliantly written fantasy story. Elea is an orphaned Necromancer who has not undergone any training. She has inherited her family's farm and since then many suitors have been knocking on her door. Instead of heeding to the suitors, she's been using her Necromancer magick to scare them off.

Elea's best friend is Tristan who has met a tragic end by being cursed by the powerful Curse from the Tsar. However this Curse has passed onto Tristan's most-loved person who is Elea. Elea has 5 years from Tristan's death to attempt to rid herself of this curse. The only chance she has of doing so is by joining a Cloister to formally train herself in Necromancer magick.

After training in a remote Cloister which isn't taken by the Tsar, Elea has finally achieved the level of Grand Mistress Necromancer. Her mission is now to find the Tsar, kill him and kill the curse thereby freeing herself.

However along the way, she was met with a lot of challenges. She crossed path with a Creation Caster who eventually became an allie of hers. Together they plan to battle the Tsar.

The story of Cursed is very interesting and the world Christina Bauer has built upon is very advanced too. I thoroughly enjoyed this and am starting the next book straight after this!

EXCELLENT START FOR A NEW SERIES....
By Kindle Customer
Excellent start for a new series, with a new author for me. Really got me hooked on a new series and a new author all at once. I luved the storyline, the characters and the writing. Elea and Rowan stole my heart away. Nan, Ada and the other characters did the same. How could you not luv people willing to go to any lengths to protect their people from a tyrant. What waits for Elea if she fails doesn't bear thinking of. Did their bonding ceremony really only bond them one day or will time prove differently? Who knows but I can't wait to find out. The storyline got me involved from the first page. The writing was excellent and no more typos and things missed in editing than most self-published books. I learned long ago to ignore that unless it was gross or made it impossible to follow the story. The characters were believable, engaging and the dialogue fit the time and place it was supposed to. All in all it was an excellent read and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre.

Aldous Huxley's Hands: His Quest for Perception and the Origin and Return of Psychedelic Science, by Allene Symons

Psychedelics, neuroscience, and historical biography come together when a journalist finds a lost photograph of Aldous Huxley and uncovers a hidden side of the celebrated author of Brave New World and The Doors of Perception. Allene Symons had no inkling that Aldous Huxley was once a friend of her father's until the summer of 2001 when she discovered a box of her dad's old photographs. For years in the 1940s and '50s, her father had meticulously photographed human hands in the hope of developing a science of predicting human aptitudes and even mental illness. In the box, along with all the other hand images, was one with the name of Aldous Huxley on the back. How was it possible for two such unlikely people to cross paths--her aircraft-engineer father and the famous author?

This question sparked a journalist's quest to understand what clearly seemed to be a little-known interest of Aldous Huxley. Through interviews, road trips, and family documents, the author reconstructs a time peaking in mid-1950s Los Angeles when Huxley experimented with psychedelic substances, ran afoul of gatekeepers, and advocated responsible use of such hallucinogens to treat mental illness as well as to achieve states of mind called mystical. Because the author's father had studied hundreds of hands, including those of schizophrenics, he was invited into Huxley's research and discussion circle.

This intriguing narrative about the early psychedelic era throws new light on one of the 20th-century's foremost intellectuals, showing that his experiments in consciousness presaged pivotal scientific research underway today.

Review
“Allene Symons has written an intriguing combination of an Aldous Huxley biography, a smart daughter’s memoir of her father, and science—ranging from schizophrenia to paranormal consciousness to psychedelics. Several years ago, while going through boxes in her family’s garage, she found over one thousand photographs of hands, including Aldous Huxley’s, that her father had taken over a two-decade period. What was her aircraft-engineer father trying to discover and how did he cross paths with Huxley? The answers are fascinating and sometimes mind-bending. . . . It’s an absorbing and beguiling read.”

—LISA SEE, author of China Dolls, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, and On Gold Mountain

“What can be said about the work of Aldous Huxley that hasn’t already been told? Quite a bit, it turns out. In this compelling narrative, Allene Symons uncovers a cache of letters between Huxley and the man who turned him on to psychedelic drugs, using those documents to spin a delightful tale of two men exploring the thin line between mysticism and madness. Symons deftly blends the legwork of a journalist with the passion of a daughter fascinated by her own father’s unlikely foray into Huxley’s inner circle.”

—DON LATTIN, author of The Harvard Psychedelic Club and Distilled Spirits

“The psychedelic Sixties didn’t begin in the 1960s. That much is certain after reading Aldous Huxley’s Hands. Allene Symons, an engaging writer and reporter, discovered in 2001 that in the 1950s her father, a photographer, was friends with the writer, philosopher, poet, and satirist whose experiments with hallucinogens opened The Doors of Perception. Symons’s own explorations led to new revelations and insights about Huxley, as well as about her father. Both were ahead of their time, and their work resonates with the world today—and, of course, tomorrow.”

A lively and interesting read - recommended
By Caelisar
This book is not a dry biography of Huxley. Instead, it gives a solid high-level background of his life with a special focus on his time spent living in the Los Angeles area and his mixing with a variety of fascinating people (including the author’s father). The focus on this compelling period in Huxley’s life coupled with the autobiographical snippets from the author really make the book a pleasure to read.

Insights into the unique subculture (1950s intellectual\experimental Los Angeles) are colorful while many notable personalities (Heard, Krishnamurti, Hubbard, Janiger, Smith, Leary, the early LA Vendantists, et. al.) appear throughout the pages. It is fun to watch them weave in and out of the book. The Tuesday night get-togethers at the Huxley household could be a book in themselves. The extensive interactions between Huxley, Osmond and Smythies are documented in a readable and enjoyable manner.

This is a good read for anyone interested in the intellectual and cultural times when investigations into psychedelics were earnestly being made by practicing physicians and psychiatrists, noted men of letters, philosophers of religion, and scientific researchers. It takes place in the days prior to the cultural shifts of the 1960s when recreational usage exploded and research of this type could still be discussed and debated - even in national periodicals. It makes you wonder what would have happened if groups like the Merry Pranksters and the team at Millbrook had been a bit more subdued or erudite in their approach to these powerful tools.

A Little Enlightenment at Your Fingertips . . .
By David W. Betterton
For minutiae lifted from the book, see below review/s. I’ll just say that if you are the kind of reader who hates adding to your list-of-books-to-read when you finish a book; if you hate the 60s drug culture and are turned off by just thinking about things like LSD, mescaline, psilocybin, and a bunch of other psychedelics, and how contemporary research is proving them to be highly effective alleviants in patient studies for PTSD, depression, terminal cancer, addiction, schizophrenia, etc.; if you don’t give a hoot about the interesting neological story behind psychedelics the word; if you are not interested in holding in your hands a magical device that will allow you at the turn of a page to participate in time travel and share in the thinking of some of the greatest minds this world has seen and how Aldous Huxley fits into it all—well, don’t buy Aldous Huxley’s Hands. I am a product of the 60s and I have to admit that during those formative years I did little reading and was a poor reader at best, so now that I find myself in my “advanced years” I am rather picky about how I spend my time and I do not bother reading anything that won’t completely suck me in. I knew about Hands, but just being about Aldous Huxley did not impel me to read it. Then I went to a book signing and after the impassioned presentation Allene Symons gave and finding out that her research had everything to do with a major part of my foggy youth, well, I was hooked. And am I glad that I went to hear her pitch. At about 2 a.m. this morning I put the book down and just sat in the quiet stillness of the wee hours, allowing the euphoria of personal enrichment to wash over me for having just completed Hands. Time well spent. So many places did I travel to; so many interesting people did I meet; so many new things did I learn—not to mention that a big gap in my life, my personal puzzle, had been filled in. I really don’t know how to describe Symons’s work. It’s not a memoir. It’s not a biography. And while she does a splendid job of reconstructing dialogue between Huxley and other notables on a real life stage she constructs for us, it is not fiction. What it is, though, is interesting. Not a boring moment to be found. Without being pedantic, it is chock-full of scholarly factual tidbits, science, history, fascinating personages, and important state-of-the-art information about present day psychological research with psychedelic drugs. Under another pen, Hands could be a most dry piece to handle. The magic here, though, is that, aside from being an intelligent and skillful writer with a sense of humor to boot, Symons has masterfully structured a personal story that weaves her childhood and her father’s lifelong obsession with hands with the lives of Aldous Huxley and a goodly number of his inner circle of famous friends and fellow travelers. That said, you may have noticed that considering the book’s title that I have not mentioned much at all about Huxley. Why? Because Hands is about so much more. He is the focus, sure, but a galaxy of worlds and people orbit him and Symons takes us to each for a historical look-see and then wraps it all up in a nice tight bundle we can walk away with. In essence, she takes us on a spiritual trip sans the drugs. The decade plus it took her to research and write Hands was a mind-expanding adventure, and she takes us right along explaining what’s what every step of the way. You will not regret reading Aldous Huxley’s Hands. But once you have finished it, though, be forewarned that you will be adding at least five or six new books by Huxley et al. to your list-of-things-to-read and printing out several of his essays you can easily find online.

By Julia McMichael
It is difficult to think of a writer who has had a greater impact on modern culture than the writer, Aldous Huxley. Always curious, he explored Vedanta, vegetarianism, psychedelics, hypnosis, Scientology (according to this book), the occult, meditation and eyesight healing. He had a large circle of friends who participated in these explorations. As indicative of his large circle, an aircraft engineer, Howard Thrasher became a Huxley intimate because of their mutual fascination with the human hand.||Thrasher collected photographs of hands to test a hypothesis that the hand would reveal the character or psychosis of an individual. Among Thrasher’s collection was Huxley’s photograph. Thrasher’s daughter, Symons looks at Huxley’s life through the lens of her father’s remembrances of that time. One degree of separation, if you will. There is a great deal of speculation since many of Huxley’s papers were lost in a house fire. It would be of great interest if one were to learn what the cynic Huxley himself thought of this type of book.||The book is successful, however, in painting a picture of a Hollywood where these interests were paramount in the fifties and sixties. Huxley’s books and interests had great influence in developing a la la land culture. If the reader is inclined to love hallucination, this is the book.

We Are All Beautifully Different: An Anti-Bullying Book for Young Children, by Lcswr Jennifer Kempner

"This is a lovely and much needed book that provides an opportunity to open the conversation regarding bullying with our youngest children. In a 'question and brainstorm answers' format, Ms. Kempner's book will enable families to identify specific episodes of bullying that can occur in preschool and elementary school age children. Once identified, the readers are asked to think of alternative ways to handle the situations in which bullying can, but doesn't have to, occur." ―Susan D. Boulware, M.D, Assistant Clinical Professor in Pediatrics, Yale Medical University

This anti-bullying book is designed to teach children to have empathy towards other children that may be perceived as "different." The books helps children realize how painful it is to be teased, isolated or bullied, which hopefully will inspire them to refrain from treating others in this way.

From the author:

We need to come together as parents, professionals and educators to increase the awareness of the "differences" in many of our children today. We need to teach our children tolerance and acceptance of their peers who are so-called "different." As diagnoses of Autism, ADHD and other syndromes and issues are on the rise, we have no choice but to use awareness and understanding to reinforce empathy in our children. Children that are "different" should not be made to feel like outcasts; they need to be understood, not shunned or ignored.

Excellent thought provoking resource!!!
By foneman401
If you have pre school or school aged children, this book is a must read! The book is illustrated and written on a level that is targeted towards kids, so they should have an easy time understanding and emphasizing with the different bullying examples that Ms. Kempner presents. Unfortunately in today's society, our children have probably been impacted one way or another by one or more of the scenarios in this book, or at the very least, have a friend that has. I found the book to be very thought provoking and engaging, and have even questioned myself and how I would react in a couple of the scenarios. Great job by the author and illustrator!

A GIFT
By Mia M.
Having endured childhood bulling, I can say with conviction, it inflicts a wound resistant to healing and leaves an ugly scar. Therapists and loving parents can only "treat" the painful consequences of bullying. This book encourages a "cure" for the source of pain. It is a call to action for parents to build, within their child's character, a sense of tolerance, patience, and kindness towards those who do not easily fit in. So, I applaud both beautiful Maria and Ms. Kempner for the gift of teaching children to respect all that are beautifully different.

A Beautiful Book and Message
By Gerard
Bullying has become an epidemic in our children’s schools, neighborhoods and playgrounds. Ms. Kempner has created a wonderful book that helps parents teach their children, in an age-appropriate way, what bullying is and how they can rise above it. The discussion questions can help guide parents in having the conversation with their children and the tips for parents are equally helpful. It is a “Beautifully Different” book that is beautifully done. Great job Ms. Kempner!
