About the Author

Douglas Fisher, Ph.D., is Professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University and a teacher leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College. He is the recipient of an IRA Celebrate Literacy Award, NCTE’s Farmer Award for Excellence in Writing, as well as a Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Teacher Education.  Doug can be reached at dfisher@mail.sdsu.edu.

Nancy Frey, Ph.D., is Professor of Literacy in the Department of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University. The recipient of the 2008 Early Career Achievement Award from the National Reading Conference, she is also a teacher-leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College and a credentialed special educator, reading specialist, and administrator in California.

Dr. John Hattie has been Professor of Education and Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia, since March 2011. He was previously Professor of Education at the University of Auckland. His research interests are based on applying measurement models to education problems. He is president of the International Test Commission, served as advisor to various Ministers, chaired the NZ performance based research fund, and in the last Queens Birthday awards was made “Order of Merit for New Zealand” for services to education. He is a cricket umpire and coach, enjoys being a Dad to his young men, besotted with his dogs, and moved with his wife as she attained a promotion to Melbourne. Good Book

Good book. Nothing groundbreaking but helpful nonetheless. I have made use of the teacher effect calculation strategy that is in the back of the book. It is interesting to read about the different effect size of each teaching strategy. Useful when talking with staff about what impact different decisions are going to have.

Funniest Book I've Ever Read!

Number one of four in the "Totleigh Towers series," this is perhaps the funniest book I've ever read in my entire life! Buy this book, and then get Wodehouse's The Mating Season (#2 in the series), Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves (#3), and Much Obliged, Jeeves (#4). Your life will never be the same! Be prepared to become addicted to Wodehouse's Jeeves & Wooster books!

Best Wodehouse Book I've read yet!

Like many, I discovered P.G. Wodehouse later in life, and so glad I did. One of the most brilliant humorists of any generation. It's not so much the plot (they're all pretty similar - Bertie in the Jeeves' series or Psmith or the Blanding's Castle cast or his other characters always get into some predicament involving eccentric relatives, on-again, off-again marriage plans, or some other harmless chicanery), but those of us who are devotees never tire of the brilliant repartee, characters, and humorous portrayal of the British landed gentry of the early 20th century. All of the books are enjoyable, some more than others, but I have to say without a doubt that "The Code of the Woosters" is definitely the most laugh-out-loud brilliant humor/writing/reading experience I've had to-date from Wodehouse. Absolutely pitch-perfect. Jeeves is at his finest, Bertie is either oblivious or in deep waters - often both at the same time. The range of characters is spot on - just the right touch throughout. I strongly recommend this book, and guarantee Wodehouse devotees you won't be disappointed!

Witty, soothing, refreshing

A truly enchanting escape into a colorful and peculiar social universe of the iconic British leisure class. As a young man living in a world where it seems every social interaction is marked with the interruption of cell phones or television, I thoroughly enjoyed following the silly social predicaments of Bertie and Jeeves. I'm no doctor but if this isn't good for your blood pressure, I don't know what is.

To Peter Lynch, success in the stock market is pretty basic: if a company's earnings rise, then the stock price goes up. "This simple point--that the price of a stock is directly related to a company's earning power--is often overlooked, even by sophisticated investors," the former Fidelity Magellan manager writes in Learn to Earn, his third book on investing. "This is the starting point for the successful stock picker: find companies that grow their earnings over many years to come."

One of the best managers in the history of mutual funds, Lynch is certainly the person to help people choose the right stocks and understand the market. More so than One Up on Wall Street or Beating the Street, this Lynch book is for beginning investors of all ages. Lynch and coauthor John Rothchild are family men who are worried that teenagers aren't learning enough about the importance of American companies in improving lives and creating wealth. Lynch questions why students are taught that Hamlet was a tragic hero and Napoleon was a great general, but they don't know that Sam Walton founded Wal-Mart. In fact, Lynch's grasp of the past is one of the strengths of the book. One of the best chapters is "A Short History of Capitalism," a witty and homespun look at characters like Karl Marx, the Communist who believed capitalism was doomed, and the robber barons, the shrewd railroad magnates of the late 19th century who amassed huge fortunes by manipulating the markets.

Unlike the robber barons, beginning investors, Lynch says, should stick to the basics: get in the habit of saving and investing and putting aside a certain amount every month; develop a strong stomach because the stock market is going to fall and there's no way to anticipate it; do a little homework so you can understand the reasons to own a particular stock; and buy shares in solid companies and don't let go of them without a good reason.

This book marks Lynch's coming out as a fan of "direct investment programs," which are offered by many good companies. You purchase a couple of shares or so directly from the company and then you enroll in a plan and buy more shares each month, in some cases without paying a penny in fees and always without a broker--the way Lynch likes it. His books include One Up on Wall Street, Beating the Street, and Learn to Earn (all written with John Rothchild).

This book is really easy to read although is very deep and powerfull and I enjoyed a lot. In some of the pages he says something like no matter your condition, race, you can own a share indiscriminately so it was really touching for me. I read a lot of compliments in the reviews asking for something more for the "advanced" investor and that this is so basic for them, and maybe they're looking for some magic complex mathematical formula that will tell them what to do. I was born in the 90s so I do no have much experience on the industry,. I am a beginner and the cover of the book says beginners guide, maybe is why I enjoyed the book , but sometimes I found that the greatest people tend to tell in the simples ways and common tend to make things complicated. Thank you Peter and you have a really nice tie.

PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS

perfect book for beginners knowing NOTHING. I'm a physical therapist and know nothing about investing. This book helped me learn the basic and the important lessons to learn. Other books teach you how to invest right away. This book studies the whole investing process first and makes you familiar with all the terms necessary in investing.

This book is a great stepping stone. I'm in my early 20's so I am no stranger to a lot of the information presented but I recommend starting your reading here anyways. It helps to slow yourself down and establish a solid foundation for more in-depth reading.

Long ago and far away in the age before technology; parents used to personally advise children on a variety of topics such as how to
build savings and /or amass wealth. This book is now that "app" if you will. Written in a painfully simple format of two page chapters it
explains from the mindset required to the actual steps to take, the process of acquiring money. Simple. All you have to be able to do is
read, remember and act accordingly. The key part being ACT which is a major part of this common sense compendium.
Great gift for the college bound or recent college grads.

Some good ideas, but lacking information

I own a juice and smoothie bar and have a lot of customers who look for new and delicious juice and smoothie specials. I bought this book hoping to get some fresh ideas and combinations. While the author does offer some nice combos, ALL of them are complicated, requiring one to make a tea of some obscure sort, then blend in something else. All of this is total pain. It makes all these offerings seem more like medicine than food.
Another thing-there are NO YIELDS ANYWHERE! So one juice will make 4 ounces, another will make 8-10. I'd expect some variation based on the age of the fruits and veggies but these recipes are all over the place.
It would be useful to have a note attached to each juice recipe with whatever nutritional benefits can be had by drinking it. Such as-cleansing, good for UTIs, full of vitamin C, hearty and filling, packed with anti-oxidants, etc. As published, you have to look up all the different ingredients in the previous chapters to find the nutritional benefits-confusing and a hassle.

"The Juicing Bible" seems to have been written for a very specific audience. If you have a well stocked cupboard filled with spices and a garden filled with herbs then this book might be what you are looking for. After looking through the entire book I found one recipe I could actually make without searching in a health store for uncommon ingredients. The recipe I tried was the "Apple Spice Cocktail." This used ingredients I had in my refrigerator and instead of the spices recommended I just used cinnamon. So in a way I created my own recipe based on a good idea.

Some of the ingredients in this book include: lavender, powdered licorice, dandelions, powdered linden flower, borage leaves, acai berries, red raspberry leaves, stinging nettle, kelp, astragalus root, meadowsweet and apricot milk. While I've heard of these ingredients before I have no idea where to get them. The small sources section at the back of the book doesn't really give me any clues as to who carries which herbs. Most of the spices used in this book can however be found at your local grocery store.

This book is divided into 8 main sections which include:

Healthy Body Systems - A brief discussion of the endocrine system, immune system, musculoskeletal system, nervous system and respiratory system. There is a short discussion of hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle spasms, anxiety, depression, memory loss, asthma and allergies.

Health Conditions - This is a comprehensive section organized alphabetically. It discusses things like cancer prevention, headaches, indigestion and water retention.
Each illness is discussed and remedies are given. The remedies include healing foods and herbs. Healing drinks are listed at the end of each section.

Healthy Foods - This section lists fruits and vegetables in alphabetical order. Each vegetable and fruit has a section with a description, use and buying and storing information. At the end of each section there is a list of juices you can make using the specific fruit or vegetable. For instance under cucumbers it is listed as a diuretic and is a good source of vitamin A.

Fruit and Vegetable Juices - This is the section that includes the basic fruit and vegetable juice recipes. Here you will find simple fruit and vegetable combinations. Some include:

Orange Star - Star fruits, oranges, cantaloupe and lemon
Pear Fennel - Pears, fennel, apples and powdered licorice
Summer Nectar - Nectarines, apricots, blueberries, peaches and plums
Green Magic - celery, cabbages, spinach, pumpkin and powdered ginkgo

Juices for Healthy Bodies - This section is divided up into:

Heart-Healthy Tonics
Aperitifs and Digestives
Bitters
Endocrine Elixirs
Immunity Boosters
Muscle Powers
Nerve Nourishers
Stress Busters

Frozen Treats - If you have an ice cream machine then you will love this section. Some of the interesting combinations include Strawberry-Beet Ice, Lemon Ice, Basil-Pear Sherbet, Fruit Pulp Frozen yogurt (a good way to use up fruit pulp after juicing) and Berry Pops.

To complete the book there is a glossary and a helpful index. While this book is interesting it will take a greater deal of effort to find some of the ingredients. You can of course substitute many ingredients and still have good success with the recipes. I'd recommend this to the very adventurous juicer who loves herbs and spices and is willing to plant unique plants in his/her garden. I've been to many health food stores but I've never found some of the ingredients listed in this book. So many of the recipes require advanced planning. I looked through the book prior to purchasing it so I knew what to expect, but if you've never seen the book, I'll provide a brief review. the book is divided into sections. there is one section which speaks to several ailments (in Alpha order) and tells you what to get more of, what to avoid and has page numbers to recipes good for those ailments. It also goes through fruits, veggies and herbs and how to juice them, pulp them and use them for teas, what to look for when picking your fruits and how to clean them. Then the book goes into recipes, first fruit juices, then veggie juices, smoothies, teas and cocktails. It is a great resource that I use often.

The Only Helpful Book on Grieving I've Found

I found this book 20 years ago when my beautiful daughter was stillborn. Of all of the things offered to me at the time, this was the only thing I read that provided any comfort. I am reading again now when a close friend has taken his own life and left a young, beautiful family behind. Neither event makes any sense to me. Both challenge my faith. You will not find any neat answers, cosmic solutions or expressions of God that will "help you get through it." You will read the journal of a man devastated by his loss. He writes of his grief as he observes it. He articulates the great internal battle that I suffered.

If you are grieving an enormous loss, you may find comfort here. I can't explain why, as C.S. Lewis did not include words of comfort. I have found absolutely no comfort in anything else I have read - with titles like Roses in December and so on. They tend to be written after the author had worked through the grief and can speak of it with the clarity of hindsight that the experience taught them. Well, when you are in the depths of sorrow, nothing makes any sense. Everything you believed has been knocked over. And that is exactly what C.S. Lewis describes in his own grief. It is profound. If you have not suffered a devastating loss, this book might not communicate well to you. But if you have, you will find a great mind and wonderful writer who understands your grief well enough to put words to it.

GREAT!!

GREAT!!! ~~ This helped me a lot. For someone like me, it really made sense. It was written in 1960, so keep that in mind. However, I felt the concepts were relevant and the writing is very beautiful. Whether you are Chrisitan or not, just substitute your beliefs or non-beliefs into the God parts. The spiritual theme is still there. It's not a requirement to believe in God to benefit from this book. Alternatively, it could really help someone who feels lost to find 'something' to believe in-whether it be love, God, whatever. Grief is a major thing. It's really hard, it takes a long time. It really changes your brain and it takes a while to find a path out of it. But, there is hope. Here are a couple of my fave quotes on grief: one from this book, one from another author...

Extraordinary Exploration of Love and Loss

Best known for his "Chronicles of Narnia" and a long list of fiction and non-fiction Christian apologetics, C. S. Lewis would be the last author I'd have imagined I could stomach. I can barely relate to fantasy, and not at all to religion, but a close friend was in the painful process of losing a great love to Lou Gehrig's disease and had been encouraged to read "A Grief Observed." I wanted to read it to share his pain.

This book is not for the faint of heart. It should probably come with a warning label! Seriously, nothing could have prepared me for such a searing flood of emotion. Being a normal American male, listening to country-western songs is about as close as I usually get to experiencing my feelings. Trust me, if a sad country song is a raindrop, "A Grief Observed" is a deluge.

As happened to my friend, C. S. Lewis found great love in his fifties only to lose her to bone cancer. It's up for grabs whether bone cancer or Lou Gehrig's disease is the greater blight on mankind, but both are devastating to the victims and their loved ones. Being such a devout Christian, Lewis apparently felt he had a handle on it, which ironically made him even less prepared. In any case, after she died he wrote this incredible book. It's as close as one person can get to a glimpse of another person's soul.

Great Overview!

This book provides a straightforward overview of today's most pressing economic issues. From the Fed to minimum wage analysis, and everything in between, the author gives a very practical and applicable explanation to the impact of different fiscal policies and programs. I was very impressed at the unbiased economic analysis of Obamacare--the facts on their own show how this ill-conceived 'reform' will ultimately amplify the very problems it was meant to solve. This book is a great step towards actually educating students instead of indoctrinating with the same old political rhetoric.

Why no Windows 8?

I rented this book via kindle because I joined my class late and needed the book immediately. It was perfect, I got it instantly and it was as easy to use as it was convenient. I was very much a fan.

That is until I had to get a new laptop with Windows 8. I downloaded the kindle app, expecting it to be as easy and convenient as usual, only every time I clicked to open it I got a popup saying this title was "not supported by Windows 8" or that something was wrong with the title and I needed to redownload it.

So far I've tried downloaded multiple kindle apps for my new laptop. (Kindle PC, Kindle Cloud, etc.) and I've looked at the listing to see if redownloading it is possible. (It's not.) No luck thus far and I've been able to find exactly zero trouble shoots or FAQs that are able to help me.

Now I'm out a book for my class (which I still have to pay the duration of the rental fee for) and I'm severely confused as to why the $*&#@! Windows 8 isn't compatible with a simple Kindle book.
