Felix, a Jewish boy in Poland in 1942, is hiding from the Nazis in a Catholic orphanage. The only problem is that he doesn't know anything about the war, and thinks he's only in the orphanage while his parents travel and try to salvage their bookselling business. And when he thinks his parents are in danger, Felix sets off to warn them--straight into the heart of Nazi-occupied Poland. To Felix, everything is a story: Why did he get a whole carrot in his soup? It must be sign that his parents are coming to get him. Why are the Nazis burning books? They must be foreign librarians sent to clean out the orphanage's outdated library. But as Felix's journey gets increasingly dangerous, he begins to see horrors that not even stories can explain.
Despite his grim suroundings, Felix never loses hope. Morris Gleitzman takes a painful subject and expertly turns it into a story filled with love, friendship, and even humor.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6–9—Felix lives in Poland in 1942, and reading is his survival mechanism. Now almost 10, he was sent to a Catholic orphanage three years and eight months earlier by his Jewish bookstore-owning parents, and he's convinced himself that the sole reason he remains in hiding is because Nazis hate books. He's a natural storyteller, and when he finds a full carrot in what is typically a woefully thin bowl of soup, he fantasizes that it's a sign from his parents that they're finally on their way to take him home. When the orphanage is visited by surly Nazis instead of joyous parents, Felix escapes with only his cherished notebook full of his stories into the nearby countryside, still hoping for a family reunion. He soon discovers a burning home with two slain adults in the yard and their young daughter bruised but still alive. He takes Zelda on his journey, shielding her from the reality of her parents' deaths in much the same way he's been comforting himself, by inventing alternative realities. But, as he encounters the escalating ugliness of the death marches that are emptying his old neighborhood, now a ghetto, Felix becomes increasingly conflicted about the need to imagine a hopeful order and the need to confront brutal reality head-on. An easy first-person narrative in terms of reading level—and a good choice as a read-aloud—this Holocaust story also taps gut-punching power by contrasting the way in which children would like to imagine their world with the tragic way that life sometimes unfolds.—Jeffrey Hastings, Highlander Way Middle School, Howell, MI

From Booklist
The horror of the Holocaust is told here through the eyes of a Polish Jewish child, Felix, who loses his innocence as he witnesses Nazi-led roundups, shootings, and deportations. After nearly four years in a kind Catholic orphanage, he runs away to find his parents. First he returns home, where he is chased away by new residents. Then he journeys to the city (that is, the ghetto), gets help from other fugitives, discovers the Nazis’ incomprehensible brutality, and is forced into a train bound for the camps. Through Felix’s traumatized, present-tense viewpoint, readers learn of the genocide, in which books and bodies were burned en masse, as well as one victim at a time, including a baby who is shot dead in its high chair. Most moving is the lack of any idealization. Felix rescues a lost little girl, but rather than idolize him, she fights and fumes: Don’t you know anything? Felix escapes, but one and a half million Jewish children did not, and this gripping novel will make readers want to find out more about them. Grades 7-10. --Hazel Rochman

Review

“Like The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (rev. 9/06), this Holocaust parable plays its main character's naiveté against readers' likely knowledge of the historical realities, but here the juxtaposition is believable and not at all precious; like The Book Thief (rev. 3/06), the novel extols the power of storytelling in the face of tragedy, but Once pits Felix's stories against even deeper ugliness. ... Gleitzman manages to find a grain of hope in the unresolved (and likely dire) conclusion, but this is the rare Holocaust book for young readers that doesn't alleviate its dark themes with a comforting ending.” ―The Horn Book, Starred Review

“This gripping novel will make readers want to find out more” ―Booklist

The comments after were about having understood something of what it was like to live through awful times
By Ern
When I found myself having to choose between Morris Gleitzman books to teach my year seven girls this year, I was not thrilled to have to pick this one because the numbers in the class matched the number of books in the box. Another Holocaust book! I'd done 'Briar Rose' with a recalcitrant year 12 class and 'The Book Thief' with an eager year 10 class. And Gleitzman! I could not imagine how he could do justice to the truth and still be Gleitzman with his quirky irreverent characters. So I was pleasantly surprised to be as enthralled with the book (then the next and the next and the now) as my students were. The horror was there, but my students were not overwhelmed by it. The comments after were about having understood something of what it was like to live through awful times. I will teach it again.

A Must Read for All Classes Covering the Holocaust
By OpheliasOwn
When I was in high school, I went to Germany on a school trip. In Germany, we went to Dachau, a concentration camp that has been turned into a memorial/museum. The emotions I felt at Dachau have never left me. The vast camp was completely silent except for the crunch of visitors' feet on the gravel. The pain within those gates was so strong, we couldn't even speak to one another. But more and more, I find my students are finding themselves disconnected from the Holocaust. Sure, they know the mass murder to millions of people is horrendous, but they really can't fathom the fear and agony felt by so many. We read books, we watch movies, but it is hard to grasp the same emotions I felt the moment I stepped foot into Dachau so many years ago. Therefore, as an educator, it becomes very hard to find quality books that will knock my students around emotionally the same way Night by Elie Wiesel did the first time I read it in high school. Once, by Morris Gleitzman knocked me around, and will certainly open the eyes of any jaded student.

It's 1942, and Felix has lived in a Polish Orphanage for 3 years and 8 months since his parents left him there. They are Jewish and owned a bookstore in town, but they made a deal with Mother Minka to hide Felix, but they told him they were just going to take care of some bookstore business and be back. They still haven't returned. So Felix passes the day writing stories about them saving people and being brave in the outside world. When Felix gets a whole carrot in his soup one day, he decides it is a sign from his parents that they are coming to get him. When Mother Minka sadly tells him it isn't a sign, he decides to leave the orphanage to find them. After watching a group of Nazis come to the orphanage and burn Jewish books, he is worried his parents' books are in danger, and he knows he has to go help.

On his way into town, Felix comes across a lot of puzzling situations. First, he tries to hitch a ride on a cattle truck that is full of people, but a soldier on top of the truck shoots at him. He assumes it must have been a mistake and actually feels bad for the soldier who must be upset he accidentally shot at a little kid. Then he goes to his parents' bookstore, but the books are all gone and a local Christian family is living in his house (and threaten to turn him in to the Nazis). Finally he happens upon a farmhouse in flames and discovers a mother and father shot (and all the chickens) and a young girl who is barely alive. He drags her away from the flames and the car coming back to the scene, saving her from whoever did this.

At first Zelda is upset, but then she is just plain difficult, arguing with everything Felix says. When they get caught by Nazi soldiers and taken to the ghetto, it is her determination not to lose Felix, though, that saves them both. When a Nazi soldier tries to separate them, a large Jewish man offers the soldier something in German and he allows the man to take the kids. Barney, the man, takes Felix and Zelda and hides them with the other children he has saved in the ghetto. It is hear that Felix begins to learn the truth about the Nazis and what they are really doing to the Jews. When the ghetto gets emptied, Barney and the kids have no choices but to be packed into the trains with the other Jews. You might think all was lost at this point, but at some point, Felix's luck has to change!

This was such a beautiful little book (150 pgs). I loved Felix so much I just wanted to gather him up and keep him safe. He is so sweet and innocent and just wants to protect his parents. His naivete about the Holocaust was so scary and endearing at the same time, it broke my heart. But something I think kids might relate to is the fact that he is just a kid. He does kid things like protect kids from bullies in the orphanage and make up wild, fanciful stories. Yet, at the same time, he is stuck in this time period that has been written about, talked about and filmed ever since it ended. I think kids can relate to his childish ideas and that alone makes this story more powerful than others. They can imagine how they might feel if they were in the same situation.

The story is very short and perfect for any middle school student, but its beauty lies within the multiple layers that can be pulled back for a wide age range of people. For a middle school student, this story might be a face-value story about a boy in the Holocaust, but for an older student, this can be a way to quickly examine the plagues of war, such as the loss of life and innocence. It gives them a chance to delve deeper into the consequences of war. This is quite simply a beautiful story and as sad as it made me to read it, it also made me hopeful for Felix and for the growth of the young people I work with each and every day.

Super book for middle school.
By Janice A. Macleod
My 7th graders sat on the edge of their seats when I read this aloud at the end of the year! I used the document camera so they could follow along, and I had a "During Reading" worksheet where after every two chapters they had to write a connection, prediction, summary, or question. It's an endearing story with characters that my students really seem to get involved with and have sympathy and appreciation for what it must have been like to be a child during the Holocaust. I teach a small group class of students with learning disabilities.

Amazon.com Review
Raphaella de Mornay-Malle grew up in the sheltered world of the Mediterranean aristocracy under the careful tutelage of her stern father and her dutiful duennas. Married at age 18 to a much older American, John Henry Phillips, Raphaella fills her life with his wishes and desires. But when John is incapacitated by a series of strokes, she finds her world shrinking to the size of a sickbed.

Though Raphaella has an uncommonly strong sense of her duty in marriage, she can not ignore her attraction for Alexander Hale, a handsome acquaintance. As John's condition worsens and Alex grows insistent that she acknowledge what lies between them, Raphaella faces a classic duty-versus-love dilemma.

Though readers may see the plot twist coming a mile away, Danielle Steel's got her grasp on the pulse of romance fiction, and she's not going to let go without a fight. Groan and giggle, ignore the laundry and make excuses, but make no mistake--you'll enjoy getting swept away by this one.--Nancy R.E. O'Brien

From the Publisher
The only daughter of a European banking dynasty, Raphaella had always been sheltered from the world. Married to a much older American, she was kept in the privacy of great luxury, tended to by servants, watched over by bodyguards. She was the beautiful dark-eyed woman the young lawyer from San Francisco, Alexander Hale, saw sitting alone one misty evening. Before he could approach her, she rushed away into the garden. She was the "perfect stranger" he couldn't forget. When they met again their lives would change forever.

A Perfect Stranger: A Novel
By jellybeanmau
Every time it seems that the previous novel I've read can't be outdone by Danielle Steel it seems as if she's taken it as a personal challenge and she's won, again! This is yet another winner. It has a touching storyline filled with poignant, real, believable characters, both lovable and detestable. This was a quick read, probably because I could hardly put it down. I'm looking very forward to see if I can again be delighted, enthralled, and swept away by another novel by the truly gifted Danielle Steel. Her books have grown as I've grown up, or maybe my taste has refined a little more. Who cares? Either way I'm ready for another. So, next...

Review of Perfect Stranger
By Kindle Customer..Scottie
I was thrilled by Perfect Stranger. I love all of Danielle Steel's books. I have been a fan since she wrote her first book. She is writing faster than I can read. Having my new Kindle Fire helps so I can read everywhere I go! Perfect Stranger had me so afraid that the book would end badly but the author didn't fail me . As usual, she brought it to a delightful end. I loved the little boy watching for the black Porsche everyday.

Vampire lovers Mia and Kurt are on the run from their Forbidden Science rival Gaius Lupus. After narrowly escaping the implosion of Genpath Laboratories, Immortyls Mia Disantini and Kurt Eisen go into hiding in a place they think is safe. All too soon they are discovered, and Kurt is captured by Gaius. When he's rescued with the aid of feral child and teen vampires known as sewer rats, Mia witnesses first-hand the charismatic spell her lover casts over these would-be revolutionaries, who vow to join Kurt in his mission to bring down the house of Gaius. Meeting obstacles to government funding to support the research that will one day allow them to walk in the sun, Kurt builds his forces. Mia navigates the minefield of rat politics, where she is distressed to be shunted into the background; viewed merely as an overly ambitious concubine who stands between the beloved "Loki" and his followers. One in particular-the oddly timid but beautiful Arturo, who threatens to sever the deep bond between Mia and Kurt. Will Kurt and Mia defeat Gaius's brutal attacks and realize their dream of a cure for their condition? Will the new order they establish survive betrayal from within? And...will their love adapt to the challenge of a third partner?

A great sequel
By K.A.S.
Starting off just after we left off in Cara Mia (book one), Mia and Kurt are in hiding having escaped from Genpath Laboratories. We see a return of some characters we met in book one, Mia and Kurt obviously, as well as Gaius and Leisha, and a few more. The war is still going on. Gaius wants to create Weakness-free Imortyls and Mia and Kurt have to work toward stopping Gaius and finding their elusive cure.

While this is all happening, I felt the bulk of the story surrounded the strained relationship between Kurt and Mia. In the previous book there was an utter love and devotion between the two. In this book it seems, that though there is still true love there, the honeymoon phase has definitely ended.

After a fast paced intro, Kurt is captured and taken by Gaius. Mia has to turn to the rats (vagabond street-rat vampires) to rescue him.

During his capture and rescue, Kurt bonds with Arturo, who is very mentally child-like. Once safe, Kurt takes a place as leader of the rats, being dubbed Loki. Arturo stands at his side as mate. On top of being shoved to the side, Mia is treated as if she is no better than a hooker, Kurt's sexual plaything. The rats have absolutely no respect for her. Kurt, by the way still loves Mia just as much as ever, but he cannot leave Arturo which puts serious strain on his relationship with Mia. Think about it, would you agree to share your boyfriend with another man?

Obviously Mia has quite a bit to overcome in this book and it's quite interesting to see her character further develop and deal with these hardships.

This book is very emotional charged and a fast paced read. A great companion and just as enjoyable as her first offering, Cara Mia.

Great Vampire story with a mix of romance and science fiction
By B. Varney
Twilight of the Gods is the second installment of the scientific vampire series, The Immortyl Revolution. It was released this month and continues the story of Kurt and Mia after their escape from Genpath Laboratories. The story begins with Mia and Kurt thinking that they are safe until Gaius captures Kurt.

The story the continues with lots of adventure and action. Mia is the strong vampire in this book but has to deal with being ignored in the new order with the wild teen vampires known as sewer rats. She struggles with her secondary role in this new society because she is used to being strong and independent,

Denise weaves Norse mythology and feminist themes through this book that not only grabs their female readers with a love triangle and the point of view of a female vampire but with a struggle for what she really wants more. Male readers will find the science fiction and battle scenes to their liking.

The vampires, Kurt and Mia continue their search for the cure that in the end may not be exactly what they are looking for.

This book is an excellent read for those who like more action and adventure than just romance.

Fearful Symmetry is the third book in the series and will be coming out soon. Twilight of the Gods is available through Dreamspell and can be purchased at Amazon.com

If you like Denise Verrico and enjoy her books then you can meet her in Lexington, KY on Saturday October 23rd. She will be at the local Halloween event, A Day of Mystical Blood Lust. She will be selling and signing her books as well as leading a panel on Vampires and Science Fiction genre. She will be a great addition to that event and will be available to talk to fans at that time.

Book two is just as good as the first!
By Katrina Michaels
4.5 Stars.

Twilight of the Gods starts off pretty much where the first book, Cara Mia, ended. Mia and Kurt have escaped and are still searching for a cure. However, they soon find that they are being pursued and that their freedom may not last.

An interesting twist is the introduction of a group of young vampires calling themselves rats. Without giving too much away of the plot, there is a twist in the dynamics between the independent Mia and her lover Kurt which pushes their relationship to the limits. Both characters grow and develop, although some of their personality changes are not for the better. It is the emotional development and relationship between Kurt and Mia which makes this book special.

Also, it was very enjoyable to watch Mia's character become mentally and emotionally stronger and continue to fight for her independence. She proves to be an excellent character; not too perfect as many are portrayed, but with realistic faults tempered by her many strengths.

This book is fast-paced, well-written, and a wonderful encompassing read.

By Kristin Isaacson
just what it sounds like, but i wish it would lay out some of the distinct characteristics of the art in the chapters by time-period, I also wish it would have a vocabulary list at the end of the chapter, which vocabulary is not really very full. it is missing terms. I wish it would section off the each chapter under bolded or underlined sections according to painting, and it does not have a lot of paintings in it. it feels more like a shortened version of a bigger book. it doesn't seem to describe or explain the paintings symbols or styles very much, it mostly just explains the context in which the painting was given and the art theory. I really thought that art history was looking at the art in it's context with the composition, yes, but also what was going on in the picture, why some things are the way they are, what philosophy related to what parts of the paintings. Analysis is a big part of any art history class, a part which i thoroughly enjoy, and just some of the history is in there and some descriptions of the paintings, the painters, but not in much detail even. i would rather have a bigger book than not enough detail. This is from a student who has to read the book for class, but i've found i can pass the class just fine without the book.

Thorough and Readable (but expensive)
By Stephanie
This textbook was required by a class and panicked when I saw the prices for buying it. Being able to rent it cut the price to a third and made it affordable. Had I realized the quality of the info and the readability of the text, I might have considered continuing the search for a cheaper used copy to purchase, rather than rent. $60 for a rental is a lot and most textbooks I've found are not worth that. This one would be worth buying for that price (but not the almost $300 a new one goes for). Because mine was used, it did not include the MyArtsLab disk. I could have purchased it for $100, but after discussing it with my professor, decided to take the risk that I might not have access to some info and risk a lower grade. She didn't think it would cost me more than a letter grade. She was right. I was able to use what was in the book to learn the material and write the thorough critiques/comparisons she expected for class.I had to do some small amount of Internet searching for the extra insights needed for some of the assignments, but I was able to easily find what I needed in the book, without the expensive "publisher's content" available with the MyArtsLab purchase. (I made an A!)

Great book
By Jessica Sandoval
Rented this textbook for my art history class in undergrad. The book starts of with basic art terms (called starter kit) which is great if you have no idea what kind of terminology art uses. The book then goes on to give an introduction of art and art history which is also nice. This book had a lot of useful information and really went in depth on each topic. There were also questions at the end of the chapter that you can answer. You can also get the MyArtsLab if you want take a closer look at the artwork (I didn't get it.. It's optional). Overall, It was a great read on the history of art.

Unsettled: Cambodian Refugees in the New York City Hyperghetto (Asian American History & Cultu), by Eric Tang

After surviving the Khmer Rouge genocide, followed by years of confinement to international refugee camps, as many as 10,000 Southeast Asian refugees arrived in the Bronx during the 1980s and ‘90s. Unsettled chronicles the unfinished odyssey of Bronx Cambodians, closely following one woman and her family for several years as they survive yet resist their literal insertion into concentrated Bronx poverty.

Eric Tang tells the harrowing and inspiring stories of these refugees to make sense of how and why the displaced migrants have been resettled in the “hyperghetto.” He argues that refuge is never found, that rescue discourses mask a more profound urban reality characterized by racialized geographic enclosure, economic displacement and unrelenting poverty, and the criminalization of daily life.

Unsettled views the hyperghetto as a site of extreme isolation, punishment, and confinement. The refugees remain captives in late-capitalist urban America. Tang ultimately asks: What does it mean for these Cambodians to resettle into this distinct time and space of slavery’s afterlife?

Review

“Scrupulous, courageous and fiercely argued, Unsettled is an ethnographic revelation. . . . Tang, a former organizer, brings to light the political ecology of a community that has survived war, genocide, and displacement and is now struggling to remake the Bronx hyperghetto, exposing in the process the ‘impossible’ condition that may be the fate of all refugee communities in the neoliberal city.” —Junot Díaz

“Scholar-activist Eric Tang has written a brilliantly moving account of how politics, community dynamics, and family relationships shape life for Cambodian refugees who settled in the Bronx in the 1980s and 1990s. Unsettled is at once a stunning ethnography, a superb critical cultural studies project, and an outstanding example of engaged scholarship that will inspire new understandings about the movement of people and the creation of particular kinds of contested spaces. Tang’s riveting account of struggle, change, and resistance is a remarkable achievement.”—Beth Richie, Professor of African American Studies and Criminology, Law and Justice at University of Illinois at Chicago

“Unsettled is a contribution to the emergent field of ‘critical refugee studies,’ and documents a story of Cambodian refugee itinerancy and survival. Not an account of a transition from refugee hardship to redemptive U.S. citizenship, it is rather a description of uprooting, captivity, poverty, displacement, and fugitivity—and the ever elusive project of ‘arrival.’”—Lisa Lowe, Professor of English and American Studies at Tufts University

I highly recommend this one
By Amazon Customer
Most memoirs and social histories that focus on Cambodia focus on the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge era, but Tang's book provides a new, original perspective by offering an intimate, sympathetic account of Cambodian refugees whose imprisonment has continued in America. I truthfully could not put this book down as it is written in a riveting, accessible style and tells a heartbreaking story of one Cambodian American family's extraordinary resilience. This book could not be more relevant in the context of the current global refugee crisis taking place. Tang's book reveals that there is still so much we don't know or understand about the hardships that refugees and migrants endure, even generations after their arrival. If you read only one book this year, I highly recommend this one.

A far better read id Usha Welaranta's Beyond the Killing Fields
By Pam Withers
Sensitively written and reported, and of interest to those delving into the immigrant/refugee experience, keeping in mind it's very specific to a) Cambodians and b) New York City. A far better read id Usha Welaranta's Beyond the Killing Fields.

An eye-opening account!
By Amazon Customer
This is a well-crafted and beautifully-told story of the travails of a Cambodian woman and her family who came to the U.S. as refugees in the early 1980s. Eric Tang's prose is crisp, direct, and at times poetic. The author makes a number of important contributions, and I will mention three. First, this book is a powerful and long-overdue critique of the fictions of resettlement and of the U.S. refugee programs that often exacerbate the problems of displacement and hinder refugees from rebuilding their lives. Tang demonstrates this through skillful ethnography of the quotidian struggles of Ra Pronh and her family, the subjects of the book, who constantly negotiate and try to find ways to survive the seemingly endless displacements and who deal with daily issues of impoverishment, abandonment, and violence. Second, the book is a wonderful model in how to conduct research with refugees and displaced communities. Tang's care for and ethical engagement with the Cambodian families he worked with show how scholarship and activism can be both productive and empowering for both the researcher and the people and communities one "studies." Third, the book is innovative and bold in making the argument that the experiences of racialization, exploitation, living in enclosures, and abandonment in New York City's poor neighborhoods intersect with the experiences of enslavement, impoverishment, and neglect of African Americans. This is the work of a public intellectual, and this book deepens our understanding of what it means to be displaced and living in precarious situations. As a teacher who has taught this book in my college classes, and as someone who does research in the field of migration and refugee studies, I highly recommend this eye-opening book.

Review
"Within minutes of opening Marc Tedeschi's new book, Hapkido, you know you have your hands on an exceptional work. Hapkido is an enormous, comprehensive, detailed, beautifully illustrated and, somehow, very personal reference work for those who want to learn about this fascinating martial art...an astonishing degree of detail...It covers so much ground and its material is so well presented that no martial arts library will again be complete without it." - Journal of Asian Martial Arts

"If you hold this book in your hand, words will fail you. 1136 pages, more than 9000 photos, 2.5 inches thick, 11 x 8.5 inches large, and almost 8 lbs heavy! If you turn to the first pages you are lost. You forget the time and you are lost in the apparently infinite information explosion contained in this work...for the Hapkidoin it is a treasure chest full of information and impulses...If I had the choice to take a book with me onto a lonely island, I would decide on this book...An absolute must for any Hapkidoin!" - Hapkidoshop.com (Germany)

"The best martial arts book ever published...How does one even begin to review a book of this scope and sophistication? My first inclination is to pronounce it to be the Holy Grail of martial arts instructional texts...bringing a new level of clarity and intellectual precision in presenting previously 'too complex to describe' concepts and techniques...It is simply a monumental accomplishment, nothing less, and belongs in every library...You can spend years finding things in Tedeschi's book which will broaden and enhance your own personal practice." - IronCrane.com

"This book is in my experience the most comprehensive ever written on a single martial art. It is superbly organized, highly informative, and contains thousands of outstanding photographs. An authoritative presentation of basic principles and techniques, integrated with modern innovations, makes this work indispensable to martial artists of virtually any style." - Professor Wally Jay, founder and grandmaster of Jujitsu America

"Hapkido is an overwhelming achievement. Its comprehensiveness and the quality of the writing and design are unmatched in martial arts literature. The author's integration of history, philosophy, and technique into the larger framework of martial arts as a whole makes this book invaluable to any martial artist. Tedeschi's treatment of weapons techniques is honest, practical, and well worth studying." - Nicklaus Suino, author of The Art of Japanese Swordsmanship

Buy this book for reference! (and get training on the mat with your local Master!)
By Thomas Richey
Hapkido Practitioner - training hard for 3 years (training 4-6 times per week) and I understand the tension between the Eastern and Western philosophies. Whatever criticism is leveled by the Easterners that this "isn't 'real Hapkido' from an Asian source" can be counterbalanced with "I am an American, this is how we Westerners think, and Mr. Tedeschi speaks our language - literally and figuratively." Moreover it is already understood that one doesn't learn any art from a book (don't be so naive), it's just a reference tool. So to everyone out there I say: "buy this book" and "get yourself a qualified master" and "get on the mat and train!"

Fantastic book on Hapkido for all martial artists
By Paul Collins
This is an enormous book. A bible of Hapkido, and a wonderful book for anyone interested in martial arts. Marc Tedeschi has shown a masterful knowledge of all aspects of Hapkido and includes training information and applications for everything. I was interested in Hapkido because I do Taekwondo and wanted Taekwondo with another Korean martial art. This book provides a lot of useful information on the history of Hapkido and the Masters of Hapkido, as well as giving valuable information about other masters from other martial arts. This book will prove valuable for any martial artist who likes to read, and is probably the most comprehensive reference book for the Hapkido practitioner. I will be making constant reference to it as I pursue my Hapkido journey. This review is not aimed toward influencing martial artists to take up Hapkido, all martial arts have their good points. However, I did not realise, before getting this amazing book, how many things are included in Hapkido; like joint locks and throws, vital points, pressure points (similar to what I learned in my Kyusho Jitsu black belt training), and a vast array of weaponry including long staff, short staff, cane, sword, rope etc. I give this book the highest recommendation.

Really not a total beginner's book.
By tania
Very good book. Certainly comprehensive. Just wish there were clearer descriptions of the forms. Don't get me wrong, the descriptions are good but as a beginner, I need more. Perhaps it is because I'm a white belt that I need more step by step directions and a slightly different format.
I still highly recommend this book but think I'll be using the introductory book as well.

The Fire Next Time (Vintage International), by James Baldwin

A national bestseller when it first appeared in 1963, The Fire Next Time galvanized the nation and gave passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement. At once a powerful evocation of James Baldwin's early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice, the book is an intensely personal and provocative document. It consists of two "letters," written on the occasion of the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation, that exhort Americans, both black and white, to attack the terrible legacy of racism. Described by The New York Times Book Review as "sermon, ultimatum, confession, deposition, testament, and chronicle...all presented in searing, brilliant prose," The Fire Next Time stands as a classic of our literature.

Amazon.com Review
It's shocking how little has changed between the races in this country since 1963, when James Baldwin published this coolly impassioned plea to "end the racial nightmare." The Fire Next Time--even the title is beautiful, resonant, and incendiary. "Do I really want to be integrated into a burning house?" Baldwin demands, flicking aside the central race issue of his day and calling instead for full and shared acceptance of the fact that America is and always has been a multiracial society. Without this acceptance, he argues, the nation dooms itself to "sterility and decay" and to eventual destruction at the hands of the oppressed: "The Negroes of this country may never be able to rise to power, but they are very well placed indeed to precipitate chaos and ring down the curtain on the American dream."

Baldwin's seething insights and directives, so disturbing to the white liberals and black moderates of his day, have become the starting point for discussions of American race relations: that debasement and oppression of one people by another is "a recipe for murder"; that "color is not a human or a personal reality; it is a political reality"; that whites can only truly liberate themselves when they liberate blacks, indeed when they "become black" symbolically and spiritually; that blacks and whites "deeply need each other here" in order for America to realize its identity as a nation.

Yet despite its edgy tone and the strong undercurrent of violence, The Fire Next Time is ultimately a hopeful and healing essay. Baldwin ranges far in these hundred pages--from a memoir of his abortive teenage religious awakening in Harlem (an interesting commentary on his first novel Go Tell It on the Mountain) to a disturbing encounter with Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad. But what binds it all together is the eloquence, intimacy, and controlled urgency of the voice. Baldwin clearly paid in sweat and shame for every word in this text. What's incredible is that he managed to keep his cool. --David Laskin

From Publishers Weekly
Speakers or headsets will have to be turned up to listen to Jesse L. Martin's low, slow reading of Baldwin's classic long essay on racism and African-American identity. Martin seeks to be respectful of Baldwin, but he ends up rendering the meaning and the force of his work relatively inert. Pausing in poorly selected places, placing emphasis where little should be placed, Martin does not convey the precision and anger of Baldwin's prose. Instead, Baldwin's book becomes Great Literature, to be intoned and honored, but not truly grasped. Readers with an interest in Baldwin's work will be far better served by reading his prose to themselves than having Martin read it to them. A Vintage paperback.(Apr.)

"So eloquent in its passion and so scorching in its candor that it is bound to unsettle any reader. As a novelist and writer of uncommon talent, James Baldwin plunges to the human heart of the matter."

By far one of the best works I've ever read
By Erin
Growing up as the daughter of white parents in the Deep South, while my parents did everything in their power to try and keep us from using racial slurs, there was so much racism imbedded in the area that it was nearly impossible to fight it. It ranged from the blatant to the subtle, and it stuck in ways that I will probably be discovering for the rest of my life. Baldwin touches upon the use of religion to control, and the belief that the white man is the marker to which the black man should aspire, and that is still very clear in the world... As black men and women are told that their natural hair should be tamed to make them more appropriate for the work place, that the vernacular of their homes and families is somehow uneducated, even as they are surrounded by people who code-switch from a redneck southern dialect or a tough talking New York slang at home, to proper grammar in the workplace. At the end of the day, no one should aspire to whiteness. Instead, all should aspire to be the best they can be of exactly who they are.

This book, brilliantly written, greatly rocked my way of thinking. James Baldwin's grasp of humanity is one of the most realistic I've ever seen. He sees it and tells it just as it is.

Must Read for All Americans
By KarenEvans
This is a book to read with a pen! My copy, brand new, and fresh from the mailbox now has underlining everywhere and notes filling the margins. The language is beautiful in this book and there is a lot of wisdom to gather. This is my first James Baldwin and I crave more!

The book consists of two letters, a short one written to a nephew and a longer one written to discuss his thoughts and feelings about race, religion, and life. This is the most beautiful description in the entire book. I cannot possibly think of a more exquisite way to word how James sees his brother and how we often see those we have watched grow up.

"Other people cannot see what I see whenever I look into your father’s face for behind your father’s face as it is today are all those other faces which were his. Let him laugh and I see a cellar your father does not remember and a house he does not remember and I hear in his present laughter his laughter as a child."

Baldwin starts his letter by informing his nephew on how black people can be destroyed if they believe what some white people think about them. He discusses a hidden message telling black people to settle for mediocrity rather than striving for excellence. Baldwin believes that black people need to know their history and where they came from so that there will be “no limit to where you can go.”

"…We, with love, shall force our brothers to see themselves as they are, to cease fleeing from reality and begin to change it."

Every word rings true.
By Michelle Ryan
Should be required reading for every American. Rarely have I read words of such clarity, elegance and insight in any subject. That Baldwin was able to write in this way about race is a gift to all who wish to heal our deep national wound. And we should all wish to heal it. Every word rings true.

Baldwin was that rare person who has a deep understanding of the frailty, nobility and beauty of the human soul. His compassion and humanity shines forth through every brilliant word in this powerful book. He wrote from a place few have been able to attain, sharing home truths without harsh cruelty, but with great clarity and authority. Sadly, what he wrote in 1963 in this book applies to this day: We have not yet learned what he was trying so hard to teach us and we have much left to do. Read this book, let its profound lessons guide you deep into self inquiry, so that you too might understand the nature of your soul, and perhaps become a better human being in the process.
