THEN: EMMA

It’s a lovely little flat, the agent says with what could almost pass for genuine enthusiasm. Close to the amenities. And there’s that private bit of roof. That could become a sun terrace, subject of course to the landlord’s consent.

Nice, Simon agrees, trying not to catch my eye. I’d known the flat was no good as soon as I walked in and saw that six-foot stretch of roof below one of the windows. Si knows it too but he doesn’t want to tell the agent, or at least not so soon it’ll seem rude. He might even hope that if I listen to the man’s stupid patter long enough I’ll waver. The agent’s Simon’s kind of guy: sharp, brash, eager. He probably reads the magazine Simon works for. They were exchanging sports
chat before we even got up the stairs.

And here you have a decent-sized bedroom, the agent’s saying. With ample—

It’s no good, I interrupt, cutting short the charade. It’s not right for us.

The agent raises his eyebrows. You can’t be too choosy in this market, he says. This’ll be gone by tonight. Five viewings today, and it’s not even on our website yet.

It’s not secure enough, I say flatly. Shall we go?

There are locks on all the windows, he points out, plus a Chubb on the door. Of course, you could install a burglar alarm, if security’s a particular concern. I don’t think the landlord would have any objection.

He’s talking across me now, to Simon. Particular concern. He might as well have said, Oh, is the girlfriend a bit of a drama queen?

I’ll wait outside, I say, turning to leave.

Realizing he’s blundered, the agent adds, If it’s the area that’s the problem, perhaps you should have a look farther west.

We already have, Simon says. It’s all out of our budget. Apart from the ones the size of a tea bag. He’s trying to keep the frustration out of his voice, but the fact that he needs to riles me even more.

There’s a one-bedroom in Queen’s Park, the agent says. A bit grotty, but . . .

We looked at it, Simon says. In the end we felt it was just a bit too close to that estate. His tone makes it clear that we means “she.”

Or there’s a third-floor just come on in Kilburn—

That too. There was a drainpipe next to one of the windows.

The agent looks puzzled.

Someone could have climbed it, Simon explains.

Right. Well, the rental season’s only just started. Perhaps if you wait a bit.

The agent has clearly decided we’re time-wasters: He too is sidling toward the door. I go and stand outside, on the landing, so he won’t come near me.

We’ve already given notice on our old place, I hear Simon say. We’re running out of options. He lowers his voice. Look, mate, we were burgled. Five weeks ago. Two men broke in and threatened Emma with a knife. You can see why she’d be a bit jumpy.

Oh, the agent says. Shit. If someone did that to my girlfriend I don’t know what I’d do. Look, this might be a long shot, but . . . His voice trails off.

Yes? Simon says.

Has anyone at the office mentioned One Folgate Street to you?

I don’t think so. Has it just come on?

Not exactly, no.

The agent seems unsure whether to pursue this or not.

But it’s available? Simon persists.

Technically, yes, the agent says. And it’s a fantastic property. Absolutely fantastic. In a different league from this. But the landlord’s . . .to say he’s particular would be putting it mildly.

What area? Simon asks.

Hampstead, the agent says. Well, more like Hendon. But it’s really quiet.

Em? Simon calls.

I go back inside. We might as well take a look, I say. We’re halfway there now.

The agent nods. I’ll stop by the office, he says, see if I can locate the details. It’s been a while since I showed anyone around, actually. It’s not a place that would suit just anyone. But I think it might be right up your street. Sorry, no pun intended.



NOW: JANE

“That’s the last one.” The agent, whose name is Camilla, drums her fingers on the steering wheel of her Smart car. “So really, it’s time to make up our minds.”

I sigh. The flat we’ve just viewed, in a run-down mansion block off West End Lane, is the only one in my price range. And I’d just about persuaded myself it was all right—ignoring the peeling wallpaper, the faint smell of someone else’s cooking seeping up from the flat below, the poky bedroom and the mold spattered across the unventilated bathroom—until I’d heard a bell being rung nearby, an old-fashioned hand bell, and the place was suddenly filled with the noise of children. Going to the window, I found myself looking down at a school. I could see into a room being used by a toddler group, the windows hung with cutouts of paper bunnies and geese. Pain tugged at my insides.

“I think I’ll pass on this one,” I managed to say.

“Really?” Camilla seemed surprised. “Is it the school? The previous tenants said they rather liked the sound of children playing.”

“Though not so much they decided to stay.” I turned away. “Shall we go?”

Now Camilla leaves a long, tactical silence as she drives us back to her office. Eventually she says,
“If nothing we saw today took your fancy, we might have to think about upping your budget.”

“Unfortunately, my budget can’t budge,” I say drily, looking out the window.

“Then you might have to be a bit less picky,” she says tartly.

“About that last one. There are . . . personal reasons why I can’t live next to a school. Not right now.”

I see her eyes going to my stomach, still a little flabby from my pregnancy, and her eyes widen as she makes the connection. “Oh,” she says. Camilla isn’t quite as dim as she looks, for which I’m grateful. She doesn’t need me to spell it out.

Instead, she seems to come to a decision.

“Look, there is one other place. We’re not really meant to show it without the owner’s express permission, but occasionally we do anyway. It freaks some people out, but personally I think it’s amazing.”

“An amazing property on my budget? We’re not talking about a houseboat, are we?”

“God, no. Almost the opposite. A modern building in Hendon. A whole house—only one bedroom, but loads of space. The owner is the architect. He’s actually really famous. Do you ever buy clothes at Wanderer?”

“Wanderer . . .” In my previous life, when I had money and a proper, well-paid job, I did sometimes go into the Wanderer shop on Bond Street, a terrifyingly minimalist space where a handful of eye-wateringly expensive dresses were laid out on thick stone slabs like sacrificial virgins, and the sales assistants all dressed in black kimonos.

“Occasionally. Why?”

“The Monkford Partnership designs all their stores. He’s what they call a techno-minimalist
or something. Lots of hidden gadgetry, but otherwise everything’s completely bare.” She shoots me a look. “I should warn you, some people find his style a bit . . . austere.”

“I can cope with that.”

“And . . .”

“Yes?” I prompt, when she doesn’t go on.

“It’s not a straightforward landlord–tenant agreement,” she says hesitantly.

“Meaning?”

“I think,” she says, flicking down her indicator and moving into the left-hand lane, “we should take a look at the property first, see if you fall in love with it. Then I’ll explain the drawbacks.”

Exceeds the hype

As a VINE reviewer, you get used to “advanced praise” and publisher PR statements about how great this book is going to be.
This book exceeds the hype, it might be better than they say it is.
I was hooked and read it in two days about ten hours total reading time.
Nothing is really what it seems to be, everyone has a hidden agenda and the characters might shift at any point.
This seems to be a very straightforward story until the last 40 pages.
However, the author has given us the information, if we notice it.
The ending is very logical, given the story and the people. There is no, 100-year relationship or rabbit out of the hat here.

Be aware this is a very adult story with some graphic sex.
Loved the book and looking forward to the movie.

A good read but a disappointing ending

I listened to the audio version of the novel. There is a lot of shifting between "Then Emma" and "Now Jane" which can get confusing while listening during driving. There are two different women readers, but they sound very similar, which doesn't help the confusion. Several reviews compare this work to "50 Shades of Grey". I do not agree. While there is sexual content, this is not the focus of the book. I enjoyed the book but was disappointed with the ending, which seems a bit "typical Hollywood".

I really liked this unusual story. I didn't know what to expect which is refreshing. I liked the characters and enjoyed this book.

Es un libro muy bien escrito, me encantó la historia y me hizo pensar en que nuestra sociedad se ha vuelto un poco como la que describe Orwell con tecnología para monitorear a cualquier individuo sobre la tierra y con medios de comunicación manipulados para hacer olvidar el pasado a las personas. Sobre la guerra entre las potencias que se describen en el libro se me vino a la mente las guerras interminables de la actualidad.

Recomiendo mucho este libro y a los mexicanos en general, poner mucha atención al libro de Goldstein que se describe en los últimos capítulos de la segunda parte del libro, va muy acorde a nuestra realidad.

Great book

This covers everything from wood types (and the related science behind understanding them) to tool types and uses. It obviously can't cover everything related to the subject of wood working, but should be very interesting to anyone who wants to learn more about the subject or who is going to start some projects of their own.

I consider this a general knowledge book, which is exactly what I was looking for. Great picture quality, a lot of information, and well written.

this manual is excellent!!

I gave a review of another book on what could be called 'woodworking basics' and I swore by it without reservations. With this one, I have to shout it from the rooftops . . . this manual is excellent!!!! It is truly and completely packed with what I'd say, volumes of information! It begins with how wood is extracted and formed from various trees into the types and grades of different woods and their uses, to the many tools one can choose to create products. It also lists a number of Japanese tools in existence and makes differing comparisons with American and European tools. A number of the tools I have now I've purchased after simply reading through these sections. The authors go into detail about the best use for each tools and even how to extend the effectiveness and life the of some. One tool is on the way now as I am typing and it's one that I couldn't find anywhere, especially in either of the home improvement stores I frequent mostly. The information in this book is extensive, to say the least. Five stars is just simply not enough for this item. It is truly a must have in anyone's collection!!!

It is beautifully done. The pictures are beautiful, covers a lot of topics. I think there is enough for everyone but it is pretty basics, it is not a project book. For a beginner this would be marvelous; for an experience woodworker this is very nice to look at but you might not gain a bit of knowledge. It will take a while to take a closer look. But I do enjoy looking at all the illustrations and pictures.

The book was in great shape, I figured being a rental it would be torn and weathered but it looked brand new. It a great book to introduce you to the social welfare system we have in America. It has a detailed history of social welfare policy and programming as well, a must know for all upcoming social workers!

About the Author
Dr. Udo Ulfkotte is a respected journalist and a former editor for the German main daily newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Dr. Ulfkotte received his doctorate at the University of Freiburg in 2003 in foreign policy. Dr. Ulfkotte is a Fellow of the Marshall Memorial Fund. He was a member of the Policy Planning Staff of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, a Speaker of Bundeskademie for Security Policy, a guest-speaker at the Journalists Academy of Friedrich Ebert Foundation, and taught by 1999-2007 in the Department of Business Administration "security management" at the University of Lüneburg. Despite all their preparation and training, the mission unraveled and they found themselves fighting ad hoc battles in ad hoc groups. STRUCTURALLY UNSOUND, BUT ENJOYABLE OVERALL

Bowden's book is written in the kind of language you would expect from a traditional journalist. He is clear, concise, and does not bog his language down in artistic flourish. In fact, in his Afterward he claims to be proud of this straightforwardness with the reader; this despite it garnering him a slight barb from one particular reviewer he mentions.

However, it must be said that the structure of the book is a little messy. The number of individuals whose points of view Bowden includes can be daunting to sift through. I did not even bother to count the POVs he puts down on paper, but the reader should be aware there is no centralized perspective to go back to for reference. The author does not inject himself into the story (e.g. "And then I interviewed this person who said..."), and ordinarily that is fine. But, with a book showcasing the perspectives of so many people -- from lowly soldiers, to the their families, to commanders, to politicians -- it is difficult to sort through who is who and why any particular person is relevant. What makes it worse is that Bowden doesn't really offer any breaks for a reader to register a transition from one person's POV to another. Unfortunately, this problem hampers the flow of the story as the reader, at times, may be forced to backtrack just to refresh his or her memory on who is who. To be fair, Bowden interviewed countless individuals and wanted to give a good many of them their due. I have no doubt he left out many of POVs despite deep reservation. Still, none of this matters if the reader is not discouraged by such things. I was still able to jog through the book at a brisk and enjoyable pace in spite of this road block.

Another important note: this book corresponds poorly with the eponymous movie. The reader will find many of the characters in the movie are composites of actual people Bowden describes in the book. Not to mention the movie glosses over some of the uglier aspects of war (e.g. in the book, Bowden writes the U.S. Rangers eventually start shooting anything and everything in their path, including a large number of unarmed civilians). So, if you are ready for a dose of reality, read the book and drop your jaw.

Classic Account in Military History

I've seen the movie, read the book and listened to the audiobook. My favorite was the audiobook, by far. Unfortunately, movies almost always include scenes that aren't technically correct. But the audiobook had a secret weapon, namely Joe Morton, the narrator. Morton was the real thing, and this is one of those very rare cases where the narrator is so good and appropriate that it makes a good book into classic high art.

There is a side to this story that we didn't know at the time the book was published. The earlier attacks on our forces had al-Qaeda behind them. They were meticulously planned well in advance. After that experience, the Clinton administration got our forces out of there. This was supported in our media and presidential ratings went up. It's important to understand the conflict in context.

The story itself, not the movie, is technically correct and superb. In it, we can see the sacrifice and bravery of our troops as well as the reality of Mogadishu and fearlessness of the fighters there. The reckless fighting spirit of Mogadishuans was enhanced with khat, a very important drug in their tribal society. Such a place with a culture of hospitality unknown to the West had become a living hell, and it was worse in areas outside that city.

In particular we get the story within the story about the survival of Mike Durant. He was a Chief Warrant Officer 3 at the time, serving in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. This suspenseful account resulted in a partial silver lining when he was released after eleven days in captivity.

Military historians will continue to laud this story for its richness in geopolitics, technical excellence, usefulness for teaching military principles, survival credits, esprit de corps and Joe Morton's performance. I recommend this audiobook without reservation.

Engaging and Informative

I read Black Hawk Down with a group of four other people as a part of a literature discussion. Most, if not all, of them had seen the film already, but I had not. I had a little trouble keeping up with the many character names at the beginning of the book, but I settled in about a third of the way through. This is, of course, a violent book, made more intense because of the fact that it all really happened, and the language and subject matter of fighting men under stress is a constant. I can't imagine being in the situation in which these soldiers found themselves. Interesting fast read

This book is an easy fast read. Although the information is pretty basic, it has helped me tremendously to start a new eating plan and after just a few weeks I can already see and feel a difference. Going to keep going with it! It helps to read about someone else's journey with Lupus and how much diet can help and makes me feel hopeful.

I am encouraged by this book! I am hopeful that this will really work as my Lupus has been progressing pretty quickly this past year. I can no longer take any pain meds as they gave me four bleeding ulcers. I want to get back to my life. I'm giving this drastic life style a .

Buy a real smoothie book

I was disappointed when I received this pamphlet (it is not a book) for nearly $10. There are 25 pages of smoothie recipes and the pages feel line you printed it at home. That said, the recipes are ok. I would pay a few more dollars and get an actual smoothie book, like Simple Green Smoothies with over 150 recipes rather than 24.
