Great Chapter Books for your Young Reader!

We are always looking for chapter books for our daughter (age 7). She has always been an excellent reader reading well above her age group and gets through books quickly. That is great, but challenging when trying to keep up with her and looking for good chapter books for her age. We focus primarily on positive stories and avoid series with less appropriate language or attitudes.

The Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew series has been great. It is a fun reboot of the old Nancy Drew stories brought into the present day with more up-to-date stories and technology. They have fun little mysteries focused on younger kids. My daughter has been going through these like water. They keep her interest and really entertain her. The nice thing is that this series has a lot of books available already (40 at the time of this review and more coming) and several collections of multiple books sold at a discount. We always run out of books, so a big series like this is great. Highly Recommended!

Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew #2 "Scream for Ice Cream"

Great Series!! I purchased Books 1-8, for an 8-year old...she absolutely loves them. She enjoys reading, and since she is required to read 30-minutes every night for school, the chapter books come in very handy. She often finds herself reading more than 30-minutes, because she wants to finish a certain chapter, etc. The stories are great, fun, interesting, the illustrations are okay. She looks forward to following the main characters throughout the different series. Also worth mentioning, is the "activity" page within the books; they are projects that can be done later if interested, and if you enjoy doing some craft with your little ones every once in a while, it's a nice addition (sometimes she wants to do them...thankfully not always). Highly recommend the books, and will definitely be purchasing additional series.Scream for Ice Cream (Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew #2)

Good Old Nancy Drew!

My daughter needed a mystery book for a report (3rd Grade). I searched Amazon to find her one she'd stay interested in and ran across the Nancy Drew collection. Hello nostalgia! I remember reading these books when I was a little girl, and my daughter loved it just as much as I hoped she would. P.S. She aced her report!

Frustrating.

This was a frustrating "nobody wins" story, and the ending was very anticlimactic. I wished that the author had done a better job in connecting the main character's war service and his overwhelming desire to tell the truth. The war service and awards for valor were almost irrelevant to those decisions, in my opinion.

The first two-thirds of the book were very good, but the final third showed some difficulty in bringing all the facets of the story to a conclusion. So, in my opinion, the book sort of hobbled across the finish line, exhausted.

Worth Your Time!

With the movie coming out on Friday (9/2/16), I finished this book at the right time!

I loved it, hands down. The author creates a rich, full and beautiful world for us to explore within the story. Everything she describes is easy to envision and the characters seem like real people. It’s so easy to get lost within the pages and have all sorts of internal debates with yourself. The whole book is very morally ambiguous and I believe that it is part of the point the book is trying to make. What’s the right thing to do? What’s wrong? Is there an in-between? Who is in the right within the story?

The basic spoiler-free premise, is a young couple live on a lighthouse off the coast of Australia in the 1920s. After several miscarriages, a boat washes ashore the island with a deceased man and an alive infant. The lighthouse couple decide to keep the child and the story is what follows in the book.

I’m going to keep this review short and sweet because there will probably be a surge in popularity following the release of the movie. This book is beautifully written and will make you think. It has rich and full characters, beautiful landscapes and a story-line that hooks you and doesn’t release until the book is over. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone, regardless of what genre you prefer (I prefer horror, but loved this one). You will not regret it!

loved & hated some characters

This book was good, but I didn't think it was particularly great or amazing. The storyline felt more like a soap opera to me than anything. The author described the scenery amazingly well so that was great to picture as I was reading, however the heart of the story was just too dramatic and more than a little unbelievable to me. I loved the story when it was focusing on Tom, the traumatized vet, and his time on Janus Rock, wandering in and out of his thoughts out there all alone (that was really the gem in the book in my opinion). His wife Isabel just didn't click as a character for me very well, and it made it difficult to feel for her in those distraught and emotional moments. Honestly, her character just mostly annoyed me and made me think poor Tom would have been better off had he never met her. I will probably watch the film, but only because I want to see a filmmaker's rendition of Janus Rock, I won't be watching for the story.

One of the most influential books of all time

The idea of "reviewing" this is more than a little silly -- it's arguably the most influential non-religious work of all time -- but I thought a few comments & historical notes might still be worthwhile.

"The Prince" was essentially the first work of political realism in Western thought -- the first work of Western political philosophy that concerned itself not with the ideal government (as Plato had done in his _Republic_) but with the practical realities of getting and holding power. To describe the impact and influence of that willingness, that first notion that conventional morality might not be the best guide to success, would be as impossible a task as trying to summarize the influence of Galileo. Napoleon is rumored to have written extensive annotations to this book; Stalin allegedly kept a copy on his nightstand. Half of Shakespeare's villains (Iago, Richard III, etc.) derive their character in whole or part from this text.

Most of this book is extraordinarily controversial, even today, yet still fundamentally difficult to argue against; there's a reason the Catholic Church kept it on the _Index Librorum Prohibitorum_ for centuries. If you're looking for food for thought, it's here.

This particular kindle edition is fairly good; the text is cleanly presented with few typographical or scanning errors, and the translator has clearly made a significant effort to present the text as accurately as possible in a modern translation, with several footnotes detailing possible alternate translations of particular words, etc. In addition to the text of _The Prince_, this edition also includes two shorter historical works by Machiavelli, "Descriptions of the Methods Adopted by the Duke Valentino When Murdering Vitellozzo Vitelli, Oliverotto da Fermo, the Signor Pagolo, and the Duke di Gravina Orsini," and "The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca." ("Duke Valentino" is an alternate name for Cesare Borgia). Both additional texts are, in essence, case studies of how contemporary historical figures achieved success by acting according to the precepts which Machiavelli outlines in the main body of the text, and as such are very useful and interesting companion reads.

Introduction to basic political manipulation.

I decided to buy the Prince along with the Art of War and The Book of 5 Rings as a set, since these works have a reputation for helping people understand the ways of war and power. Of the three, I would say that the Prince holds up the best in our modern time. Machiavelli's lesson on how to gain and maintain power are fairly basic, but still important. Niccolo uses a lot of examples of other rulers, particularly from Italy, to illustrate his points. While having a working knowledge of the history of these men would certainly make the book better, he provides enough detail to get his point across without it.

One note: After the introduction, the author of the forward includes a lengthy sample of his own fiction book 'The Malice of Fortune', that takes up half the book before you reach the Prince. I see it more as bonus content, but just know you'll have to flip a lot of pages to get to what you bought the book for.

Machiavelli's classic, now for Kindle

This review is of the (currently free) Kindle edition of The Prince.

As others have stated at much greater length and with far greater eloquence, this is one of the most important books of political thought and philosophy ever written, and a truly timeless classic. As such, the fact that it's available for free on Kindle makes this a terrific deal, worth every single penny and many more. All the usual conveniences of Kindle applies here: very fast to download via Whispernet, the handiness of being able to annotate and highlight important passages, bookmarking pages you want to reference again later, etc. The slickness of the Kindle format and capabilities plus the inherit worthiness of the book itself easily nets 4 stars.

It's been about forever since I last read The Prince, plus I don't really know anything about Italian, so I'm not really fit to talk about the quality of the translation. Suffice it to say that it's a fairly easy book to read and make sense of, but again I can't speak to how true this particular edition is to its source material.

Unfortunately, there are a few problems with this edition of The Prince that need to be mentioned, and which in the end detract a little from the overall score. The first and biggest is in the formatting of the book. In short, it looks like a plain-text notepad file converted into a Kindle book; there's no navigable Table of Contents or chapter breaks as with most commercial Kindle books, and the book itself flows from the title page almost directly into the background about Machiavelli and then from there straight into The Prince itself, with scarcely a break in the text to mark the transition. For someone well versed in The Prince this probably isn't much of an issue, but for the more casual reader it's a little distracting and may confuse some. The other problem is more one of personal preference, which is that there's no annotations alongside the text to put specific lines into context. Again, for someone well versed in Machiavelli's life and the real-world examples he uses throughout The Prince, this probably isn't a significant issue. For more casual readers, having a little context for the examples he uses would be helpful from time to time.

In the end, you get what you pay for, and as the above-reviewed version of The Prince was free, I can't complain too much. It's brilliant, it's relevant, and it's very convenient to have on my Kindle. What more do you want for the price?

In these unsettling tales from a neuroscientist every bit as quirky as the more famous Oliver Sacks, Ramachandran sets out his beliefs that no matter how bizarre the case, empirical, strikingly simple testing can illuminate the ways brain circuitry establishes "self." In a chatty, nearly avuncular style, he (along with his coauthor, a New York Times science writer) snatches territory from philosophers on how we think we know what we know. In one experiment, stroking an amputee's cheek produces sensations in his "phantom limb" because the part of the brain's map that once related to the lost limb has "invaded" the adjacent brain area that relates to the cheek. Unafraid to speculate, Ramachandran then moves a step closer toward indicating that the brain is not only a busy lump of genetically deemed-and-dying hard-wiring but an organ that can continuously "re-map" in response to new sensory information from the outside. Equally fascinating are Ramachandran's "mirror tricks" on amputees and paralyzed patients that begin to reveal how much the brain relies on context and comparison as well as on "inside" neural connectivity to form self. Perhaps most disquieting are beginnings of proof that much brain activity, including what we like to think of as uniquely human behavior, happens unbidden. There may be no escape from the un-Western conclusion that self is only a limited illusion. "De-throning man," as the author points out, is at the heart of most revolutionary scientific thought. Regrettably, his book sags in the middle as it drifts from these deft experiments into generalized musings on idiot-savants and phantom pregnancies, detracting from what is otherwise entertaining, tip-of-the-neurological-iceberg sleuthing. Fascinating

This author is someone I had heard about for his work on Phantom Limbs. He seems to be getting closer to understanding the mind and how we "work" better than any other researchers out there. He has a curious mind and thank God for the environment Salk/ UCSD which allows him free reign to explore his curiosity and hunches. This is how science should be investigated.. simply and without massive expensive set ups, yet using innovative ideas to find REAL answers.
I love the style of writing. It is fast paced and never boring, even though it is about medical issues, it still reads like "Sherlock Holmes" wrote it... this is Dr. Ramachandran's nick name. There are case stories in this book that will keep you in cocktail chatter for months. Every page is a little more incredible than the previous one. All is written for the lay reader, without condescension. Highly recommended and just be warned--it is hard to put it down.

Ramachandran and Blakeslee created this delightful book using humor, logic and simple tests to illuminate how the brain works and doesn't work. Readers are even invited to run their own test at home to confirm Rama's (his term) conclusions.

Why does an amputee deny her left arm is missing or her paralyzed arm belongs to her brother?

Such examples offer fertile areas to explore to find what specific brain cells seem related to such behavior.

Could we alter the perception of a missing arm using mirrors? The answer is "yes" and by doing so we learn a little more about our brain's adaptivity.

So what's going on when a person can square a fifteen digit number as fast as he can say the answer?

While these small bites offer small answers, many such bites shed light on big answers.

While I want to learn more about the brain, I suspect whatever book I select will be way too technical so I will just reread PITB again.

It's that good.

Really Stimulates Your Little Gray Cells

Like Oliver Sacks, Ramachandran tells of some startling neurological insights he's gained by examining unusual cases. These pages contain summary case histories of individuals who can't recognize faces - of individuals who deny that various body parts belong to them - of individuals who experience vivid hallucinations.

Many of Ramachandran's breakthrough theories though are based on his treatment of individuals who suffered from phantom pain after an amputation. In the course of probing this puzzling phenomenon, Ramachandran hit upon some ideas that have far-reaching implications. Studying this phenomenon allowed him to advance new theories about the way stimuli are received and mapped in the brain.

When a leg is amputated, the area of the brain that would normally register sense impressions from it is left without any incoming stimuli. That part of the brain sits expectant and hungry for some incoming messages. Neural connections in adjacent areas of the brain then sometimes expand, filling in the information vacuum. Those adjacent areas are ordinarily dedicated to registering sensation from unrelated parts of the body, such as the face. So when anyone touches the amputee's face, that sensation might be amplified and experienced as severe pain in a leg that is no longer there.

Ramachandran believes that this tendency of the brain to adapt and "fill-in" might be at the root of many neural dysfunctions. When a person loses his sight in a part of his visual field, surrounding neurons might elaborate and reach in to fill the void. When a person loses some aspect of neuronal processing that has to do with body image, other neurons from areas of adjacent functioning might reach in to offer sensation input. The borrowed processing mechanism doesn't always fit its functioning into a "normal," coherent sense of the world though. The result can be strange distortions of perception.

These ideas might explain all sorts of human folly - such as fetishes. Specifically, Ramachandran suggests that foot fetishes might arise because the sensation processing areas devoted to the feet and to the genitals typically lie adjacent to each other in the brain. Similarly, various kinds of body dysmorphic disorders, such as anorexia, might be traced to such take-overs.

This book was written in 1998. Ramachandran suggested many experiments that could be made to test his theories. I wonder how many have been done in the interim? I'm eager to check out any of his more recent writings to get updates on some of these questions.

He writes in an accessible style. What's more, he suggests a number of very simple, non-invasive techniques that people might experiment with to relieve themselves or family members of dangerous delusions. For example, he suggests spritzing cold water into the left ear of anorexics; he suggests using mirrors to help "neglect" patients recover an awareness of both sides of their body and of their environment.

The 35 pages of small-print footnotes at the end of the book might appear to be a chore that you'd be inclined to skip. But they serve as a good summary of the main text, and also contain many fascinating suggestions for further experiments that could either confirm or disprove the important ideas in this book.

Overall, this book is a real brain-teaser.

Great tips

An interesting and very thought-provoking read about arguably one of the most impressive investors to have ever lived. I have always been a fan of Warren Buffet and have read numerous biographies and quite a few books by the man himself, so of course I was pleasantly surprised when I came across this read because it offers a different approach than what I am usually accustomed to reading.
This book offers a premise that is focused more on gaining inspiration and business skills directly from the man himself, and it is structured in a way that makes it concise and easy to read. This is perfect for me, as usually my time is quite limited and my days are often busy. With that being stated, quality is not sacrificed due to the length of the book and it undoubtedly left me with a lot to reflect on after I had finished.

Love Warren Buffett

I hear a lot about Warren Buffett from close friends and that was about the extent of my knowledge of the man to date. I had heard that he has amassed incredible riches, yet remains very humble and down to earth. This impresses me so I was anxious to learn a bit more. This book by George Ilian has some great information on the man, including a lot of notations on his business successes and philosophies. While not an in depth biography by any means, I feel as if I understand Buffett much better now and have come away with some useful business tips that I can apply to my own life.

Learning from Warren Buffet.

This book describes the life and practices of Warren Buffet, arguably one of the most successful investors to ever live. In the book, we learn that Warren had a passion for making money and ambition from a very early age. He also learned that the true key to success in buying stocks was not getting into a buying and selling frenzy, but to be patient and wait for the market at the tender age of 11. Another factor to Warren's success is that he looks at the over all value of each company, not just their stock at the time of purchase.The book also is sprinkled with different thought provoking quotes by Buffet that give a real insight into the mind of this brilliant investor. The book is well written and peppered with many lessons that we can all take away from the life and success of Warren Buffet.

bought for school but what a fantastic read. This book contains tons of information that is sure to be useless by the time i graduate. With information changing so fast the techniques i learned will be great for dealing with people who are much older than me and ready to retire. Not to mention how angry they will feel having someone half their age tell them how to work harder and smarter. :)

Great content, not-so-great product

I am currently taking an introduction to project management class, and this book has been very helpful thus far. It is well-written and easy to read and understand.

However, I am not a fan of the binder ready version. There were no other ways to purchase the book at my time of purchase. I would have much preferred an actual bound book, as the pages included in this version are very thin and easily tear. Also, it would have been nice if an eBook version was included with the purchase of this book, seeing as though it cost over $180.00.

Loose leaf is terrible but the book is good.

This book is more about how to do project management than just what you should do like the PMBOK. If they have a hard copy or paper back get that. Loose leaf is terrible. It rips and you have to buy a separate binder.

About the Author

Henry M. Sayre is Distinguished Professor of Art History at Oregon State University-Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. He earned his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Washington. He is producer and creator of the 10-part television series, A World of Art: Works in Progress, aired on PBS in the fall of 1997; and author of seven books, including A World of Art, The Visual Text of William Carlos Williams, The Object of Performance: The American Avante-Garde since 1970; and an art history book for children, Cave Paintings to Picasso.

Should not be called "The Humanities", but rather Western European Art History

I recently had to read this entire book for my Humanities course, and maybe it's just me and my definition of humanities, but I felt this book was less about multiple cultures and more about art history, specifically that of Western European and to some extent American. I think maybe one chapter was completely dedicated to the influence from Asia. Quite honestly I'm tired of learning things from a Western European point of view. Yes I am an Italian American, and even I am fed up with how much this perspective dominates our classrooms. To me Humanities is about multiple cultures and history from around the ENTIRE globe. The title of the book and the class shouldn't be so all encompassing if it's really going to leave out so much. I also didn't care to learn about history primarily through the perspective of art. Yes I appreciate art, but if I wanted to go into this kind of depth I would have taken an actual art history class. Maybe this sounds uncultured, but so be it. If you have to read this for your class, be prepared to memorize a bunch of crap about the history of painting and architecture (and a little bit of literature, but not much), because you will get only enough history to barely explain it's influence on the art, not a complete perspective to the happenings around the world.

Interesting and not too Wordy

Like many of you I purchased this book because it is required for a class. Although I probably wouldn't read it on my own time just for fun, I will say its an easy read. I hate when textbooks are wordy and complicated and you read several pages and realize you have no idea what its talking about. I found this one to be quite the opposite. It is by no means, dumbed down but it isnt so complicated that you don't want to read it. There are lots of images which is nice. I realize I sound like a little kid but im just making the point that for a textbook, its not that bad.

I needed this book for a Humanities course. It vastly different from humanities books in the past. It's quite detailed and the pages of the book are thick, which shows that the publisher used good paper. The photos are quite clear and colorful. The information is detailed and if you are trying to find information about a subject, the index is more than capable. Great book.
