Amazon.com Review
Six Sigma is a data-driven management system with near-perfect-performance objectives that has been employed to acclaim at leading corporations like General Electric. Its name is derived from the eye-catching statistical target of operating with no more than 3.4 defects per one million chances, but Peter Pande, Robert Neuman, and Roland Cavanagh--associates in a firm providing Six Sigma implementation, training, and management services--contend its principles can be applied in businesses of all types to routinely reduce costs, improve productivity, increase market share, and achieve other positive results. The Six Sigma Way is their comprehensive self-help guide to adapting and using the system under various conditions. Its first two parts cover fundamentals and provide specific suggestions for aligning the process with individual needs and goals. (These include sections on balancing potential costs and benefits, clarifying objectives, and defining time frames.) The final part, which accounts for more than half the book, focuses on implementation through a detailed yet flexible five-step "road map" tied to a company's core processes, key customers, current performance, "high-potential improvement opportunities," and future practices. While the procedure is quite complex, diligent managers should be able to bring at least basic components to their organization with the tools and techniques provided. --Howard Rothman

The Six Sigma Reference!
By O. Halabieh
This book is THE reference on Six Sigma. The authors define it as "A comprehensive and flexible system for achieving, sustaining and maximizing business success. Six Sigma is uniquely driven by close understanding of customer needs, disciplined use of facts, data, and statistical analysis, and diligent attention to managing, improving, and reinventing business processes."

This work is made up of three major sections. The first part provides an executive summary of this system. The second part focuses on the organizational aspects of adopting this system. The last part, focuses on the actual implementation of Six Sigma including the roadmap and tools. Also included in this book, are numerous appendices that provide further "practical support".

What sets this book apart is both the breadth and depth in which the topic is discussed. Whether one is a novice or expert, looking to obtain a high level overview or a deep understanding of the subject matter, this book is for you. In addition, the interspersed case studies, examples and tools make it very practical and applicable. After reading this book - one cannot but concur with the authors' closing remark: "We believe - and hope you agree - that there are enough essential, powerful, and valuable elements to make the Six Sigma system, in some way, part of every successful business. At the same time, we strongly encourage you to adapt the discipline and methods of Six Sigma to best impact your unique culture, industry, market position, people, and strategy. Our biggest fear is that people will "accept" or "reject" Six Sigma as it it were a thing (falling victim to the Tyranny of the Or) and not use it as a flexible system."

Below are key excerpts from the book, that I found particularly insightful:

1) "The Benefits of Six Sigma: 1) Generates sustained success...2) Sets a performance goal for everyone...3) Enhances value to customers...4) Accelerates the rate of improvement...5) Promotes learning and "cross pollination"...6) Executes strategic change"

2) "Six Themes of Six Sigma: 1) Genuine Focus on the Customer...2) Data- and Fact-Driven Management...3) Process focus, Management, and Improvement...4) Proactive Management...5) Boundaryless Collaboration...6) Drive for Perfection; Tolerance for Failure"

3) "Six Sigma Improvement and Management Strategies: 1) Process Improvement: Finding Targeted Solutions...2) Process Design/Redesign: Building a Better Business...3) Process Management: The Infrastructure for Six Sigma Leadership"

4) "In the Six Sigma Way, we will use and refer to a five-phase improvement cycle that has become increasingly common in Six Sigma organizations: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control - or DMAIC."

5) "...The ideal roadmap for establishing the Six Sigma system and launching improvements...1) Identify core processes and key customers. 2) Define customer requirements. 3) Measure current performance. 4) Prioritize, analyze, and implement improvements. 5) Expand and integrate the Six Sigma system."

6) "Five-step measurement implementation model: 1) Select what to measure 2) Develop operational definitions 3) Identify data sources 4) Prepare collection & sampling plan 5) Implement and refine measurement"

7) "We can offer an assessment model, however, based on two major conditions - both of which must be met if process design/redesign is going to work: 1) A major need, threat, or opportunity exists: a) Shifts in customer needs/requirements...b) Demand for greater flexibility...c) New technologies...d) New or changed rules and regulations...e) Competitors are changing...f) Old assumptions (or paradigms) are invalid...g) The current process is "a mess"...2) You're ready and willing to take on the risk: a) Longer lead-time for change is acceptable...b) Resources and talent are available...c) Leaders, and the organization as a whole, will support the effort...d) The "Risk Profile" is acceptable."

8) "Process Value Analysis: As processes get more complex, they tend to insulate people from the real reason that customers patronize a business. "Value Analysis" is a way of reemphasizing the key raison d'etre of a business or process by looking at work from the external customer's point of view. In the analysis, we assign each process step to one of three categories: 1) Value Adding...2) Value Enabling...3) Non-Value-Adding"

9) "Twelve Keys To Success: 1) The Six Sigma Efforts to Business Strategy and Priorities 2) Position Six Sigma as an Improved Way to Manage for Today 3) Keep the Message Simple and Clear 4) Develop Your Own Path to Six Sigma 5) Focus on Short-Term Results 6) Focus on Long-Term Growth and Development 7) Publicize Results, Admit Setbacks, and Learn from Both 8) Make and Investment to Make It Happen 9) Use Six Sigma Tools Wisely 10) Link Customers, Process, Data, and Innovation to Build the Six Sigma System 11) Make Top Leaders Responsible and Accountable 12) Make Learning an Ongoing Activity"

Great book for learning Six Sigma
By CA_Dan
I bought this book and also bought the audio book version. I listened to the audio while following along in the book. I work in banking, and this book had some relevant examples for mortgage companies - really useful for me. The book isn't a light read, but is more approachable then some of the "heavier" Six Sigma books. There are lots of good charts and diagrams to make the whole concept easier to understand - again, really useful for me as I'm a visual learner. Six Sigma isn't really rocket science, but it is different than some other types of quality control, system improvement, and management books. It can be applied and scaled from a small department to a company-wide effort. This book explains how.

Amazon.com Review
"I thought he was dead. He was sitting with his legs stretched out and his head tipped back against the wall. He was covered with dust and webs like everything else and his face was thin and pale. Dead bluebottles were scattered on his hair and shoulders. I shined the flashlight on his white face and his black suit."

This is Michael's introduction to Skellig, the man-owl-angel who lies motionless behind the tea chests in the abandoned garage in back of the boy's dilapidated new house. As disturbing as this discovery is, it is the least of Michael's worries. The new house is a mess, his parents are distracted, and his brand-new baby sister is seriously ill. Still, he can't get this mysterious creature out of his mind--even as he wonders if he has really seen him at all. What unfolds is a powerful, cosmic, dreamlike tale reminiscent of Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time. British novelist David Almond works magic as he examines the large issues of death, life, friendship, love, and the breathtaking connections between all things.

Amidst the intensity and anxiety of his world, Michael is a normal kid. He goes to school, plays soccer, and has friends with nicknames like Leakey and Coot. It's at home where his life becomes extraordinary, with the help of Skellig and Mina, the quirky, strong-willed girl next door with "the kind of eyes you think can see right through you." Mina and her mother's motto is William Blake's "How can a bird that is born for joy / Sit in a cage and sing?" This question carries us through the book, as we see Michael's baby sister trapped in a hospital incubator; as we see the exquisite, winged Skellig crumpled in the garage; as we meet Mina's precious blackbird chicks and the tawny owls in her secret attic; and as we finally see a braver, bolder Michael spread his wings and fly. Skellig was the Whitbread Award's 1998 Children's Book of the Year, and this haunting novel is sure to resonate with readers young and old. (Ages 10 and older) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly
British author Almond confidently narrates this recording of his first novel for young people. Michael and his family have just moved to a new home, which proves more dramatic than any of them had imagined. The house is a true fixer-upper, and Michael's new baby sister, born prematurely, is seriously ill. While his parents are consumed with worry about the baby, Michael is left alone with his own fears. But when he explores the house's crumbling garage, he discovers a frail creature with wings who becomes a most magical friend. It's hard to say whether the creature, which eventually introduces itself as Skellig, is a man, an angel or a ghost. As Michael and his new neighbor Mina spend time with Skellig, they learn about the transforming power of caring and love as they tend to Skellig's infirmities and cater to his fondness for Chinese takeout. Part mystery, part fantasy, Almond's story is made all the more memorable by his easygoing delivery and distinctive accent. Ages 8-up. (Apr.)

Dreamy, lovely book
By Leona
I had been told for many years to read David Almond's work, and I finally decided to download "Skellig" when finding some books for my new Kindle. I can't believe I didn't read this sooner. I guess this book had been marketed toward younger people, and the story is definitely accessible for older children, but it really is great for anyone of any age.
"Skellig" is dreamlike and mysterious, thoughtful, both visceral and philosophical, beautiful and concise prose. I made myself stretch it out over a few days, but I could see this novel being devoured in just an hour or two. The day after I finished I went and got a hard copy of "My Name is Mina", the "prequel" from the library, and it was equally as excellent.
I recommend this if you like semi-surreal fiction, if you're looking for a book that ponders knowledge and purpose, or if you simply appreciate lovely writing. I feel this is also one of those books that you should read a few different times in your life because can read it differently each time. So if you like it, keep it in your collection!

A Children's Book For Adults
By Anna Midkiff
Don't get confused by Skellig's "Children's Book" label. This story is deep and thought-provoking. Children can certainly read and enjoy it, but many of the subtleties might go unnoticed.

The book's protagonist, Michael, is one of the most instantly sympathetic characters I've ever met in a story. David Almond tells the story gracefully, with few words, ignoring what is not relevant. The result is that the story was somewhat shorter than I'd expected it to be, but no matter. It's still excellent. Skellig, the mysterious birdlike man he befriends, and Mina, the artistic girl next door, are powerful supporting characters. The parents in the story, though minor characters, are nevertheless sympathetic and well-drawn.

Definitely worth a read, especially for readers who enjoyed Madeleine L'Engle's Time Quintet or Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea series.

Honest exploration of conflicting feelings toward family and friends
By laurenpie
A beautiful children's fantasy novel. A gentle, open and honest exploration of a young boy's conflicting feelings regarding his deathly-ill baby sister, his parents, and his friends.

Almond deftly refrains from answering every question (e.g., the exact nature of Skellig) or tediously driving home every symbolism, leaving room for delightful contemplation.

Superb writing throughout. The last paragraph of Chapter Two, in all it's starkness, is absolutely heart-wrenching. The initial discovery of Skellig was heart-pounding, and the closing chapters heart-lifting. I won't soon forget "27 and 53"!

Themes of forgiveness, family love and loyalty, and non-judgmental acceptance of those who don't fit into society's mold.

Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir, by Dave Mustaine, Joe Layden

From his early, crazy days as a founding member of Metallica, Dave Mustaine has seen and experienced everything in the world of rock n’ roll. From his young triumphs and ignominious ouster from the band for his hard-partying ways to his later rule over Megadeth, one of the most successful heavy metal bands of all time, Mustaine tells it all. Outrageously candid and in-your-face, this is classic rock memoir in the vein of Slash, Motley Crue: The Dirt, and Sound of the Beast—an insider’s look at the loud and sordid world of heavy metal.

James Hetfield, with whom many years ago Mustaine founded a band known as Metallica, once observed, with some incredulity, that Mustaine must have been born with a horseshoe up his ass. That’s how lucky he is to be pulling breath after so many close calls. But here’s the thing about having a horseshoe lodged in your rectum: It also hurts like hell. And you never forget it’s there.

Mustaine has battled it all to achieve dizzying heights. From the early, heady days of Metallica, being unceremoniously let go only to become a world-famous rock star—founder, front man, singer, songwriter, and guitarist (and de facto CEO) for Megadeth, one of the most popular bands in heavy metal—Mustaine’s story will inspire, stun, and terrify.

About the Author

Dave Mustaine, widely regarded as the "founding father" of Thrash Metal, almost singlehandedly created the enduring multiplatinum style that launched both Megadeth and Metallica into the public's consciousness. From 1985's Killing Is My Business . . . and Business Is Good to the most recent Endgame, with more than twelve album releases with Megadeth, Mustaine has left a legacy of music that has been described as everything from "poignant" to "insightful" to "angry" to "ironic." Megadeth earned eight Grammy nominations and six platinum certifications. Mustaine lives in San Diego County, California.

An award-winning journalist and bestselling author, Joe Layden has written more than thirty books, including The Last Great Fight, which was named one of the best sports books of 2007 by Sports Illustrated and the American Library Association. Megadeth fans should read this
By Jeff C*
If you are a fan of Megadeth this is an eye opening "tell all" book that you should read. It basically affirms the sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll life style of mega rock stars, and in the process gives us a peek into the psyche of Dave Mustaine at various points in his career.

My only criticism of the book is not about what was written, but about what I wish was written. I was hoping there would be more space in the book devoted to the creative process Dave Mustaine has used to write the amazing catalog of Megadeth music, but unfortunately there is only a tiny fraction of the book devoted to this topic.

A compelling personal story that grips you for the entirety of the crazy ride, but leaves you satisfied!
By Silent Ringleader
If you are interested in first hand accounts of the rock and roll lifestyle, stories of personal growth and victory, humorous anecdotes, or all of the above, this book won't disappoint!

Dave Mustaine is someone I've admired for a long, time - about 20 years. And just like everything else changes in life, my reasons for admiring him changed and grew as he changed and grew. As a teenager, I latched on to the intensity and energy of Rust In Peace and I never let go of my admiration for Mustaine. Through changes in musical direction and band members, frequent drug relapses, an ongoing feud with another band I like (Metallica), etc., I continued to follow, and support (by purchasing CDs and concert tickets) Dave Mustaine and Megadeth. You could say I was a loyal fan. Dedicated in my support. Perhaps even tenacious. And tenacity is one big reason why I admire Dave Mustaine so much. He has accumulated a lifetime of reasons to give up, spiral into an empty, bitter life or simply be dead already. But he's not. He's still here and this is his personal story of second chances, third chances, strife, success and redemption.

Being a fan of Megadeth, I was at least generally familiar with Mustaine's history; so I guess not much of the book surprised me. If you want to paint with very broad brush strokes, you sum up his life story as not dissimilar from many other rock stars. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll - right? But throughout the book, you get this feeling that all the sensational and sometimes caricature-like anecdotes are being shared by someone who is in a better place now - someone who is wise only in the way that *he* can be, because he has learned from the experiences that only *he* has lived. Mustaine's story is a personal story that you can relate to. Even if you've never played a guitar or smoked heroin.

I had the opportunity to meet him briefly in 2001 and again for a little bit longer while in the studio in 2003. When he sat down next to me and asked me "so what's up?" All I could think to myself was "what's up is your Dave Frickin' Mustaine and I'm a nervous fan who's more starstruck than I thought I would be in this situation". But I wasn't just starstruck by my admiration for his musical ability, nor his music business savvy, nor the fact that he seemed to have a great, healthy family, nor even exclusively his tenacity. It was the fact that this guy was simultaneously a success and a failure - he knows what it is like to be truly human. He had often been a bad example as a person who wasn't the easiest to get along with, yet he has in him this inherent good side, a humble side - a vulnerable side, even, that is very refreshing. Considering I can't relate to probably 95% of Mustaine's life experiences, I feel that he is still a completely 100% relatable guy. To me, this autobiography reaffirms my conviction in our shared humanity and reaffirms my faith in God.

All in all a good read but it does really drag in some sections
By A Curious Tongue
Overall a good, fast paced read. Two things really start to drag the book down- first is the well told story of Dave being fired by Metallica. It is obvious that he's never gotten over that rejection and his repeated run ins with members of the band are told with a sense of desperate yearning for acceptance that is in complete contrast from the persona in much of the rest of the book. One the one hand, this is an interesting insight into Dave's psyche- the fragility that lies just beneath the surface, on the other hand it can come across as the whining of a guy that contributed to three songs 30 years ago and like Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite just can't stop living in the past. The second is Dave's finding religion. Its almost as though he is trying to rationalize his decision to himself and it really weighs heavily on the last bit of the book. I hate to focus too much on those two items though as all in all it is a classic memoir of heavy metal mayhem and is certainly worth a read for fans of Megadeth or metal in general.

STONEFIRE DRAGONS BOOK 2
On her first visit to Clan Stonefire, Department of Dragon Affairs inspector Evie Marshall has an ulterior motive--she needs to seduce its clan leader. If she can't seduce him and become his mate, the dragon hunters will kill her. Of course, Evie doesn't know the first thing about seducing a man, let alone a dragon-shifter, but with her life on the line, she's going to have to become a fast learner or die trying.

Bram Moore-Llewellyn has a track record of scaring off DDA inspectors, but when the latest inspector shows up wearing tight clothes and a sexy smile, his inner dragon takes notice. While battling his attraction to the human, he soon finds himself with an impossible choice: he can either break the law to mate the female and risk a backlash from both the dragon hunters and the British government, or he can turn her away and let her die at the hands of the hunters.

Great dynamics!
By McIn
Bram Moore-Llewellyn is the Stonefire Clan Leader. His male clan members get an opportunity to have a sacrifice who is human to bear them young. Unfortunately, not all of the woman survive their pregnancies. The inspectors make sure these human females are treated fairly and that the clan abides by the female's contract.

Bram is strong and dominant and his Dragon is very opinionated with him.

Evie Marshall has been a DDA inspectors for around 7 years. She has now been threatened by the Dragon Hunters. She has a plan to seduce the Clan reader of the Stonefire Dragons so that he will protect her. Bram just get under Evie's skin and makes her temper flair. She always wanted to be a sacrifice for a Dragon Shifter, but unfortunately, she is not compatible.

These two are strong willed characters. I laughed out loud a lot. He is strong and dominant and his Dragon is very opinionated with him.

There is a lot of sex in this series. I am O.K. with that. If you are offended by explicit sexual content... Then this series is not for you.

Great Story and Dragon World
By Katydid
I have bought all 8 stories in the first series and the 3 in the Scots offshoot after reading the Seduced, Healed and Sacrificed to the Dragon books, in that order.

I think I will have jump ahead and read the first Scots series book next because the first twin cousin storyline sounds so interesting. My first 3 books were great. I enjoyed her writing, her characters and the world she has built. Some of the heroines are part of a sacrifice program where women agree to try to have children to repopulate the dragons if they are a genetic match, others are dragons or humans looking for help. The whole sacrifice process is overseen by a sometimes shady government agency. If the women get pregnant they have to stay until the baby is born but can then walk away if they want. The dragons can tell by a kiss if someone is a possible true match, which is true whether the heroine is a dragon or human. If they are a true match, the dragon will have to fight a mating frenzy which doesn't stop until the female is pregnant. Throw in some dragon bad guys and dragon hunters and you have lots of new and interesting situations to enjoy.

Stubbornness to love
By Ruby Hinkleberry
In this book we see the story of Bram, leader of the Stonefire clan. He is known for his strong demeanor and his authority is never questioned. But when DDA agent Evie comes searching for questions, he can't help but to have his guard up. Even if his Dragon is intrigued with the witty woman.

Eddie has always had to be strong. But a threat from Dragon hunters is a bit me than she can take. She decides to risk it all for the sake of safety. Even if it means trying to seduce the clan leader of the dragons. But meeting Bram is completely different than what she expected. He's sexy and oh so Alpha. But the truth can't be hidden for long. And both Evie and Bram are in for quite a surprise.

This book was thrilling and exciting. Steamy and funny. The best of it all. I never wanted to put it down!!
