I can't recommend it highly enough

I have practiced yoga for years but was still in tremendous back and hip pain. Rachel's book showed me all the mistakes I was making and put me on the path to wellness. Nothing short of life changing.
This book is suitable for teachers and students. Beginners and advanced. I can't recommend it highly enough.

So I have not read this book yet but was blessed to have the opportunity to take one of Rachel's classes over the weekend at the San Diego Yoga Festival. I am a yoga teacher myself and Rachel was able to clear up some posture cueing misconceptions that is really essential for keeping a healthy supportive spine. I am really looking forward to diving into this book as I'm sure her class was just a little taste of her knowledge.

One year later, success!

I am a 66 year old nurse practitioner and grandmother. On 7/6/15 I started on the Gut Balance Revolution food plan. I was working in a motorized wheel chair and using crutches for RSD in my left foot and I wore a fracture boot on my left foot because it hurt too much to wear a shoe. I could not go up and down stairs because of sever arthritis in my left knee and continued pain one year after a total knee replacement in my right knee. Today I am 40 lbs lighter, no longer take Naproxen for pain, Metamucil for constipation, or Valium for esophageal spasms. I am out of the wheel chair (I gave it away!), no longer use crutches, and can wear shoes, even heels! I still have RSD with neuropathic pain, but it is significantly improved. I am walking up and down stairs with minimal knee pain. Today I did a hill workout on the treadmill at level 5 for an hour! The Gut Balance Revolution didn't just give me my life back, I feel better than I did in my 20s! I remain at level 2 because if I eat foods off the orogram my pain is much worse. I will be eating like this for the rest of my life! Thank you Dr. Mullin!!!

This is the best book on healthy eating I've read in ages

This is a beautifully written piece of work that has changed my life. I've battled weight problems my entire adult life, doing everything short of the bypass procedures to cure myself. A friend pointed me towards this book and I found it to be an epiphany. Mullin writes with academic rigor (with fully referenced research papers for every claim he makes) but also makes a clear and compelling case for leveraging our gut biomes as a part of dealing with a lot of modern maladies. Since setting out on the journey he outlines in this book, I've lost weight, gained control over my compulsive eating, and seen a steady improvement of my health on fronts ranging from indigestion to depression. STEPPS on how to get YOUR content shared!

Jonah Berger is a professor at the Wharton School of Business. He dropped two books last year, about a month apart, with this one I'm reviewing and Invisible Influence. His work reminds me a little of Malcolm Gladwell and he even references The Tipping Point early in the book.

These kind of books, where the author presents anecdotal evidence and real life stories to illustrate points, are fun to read for me as I enjoy when the author helps you relate with the "stories" presented to validate a point.

Jonah writes to inform us of why things catch on. We see this quite a bit with things going "viral" with social media, but he goes deeper than just the social media aspect of contagiousness.

He provides an easy to follow acronym for outlining what items can help something catch on. This acronym is STEPPS and the books is divided into 6 chapters describing each of the elements. They are as follows:

Social Currency - Being "in-the-know" on something and wanting to share it with others.

Triggers - How one thing will instantly trigger a thought of something else. Peanut butter makes you think of jelly. Coffee and donuts go together, etc.

Emotion - When something inspires us and evokes emotion, we are often inspired to share. Some feelings are more prone to sharing like humor, awe, excitement, and on the negative side, anger and anxiety.

Public - Summed up as social proof. Two restaurants with same cuisine and one has a line out the door and the other one is practically empty. Where would you like dine?

Practical Value - Information that is useful is far more likely to be shared.

Stories - When a good story is told, it will often suck us in, evoke emotion, and prompt us to want to share.

Amazon reviewers give this one a 4.5 after 676 reviews. Goodreads gives it a 3.87 after 11,603 ratings and 1,090 reviews. I thought the book was entertaining but didn't really feel like there was anything revolutionary about the content. Still, if you enjoy psychology and social behaviors along the same lines as Malcolm Gladwell, then you might want to pick it up.

Fascinating read for marketers trying to unlock the secrets to viral success

Jonah Berger's Contagious is a fascinating read. Not only is the book packed with entertaining examples of viral campaigns, but each is backed with painstaking analysis into the science of social transmission. What you end up with is a veritable blueprint for creating ideas, campaigns and messages that spread like wildfire.
There are six essential factors that contribute to contagious ideas, shows Jonah, and a quick look at some of the most successful viral campaigns reveals each of them at work:

Social currency. We share things that make us look good or help us compare favorably to others. Exclusive restaurants utilize social currency all the time to create demand.

Triggers. Ideas that are top of mind spread. Like parasites, viral ideas attach themselves to top of mind stories, occurrences or environments. For example, Mars bar sales spiked when in 1997 when NASA's Pathfinder mission explored the red planet.

Emotion. When we care, we share. Jonah analyzed over six months of data from the New York Times most emailed list to discover that certain high arousal emotions can dramatically increase our need to share ideas - like the outrage triggered by Dave Carroll's "United Breaks Guitars" video.

Public. People tend to follow others, but only when they can see what those others are doing. There is a reason why baristas put money in their own tip jar at the beginning of a shift. Ideas need to be public to be copied.

Practical. Humans crave the opportunity to give advice and offer tips (one reason why advocate marketing works - your best customers love to help out), but especially if they offer practical value. It's why we `pay it forward' and help others. Sharing is caring.

Stories - People do not just share information, they tell stories. And stories are like Trojan horses, vessels that carry ideas, brands, and information. To benefit the brand, stories must not only be shared but also relate to a sponsoring company's products. Thus the epic failure of viral sensations like Evian's roller baby video (50M views) that did little to stem Evian's 25% drop in sales.

There is so much this book offers marketers, making it required reading that follows in the footsteps of Malcolm Gladwell and the Heath brothers. It also perfectly demonstrates why advocate marketing is such a powerful idea for modern marketers. Viral campaigns eschew overt marketing messages by cleverly tapping into consumer wants, desires and emotional needs. Similarly, advocate marketing helps marketers reach audiences through a more effective and trusted means than direct messaging. We share our experiences because that act enhances our personal and professional reputation and makes us feel good. When marketers tap into these very human needs, they can reach a much broader audience with a more genuine message than any advertisement can provide.

About the Author
Dr Angela L. Coe specializes in sedimentology and stratigraphy and has over 20 years of experience of collecting geological field data in Europe, Asia, North and South America. Over this time, she has also designed and taught field geology courses for several UK universities and has led many field trips for international conferences and petroleum companies.

Dr Tom W. Argles is a geologist who has conducted structural and metamorphic fieldwork in several mountain belts (Alps, Himalaya, Betic Cordillera, Caledonides, Basin and Range) for 20 years. He has set up and taught field courses in a range of locations across the UK and Europe

Dr David A. Rothery is a volcanologist and planetary scientist. He has taught geology in the field for 30 years and has research experience of igneous rocks (including active volcanoes) in the Oman, Cyprus, Italy, the Andes, central America, NW USA, Hawaii and Western Australia.

good reading

I like this book. It is very detailed and seems to address every topic well. The chapter that discusses strike and dip is a bit confusing but it is not an easy subject to put into words. When you learn to do it in the field it will be easy. I am able to do strike and dip but do not ask me to teach it with words! This is well worth the money paid and you will learn a lot. Also good for reference.

Decent book, not as good as Compton's.

This is a good book. It is well-organized, has a lot of good info and illustrations. It is, however, NO SUBSTITUTE for Geology in the Field by Compton. This book is almost superfluous next to Compton's.

I really enjoyed reading this novella. I was enthralled with the characters of Nathan Landers and Samantha Willis. Nathan is tall, very handsome, arrogant, freaking sexy, and adorable in the HOTTEST way!! He is a self-made billionaire, owns Landers Innovations—an IT magnate, and is an eligible bachelor. Samantha is a photographer for a magazine and she is taking pictures at a gala with her partner Matilda who writes the articles. Samantha has a proclivity for animals and she would rather take pictures of them instead of people wearing fancy clothes and fake smiles. She also has a tendency of relating people to animals. When Samantha’s gown tears at the seams, she tries to fix it in the restroom; but to no avail, she decides to leave the gala. When Samantha exits the restroom, Nathan Landers comes toward her and kisses her to elude another woman. Nathan invites Samantha to his room to change her gown, and they engage in a conversation concerning animals, which Samantha is an advocate. When Nathan says something that Samantha considers offensive, she throws the glass of wine in his face and leaves. Samantha and Nathan have some serious chemistry between them, building up to what is sure to be a crazy sensual relationship. Then things change, and there are several twists and turns within the storyline with mystery, kidnapping, suspense, sex, sex—did I say SEX that is off the chart hot, and intrigue that makes it very interesting. The scenes are well written, fast-paced and flow smoothly from one scene to the next. This story will pique your interest and draw you in from the beginning to the very end. So do yourself a favor and buy this book, you will not be disappointed.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. I love everything written by this author and this book is no exception. Nathan Landers is a gorgeous, sexy, tenacious billionaire. He goes after what he wants and he seems to want Samantha! Sam 'met' him when he ran up to her and kissed her in the hallway at a gala to keep another woman away from him. After that though, their conversation, where Nathan thought animals were more useful dead earned a glass of wine in the face, Sam didn't want to see him again! But he wanted to see her. It seemed she was different! He started a dog shelter for her. She waffles back and forth with her feelings, jumping to conclusions without getting the facts, even though their chemistry was explosive! There's mystery, kidnapping, some twists you won't expect, all on this journey to a possible HE A and/or a dream job. Enjoy.

Pulitzer-Worthy

Bought the text after seeing a production of the play. This is really powerful stuff--and very timely (one of the characters is an Iraqi War vet). One especially clever writing technique is having the characters from a "chat room" speak what they are posting--but without any obvious/literal typing on a keyboard. In performance, this allows the actors to look at each other, and interact (sometimes, quite closely). As you read the play, it's easy to "miss" this, and forget that these people are miles apart--both physically and psychologically. Despite the many heartbreaking themes, there is considerable humor--again, easy to miss if you are not attuned to irony/sarcasm. And, although the play is painful, it ends on notes of hope and optimism.

deserving Pulitzer Prize in Drama winner

A superb play and winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Hudes won the Tony Award for best musical for "In the Heights" in 2008. She was also nominated for the Pulitzer in Drama for "Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue" - the main character in that play is a significant figure in this one.

The story centers around a Puerto Rican family scattered around Philadelphia. Elliot is an Iraq Vet with a limp who works at a Subway Shop. Yazmin is his cousin and close confident - she recently started working as an Adjunct Professor in music. His birth mother is Odessa, a recoverying crack addict. He was not raised by her, but rather his Aunt, Mami Ginny.

Odessa runs a website where recoverying crack addicts from around the world check in and give each other support. Elliot has a hard time reconciling this reformed version of her from his childhood experiences.

The dialogue is excellent, and the story moves along well. There is conflict, wrestling with demons and one of the finest eulogies to be found in literature.

Complex and satisfying

This play is a lovely read. The characters a well-developed, each with human flaws but a sense of hope surrounding each of them. This play explores relationships within a blood families, as well as relationships within an online chat room family of recovering crack addicts. Each character struggles with forgiveness of self and forgiveness of others. At the end of the play, each character has to go down the road that is right for him/her - and the choice for each person varies depending on their own needs. It's a complex look at life that does not have the neat and tidy Disney ending, but ends in a way that is satisfactory. Most characters grow and change as they face the situations of the play. An extremely satisfying read.
