About the Author

Jane Krauss is a teacher, author and consultant who does curriculum and program development designed to increase participation of girls and other underrepresented groups in computer science. She will gladly tell you why computational thinking is the fundamental literacy of our technical age!

Jane also writes and offers professional development internationally around the topic of project-based learning with technology. With Suzie Boss, she is coauthor of Reinventing Project-Based Learning: Your Field Guide to Real World Projects in the Digital Age (2nd ed., 2014, ISTE) and Thinking Through Project-Based Learning: Guiding Deeper Inquiry (2013, Corwin).

In her free time, Jane enjoys dabbling in glasswork and mosaics, and keeps fit running and hiking on woodland trails just outside her door in Eugene, Oregon.

Suzie Boss is a writer and educational consultant who focuses on the power of teaching and learning to improve lives and transform communities. She is the author of several popular books for educators, including Bringing Innovation to School, Reinventing Project-Based Learning (co-authored with Jane Krauss), and Setting the Standard for Project Based Learning (co-authored with John Larmer and John Mergendoller). She is a regular contributor to Edutopia and the Stanford Social Innovation Review, and a member of the Buck Institute for Education National Faculty. She has helped project-based learning take hold at schools in India, Europe, Mexico, and South America, as well as all over the United States. Beyond the regular school day, she has developed programs that teach youth and adults how to improve their communities with innovative, sustainable solutions.

Her wide-ranging interests in education were shaped by several years as a writer, editor, and field researcher for the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (now Education Northwest), and earlier experiences as a community college instructor and journalist. She lives in Portland, Oregon, where she enjoys exploring the outdoors, playing tennis, and spending time with her husband and two grown sons.

Innovative approach to learning

Co-authors Krauss and Boss are on the cutting edge of exploring new approaches to learning. Any book that demonstrates innovative and successful methods of teaching to counteract the often dreary techniques that are engrained in too many classrooms is a worthy read.

Anthony Giordano is an experienced executive with more than 25 years of global professional services experience in the information management field in the areas of business intelligence, data warehousing, customer relationship management, and program management. He has significant work experience in the financial services, life sciences, and automotive sectors. Mr. Giordano has functioned in various roles, including positions such as IBM Japan BAO Service Line Leader, Financial Services Practice Partner, and other consulting roles. He has extensive international experience in Australia, Thailand, Turkey, England, and living in Japan. Tony has been dedicated to implementing customer-focused business analytics and information management platform that deliver business outcomes.

In his role at Merkle, Tony is responsible for the Technology Solutions Group, which defines designs, develops, and deploys the Foundation Marketing Platform’s that Merkle’s customer run their multi-channel campaigns and marketing analytics.

Tony joins Merkle from IBM’s Business Analytics and Optimization Practice, where he spent 18 years in a variety of senior-level positions. Most recently, Tony led IBM’s BAO Japan Service Line. He also held IBM’s BAO Global Leader for Banking and Financial Markets, Enterprise Information Management Service Line for North America, and Financial Services BAO Partner roles. Prior to IBM and PricewaterhouseCooper’s, Tony held consulting roles in Oracle.

In a perfect world, this book would be average. In today's REAL world, it's trash.

I understand the reason for the existence of a book like this. But the execution is ... wow. It is full of buzz words and vague descriptions of ideal situations that just don't exist in real life. I feel that this book was made by an hands-off executive level manager who may have been technical 25 years ago, and still thinks he is. But he really has no idea about how to implement the ivory tower ideas in this book. They are not fit for the "real world". But what you learn in this book would make great buzzword bingo, or conversational topics at the golf course with a few other executive level folks who are out of touch with today's technology challenges.

Makes a usually dry topic interesting !!!

Information Governance isn't a topic I'd normally enjoy reading about (in fact I've been known to describe the topic in the past as "dry as dust"). But as an Information Management professional it is a topic that it is my responsibility to know about. The problem is that most of the books on the topic are very abstract, and I like a practical approach to any topic.

Having found Anthony Giordano's previous book on Data Integration helpful, I decided to give this one a try. And I'm glad I did. I started reading it with a feeling of "let's get this over with". But I found that the way the author dealt with the topic in practical real world terms meant that I wanted to keep on reading. It probably helped that at the same time I was dealing with some real issues in this area and the book was speaking to a direct need.

I found the discussion of roles especially useful, especially the different options for aligning these roles within various business organisations and strategies for getting the buy in to support these roles. I'm now using the book as a guide in trying to establish a data stewardship role within a particular business unit within a client.

So I'd thoroughly recommend this book. Maybe not a page turner, but definitely full of useful practical advice.

About the Author
Kimberly Jansma directs the French Language Program at The University of California at Los Angeles, where she supervises teaching instructors and teaches language, culture, and linguistics courses. She has published pedagogical texts and multimedia materials and presents her research at major conferences. Dr. Jansma's areas of interest include hybrid language instruction, second language acquisition, and sociolinguistics. She received her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin.

Margaret Ann Kassen is associate professor and language program coordinator in the Department of Modern Languages at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where she teaches undergraduate French and applied linguistics courses, as well as works with graduate and undergraduate teacher preparation. Her research interests include foreign language writing, performance assessment, technology-enhanced language learning, and TA development. In addition to presenting at conferences, Dr. Kassen has published articles on technology and writing and edited a volume on developing self-direction in foreign language learners. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.

Don't really like the style of introducing new French words and phrases ...

Don't really like the style of introducing new French words and phrases with minimal translations. They want you to pick up the meaning based on the pictures that accompany the lists of new words, rather than explicitly say "robe = dress." This works for about half the words, but the other half I don't understand the nuance between, for example, the French words for a man's shirt versus a woman's shirt. If you show me two pictures of shirts, and call them different things, I need to know why explicitly, not just the two different pictures.

Probably a good book if you're taking a class with a native professor who can explain these things to you, but not a good book at all for learning on your own.

The above article written by Henry Mintzberg in 1975 provides a thoughtful analysis of what managers do as part of their daily routine and exposes the pretensions on myths about managers and how they work. The author also gives us an insight on what roles managers play and what skills are required to be a successful manager.

The main idea behind this article is to provide a clear insight into managerial roles and responsibilities and how they correlate to the challenges and opportunities that manifest in front of a manager. In order to successfully execute the his/her roles and responsibilities a manager is required to acquire skills to foster interpersonal relationships, ability to negotiate, motivate their staff, resolve conflicts, acquire and share information, make decisions.

According to the author an ethical decision clearly has two options, right v/s wrong, whereas a defining moment forces one to choose between two ideals, right and - right. While ethical decisions are easy to make, a defining moment challenge us to choose between two or more ideals.

The main idea behind this article can be summarized as follows, "Professional responsibilities conflict with our values and during these defining moments one must choose between right and right." The article explains three types of defining moments, "Who am I?", "Who are we?" and "Who is the company?" and educates readers by helping them learn skills to identify these three types so that they will be able to effectively navigate the right v/s right decisions they face throughout their career. Such skills, although not part of a manager's job description enable them to build an identity in the organization based on their own understand of what is right. Various sections of the author's article, written in 1998, encourage readers to take a step back and evaluate this conflict not as a dilemma but as an expected tension between two or more valid perspectives.

`Managers and Leaders: Are They Different' by Abraham Zaleznik
The above article written by Abraham Zaleznik in 1977 makes a case against modern management by enumerating the similarities and differences between managers and leaders. The author argues that managers and leaders differ in their personalities and viewpoints on how they manage order and chaos within an organization. The article discusses how traditional organizational structures and processes have influenced managers to focus exclusively on traits like control, power and competence in order to be successful. This management school of thought discouraged managers to be creative, develop inter-personal traits and build relationships with their team.

The main idea behind this article can be summarized as follows, "Managers are born out of an organization structure and operate on a pre-defined set of processes and control mechanisms, and therefore they have a very good understanding of the business and their job at hand. Managers play an important role in any organization and always solve problems by giving orders and seek stability by controlling and persuading their subordinates to align with organizational goals, processes and procedures. In contrast, Leaders always relate themselves to people and are often idea centric and sometimes deviate from traditional approaches towards solving organizational problems."

Great collection

There are way too many leadership titles available out there, so I've found it wise to stay with trusted sources and material that has withstood the test of time. HBR does a great job at collecting the best articles and essays in a lot of topics, all good, and I refer to this one frequently. Re-reading articles in this volume helps me keep perspective as I look over the myriad titles that appear every week. Sound principles like those in this book make me a better consultant and trainer, and as an adjunct business prof I use several articles in here with my classes. Very happy to have this.

Some real gems included in this book

This is a book regarding leadership and management using some of the most popular essays written for the HBR in the last 30 years. I enjoyed a few of the essays immensely, especially about the difference between management and leadership. It's a short book so spending your valuable time on this one is well worth it and I certainly appreciated the work from the writers. My favorite essay was included as chapter one and it referred to the many roles of today's managers. Amazing work and extremely gratifying since I am a manager. In summary, well worth your time to increase your skills.

Copleston set out to redress the wrong by writing a complete history of Western philosophy, one crackling with incident and intellectual excitement -- and one that gives full place to each thinker, presenting his thought in a beautifully rounded manner and showing his links to those who went before and to those who came after him.

The result of Copleston's prodigious labors is a history of philosophy that is unlikely ever to be surpassed. About the Author
Frederick Copleston (1907-1994) grew up in England. He was raised in an Anglican home but converted to Catholicism while a student at Marlborough College. He later became a Jesuit and then pursued a career in academia. He studied and lectured at Heythrop College and wrote an eleven-volume History of Philosophy, which is highly respected. He also spent time teaching at Gregorian University in Rome and, after he retired, lectured at Santa Clara University in California. He was appointed a member of the British Academy in 1970. He is famous for debating Betrand Russell over the existence of God in a 1948 BBC broadcast.

About the Author
Karen Loft Hess (November 11, 1918–May 15, 2007) was an American culinary historian. Her 1977 book The Taste of America, co-authored with her late husband, John L. Hess, established them as antiestablishment members of the culinary world.

In 1985, Hess became one of the founding members of the Culinary Historians of New York, an association of food professionals, historians, and others interested in studying and writing on the history of food. On October 19, 2004, the Culinary Historians of New York presented her with their first annual Amelia Award, an award which recognizes excellence in culinary history.

In 2006, she was listed in the eighth annual Saveur 100, from Saveur Magazine, in an article by Shane Mitchell entitled "The Grandest Dame of American Culinary History." Mitchell says that although Hess came from Nebraska, her "soul must be Southern." Hess's The Carolina Rice Kitchen is the story of how rice from Africa became a South Carolina Low Country staple, as well as how the African cooks shaped Southern cooking.

This book is very hard to understand. I would not recomend to anyone looking for a "cookbook". On the other hand it's a wonderfully expained history of what food was used and how it was cooked in the Tudor era.

one of the best historical cookbooks ever

This book is a jewel. Being a 16th-17th century reenactor, I would not have thought that Martha Washington's cookbook would have become such a favorite of mine. The annotations by Karen Hess make it invaluable to anyone interested in historical cookery from the Elizabethan age onwards, and it is a darned good read, informative and fun even if you aren't. This is the book I will give someone who thinks they might possibly be vaguely interested in historical cookery and would like to learn more. It is very well-researched and there is something to learn on every page. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

For the love of books and bookstores, long may they endure

My abiding love affair with books began some thirty-five years ago when as a young child, I accompanied my mom to a used bookstore. We lived on a tight budget and books were considered a luxury, but my mother, bless her heart, would save up to take me book shopping (we didn't have a public library close by) at the local used bookstore, which was really more a room that had been let to the bookstore owner. I remember being in raptures when I was able to find Nancy Drew hardcovers for bargain prices like 50 cents. Those bookstore visits inspired a lifelong affinity for books, especially old books, found in dusty nooks and crannies in used bookstores, and I have never stopped acquiring and collecting books since, and THE BOOKSHOP BOOK is one that all bibliophiles like me can easily relate to.

THE BOOKSHOP BOOK by Jen Campbell captures the love of books by focusing on bookshops around the world and among the famous and easily recognizable names such as The Tattered Cover in Denver, CO and Shakespeare and Company in Paris, there are lesser known, yet no less beloved bookstores in various regions around the world. The author also includes impressions of authors and their opinions of their favorite bookstores, as well as interesting "Bookish Facts" that make this an engaging read.

I read this book in one sitting, no mean feat considering my busy schedule, but I was that engrossed. I plan to re-read it too and make notes. There are treasures to be unearthed within such as titles of books that had escaped my attention previously, names of bookstores that I would definitely like to look up such as the Alabama Booksmith and more.

If you love books, the tangible and intangible pleasures of book selling and book buying, then this book is definitely a must-read.

Independent bookstores still scatter the earth...can this possibly be?!

As an online bookseller, I basked for days in the light of this book, following Jen Campbell around the world as she visited a seeming unending number of "brick and mortar" independent book stores. A few of the stores that she shares about are now closed (I was sad but hardly surprised.) However, the vast majority of the stores she "visits" are open and dare I say thriving?! (I was thrilled and very surprised by this fact.) In fact, I had to revisit the publication page to confirm that yes, indeed, this book was published in 2014 and that many of these stores have opened since 2000. I smiled every night as I read, remembering my life long dream to have a "brick and mortar" bookstore, coffee shop, gathering place for booksellers and lefty political activists. My husband was scared witless by my nighttime smiling episodes, afraid that one morning I would wake and up and declare that "Yes! There was room in our smallish town for another struggling bookshop." We have two at present and he thanks his lucky stars that I have been content to sell online for, lo, these many years. Still, Jen Campbell's book gave me that sense of warm, long ago hope in my gut and allowed me to hear whispers of "maybe....maybe" once again. Read this book if you love books, bookstores and, especially, if you've ever bought books rather than food. You are the person who will love this book as much as I do.....

Fascinationg Little Book

I loved the title & premise of the Bookshop Book and it did not disappoint. I never write reviews but perhaps I should. The author describes book shops that are all over the world, how the bookshops look, the types of books some owners carry, the quirkiness of both the owners of the bookshop and the setting of each bookshop visited from hobbit size places to large & modern "shops." Halfway through the book, I googled bookshops in my state and now have a large list of shops to visit. The concern of e-books versus regular books is mentioned and after reading Ms. Campbell's and other bookstore owners thoughts I am no longer worried about disappearing bookstores. This book is interesting, has a few fun tidbits tucked inside and well worth reading. I am a reading addict and now, armed with new places to visit I hope to never recover!

About the Author

Ruth McCall received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and her medical technology certificate after a year’s internship at Saint Joseph’s School of Medical Technology in Phoenix, Arizona, and has worked or taught in the area of Clinical Laboratory Sciences and Health Care Education since 1969. Ruth recently retired as Director of the Phlebotomy and Clinical Laboratory Assistant Programs after 18 years of teaching in the Health, Wellness and Public Safety Department at Central New Mexico (CNM) Community College (formerly TVI Community College). While at CNM Ruth proposed creation of the Clinical Laboratory Assistant Program, was instrumental in its development, and was responsible for it becoming one of the first programs at CNM offered entirely through distance education. Ruth participated with science instructors from a local high school in a program that introduced the students to health careers and was the first CNM phlebotomy instructor to teach phlebotomy to high school students through concurrent enrollment. She has lectured on phlebotomy at conferences throughout the United States, served as an expert witness in phlebotomy injury cases, and especially enjoyed participating in a medical technology exchange trip to China. Most recently Ruth had the privilege of being a member of the CLSI Working Group on Venipuncture charged with the 6th revision of the H3 Venipuncture Standard, and the CLSI Working Group on Skin Puncture charged with the 6th revision of the H4 Capillary Puncture Standard.

Ruth loves the outdoors. She enjoys hiking in the beautiful southwest and downhill skiing in the mountains of Colorado and New Mexico. She has even tried her hand at paragliding. She has been married for over 40 years to her husband, John, and has two sons, Christopher and Scott. Christopher and his wife Tracy are parents of her fantastic grandchildren, Katie and Ryan.Cathee Tankersley recently retired as Faculty Emeritus after 27 years of teaching at Phoenix College in the Health Enhancement Department. She has worked or taught in the area of Clinical Laboratory Sciences and Health Care Education since graduating from New Mexico State University in Medical Technology in 1964. Cathee has been active in many professional organizations since she became a medical technologist. She has served on many committees at the state and national level. While at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, she was the Director of the Medical Technology Program during her last two years at that facility. Her tenure at Phoenix College has been as Clinical Coordinator for the MLT Program, Director of the EKG and EEG Programs, and as the Phlebotomy Program Director from 1982 until 2006. While at PC, she established one of the first accredited phlebotomy programs in the United States. In 2000, she developed and directed the first and only college-based Law Enforcement Phlebotomy Program in the United States.She served on the initial National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) Phlebotomy Certification Committee as chair from 1983 to 1985. She was one of the original six members of the National Accrediting gency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) Approval Committee for Phlebotomy Programs in 1985. She went on to serve as the chair of that committee from 1993 to 1995. Since 1997 when she established her company, NuHealth Educators, LLC, she has been a health care educator and consultant for several organizations. She has served as an expert witness in the area of phlebotomy techniques and has lectured at numerous conferences across the United States. Cathee continues to teach part time at Phoenix College in healthcare education and the Law Enforcement Phlebotomy (LEP) program. She works with the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to maintain current curricular materials for law enforcement phlebotomy. Ruth and Cathee have collaborated for over 20 years on textbook writing and as presenters at natonal and state conferences.

Family is very important to Cathee. Her husband of 45 years, Earl; their two children, Todd and Jaime; daughter-in-law, Chris; and two wonderful grandsons, Trevor and Connor, help her keep everything in perspective.

This book has everything you need to know about phlebotomy and more (literally; my teacher says it's got way more stuff than you will ever need to know at one time, but it's all valid… if that makes any sense).

Some of the chapters seem a little outdated (who isn't familiar with a computer in 2015?), but that will be updated in the next edition, I'm sure.

As to the test ( isn't that what we're all preparing for?), I have NO CLUE what's on it, but I would imagine if you studied this book AND the workbook along with good training, you would be adequately prepared. This book has clear diagrams, tables, and charts, including what tubes are used for what tests, which is handy. Good Luck in your endeavors.

Update: 5/20/15 I was giving this book five stars, but I realize upon second reading that there are parts of it that are just gobbledygook. Like chapter one, for example. Too many acronyms, and not enough background or examples on the different types of managed care organizations. Why not just give real-world examples of each and not leave us scratching our heads trying to keep them all straight. It seems like a case of editing gone mad. Someone cut out the parts that made it make any sense to a real human being. Here's an idea, cut out the computer literacy part where you tell us what a printer is, and make that up by clarifying chapter one. Oh, and btw, I'm a straight A student, so it's not because I'm illiterate...

I purchased this book for my wife who was in school for phlebotomy. She used this throughout her class and she also used it to take the certification/exam and she passed. She says the book was informative, relevant, and up to date. I recommend this book and think it was a good buy as I have no regrets to purchasing it.
