My son said its just as good as the class he took at the Community College. But better. He said the explanations are easier to understand. He missed all 5 tests by 4 - 5 questions. He wanted to make sure the next time he aced it. He feels confidence he will next March.

Wife has PASSED!

My wife passed her Test. She went from a 340 to a 410. I bought it for her because other reviews said that this BOOK is great for its explanation and methodology. Well about 2 months later she felt REALLY PREPARED. Now my wife is ready to LEARN SOME REAL SKILLS. And don't worry that this book is from 2001 or so... Remember math hasn't changed much since the guys that first used. Egyptians and Greeks.

I used this book to tutor a 28 year old who had always been afraid of doing math - the book is simple yet comprehensive - on some subjects there could be a little more "color commentary" in descriptions - all in all an excellent companion for any high school student struggling with math - just know your grade school multiplication tables and simplest grade school math skills -follow instructions - do the tests in pencil - repeat tests often until GED Mathematics (Steck-Vaughn Ged Series)you consistently score 80-90% - you'll do fine on your GED Math test... In 1960, a woman noticed the birds had stopped singing and their population had severely decreased in her neighborhood. She summoned a friend, biologist/writer Rachel Carson, to investigate this wildlife mystery. Subsequently, in 1962, Rachel's discoveries and efforts were brought to the forefront in her book, Silent Spring, which revealed the atrocities of pesticide poisoning. The over-spraying of DDT, dieldrin and other pest killers was poisoning the entire world of living things, humanity included. Rachel's work not only left chemical companies casting about trying to discredit her findings, but, most importantly, prompted an enormous environmental movement which continues today. About the Author
Rachel Carson (1907–1964) spent most of her professional life as a marine biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. By the late 1950s, she had written three lyrical, popular books about the sea, including the best-selling The Sea Around Us, and had become the most respected science writer in America. She completed Silent Spring against formidable personal odds, and with it shaped a powerful social movement that has altered the course of history.

A True Mystery Story

Silent Spring is as relevant today as it was 50 years ago. Our ground, our air, our food and we are bombarded with chemicals, carcinogens, products of all sorts to kill weeds and bugs and are capable of killing us. Rachel Carson, a biologist and talented writer, walks us through a litany of misuse and overuse of chemicals that have never been tested for safety to humans. Laws are on the books requiring this testing to be done, but it is disregarded because they make our grass greener, our bugs keel over dead and a lot of people rich. Carson is known best for revealing the reason that Bald Eagle eggs had such thin shells that they broke well before the required incubation before hatching. The drastic reduction is successful Eagle births was DDT. Because this is our national bird and is supported by activists in and out of government, DDT was banned and the eagles began producing young again. We have not been so lucky. This book is factual in a clear and understandable way, and it informs us of the human actions and choices that put us all at risk. No alarmist language is employed, but facts lead us to conclusions that are concerning. The stunning fact to me is that the book was written fifty years ago, and the same risks to humanity and our future are being taken today when we could find better ways of solving problems, more cautious ways of using chemicals and restricting their use in sensible ways. As I talk to people about the issues raised in this book, they have not heard of Rachel Carson and have heard nothing of the assured negative effects on our own health from the chemicals we expose ourselves to daily. We knew so much back then when Carson wrote this book. Why hasn't more been researched and shared with us, so we can have current knowledge of the facts and risks. It is important that Carson's writing not be buried on a dusty shelf. It is a real mystery story and we are the cast.

This book CHANGED THE WORLD!

Anyone who believes the environment should be respected MUST read this book.

It's beautifully written in a very gentle style. The facts surrounding DDT contamination are clearly and carefully laid out, and the reader is allowed the freedom to draw personal conclusions.

Reading "Silent Spring" was an interesting experience: I was reminded several times that this single book changed the world by raising public awareness of chemical pollution. This new awareness in turn gave rise to the modern environmental movement. I grew up in the 60s; what people take for granted now was revolutionary then, and Rachel Carson was a key initiator of those changes.

Great, comprehensive book...

...with a great layout that makes it engaging and easy to read. However, the scan-codes don't work with an iPhone, which was really disappointing, nor did some of the codes work when put directly into a computer's web browser. I bought the updated version of the book precisely because of the scan codes, so I was pretty bummed. Coulda saved 10 or 15 bucks. Otherwise, definitely recommend the book.

Video links don't work

Finally started reading it.

Looks good so far content wise, but the QR codes, for which I had to download a Microsoft app on my iPhone (stupid design, should have been the standard QR code), no longer work - video content taken down. The links don't work either. Why would the publisher take them down if the book is still being sold... dumb.

I searched a bit and it seems they haven't worked for several years.

One hardly needs to reinterpret history to conclude that some of Henry VIII's wives were manipulated and victimized by a male-dominated society; most historians see that as a given. In her apparent determination to find something new under the sun, Lindsey sacrifices both objectivity and credibility. Virtually every important event is filtered through her feminist prism. Ann Boleyn may not have been the "great whore" of popular lore, but Lindsey's portrayal of her as a victim of sexual harassment on a grand scale is a bit much. Still, this book has value. In examining these women as flesh-and-blood humans rather than pawns in a chess game of power politics, Lindsey has performed a useful service. Her portrait of Henry's first and perhaps most tragic wife, Catherine of Aragon, is particularly poignant. This is a generally enjoyable and informative work, considering the self-imposed constraints the author worked under. Jay Freeman

Enjoyable read

This book was an enjoyable and easy read, I only wish Lindsey had chosen to add notes. She gave good reasons as to why she did not: "Because notes can distract the reader, and because this book focuses on reinterpretation of accepted facts rather than on disputing the facts themselves, I have avoided using notes." P.217
However I like to seperate out fact to have the option to form my own opinion.

There were points in the book where Lindsey made it clear that emotions or thoughts were being speculated about: "[Catherine] must have wondered, bitterly, if the new king of Scots would one day be king of England". However at other times it is not clear: "Jane Grey, miserably unhappy in her new marriage...was now queen." Without notes I'm wondering how we know Lady Grey was unhappy.

Karen Lindsey does offer me assistance with my thirst for knowledge; there is a good bibliography so I will do my own further reading. Overall an enjoyable read, with some excellent food for thought.

A Great Read

As a non-scholar, I don't know if the author's thesis holds up. However, she offers us a view of Henry that deserves to be heard. It's hard to argue with her view of each wife that is contrary to the presentation we are given. Her treatment of Anne Boleyn certainly makes us rethink this relationship and see Boleyn as she deserves to be seen: more as victim of a man she did not dare deny than a calculated seductress. As modern history and congenital story telling, the book certainly holds up quite well.

The title makes it sound like an author forcing 21st century feminism on the politics of 16th century life. It's nothing like that. Though there is interjection of feminism in certain fashions it it much more removed and speculative then trying to explain away actions of people who wouldn't even know the word. Feminists existed but in a society where men dominated every aspect of life they hardly knew what they were. This book attemps to say simply that be a simple recount of history. Good read especially for people who like a less academic language in their historical leisure reading.

It's not called "Basic Principles" for nothing

There are two ways to teach semiconductor physics. The first is to start from first principles (as much as is possible) of quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, etc., and derive for the reader the basic relationships and equations that the rest of the text relies on. The second is to gloss over the underlying fundamentals and move straight into practical applications. This author takes the first approach, and his text smells more of mathematical formalism than engineering. If that works for you, then fantastic, but fortunately the text does not lean too heavily on the reader having such a background, as most of the material can be learned with just the results the author derives.

Good Book

I'm currently using this book for a class in solid state electronics and I feel this covers the topics very well. There are lots of examples throughout the book with problems given right after them, which are similar to the examples. I really liked this because I felt that it gives readers an opportunity to practice and understand the material better as they read through it. So far we have found one mistake in one of the problems, but its just a typo and its easy to figure out what's meant. I've heard that the previous editions had several mistakes that have been corrected in this one, the 4th edition, so if you can afford it, you might want to consider getting this one. I haven't read the whole book, and don't intent to, but from what I've read so far, I've felt that everything was clear and flowed well. There are derivations given for most of the formulas used in the book. I usually skip over them, but if you'd like to study them, they're there.

Absolutely Wonderful Book!

This book was part of my university studies and it was an absolutely wonderful book to learn from. It also makes a great resource tool for those who need the fundamental knowledge of quantum mechanics and energy diagrams for semiconductor devices. The book is well written and consists of many supporting diagrams which help aid in the understanding of the descriptions. You learn about basic quantum mechanics, simple material science and device physics (which includes band diagrams of different materials from homogeneous to heterojunctions).

I definitely recommend this book to people who seek interest in this area!

I have read MANY how-to books on the subject, taken courses and toured many operating wineries. I rate Jeff Cox's "From Vines to Wines" as the best entry level book around, and I rate Yair Margalit's Handbook as positively the best I've seen for winemakers with some experience behind them. Yair is a PhD, so stand by for some heavy chemistry, but it does not get in the way of understanding this marvelous little book. This is truly HANDS ON stuff with nothing left out! I found Yair's straight-forward style just the ticket for untangling complex winemaking concepts and clearing up my understanding of some pretty difficult wine technology. He definitely added to my expertise and affected the way I will approach winemaking in the future. If you're interested in fine tuning your winemaking technique, get this book!

This is a very chemically oriented book on winemaking. I would think that readers without some knowledge of chemistry could
get lost in some portions. Having said that, it is also a very precise book with lots of well thought out steps. Every wine
maker (even non-professionals) can pick up some good information in this book.

This book starts off by assuming the reader knows no programming, has never seen a variable or a loop. If you are in that position, and you want to go from being a non-programmer to developing full Access applications, you would be able to get there using this book.

If you already know how to write code, and want to know how to work with the mess that is Access VBA, this book is still worth reading as when Korol is writing on this, she writes well. You can simply skip the first half that works through more basic programming.

The book is well written and very good for the person who knows Access. This is not a book for the beginning Access User, as the book states in Introduction. This book would be a second or third level book. This book gets into desktop and web programming. If you
know Access, I would purchase this book along with Access Bible for Desktop applications or Access 2013 inside out for Web application. I purchased both.

I found this book to be very interesting. The author takes great pains to explain from the ground up what to expect when writing different applications. Even if you are a seasoned programmer you may find little tips and suggestions she explains to be helpful.
It took many weeks for this book to show up. Otherwise the book was well packaged and exactly what was described and I am pleased with it.

Great hands-on book, worst index ever.

Great hands-on book. Worst index ever. Otherwise, it would get five stars.

Publishers: look at Microsoft Access 2013 Bible for an example of a useful index. An index to a technical book should not be an afterthought. An index is essential to the usefulness of a book directed toward entry-level users/programmers.

Here's an example: the index entry for "Class" has two entries: "Module," and "Naming." Yeah, that's what I was stuck on, how to name it.

Unfortunate, because the hands-on aspect of the book is outstanding.

About the Author
Carolyn Saarni received her PhD from the University of California at Berkeley, specializing in developmental psychology. She began her academic career at New York University, but after a number of years returned to the West Coast. Since 1980, she has been on the faculty of the Department of Counseling at Sonoma State University in California, where she trains prospective marriage, family, child, and school counselors. Professor Saarni's research has focused on how children learn that they can adopt an "emotional front," that is, what they express emotionally need not match what they really feel. She has also investigated how children use this knowledge strategically in their interpersonal relations with others as well as when coping with aversive feelings. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the Spencer Foundation, among others. In addition to Lying and Deception in Everyday Life (with Dr. Michael Lewis), Dr. Saarni's other edited volumes include The Socialization of Emotion (also with Dr. Michael Lewis) and Children's Understanding of Emotion (with Dr. Paul L. Harris). She has also written numerous chapters and articles on children's emotional development. Dr. Saarni is a licensed clinical psychologist and is regularly consulted by the popular media on topics concerning emotional development in children and youth.

Elegant and thoughtful...

...and sometimes hard to penetrate, this book is Prof. Saarni's most complete statement of how children develop emotional competence. She grounds the book in developmental psychology, and listens very carefully to children as they state or "explain" how they think and feel. Her theory is largely constructionist, but also is framed by neo-Piagetian theory.
She outlines the development of 8 skills that make up for and "create" emotional competence: (1) Awareness of one's own emotions, (2) Ability to discern and understand others' emotions, (3) ability to use the vocabulary of emotion and expression, (4) capacity for empathic involvement, (5) ability to differentiate internal experience from external expression, (6) capacity for coping with aversive emotions and distressing circumstances, (7) awareness of emotional communication in relationships, and (8) capacity for emotional self-efficacy.
While this is a lot (!) and her writing is very precise, I loved her descriptions of children and their thinking and feeling. I left this book with a sense of someone who genuinely cares for children and their development. She listens very carefully.
I think clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and school psychologists or guidance counselors will get a lot from this book, but there is nothing "practical" or "applied" in her descriptions of children. This is a book on normal social and emotional development, not intervention. Nevertheless, much of the recent interest in social emotional learning must rest on the concepts she presents, so the book's usefulness is apparent.

About the Author
Lyle C. Brown is professor emeritus of political science at Baylor University, where he served as departmental director of graduate studies and director of Baylor's Foreign Service Program. His international academic experience includes teaching at Mexico City College (now University of the Americas) and postgraduate study at the Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico. He received his M.A. from the University of Oklahoma and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Brown served as president of the Southwest Council of Latin American Studies. His writing experience includes coediting Religion in Latin American Life and Literature and authoring numerous articles.

Joyce Langenegger teaches government at Blinn College and is the college's director of professional development. She received M.A. and J.D. degrees from Baylor University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Fielding Graduate University. Dr. Langenegger has been named to "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" and received a NISOD Award for Teaching Excellence, Teacher of the Year for Blinn College-Bryan, and "Most Valuable Player" award from San Jacinto College for her work as a professor and administrator at that institution. She is a frequent workshop presenter on innovative teaching strategies. Before beginning her teaching career, she practiced law in Houston.

Sonia Garcia, Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara, is Chair of the Political Science Department at St. Mary's University. She has published articles on Latina politics and is a co-author of MEXICAN AMERICANS & THE LAW: EL PUEBLO UNIDO JAMÁS SERÁ VENCIDO (2004). Sonia also is the lead author of POLITICAS: LATINA PUBLIC OFFICIALS IN TEXAS (2007), which examines the first Mexican-American women elected to public office in Texas from various levels of offices.

Ted Lewis, Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin, is Vice President of Academic Affairs at Pellissippi State Community College. He has taught government and political science at the college level for nearly 30 years. He was previously dean of instruction at Loan Star College-Cyfair and Professor, Chair of the Political Science Department, and Director of the Learning Communities Program at Collin County Community College. Dr. Lewis has conducted workshops on Texas election procedure for the Texas Secretary of State and has served as a county party chairperson, on state political party executive committees, and on several statewide candidate campaign advisory committees. He has delivered numerous national presentations and has published articles in such journals as the Community College Journal of Research and Practice, the Journal of the League for Innovation in the Community College, and the National Social Science Journal. He is listed in both WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN POLITICS and WHO'S WHO AMONG AMERICA'S TEACHERS.

Robert E. Biles, professor emeritus and former chair of political science at Sam Houston State University, has taught college students about Texas politics in Texas, Colombia, and Ecuador. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University-School of Advanced International Studies. Dr. Biles is the author of numerous books and articles. His involvement in politics includes serving as a school board member, county party chair, county election supervisor, and staff member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He has advised state agencies and held leadership positions in statewide lobbying groups and professional organizations. Dr. Biles has received four Fulbright grants, as well as awards for his research, teaching, and administrative service.

I hate that you have to put it in a binder

I hate that you have to put it in a binder! It's not like a hardcover book with the spine of the book. It has all the information but it's still annoying because the pages can rip easily out of the binder you have!
