"Jamie O'Rourke is the laziest man in all of Ireland." So begins well-known children's book author and illustrator Tomie dePaola's retelling of a popular Irish folktale. Jamie is accustomed to his wife doing all the household and garden chores, so when she injures her back, he figures he's sure to starve to death. But as luck would have it, he chances upon a leprechaun. The elfin man offers Jamie the biggest "pratie" in the world in exchange for letting him go.

Feeling self-satisfied, Jamie plants the seed, which soon grows into a potato big enough to be a logistical nightmare for the village. Luckily, his wife comes through for him once again, and everyone ends up happy and full. This is not a redemptive tale--Jamie does not learn to be industrious. It is, however, a lively, simple-yet-outlandish, brightly illustrated story about a man and a potato, with a leprechaun thrown in, for luck. (Ages 4 to 8)

This inspired Irish folktale clearly illustrates that taking the easy way out of a situation is sometimes more trouble than it's worth. Potato farmer Jamie O'Rourke, "the laziest man in all of Ireland," is unfortunately not the brightest of men either. The prospect of a harsh and foodless winter, due to meager crops, and the ceaseless nagging of his hardworking wife impel Jamie to the church to pray for help. As Irish luck would have it, Jamie happens upon and captures a leprechaun who cunningly offers magic potato seeds instead of the traditional pot of gold. The resulting colossal spud feeds the O'Rourkes and the other villagers far longer than anyone could have imagined. Although the comical tone works well here, readers may be surprised that Jamie is rewarded for being lazy. Thatched-roof cottages, stone hedges and sheep dot the green landscape, depicting rustic life on the Emerald Isle. DePaola's distinctive homespun style and genial gentry round, child like faces add plenty of zip to this silly story. Ages 4-8.

Grade 1-3 --dePaola's new picture book pays tribute to the other side of his heritage: the Irish. Adapted from an unspecified folktale, the story follows the adventures of Jamie O'Rourke, ``the laziest man in all of Ireland,'' and his long-suffering wife, Eileen. When Eileen's bad back prevents her from harvesting the potato crop, Jamie is convinced that he's in imminent danger of starvation. He hurries off to church, eager to make his confession before the inevitable end, but along the way he stumbles upon a leprechaun. Overjoyed by his good luck, Jamie accepts a magical potato seed in place of the customary pot of gold. Despite this unorthodox gift, he finds that his fortunes have been made by the encounter--in a roundabout and humorous sort of way. The text has traditional folklore conventions: exaggerated, yet flat, characters; a tricky plot; and, of course, a happy ending. dePaola's illustrations are attractive as always, although their static look is sometimes at odds with the tall-tale flavor of the narrative. A plentitude of potato and humor here!

Pure magic, the watercolor drawings of this book for 2 to 5 year-olds, bringing to life 22 new friends--24 if I include the giant potato and the leprechaun. Set in an Irish-like countryside of about 200 years ago, Tomie dePaola retells an old story that appears in many cultures.

Jamie doesn't like to work; his wife Eileen does what's needed for them to eat. When her back goes out, Jamie fears he'll die from lack of food, so off he goes to get ready for the sad event. On his way to the village, he finds a fairies' shoemaker (the leprechaun) who outsmarts his captor by giving him a seed for the biggest potato on the world, rather than his treasured gold. The blessing becomes first a bane (can't get that veggie out of the ground), then a blessing (the curious villagers help), then a bane (ooops! it blocked the road), then a blessing thanks to quick-witted and kind Eileen (every one can have all they want), then a bane (the villagers eat and eat and eat and eat until they never want to see a potato again), and then a blessing as they offer food for life if Eileen and Jamie plant no more giant potatoes...the big pratie for sure.

The story has a fine lilt of words and as I mentioned, the drawings are wholly charming in DePaola's much-loved style. Is there anything more though to reading children this story?

To me, this is a classic tale of the apparently not-too-bright person--a schlemiel, a trickster, a lazy person---who by a "fortunate misfortune" and a certain talent for keeping on, brings fortune to her/himself and the community. I particularly like that the heroine is the hard-working, cheerful, and very bright Eileen who invites everyone to take all the potato they want, and how the community eventually pitches in to deal with the situations. The children with whom I have read this giggled at the turns of the story and loved the gay illustrations and the rhythm of the tale.

Recommended with delighted enthusiasm for the humor, imagination, and good things to be shared here. It seems to me an opportunity for readers, if they chose, to add some history.

I love the fact that the reader/listener can sense Jaime's wife's ...

As far as creatvity and originality goes, this is a cute story. I love the fact that the reader/listener can sense Jaime's wife's frustration with him. I love that the villagers worked together to solve a problem. I love the wit the leprechaun displayed. It is true that Jaime did not get a lasting consequence for his slothfulness, but it it is no different than reading a book like 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' where Tom got out of painting the fence white because he outwitted his friends. There are people like this my friends. It is just a part of life. We just have to be aware about our gullibility. Also, it isn't like the village community got nothing in return for their industry. It is all about perspective. I disagree with the reviewer who stated that it was an awful book.

I've fallen and I can't get up--this is amazing.

Warning on Captive Prince: Slavery, rape, and pedophilia.

Here’s the set up for Captive Prince, imagine this: You’re a slave, bound up and ready to be sent as a gift to the prince of the neighboring formerly hostile country of Vere. You’re angry and confused and feeling very much betrayed by your people. You’re not trained, but that’s alright. The prince apparently likes a challenge.

Jk, you’re actually the prince of Akielos.

Your brother has apparently pulled the biggest dick move in history, and has taken the throne while telling everyone you’re dead and sending you off to a nation that hates you because you killed their precious previous prince. Yea, his little brother isn’t too happy with Prince Damianos.

Right now though, you’re just Damen, and no one is the wiser. If anyone in Vere figures out that you’re not just named in mockery of the supposedly late Akielon prince, you’re screwed. Unfortunately, that doesn’t matter much to your new master, Prince Laurent. He hates your entire nation, and he’s not particularly interested in having a difficult slave. He’s also not particularly interested in sleeping with anyone, let alone his new slave, despite what the Venetians think.

Your treatment in Vere is pretty bad, despite you theoretically having a comfy gig as the prince’s slave. Everyone calls you a barbarian, and seems to view you as an unbroken stud horse. You may or may not be a “pet,” which is basically a concubine, but since you’re not actually sleeping with the prince, you basically just sit around until you piss him off enough to do something about you. And oh, he will do things to you. Not fun things at all. This is not that kind of story.

Hey, at least the prince is totally your type. Except, you know, his whole terrible personality. In the quiet of your head, there’s plenty of time to thinking about murdering him. You’ve got priorities, after all.

“Sweetmeat?” said Laurent.

In the stretched-out moment that followed, Damen thought explicitly about killing him.

If, as a reader, you’re looking for a sweet gay romance story, this is probably not it.

As of the first book, this story is largely about two men who don’t particularly like or trust one another being forced together by politics and intrigue. Damen is a noble guy in a terrible situation still trying to find a way to do the right thing. Laurent is an absolute jerk, but you can’t help but feel for the guy. It seems something is going terribly wrong with his life, and Damen may just be the man to help him. Or maybe they’ll murder each other. You have to read the book to find out!

Captive Prince is a book that seems to be building up to something big. Not to spoil anything, but by the end of volume one, everything is about to hit the fan and you’re left starving for resolution.

Submission, Command; My Enemy, My Brother.

I highly recommend reading both volumes of the "Captive Prince" - and wait anxiously for the third to be published in 2014 (per the author's blog). Fortunately, the end of Volume 2 is a great transition point even while setting some deep barbs to keep you checking back for Volume 3. I found that I reread both Volumes right after finishing Volume 2 for the first time and enjoyed the reread at least as much as the first pass because I was able to enjoy how the story unfolds from an entirely different perspective.

I found the author's use of language pleasantly and uniquely different than the usual highly edited fodder from the big publishing houses. I hope Volume 3 is not radically different! As noted elsewhere the character's are enjoyably developed.

Based on 20+ years in the military, I think the author shows an excellent understanding of prototype military command styles, how they are developed, how each binds their subordinate fighting forces together and to their will in the face of horror and death, and how successful senior commanders arrange layers of plans, operations, and resources across both time and space while hedging for uncertainty. Like this story perhaps, my own experiences have shown me the common and very similar human side of men who were once my enemies in battle. In truth, brotherhood comes in many forms.

There is certainly more than one "Captive Prince" in this tale, each struggling for freedom... and coming to a new understanding regarding the complexity of just what "freedom" implies.

For me the books were an easy, straight forward, enjoyable read without being simplistic or obvious. Unlike the "Game of Thrones," there are no jarring transitions across an inflated, gratuitous storyline. Instead, "Captive Prince" drives you on relentlessly towards the culmination of an epic conflict of wills and arms that you know is coming... though not in what form or when.

Submission - Command; My Enemy - My Brother; Conflict - Reconciliation; Growth - Death: All these ideas are woven into Captive Prince - between men or even within the same person. In fiction, as in life, there can hardly be one without the other

So read on, and enjoy.

Building, Drawing me in and I'm Loving Every Minute!

Wow. So how do you even explain this book without going on and on for twenty pages. This is the kind of book you need to read a few chapters and then get together to gush or seeth about with friends because there's just SO much!

It plays out like a historical, Romanesque or Highland tale, except it's all fictional lands/kingdoms/societies.

At first it's hard to stick with who's what - the author starts with a map of the region and a glossary - and it helps. I had to refer back to it a couple times in the beginning but then I had it.

Then - it just gets good!

Every turn of the page has another twist. At first you think there is nothing useful in Laurent, and then as the book progresses, you begin to realize that maybe there's something redeemable in there, but no matter what, or how hard you try, you aren't going to figure him out because the author does not want you to.

Damen is... Delicious and I think he carries all of the hopes for all that is wrong to somehow turn out right.

There is some kinky going on all over the place, mostly consensual, but there are slaves in this and societal norms that are also a product of this very creative and intriguing setting so there are a couple non-con scenes involving slaves.

As a m/m romance, I wouldn't say that this was particularly romantic but it seems to have set the ground work for something more to happen in the rest of the series. There is some m/m action but not between our two main characters and honestly, I'm so glad there wasn't. I'm actually enjoying the mystery and the fact that these two didn't look at each other and immediately feel "something deep in their core" or "insane lust" or "insert any cliched insta-love phrase" here. But honestly, I don't know that they ever will be any m/m action between them, just a feeling.

This story is building, drawing me in and I'm loving every minute of it!

One of the best New Age books ever and certainly a before its time revelation into connection with one's higher self. This book uses an adventure story line to introduce the reader to spiritual concepts that just make sense and give one the hope and inspiration to learn these insights themselves.

Awesome read, could not put it down and read the next two books in the same manner!

This book opened my mind to thinking about how as humans we relate to one another. The language is simple, and the plot noticeably serves the underlying philosophies of the book, but that didn't bother me too much. Having experienced firsthand a lot of the message the author means to communicate, it was an enjoyable story to relate the insights Redfield shares. Worth reading over a weekend if you're looking for some spiritual solace or desire to look at life in a new way. A book worth talking about between friends.

I liked it, but it is obviously not for everyone.

I personally loved it, but it is obviously not for everyone. I would venture to say that I found enough value in it to A) read it again and B) continue with the series. Is it written at a seventh to tenth grade level? Sure, I would have had no trouble reading this book in junior high school. That is what a good writer does when considering mass appeal. I don't fault him for that. It's a planned tactic.

Are there instances where, say, the bad guy explains things instead of saying something more expected like, "Shut up, I'll ask the questions here!"? Sure, but the plot needs to move forward somehow. I mean, I didn't really find this book boring at all, but there were a few points where I was thinking, "Meh, it probably wouldn't happen that way in real life." Once again, it's a novel.

All that said, I did find myself underlining many things that I thought were useful things to ponder and meditate upon. The story itself was alright, but I really appreciated the insights. I would share it with friends who are interested in this sort of thing. I'm glad that a friend recommended it to me.

Considering it is a work of fiction, there are parts that I take with a grain of salt, so to speak. That said, in a world of infinite possibilities, who is to say that the story couldn't play out this way?

In short, if you don't believe in anything that you cannot sense with your 5 senses, then you'd be better off sticking with whatever your church or personal belief system relays to you. If you're into energy work and other things of that ilk, you might enjoy the ride. Of course, as other reviewers have pointed out, there are other sources for more direct and complete information. This book has no mention of Chakras, Kundalini, alien interactions, etc...There's plenty of other reference material out there.

All of that said, I still think that there are plenty of useful things that a person can learn to implement into his/her life, if only he/she is receptive to the messages embedded into the story...and again, it's written as a fictional story. Lighten up and don't expect it to be a testimonial.

The workbook and book together are the best therapy books I have ever used - 10 stars!

This book is a great help in therapy. I have personally gone through the book twice, and gotten a great deal out of it both times. The workbook really allows you to take what you learn in the book and apply it to your own life. It is hard. The process of becoming aware of what is and isn't abuse is hard enough (and this has nothing to do with "recovering" memories, it simply has to do with finding out what you thought was normal is horrifyingly not). Processing the memories is what, over time, helps you stop living in them all the time. But then, you have to face the Biblical truth of sin being passed down the generations. It's not enough to break the pattern. You also have to recognize how you lashed out and hurt people while you were trying to protect yourself. You have to stop doing that and learn how to have healthy responses. The first time I went through the book, I fought against the idea that I, the victim, also victimized other people along the way. The second time through, I accepted that my abusers had shaped my behavior, and that I had to choose how I wanted to treat people, and not let my abusers control my current relationships. That changed my life.

A Tender Devotional Alternative to Working Through Sexual Abuse

As I've mentioned in my previous reviews on self-help books for abuse survivors, I don't go for the current so-called Christian clap-trap ideas of healing and forgiving. Many push the idea that you should "forgive and forget," bury the memories, and be nice to your abuser by never mentioning the past, to "get along" at all costs. Some also argue that we should just hand it all over to Jesus and everything will be fine.

Dan Allender boldly attacks and rejects these notions in his book The Wounded Heart. Allender is a Christian counselor who has worked extensively with victims of sexual abuse throughout his career, and Colorado Christian University I believe still maintains a sexual abuse ministry he helped establish. The book itself is written mostly for women, though I believe men can also benefit from it.

My interest in this book was piqued by a friend who herself had used the book to tackle her own past issues. Something about the hopeful tone I picked up in her voice told me this book offered something different and worth looking into.

The Wounded Heart took me several months to finish, but not because it is poorly written or boring. Rather it is because Allender's words, what he has to offer, is so intense that I had to take breaks and let the weight of what I just read absorb before I could move forward with taking another bite. This book is definitely not for those in search of a quick read or wanting pat answers.

The first thing Allender does, and nicely done I might add, is stake through the heart all the notions that we have to play nicey-nice for everyone else's comfort and look like a good Christian while facing down our pasts. If anything, he states that this is probably the most damaging thing to push on an abuse survivor, because you can't bury what's alive and expect it not to scream. The cost of "getting along" with someone who has committed one of the greater evils in life against you for the sake of pleasing everyone else is ultimately that of revictimization, greater pain, and a deadening of the soul.

In reality this is not a true calling of Christ. Instead it's a way of other Christians to not have to face the discomfort they feel in response to the painful reality that something as horrendous as sexual abuse exists. They don't want to risk losing that warm fuzzy feeling some contemporary Christian experts and authors have rightly come to term "cheap grace." It is artificial in nature and stifles long-term growth.

From here, Allender explores how victims are often set up for abuse, most commonly from a vicious cycle created from an unloved, unhappy child receiving attention from a perpetrator zeroing in on a kill. The child, in turn, will do anything for continued attention... setting them up for unwilling compliance to the unspeakable.

Sometimes this is reinforced by other family members who cannot or will not understand why their child will suddenly turn cold towards Uncle Fred and chastize her for not minding her manners. It perpetuates an incredibly ugly cycle.

Allender then analyzes the effects sexual abuse has on the victim in later life. He outlines three specific personalities that can emerge. I recognized myself in all three as I looked back on my life. I could see where I was a Good Girl to please everyone and get along so people would like me, the Tough Girl because of that part of me that'd had enough of being a doormat and hyper-reacted, and the Party Girl during the times I wanted attention but didn't want anyone too close to me, which sadly was often.

The Wounded Heart then sets before the reader a challenge: We must die to the self that has come out of the past, and find renewed life in God to become what we were meant to be, not what the abuser made one into through his or her sinful acts, and we must act boldly for this change to occur. Allender could not be more tender or compassionate in getting this message across, but he also delivers it with complete and unwavering conviction. What he has to say is undeniable and motivating.

It's also crystal clear that we must do the work. God is there to guide and inspire, but as human beings with free will, the effort and the power to change is ours. Simply lobbing the whole mess into Jesus' lap and expecting Him to fix it all without us pitching in simply will not do... and speaking philosophically here, I do not believe it would be within our natures to feel satisfied or successful even if problems could be solved this way.

The book also covers ways in which a former victim can and should respond to various abusers in their daily life. Allender breaks down that there are different types of abusers, ranging from those annoying snotty little jerks we'll have to deal with every day simply because we live in a fallen world, all the way up to the perpetrator of the abuse and what Allender calls an abuse-surrogate, a significant other who has taken the place of the perpetrator in the victim's life and mind and continues to create an abusive environment. With the last two, there must be change to end the cycle.

With the childhood perpetrator, The Wounded Heart makes it very clear that there is no requirement to forgive or continue a relationship with such a person unless they have met certain conditions that indicate they repent and take responsibility for what they have done. In fact, it is argued, a relationship must not continue and there must not be forgiveness at all until this happens for the sake of the victim's recovery.

This is a Christian principle through and through. Allender cites Luke 17:3 in his emphasis that forgiveness towards the abuser is indeed conditional, something many Christians overlook in what is likely a spirit of misinformation. Yes, we must forgive as God forgives; however, God only forgives when there is repentance and amends are made.

"They know not what they do" cannot be argued here either - an abuser is a predator. They plan, they scheme and they deliberately attack having full knowledge of right and wrong. God has no qualms with calling us to discern what is evil. We must, lest we compromise morals and principles that help us protect the innocent.

The Wounded Heart is a cogent, loving devotional that dedicates itself soulfully to helping the sexual abuse victim discover a relationship with God they likely imagined they could never have. I cannot recommend this book enough for any Christian who is struggling with childhood sexual abuse; I have no reason to believe it can't help non-Christians at some level as well, if for nothing else than for validation and ideas on how to work through the abuse.

A companion workbook is available for use on one's own or in a support group. I do have a copy of this and I will review it once I've worked through its contents.

Best Recovery Manual Around

After many months in recovery for addiction, I finally realized why I hated myself so much--unresolved issues from my childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Our church sponsors a recovery ministry for over 200 people each week. We have about 25 groups covering 18 different topics, but no men's CSA group. I was very apprehensive about co-leading a men's CSA recovery group until I read this book!

Dr. Dan Allender has counseled thousands of victims of sexual abuse, and his wisdom is here. Although written with "she" pronouns, the book applies as much to men as women. Along with the companion textbook, The Wounded Heart deals with guilt, shame, contempt, memory issues, sexual repercussions, and many more topic areas.

His stories will cut you to the core, where you will find yourself facing your own fears and false beliefs.

Where was God when I was being abused? If you don't struggle with that question, then you'll never move forward. Dr. Allender allows you to struggle; he pokes all the sore spots from your past. His no-holds-barred approach is compelling, and you're left with nowhere to hide. You'll either run away from your past or work through it.

Jeffers discusses the crippling effects of fear in her personal life and explains how she formulated a course of action for conquering it. Her answers are simple, her course of action difficult only because it requires courage. She explains how fear is based on the uncertainty of change and the lack of positive self image. She avoids psychological lingo, and includes many case studies about careers and changes in personal life both of which are beginning to cause anxiety in many teens. Her message is reassuring: choices are not opportunities to make mistakes, but valid paths to growth, whichever path we take. She addresses the fundamental cause of fear the belief that ``I can't handle it!'' Feel the Fear is an important book, for while some young people are more crippled by insecurity that others, many do believe that the path to adulthood is fraught with dangers. Based on a course taught at the New School for Social Research, this book offers readers a clear-cut plan for action that, when followed, should help them unlearn their misconceptions about of fear and replace them with attitudes of strength and conviction. By mixing positive thinking with situational exercises that examine basic fear responses, psychologist Jeffers shows that fear is what you make of it and that in most cases it is unfounded. She also illustrates key points through examining case studies, which show that when we are fearful, faulty thinking is most often the real culprit; when such thinking is corrected, the fear is gone. This book by no means offers a quick, fix-it course, as the author encourages return visits to the text when situations call for it. Recommended for general self-help collections. Life Changing

This will sound so corny and cliche, but this book changed my life. Seriously, it did.

Now, with that said, what Susan Jeffers has to say in, "Feel The Fear...And Do It Anyway", isn't anything that's earth shattering or even new. Most of it is probably even things you may have thought yourself. However, the simplicity of what she says is delivered in a way that DOES make it fresh, new, and life changing.

I had been stuck in what a friend referred to as a "fur-lined rut" for well more than a decade. I knew I wanted to "unstick" myself, but just couldn't seem to make it happen. While reading through this the first time, I began putting the tenants into practice and began to see a change in my thinking first, and then in my actions next. I'm re-reading it again and the (positive!) changes keep flowing.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make some change in their life but is held back by fear. This book doesn't make the fear go away - but it does inspire you to do what you need to do anyway.

Extremely helpful book, especially if you have some issues with anxiety and decision making

Very helpful book! I'm a little more than half-way through, but I love it. I've always struggled with taking risks and facing rejection (don't we all though?) and I can definitely say that this book has really helped me look at life in a different way, as corny as that sounds. I actually came across this book while working on a project at work and was so intrigued that I looked it up when I got home, ordered a sample on my kindle, and then purchased the book.

I'm very, very indecisive and it can be paralyzing to me and this book has helped me look at how to make decisions in a whole new light. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone so I won't go into detail, but it basically comes down to the fact that any decision you make with take you on a certain path and yield a different result. The focus is NOT on making a right or wrong choice, but deciding to make a decision and being confident with your choice. I HIGHLY recommend this book, it's wonderful and the writing style is natural and feels like your talking to a friend when you're reading it.

Insightful, but not the gospel

I read this book because I heard it was incredible, and because I'm at a place in my life where I'm ready to take on some new/scary endeavors, and wanted to know how to power through the fear. I learned that fear stops us from becoming greater versions of ourselves, and the importance of not necessarily becoming fearless, but to change your mindset and telling yourself it's okay to be afraid, be compassionate with yourself, and replace the negative inner voice with a positive one. I felt like some of the advice provided was general, which is great, but also felt like some of it was "it must be this way or that". She also talks about doing things WITHOUT fear when the premise of the book is about pushing you to be your greatest, most successful self in SPITE of fear. I encourage the reader to take from it what fits them, which is what I did.
