About the Author
Diana Kendall is Professor of Sociology at Baylor University, where she has been recognized as an Outstanding Professor. She has taught a variety of courses, including Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Theory (undergraduate and graduate), Sociology of Medicine, Sociology of Law, and Race, Class, and Gender. Previously, she enjoyed many years of teaching sociology and serving as chair of the Social and Behavioral Science Division at Austin Community College. Dr. Kendall's areas of specialization and primary research interests are sociological theory and the sociology of medicine. Her books include SOCIOLOGY IN OUR TIMES: THE ESSENTIALS (Cengage Learning, 2016), THE POWER OF GOOD DEEDS: PRIVILEGED WOMEN AND THE SOCIAL REPRODUCTION OF THE UPPER CLASS (Rowman & Littlefield, 2002), MEMBERS ONLY: ELITE CLUBS AND THE PROCESS OF EXCLUSION (Rowman & Littlefield, 2008), and FRAMING CLASS: MEDIA REPRESENTATIONS OF WEALTH AND POVERTY IN AMERICA, 2nd Edition (Rowman & Littlefield, 2012). Her most recent scholarly publication is "Class: Still Alive and Reproducing in the United States," a book chapter in PRIVILEGE: A READER, 4th Edition (2016, Westview Press). Dr. Kendall is actively involved in national and regional sociological associations, including the American Sociological Association, the Society for the Study of Social Problems, and the Southwestern Sociological Association. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was invited to membership in Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

This text book was very simple to read and almost too easy for college. I found it boring, but class may have been part of it. Pictures were nice though!

It is an alright book. Not good renting quality from Amazon

Rented this book for a community college class, pages were very bent, pages were heavily marked with highlighter, and sticky notes were still sticking out of the book.

Overall, the book itself is okay, I cannot tell if the book itself is unorganized or if my professor teaching the class is unorganized. I think some of the subsections aren't clearly labeled so I am never sure if a subheader falls under the larger header or if it is a topic on its own.

About the Author
Nivaldo Tro is Professor of Chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990.  He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution.  Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin layer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces.   He has been honored as Westmont's outstanding teacher of the year three times and has also received the college's outstanding researcher of the year award.  Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Ali, Kyle, and Kaden. In his leisure time, Professor Tro enjoys mountain biking, surfing, reading to his children, and being outdoors with his family.

About the Author

Vivian H. Heyward, PhD, is a Regents professor emerita at the University of New Mexico, where she taught physical fitness assessment and exercise prescription courses for 26 years. In addition to the previous editions of this book, she has authored two editions of Applied Body Composition Assessment (Human Kinetics, 1996, 2004) as well as numerous articles in research and professional journals dealing with various aspects of physical fitness assessment and exercise prescription. Heyward has received many professional awards, including Distinguished Alumni Awards from the University of Illinois and the State University of New York at Cortland and the SWACSM Recognition Award for distinguished professional service and achievement.

In her free time, she enjoys hiking, nature photography, golfing, and snowshoeing. Heyward resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Ann L. Gibson, PhD, is an associate professor and researcher in exercise science at the University of New Mexico, with research interests in body composition and physiological responses to exercise. She developed the ancillary materials for the sixth edition of Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription in addition to coauthoring the seventh edition.

Gibson has presented internationally in the area of obesity research. She has also published original research in journals such as Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, International Journal of Sport Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, and The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Gibson resides in New Mexico, where she enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, biking, climbing, cross-country skiing, and gardening.

Great book and not too "Advanced"

Excellent text as was the earlier edition. I am bemused that this book has received one and two star reviews ..

Beginning with an overview of the importance of physical activity for health (and the prevention /maintenance of chronic medical conditions), this book proceeds through the continuum of exercise prescription from preliminary health screening to designing programs for the individual components of health-fitness.

The book is methodical without ever becoming tedious, and contains information based on the latest scientific research. Although labelled "Advanced", in my opinion it would be suited to both 'thinking' undergraduate and post-graduate study, or as I use it - an excellent reference source.

I have not accessed the online videos so I cannot comment on them but the book alone has been a worthwhile purchase and I typically refer to something in it at leas weekly and frequently more often.

PS this is my "go-to" reference for general exercise prescription (aerobic, resistance, flexibility etc). If you are looking for something more specific to resistance training, I'd suggest the Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning - 3rd Edition (I have both).

If this is just how it is, I will be returning the e-book. It gets three stars due to the inability to use this in an educational setting.

As well as being the only single source reference for international standards as they affect fax communications, the book contains: details of the command sets for programming the most common types of fax modem (EIA Classes 1, 2 and 2.0); an account of the TIFF specification for storing fax images; an introduction to basic fax information for communications engineers; and a fax TOOLKIT (included on disk) complete with C source code, which supports all the major fax modems and functions required for successful faxing. Wherever possible, the author provides practical programming advice and also helpful hints on how to interpret and implement the standard recommendations. exactly as described

The book was used described as "very goodcondition"and that's what I got.

Regarding the contents, as I expected: it explains the modem and fax principles, standards and implementation in very simple language and is easy to read and understand. I am entering the fax/modem signal processing area now it is the first book I could read and start understanding this field of communications.

The book was introduced to me by my supervisor in the work who is an expert in digital communications and I was surprised to see that he has this book as reference also!

Extremely comprehensive reference

This book receives five enthusiastic stars for the outstanding information content but only four stars for the included sample software.

I've been a commercial fax software developer for more than ten years, and I was surprised to see how much I learned in this book. The information content is the best I've ever seen for a fax modem book, and Andrew Margolis' writing style is professional and very easy to read. He is clearly a veteran of this business, and it seems like he really enjoys writing.

He exhaustively covers virtually everything that one would need to do anything with a fax modem: T.4 image structure, class 1, class 2, class 2.0, T.30 handshaking, and TIFF files. His coverage is exceptionally complete, and he does not limit himself to just the standards. Throughout the text he discusses where the real world conflicts with "how it should be" and how one works around them. One cannot wish these issues away, and discovering them early rather than later is simply golden.

Coverage of serial-port control is a bit thin, and it only addresses the PC platform, but this is such a minor nit that it does not detract from the work as a whole. UNIX developers will have to discover how to talk serial ports from some other source.

The only reason this does not receive five stars is that the sample software seems fairly pedestrian and not terribly good as an example. It seems that Andrew has sacrificed substantial performance for potential clarity, something I attribute to a likely conscious choice rather than an oversight. Since he is probably also a commercial fax developer, I suspect he didn't want to give away his secrets. I know that most of the "bit-banging" code is horrendously slow, although probably straightforward to read. In his position I may have made the same tradeoff, but the reader is left to perform these optimizations himself. Some of the optimizations are not at all obvious.

Anybody remotely involved in writing or supporting fax software should have this book. Other than my objections to the include sample code, I cannot think of a single thing that would have improved this book, other than it having it be in my library ten years ago.

This book helped me to get my fax gateway development project up and running in (a rather sleepless) 3 days. Would recommend for anyone looking to implement facsimile send/receive. Much more readily comprehensible than the ITU specifications.

I don't use it very often unless its absolutely necessary for an assignment. I have to spend a lot more time reading through the text (in comparison to other textbooks) to glean the information I need.
