"The ICS model provides an opportunity for aligning educational programming within and across schools to provide a comprehensive PreK-12 experience that culminates in the results districts are looking for:students exceeding their potential and having the skills, knowledge, and long-term understandings that can be applied to real-world problems." (Brian T. Pulvino, Director of Special Education 2006-10-29)

"The implications for leadership are compelling. Teachers, principals, directors, and superintendents should include this book as a must-read as they advance equity and excellence for all children in their schools and districts." (Barbara J. Sramek, Director of Special Education 2006-10-27)

"Not to be missed by either teachers or colleges catering to teacher education. This book goes well beyond the usual focus on testing results to help educators decide on program implementation." (California Bookwatch, July 2007 2007-08-10)

“This volume is essential reading for any parent, teacher, school administrator, or academic within the field of education interested in working toward solutions to the problems plaguing our schools in the 21st century instead of maintaining the status quo. The ICS framework offers an empirically tested model for school districts to consider if they are seriously interested in substantive school reform.” (PsycCRITIQUES, January 2008, Vol. 53(5) 2008-02-15)

Those Who Save Us, by Jenna Blum

For fifty years, Anna Schlemmer has refused to talk about her life in Germany during World War II. Her daughter, Trudy, was only three when she and her mother were liberated by an American soldier and went to live with him in Minnesota. Trudy's sole evidence of the past is an old photograph: a family portrait showing Anna, Trudy, and a Nazi officer, the Obersturmfuhrer of Buchenwald.

Driven by the guilt of her heritage, Trudy, now a professor of German history, begins investigating the past and finally unearths the dramatic and heartbreaking truth of her mother's life.

Combining a passionate, doomed love story, a vivid evocation of life during the war, and a poignant mother/daughter drama, Those Who Save Us is a profound exploration of what we endure to survive and the legacy of shame.

From Publishers Weekly
Blum, who worked for Steven Spielberg's Shoah Foundation, takes a direct, unsentimental look at the Holocaust in her first novel. The narrative alternates between the present-day story of Trudy, a history professor at a Minneapolis university collecting oral histories of WWII survivors (both German and Jewish), and that of her aged but once beautiful German mother, Anna, who left her country when she married an American soldier. Interspersed with Trudy's interviews with German immigrants, many of whom reveal unabashed anti-Semitism, Anna's story flashes back to her hometown of Weimar. As Nazi anti-Jewish edicts intensify in the 1930s, Anna hides her love affair with a Jewish doctor, Max Stern. When Max is interned at nearby Buchenwald and Anna's father dies, Anna, carrying Max's child, goes to live with a baker who smuggles bread to prisoners at the camp. Anna assists with the smuggling after Trudy's birth until the baker is caught and executed. Then Anna catches the eye of the Obersturmführer, a high-ranking Nazi officer at Buchenwald, who suspects her of also supplying the inmates with bread. He coerces her into a torrid, abusive affair, in which she remains complicit to ensure her survival and that of her baby daughter. Blum paints a subtle, nuanced portrait of the Obersturmführer, complicating his sordid cruelty with more delicate facets of his personality. Ultimately, present and past overlap with a shocking yet believable coincidence. Blum's spare imagery is nightmarish and intimate, imbuing familiar panoramas of Nazi atrocity with stark new power. This is a poised, hair-raising debut.

From Booklist
Family secrets of Nazi Germany are at the core of this powerful first novel told in two narratives that alternate between New Heidelberg, Minnesota, in the present, and the small town of Weimar near Buchenwald during World War II. Trudy is a professor of German history in Minnesota, where she's teaching a seminar on women's roles in Nazi Germany and conducting interviews with Germans about how they're dealing with what they did during the war. But her mother, Anna, won't talk about it, not even to her own daughter. Trudy knows, she remembers, that Anna was mistress to a big Nazi camp officer. Why did she do it? Was he Trudy's father? The interviews are a plot contrivance to introduce a range of attitudes, from blatant racism to crippling survivor guilt. But the characters, then and now, are drawn with rare complexity, including a brave, gloomy, unlucky rescuer and a wheeler-dealer survivor. Anna's story is a gripping mystery in a page-turner that raises universal questions of shame, guilt, and personal responsibility. Hazel Rochman

Hard to read but worth it.
By Amazon Customer
Being of the age where I remember WWII and the American's discovery of Hitler's extermination camps, I found this book engrossing. I have never before thought about how the German people reacted to the Jews being rounded up and how the German people themselves had to live in such squalor or that they also had rationing, just as we in this nation did. I got an insight into how hard it was for the Germans, especially the women, to make a way to care for themselves and their children or the depths to which they would go to survive. This isn't a "fun" book to read but it is informative and I believe it was well researched. The only reason I give this book a 4 instead of a 5 is because it has been published without quotation marks and there were times I had to go back and re-read a section to see if it was conversation or explanation. I've' never come across a book without quotation marks in it and I have to say it did make it harder, in some places, for me to understand sentence structure. I loved the ending, considering this is what I consider a "dark" book, but then the subject itself does not lend to a "light" reading. Being of German descent myself, I was even more grateful that my great, great grandparents left Germany when they did , escaping through Switzerland. I feel like I've learned something that could have been from my own roots and am happy my own ancestors got out when they did.

AWESOME AND EXTRAORDINARY ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH
By Sharon Emmons
This book wrecked me and then put me back together again!! If I could write half that well, I would do nothing else. Once I began, I HAD to finish it. I have never had a book make me cry buckets, gasp out loud and pray so hard for the principle characters in my entire life. Heart wringingly desperate circumstances and heartbreaking choices make for wonderful fiction but the real soul shattering thing is that this kind of desperation provoked by such heinous and atrocious acts of mankind against each other is based in actual fact. Mankind is the only animal that will kill their own kind just for the pleasure of it. I get angry at people who say things like if they had been in such and such a situation they would have handled it differently. Until you are in a situation and the welfare of those you hold dearest is in the balance you can't say what you would do. The people who save us do deserve thankfulness and appreciation in amounts we will NEVER be able to give in one lifetime. We have such a hard time seeing things from anyone else's view but our own and we have an even harder time realizing what it costs another person to step outside themselves and do for others, on a daily basis, and then ESPECIALLY when it really counts. Parents and children have such a hard time relating to each other especially when they are under stress like from age thirteen to thirty, but under these extreme circumstances they can spend four or five DECADES just coexisting as relative strangers and that's what I find so gut wrenching. We must NEVER forget what has happened in the past but we as a race have really GOT to improve our communication skills ESPECIALLY with those near and dear to us. All in all a wonderful book although hard to read at the same time as hard to put down. This one is going to stay with me FOREVER!!! Awesomely well done Jenna Blum !!! Thank you so much !!!

Outstanding Book!
By Robin O. Harris
Jenna Blum does a masterful job writing about an intriguing but rarely explored topic: the experiences and long-term impact of the lives of everyday Germans during World War II. Blum uses a literary device that generally does not appeal to me; she goes back and forth in time throughout the novel. However, in doing so, Blum enhances the storyline as each chapter slowly ties together to build the story of Anna, a young German woman who falls in love with a Jewish doctor, a member of the German Resistance, and secretly hides him in her home after the Nazis come to arrest him. When her father, a businessman tight with the higher Nazi echelon, discovers her lover and turns him over to the Nazis, Anna runs away from home and finds shelter with a female baker she knows is also a part of the Resistance. Anna becomes the baker's apprentice and gives birth to the daughter of her lover, now imprisoned in a famous German camp just outside the town. The rest of the story describes Anna's efforts to survive the war and provide safety and security for her daughter, Trudy. Fifty years later, Trudy, now a professor of German History, struggles with a difficult relationship with her mother, and becomes involved in a project collecting the stories of German's who lived through the war. Blum slowly and delicately brings the two threads together with surprising and poignant results. This is an amazing book and a must read. Rarely does a novel provide so much significant food for thought and touch on aspects relevant to all of us as we go about our daily lives living for today without thinking of the historical consequences of our everyday acts. I highly recommend this book.

Finding Hope in the Age of Anxiety: Recognise It, Acknowledge It and Take Your Power Back, by Claire Hayes

I can't face this. No one understands how hard it is for me. People are looking at me. Why am I like this? Why can I not be like everyone else? What's wrong with me?

Sound familiar?

Thoughts such as these can trigger us to feel anxious, stupid, upset and frustrated. We have choices. We can blame ourselves and others, avoid certain situations and worry. Or we can acknowledge our thoughts and feelings and take our power back from anxiety by facing it with understanding, courage and compassion.

Here, taking a self-compassionate approach, Dr Claire Hayes presents anxiety as a normal part of every stage of life, from childhood through to adolescence and adulthood. Using the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dr Hayes helps us to recognise, understand and take control of the unhelpful thoughts, beliefs and actions that cause anxiety.

This book offers hope to people who struggle with anxiety, as well as to those who support them.

'Helps us understand how we contribute unwittingly to our own difficulties, how we can change the way we think, feel and act, and thus live a more fulfilling life.' Dr Rosaleen McElvaney, Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist and Lecturer, School of Nursing and Human Sciences, DCU

'Offers gentle ways to hope and cope in the Age of Anxiety.' Professor Philip C. Kendall, Temple University, Philadelphia

'Truly outstanding ... I can think of no other work in this area that I would recommend as strongly.' Mark Morgan, Cregan Professor of Education and Psychology, DCU

The Pursuit of Unhappiness: The Elusive Psychology of Well-Being, by Daniel M. Haybron

The pursuit of happiness is a defining theme of the modern era. But what if people aren't very good at it? That is the question posed by this book, the first comprehensive philosophical treatment of happiness, understood here as a psychological phenomenon. Engaging heavily with the scientific literature, Dan Haybron argues that people probably know less about their own welfare, and may be less effective at securing it, than common belief has it. This is largely because human nature is surprisingly ill-suited to the pursuit of happiness. For the happiness that counts for well-being is not a matter of what we think about our lives, but of the quality of our emotional conditions. Yet our emotional lives are remarkably difficult to grasp. Moreover, we make a variety of systematic errors in the pursuit of happiness. These considerations suggest that we should rethink traditional assumptions about the good life and the good society. For instance, the pursuit of happiness may be primarily a matter of social context rather than personal choice.

This book offers an extensive guide to philosophical thinking about happiness and well-being, correcting serious misconceptions that have beset the literature. It will be a definitive resource for philosophers, social scientists, policymakers, and other students of well-being.

Review
Review from previous edition: "Insightful and imaginative. A serious pleasurable read for those happy enough to explore a difficult subject." --Paul O'Doherty, Irish Times

"Subtitled 'the elusive pscychology of well-being', this is a brilliant and comprehensive philosophical treatment of happiness in the psychological sense... The book calls us to rethink our assumptions about the good life and the good society, raising many of the questions explored by Aldous Huxley in Brave New World and Island. All this raises interesting and complex questions for politicians and educationalist as they grapple with introducing happiness studies into the curriculum." --Psychology/Parasychology

"An original and thorough investigation, richly informed by empirical psychology, of almost every topic connected, or seen as connected, with happiness: the self, well-being and virtue, and the good society. It is written in an engaging, often humorous, sometimes poetic, style, and contains a wealth of illustrations from life, literature, film, science, the arts, the news media, and Haybron's own prodigious imagination... It is safe to say that, after this book, happiness will never be the same again." --Neera Badhwar, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

"A prodigious act of scholarship whose comprehensiveness dwarfs previous efforts. The best single source for empirical and philosophical approaches to investigating happiness. A highly nuanced treatment that rewards the reader with its frequent and original insights." --Robert L. Woolfolk, Princeton University

"Haybron's book is a perfect example of how philosophical ethics can matter beyond the academy as well as within it. This original book is an acute, engaging, and well-informed discussion of an issue of concern to every human being." --Roger Crisp, University of Oxford

"Daniel Haybron has written a rare book that combines philosophical sophistication with detailed knowledge of, and respect for, the psychological literature. He integrates the best that philosophy and psychology have to offer in pursuit of an answer to the question that matters above all others: how we ought to live. The result is a book that will edify psychologists and philosophers alike." --Barry Schwartz, Swarthmore College

"Both progress and provocation are vibrantly on display in Dan Haybron's oustanding new book, The Pursuit of Unhappiness. The book is a model of humanistic inquiry: acute philosophical argumentation disciplined by close and careful attention to the latest and best in the sciences of mind, everywhere textured by a keen eye for what it is to be a person - and why it matters." --John M. Doris, Washington University in St Louis

"Dan Haybron has written the definitive philosophical book on happiness, and it is a must-read for scholars of the good life. The work is broad, balanced, and interesting, and yet forcefully presents the case that happiness is a crucial element of good living. In making the argument, Haybron beautifully reviews both the philosophy of happiness, including what this concept means, and the empirical work on the topics arising in fields such as psychology and economics." --Ed Diener, Universtiy of Illinois

"Dan Haybron asks the key philosophical questions about happiness: what is happiness, and how can we know about it, and what is it good for? His book offers insightful answers that are well-grounded in both science and philosophy. The book is full of clear and rigorous arguments, but at the same time it is a pleasure to read. It will be a milestone in the philosophical discussion of happiness." --David Chalmers, Australian National University

About the Author

Daniel Haybron is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Saint Louis University. His research interests centre on several issues in ethics: well-being and the good life, moral evil, and the virtues.

A really interesting book on happiness and flourishing
By K. Kehler
This extremely interesting and in places downright fascinating book is worth every penny you spend to acquire it. Sure, it's a hardback, but get it anyway: you'll probably want to re-read it. Haybron's title mentions unhappiness, but this is not a catalogue of the myriad ways in which we are, or can be, unhappy -- though he thinks we're less happy than we could be. He writes exceptionally well, and he thinks clearly. Indeed it's hard to imagine that this book hasn't been the product of decades of reflection on the weighty matter of human well-being and contentedness, for he seems very wise. He's a philosopher but there are many examples in it, and a number of "practical" asides, and a goodly number of references to, and quotations from, works of literature. Above all, he is someone who has absorbed work done in other disciplines, principally psychology.

He is a cautious rather than a dogmatic writer, though after he treats such themes as psychic affirmation, self-fulfillment (not in the sappy, New Age sense), the role of the emotions in our happiness, and so on, he concludes that we should live our lives in a more contextualist fashion. By this contextualism I take it that he means a kind of communitarian liberalism, something he thinks would be more conducive to our flourishing and happiness.

For a work of philosophy this has some amusing parts (Haybron talks about Pollyannas vs Kvetches). He discusses -- generally in passing -- a number of thinkers and views. One will find references to Bentham, Plato, Nietzsche, Mill, Freud, Aristotle, etc. (in addition to writers like Hemingway, Thoreau, Forster and Pound). Using evidence from narratives, oral reports, novels and works of philosophy, and above all from studies in psychology and economics, Haybron shows that the major (popular) ethical theories philosophers discuss (Kantianism, utilitarianism, virtue theory) are not fine-grained enough when it comes to treating the question of happiness/flourishing. Integrating the insights of psychological investigations into philosophy will help in providing what is missing. Ultimately his target is what he calls the Personal Authority position, the view that we know ourselves best/well and therefore know what is best for our flourishing. This target is a form of "transparency" subjectivism, which he rightly argues is incompatible with the evidence. Haybron defends a version of mild objectivism, which he says is distinct from Aristotelian and other virtue/perfectionist positions, but which seems quasi-Aristotelian to me (I'll defer to Haybron). Overall, he wants us to rethink some of the more individualistic and selfish attitudes engendered by liberal modernity, without throwing the liberal baby out with the subjectivist/individualist bathwater. It could make us happier.

A good solid book on English grammar
By Amazon Customer
Straight to the point, practical, and plenty of exercises. However, some concepts havent explored in great details (for eg. the (subtle) difference between "think of" and "think about" aren't mentioned). But overall a pretty good solid book!

A great exercise book to improve your grammar skills, specially if Spanish is your native language.

Pretty good
By James Murphy
I picked this one because it seemed to offer what other ESL books I have used in teaching did. It is adequate, but not really as good. It's progression is awkward to me. There are a lot of good things about it, the lessons are adequate for their purpose, but the way it advances leaves me wishing it was building more on the past lesson rather than feeling we were starting out on a completely new tack.
