Power problematized

In this monograph, Pandey seeks to deconstruct the discourse on communalism from a variety of approaches, by examining urban and rural class relations, caste-uplift movements, mobilization in popular movements, and the colonial and nationalist discourses on the subaltern (Pandey 1990, 5). The geographical parameters of "The Construction of Communalism" are the Bhojpuri-speaking region of eastern Uttar Pradesh and western Bihar, while its temporal scope, from the early nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, is delimited by the timeframe in which the phenomenon of communalism came into its own. As the Subalternist tide had shifted to take on as its opponent the Enlightenment, its rationality, the State, and so forth, by the time of its publication, Pandey privileges not the subaltern, but the resistant 'community' viewed as a countervailing force that constituted 'Indian society beyond the confines of the state [and] survived and demanded recognition as a dynamic, deliberative and far from insignificant force in colonial India' (Pandey 1990, 109).
In "The Construction of Communalism," Pandey argues that rather than being the eternal 'pathological condition' of Indian society that communalism was understood as in colonial and nationalist discourse, it is 'another characteristic and paradoxical product of the age of Reason (and of Capital) which also gave us [Indians] colonialism and nationalism' (Pandey 1990, 5). More specifically, he identifies four historical forces that gave rise to the politics of communalism over the course of the nineteenth century: a colonial governmentality (Foucault's term) that sought to classify and fix caste and religious identities onto a relatively diffuse social order; the drive for upward social mobility of lower castes (both Hindu Sanskritization and Muslim Ashrafization) that found recognition in census categories; the simultaneous initiative of religious elites to purify religious life (both ritual and practical); and the economic and demographic dislocations wrought by colonial capitalism (Pandey 1990, 71-93).
While difficult to grasp as a coherent monograph because it does not present a running narrative (this was out of the question by the time it was published), "The Construction of Communalism" presents what is, arguably, the most sophisticated framework of power relations between colonial government and subaltern community in Subalternist historiography. Not only does the number of pistons powering the engine of history multiply, but the number of engines, and thus, histories, proliferates as well: Up to the late nineteenth century, the agency of the community in enacting political movements was delimited by material circumstances and an autonomous consciousness. Virtually independent from this process, colonial discourse, for which political action was a law-and-order problem, interpreted this through an increasingly narrow lens of communalism. This discourse informed the 'colonial sociology' of the census. Meanwhile, communities such as the Julahas (predominantly Muslim weavers) of Mubarakpur resisted, both domination internal to Indian society and downward mobility instigated by the flooding of Indian markets by British textiles, through inventing their own genealogies, and used these in tandem with the niches colonial censusing was opening and fixing (Pandey 1990, 23-157). Thus, in accordance with Foucault and Said, an ever-intrusive Enlightenment power-knowledge permeated the very political pulse of subaltern groups. Power, in this interpretation, is no longer repressive, but productive. What rankles here as a non sequitur, therefore, is the valorization of the community as an (impermeable?) indigenous site of resistance to colonial power-knowledge for Pandey demonstrates the inverse quite effectively.
Pandey's historical construct reveals a nuanced, shifting and interpenetrating complex of agency, structural limitations, and consciousness, all set against the dynamics of capitalist advance and ensuing socio-economic dislocation. It is important to note that attention is devoted to power where it coheres in political action and institutions of the state in what Foucault calls its 'terminal forms', while its dissipated omnipresence is also recognized. And, contrary to the Foucauldian dicta enumerated in "The History of Sexuality", power *is* acquired, held, maintained and exercised in the colonial construction of communalism in North India and subaltern interaction therewith.
Pandey also makes good headway in "The Construction of Communalism" with the problem of sources faced by Subalternist historiography by excavating the jewels of "Waqeat-o-Hadesat" (a historical manuscript penned in Urdu in the 1880s by one Ali Hasan) and a weaver's 'diary'. He interprets them by sifting the biases and juxtaposing them in tabular form against official records to reveal functions of communal and colonial historical memories. Similarly, in his chapter on mobilization, he analyzes changes in patias, or circular letters, between the 1880s and 1910s, used for enlisting the support of the Hindu community in Cow-Protection campaigns.
This is historical scholarship at its finest.

Nice Cloud Computing Architecture Book Which Plays By The Rules

This book was extremely challenging to give a rating to. I've never really seen a book like this which is a purely architectural book. There is zero code in this book, and no mentions of any vendors such as Amazon or Azure. It is very high level and if you are looking for high level explanations only then this will be the perfect book.

On one hand there are lots of useful explanations and diagrams throughout the book which show cloud computing architectures. While the diagrams start simple, the writing assumes you are involved in Cloud Computing as there are many acronyms which the reader is assumed to know. I had to look up some of them on Wikipedia. There is a glossary in Appendix A to help though.

Each design pattern follows a specific explanation pattern which consists of: Problem, Solution, Application, and Mechanisms. Some patterns just cover 1 or 2 pages while some take up to 10 pages. A lot of times many of the patterns sounded similar with slight modifications to the diagrams. The sections were well designed to keep patterns in the proper categories.

I was wondering if the authors modeled this book off the original Design Patterns book by the "Gang of Four". What made that book great was the authors showed the design patterns but they also showed the languages and code examples. In Cloud Computing Design Patterns I get the sense the authors played it safe; never mentioning a vendor and never describing the insides of any component. At the end of the book I got the high level view, but I wanted more details on certain components.

The main reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 is I felt this book catered too much to the certification crowd, and it reads too much like a textbook. I would have preferred freestyle writing as opposed to putting every single pattern into the same boxed description.

Patternization of Cloud Computing

The destiny of any "Design Patterns" book is to be compared with the one written by GoF. And "Cloud Computing Design Patterns" lost this comparison. After reading this book you wouldn't have any intellectual insights, you wouldn't try applying these patterns everywhere (whether it's necessary or not). The book is too dry. Perhaps because it was created as result of Cloud Certified Professional courses.

It's not really inspiring description but please consider that this book is still very good introduction into Cloud technics and terminology. Considering that Clouds are still developing area of IT there are many people who will find this book useful starting point. Especially non-technical IT professionals, i.e. managers and analysts - because this book intentionally doesn't contain technical details.

So why 3 stars? After reading 1/3rd of this book I realised that it's an example of patternization (=>transforming of some knowledge area using design patterns formalism).
Indeed Design Patterns is a venerable phenomenon. The process of finding a pattern is a mixture of invention and observation. Design pattern can't be trivial - otherwise why do you need it?
This book contains around 100 design patterns - how is this possible? First of all I see certain duplication (e.g. patterns "Synchronised Operating State" and "Virtual Server Auto Crash Recovery" can be generalised), secondly there are many idioms or technics but not full fledged patterns (e.g. first pattern - Shared Resources).
One more observation - the author intentionally doesn't use established design pattern names. For instance pattern "Broad Access" from the book is just a well known pattern "Adaptor".

Extremely superficial treatment, a complete disappointment.

This book was a complete disappointment, given some other reviews and the book ads themselves. I was looking for a book I could use as a backing reference for a grad/undergrad course on virtualization and cloud computing. It turned out to be a series of returning lists of basic facts, definitions and simple illustrations of step-by-step use cases and scenarios, everything treated in a very superficial fashion. Not really worth the time it took to browse over it.

To the Israeli prosecutor who interrogated him in 1961, Adolf Eichmann was a fanatical anti-Semite and a central figure in the annihilation of the Jews. To Hannah Arendt, he was a dim-witted bureaucrat, a cog in the machinery of destruction that was the Holocaust. British historian Cesarani, author of numerous books on the Holocaust and Jewish history, offers a more complex and nuanced portrait. Based on research into sources that were unavailable in the 1960s and on the most recent scholarly work on the Holocaust, Cesarani corrects the historical record on numerous issues. Contrary to popular myth, he says, Eichmann had a normal childhood and a socially and professionally successful young adulthood. Eichmann joined the SS not because he was a misfit but because, like so many German and Austrian middle-class men, he found the Third Reich a great engine of social mobility. Cesarani's biography is convincing on many counts. But in the end, the broad outlines of Arendt's portrait in her brilliant Eichmann in Jerusalem remain standing. Eichmann may have been more intelligent and skilled than she concluded, but he was the perfect expression of the highly bureaucratized and systematic killing process that the Nazis perfected. 8 pages of b&w photos, 2 maps. *Starred Review* Since Adolf Eichmann's trial and execution, scholars have looked to the events of the Holocaust logistician's life to assess the depth of his guilt and to speculate on the social mechanisms that turn individuals genocidal. Cesarani aims to strip away some of the mythology that such efforts have invariably generated. His thesis--that Eichmann's evil arose not from banal bean counting but from the bureaucrat's ambitious careerism--both builds upon and pointedly rejects Hannah Arendt's visceral Eichmann in Jerusalem and will certainly attract attention for doing so. Yet Cesarani does more than simply reopen the cog-or-monster debates that surrounded Arendt's assessment. Pointing out key moments in which Eichmann overcame his own humanity--swallowing his initial shock at the sight of mass shootings and finding recovery from a "total moral collapse" in Hungary in 1944--Cesarani emphasizes Eichmann's deliberate choices, habituation to power, and gradual desensitization to mass atrocity. In doing so, he presents a compelling vision of Eichmann that comports with our current awareness of the psychological dynamics of genocide. Similarly compelling is Cesarani's fascinatingly Darwinian description of the ever-changing bureaucratic structures of Nazism to which Eichmann was continually adapting as he rose in the ranks. Excellent account on Eichmann's life and 'career.'

Synthesizes numerous accounts and controversies surrounding the infamous 'desk murderer' of millions. Exceptionally well-written and exhaustively researched. Highly recommended. The back cover indicates that this book has eight pages go photographs; however, there was not one page of photos in the entire book, which was purchased brand new...not sure what that was about! Otherwise, just as promised.

About the Author
Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer became Frank Lloyd Wright’s apprentice at the Taliesin Fellowship in 1949. In 1957, he attended the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, returning in 1958 to continue his apprenticeship with Wright until his death in 1959. He remains at Taliesin to this day, as director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives, a vice-president of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and author of numerous publications on Wright's life and work.

Peter Gössel runs an agency for museum and exhibition design. For TASCHEN he published monographs on Julius Shulman, R.M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra as well as several titles in the Basic Architecture Series.

Superb Book on America's Greatest Architect - Highly Recommended

This is a superb book on America's Greatest Architect. As an Architect and Owner of a Frank Lloyd Wright house, I am very knowledgeable of FLW and I purchase every serious book published one FLW and his work. This wonderful book is loaded with superb photographs, superb drawings, many of which that have never been published before. Brooks Pfeiffer is a former Taliesin Apprentice and has had key responsibility for the operation of Talesin West. He has access to full depth of the FLW Archives and is incredibly knowledgeable of them. His other books on FLW are also well written and incredibly insightful. As an Architect living in a wonderful 1901 FLW House, I highly recommend this book.

A perfect overview of Frank Lloyd Wright's works

Initially, I was very nervous about getting this, as I already had a book cover FLW's career over all and plenty of other specialty books on his architecture, but I was pleasantly surprised by how through this book is. It covers more than the Robert McCarter volume from several decade ago and touches on the many facets of his career, and supporting it with a rich assemblage of original drawings and floorplans, and with new and old photography. The size of the book is large but far more easy to handle than the even larger "complete works."

Beautiful Book

Loved Wright's work forever, it's still relevant today in the era of track homes, suburban sprawl, and the ever-spreading sameness that seems to plague my eyeballs. His designs are still better than 90% of the modern architects out there. He captures that Art Deco meets the future vibe perfectly. Some lovely sketches in here too that I'd never seen.

Mostly just the same standard Netter drawings available in the atlas with brief descriptions of the relevant anatomy for certain cases. Does not add anything you can't get from the Netter atlas you used in med school. I would not buy it again.
