From the Inside Flap
From the Forewords:

The great promise of Web services will never be realized unless they are proven to be reliable, available, and have the appropriate level of security. Rosenberg and Remy are among the first to accurately portray Web Services Security by addressing how to apply the correct amount and types of security solutions.

The security issues that apply to Web services are similar to those surrounding other technology solutions and systems. Business applications deployed as Web services need to incorporate security building blocks including authentication, authorization, confidentiality, availability and reliability, fraudulent transactions, nonrepudiation, compliance, and auditing and monitoring.

Rosenberg and Remy have not only clearly defined Web Services Security, but they also have put together a great roadmap on how to properly deploy secure Web services at all levels. I hope you find this book as enlightening and informative as I did.

--M. Greg Shanton, AMS, Inc.

...This book makes it quite a bit easier to comprehend all the facets of Web Services Security; plus, it aggregates information on all the underlying and associated security technologies that WS-Security relies on, such as SSL, PKI, XKMS, SAML, and a host of other acronyms. It’s a reference book that I intend to keep handy.

In all my conversations with enterprise companies, security reigns as the number one concern in their plans to deploy Web services. And I can't blame them. Without a proper security infrastructure in place, Web services can expose sensitive corporate processes and information and leave a company open to risk and malfeasance--from both internal and external perpetrators.

Traditional network-layer and perimeter security tactics, such as SSL, proxy servers, and firewalls, aren't sufficient to protect IT systems anymore... Developers need to be prepared to start using WS-Security and SAML. This book is a great place to start.

Worthless For Programmers
By Jerry Hewett
Agree completely with all of the other reviewers in respect to practical working examples and detailed information. This is nothing more than a high-level overview of documentation and specifications you can easily find yourself on the internet. Look elsewhere (and yeah, I'm still looking myself) for solid information about how to design and deploy WS-* applications.

Good Overview of Web Services Security
By Gary E. Smith
This book is a good introduction to the application of security to Web Services and SOA. The authors focus on "message level" security versus "transport level" security, and its application to Web Services. The book explains standards: WS-Security, WS-Policy, WS-SecurePolicy and other current standards at the time of publishing (2004).

However these standards are constantly evolving and this book needs to be updated on a regular basis.

Review
"David Roochnik offers a well-paced and highly accessible narrative of ancient Greek thought. Retrieving the Ancients is a much-needed primer for teaching undergraduates the value of early philosophy."
–Daryl McGowan Tress, Fordham University

From the Back Cover
Retrieving the Ancients tells the story of the first philosophers in the West. Beginning with Thales, who correctly predicted an eclipse in 585 BC, and culminating in a discussion of the works of Aristotle, who died in 322 BC, Roochnik’s work provides a clear and engaging introduction to one of the most fertile periods in the history of human thought.

The author presents the history of Greek philosophy as an unfolding conversation, with the key thinkers engaged with and responding to their predecessors. Elegantly and compellingly written, Roochnik demonstrates the abiding relevance of this conversation to the modern reader. In retrieving the ancients, he argues, we help to illuminate ourselves.

Excellent introduction to Greek Philosophy (or philosophy in general)
By kaneda
This is an excellent introduction to philosophy, accessible to the layperson. Roochnik's dialectial style (where one view is presented, followed by it's opposite) weaves a great narrative of how philosophy changed from the Presocratics to Aristotle. I think this is a great way to teach philosophy... by showing how it contrasts with what came before.

I would advise the reader not to dismiss offhand the views of the Ancients because of their lack of scientific knowledge. Read about what they thought and why, given what they knew at the time. The Presocratics' purely philosophical reasonings led to a worldview very similar to the modern scientific one. Take Democritus for example who came up with atomic hypothesis.

Excellent introduction to Greek philosophy
By Greg Abrams
This is a really good book for those wanting to gain an understanding of the early Western ideas of philosophy. Roochnik guides the reader from the "founders" in the so-called Milesian School all the way through to Aristotle. Having read Plato earlier in life, it was quite interesting to learn how the dialectic that culminated in Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy initially formed in the Pre-Socratic days of Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, Heraclitus, Parmenides, and others. I'm especially fascinated with Heraclitus and his idea of flux...the perpetual becoming of all things. This idea is also presented in the Buddhist doctrine of annica, which outlines reality as fundamentally impermanent and indeed, in continuous motion and change.

Roochnik goes on to describe the many additional thoughts that grew out of the early naturalist ideas that were themselves responses to the mythic framework that had been at the forefront of Greek culture for centuries. A great deal of the contemplation surrounded notions of the arche, or First Principle, of the world and all creation. The naturalists of the Milesian School looked to the elements - fire, water, air, and earth - to find the foundation of all things, while other philosophers posited an "unmoved mover".

The ancient Greek thinkers offer a great view of our earliest inklings of higher thought as a species and the intellectual steps taken to arrive at the epistemological foundation that would ultimately lead to science as we know it today. In my opinion, Retrieving the Ancients is an excellent introduction to this area of study.

Great overview.
By Robster Lobster
This is an excellent overview of Greek philosophy up through Aristotle. Easy to read and understand, logically flowing, and concise. It focuses more on Aristotle and Plato, because they were the main attraction. It also shows the progression from the first Greek philosopher right up through this dynamic duo.

China Under Mao: A Revolution Derailed, by Andrew G. Walder

China’s Communist Party seized power in 1949 after a long period of guerrilla insurgency followed by full-scale war, but the Chinese revolution was just beginning. China Under Mao narrates the rise and fall of the Maoist revolutionary state from 1949 to 1976―an epoch of startling accomplishments and disastrous failures, steered by many forces but dominated above all by Mao Zedong.

“Walder convincingly shows that the effect of Maoist inequalities still distorts China today…[It] will be a mind-opening book for many (and is a depressing reminder for others).”
―Jonathan Mirsky, The Spectator

“Andrew Walder’s account of Mao’s time in power is detailed, sophisticated and powerful…Walder takes on many pieces of conventional wisdom about Mao’s China and pulls them apart…What was it that led so much of China’s population to follow Mao’s orders, in effect to launch a civil war against his own party? There is still much more to understand about the bond between Mao and the wider population. As we try to understand that bond, there will be few better guides than Andrew Walder’s book. Sober, measured, meticulous in every deadly detail, it is an essential assessment of one of the world’s most important revolutions.”

Review
Andrew Walder’s account of Mao’s time in power is detailed, sophisticated and powerful…Walder takes on many pieces of conventional wisdom about Mao’s China and pulls them apart…What was it that led so much of China’s population to follow Mao’s orders, in effect to launch a civil war against his own party? There is still much more to understand about the bond between Mao and the wider population. As we try to understand that bond, there will be few better guides than Andrew Walder’s book. Sober, measured, meticulous in every deadly detail, it is an essential assessment of one of the world’s most important revolutions. (Rana Mitter Times Literary Supplement 2016-01-13)

Walder convincingly shows that the effect of Maoist inequalities still distorts China today…In what will be a mind-opening book for many (and is a depressing reminder for others) Andrew Walder shows that in the decades after Mao, ‘China began the long process of recovering from the damage of his misrule.’ (Jonathan Mirsky The Spectator 2015-08-22)

Walder’s argument is forthright and his assessment of Mao’s legacy is unrelenting, and yet the abundance of detailed, well-researched descriptions of political campaigns, crackdowns, infighting, economic and demographic data, and everyday life of the Chinese people―combined with his masterful storytelling talent comparable to that of Jonathan Spence, another prominent Yale historian of China―makes the work a highly readable and excellent textbook of Mao’s China with refreshing insights and a great deal of provocative ideas. (Liu Kang China Review International 2014-05-01)

Perspicacious scholarship by the preeminent American historical sociologist working on the People’s Republic of China. A balanced, critical account of events of baffling complexity, and a sophisticated analysis of uniquely solid empirical data. If reading is indeed the basics for all learning, then this is the book to read in order to learn why Mao in the end accomplished so little of what he had hoped to achieve after 1949 and why his legacy remains so controversial. (Michael Schoenhals, Lund University)

This is a masterful synthesis of the literature on Mao Zedong’s China and of Walder’s own extensive sociological research. He combines Mao-centered political history with close attention to the organizational characteristics of the Communist Party, which explain its responsiveness to Mao Zedong’s often disastrous initiatives. In the author’s view, Mao was a ‘rigidly dogmatic leader with extremely narrow and outdated ideas.’ The book is replete with similarly incisive judgments. These will no doubt provoke controversy, but in the end, they are likely to be accepted. (Thomas P. Bernstein, Columbia University)

About the Author
Andrew G. Walder is Denise O'Leary and Kent Thiry Professor of Sociology, and Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Stanford University.

The one to read
By Philip s glamann
If you read one history of the Mao era, this should be it. The writing is clear, and Walder does a good job decoding the jargon and confusing events of the times. He's balanced where some other recent histories come off as shrill. The section on the Cultural Revolution is fascinating because it provides a good explanation of the bigger picture, yet still gives examples of what was happening at specific universities and high schools. For the first time I can say I have a decent understanding of what that bizarre event was about. Having checked out several other histories that cover the Mao period, I can say this one is the best. Maybe one day it'll be available for a little cheaper so it can have a wider readership.

The man and the system
By Andrew Batson
An excellent and very clearly written analytical history of China under socialism. Although Mao features prominently (how could he not?), this is not a book about Mao per se. Walder instead focuses on understanding the economic and social systems that the Communist Party created under Mao's leadership, and of the problems those systems in turn created. The book contains, among its many interesting parts, an excellent account of the early days of Communist rule and the gradual transition to the planned economy. The discussion of how China fit into the development of other Communist states globally is fascinating, and the explanation of how the planned economy actually worked is also a model of clarity and concision. Overall, highly recommended for anyone seeking an understanding of pre-reform China--though like too many academic books it is massively overpriced. At a more normal price it would have a better chance of gathering the wider readership it deserves.

I just completed a sociology course under this author, and I love the book for the clarity of writing. Many sociology books tend to use jargon or convoluted sentences to mask their ideas, but this is a book that will easily enlighten the reader on China's historical context. Only through understanding China's history, can we begin to understand the current government's obsession with stability at all costs.

Uncommon Grounds : The History of Coffee and How It Transformed Our World, by Mark Pendergrast

Uncommon Grounds tells the story of coffee from its discovery on a hill in Abyssinia to its role in intrigue in the American colonies to its rise as a national consumer product in the twentieth century and its rediscovery with the advent of Starbucks at the end of the century. A panoramic epic, Uncommon Grounds uses coffee production, trade, and consumption as a window through which to view broad historical themes: the clash and blending of cultures, the rise of marketing and the “national brand,” assembly line mass production, and urbanization. Coffeehouses have provided places to plan revolutions, write poetry, do business, and meet friends. The coffee industry has dominated and molded the economy, politics, and social structure of entire countries.Mark Pendergrast introduces the reader to an eccentric cast of characters, all of them with a passion for the golden bean. Uncommon Grounds is nothing less than a coffee-flavored history of the world.

Amazon.com Review
Since its discovery in an Ethiopian rainforest centuries ago, coffee has brewed up a rich and troubled history, according to Uncommon Grounds, a sweeping book by business writer Mark Pendergrast. Over the years, the beverage has fomented revolution, spurred deforestation, enriched a few while impoverishing the many, and addicted millions with its psychoactive caffeine. Coffee is now the world's second most valuable legal commodity, behind oil, according to Pendergrast, who is also author of For God, Country, and Coca-Cola.

"A good cup of coffee can turn the worst day tolerable, can provide an all-important moment of contemplation, can rekindle a romance," he writes. "And yet, poetic as its taste may be, coffee's history is rife with controversy and politics." For example, coffee bankrolled Idi Amin's genocidal regime in Uganda and the Sandinistas' revolution in Nicaragua. Uncommon Grounds provides some fascinating tidbits. Did you know that coffeehouses helped spawn the French and American revolutions? Or that coffee supplanted alcohol as a favorite breakfast drink in Britain in the late 1600s, and later became a patriotic American beverage after the Boston Tea Party? Pendergrast also details the rise and fall of regional coffee brands in the United States, the role of advertising in the industry, the global economic impact of coffee prices, and the recent emergence of specialty-coffee retailers--Starbucks, for example. Finally, he explores the social and environmental ramifications of coffee and highlights recent attempts to encourage a livable wage and environmental protection in coffee-producing nations such as Brazil. Pendergrast also includes an appendix on "how to brew the perfect cup." This wide-ranging book is a good read for those curious about the history and context behind that morning cup of coffee, as well as for those strictly interested in the business side of the industry. --Dan Ring

From Publishers Weekly
Caffeinated beverage enthusiast Pendergrast (For God, Country and Coca-Cola) approaches this history of the green bean with the zeal of an addict. His wide-ranging narrative takes readers from the legends about coffee's discoveryAthe most appealing of which, Pendergast writes, concerns an Ethiopian goatherd who wonders why his goats are dancing on their hind legs and butting one anotherAto the corporatization of the specialty cafe. Pendergrast focuses on the influence of the American coffee trade on the world's economies and cultures, further zeroing in on the political and economic history of Latin America. Coffee advertising, he shows, played a major role in expanding the American market. In 1952, a campaign by the Pan American Coffee Bureau helped institutionalize the coffee break in America. And the invention of the still ubiquitous Juan Valdez in a 1960 ad campaign caused name recognition for Colombian coffee to skyrocket within months of its introduction. The Valdez character romanticizes a very real phenomenonAthe painstaking process of tending and harvesting a coffee crop. Yet the price of a tall latte in America, Pendergrast notes, is a day's wage for many of the people who harvest it on South American hillsides. Pendergrast does not shy away from exploring such issues in his cogent histories of Starbucks and other firms. Throughout the book, asides like the coffee jones of health-food tycoon C.W. PostAwho raged against the evils of coffee and developed Postum as a substitute for regular brewAprovide welcome diversions. Pendergrast's broad vision, meticulous research and colloquial delivery combine aromatically, and he even throws in advice on how to brew the perfect cup. 76 duotones. Author tour.

From Library Journal
In this enlightening sociocultural chronicle, journalist Pendergrast (For God, Country & Coca-Cola) focuses on the popularity of coffee, especially in the Western Hemisphere. Coffee-drinking came late to the New World but was embraced almost immediately. It accompanied settlers on their way west (Native Americans referred to it as "black medicine") and was popular with soldiers in the Civil War and both world wars. Pendergrast's book is filled with stories about the rise (and fall) of coffee dynasties like Hills Brothers and Folgers and of how the fledgling advertising industry helped promote each. The book concludes with the advent of specialty firms like Starbucks. While it lacks the extensive industry overview that characterizes Gregory Dicum and Nina Luttinger's The Coffee Book: Anatomy of an Industry from Crop to the Last Drop (LJ 4/1/99), it provides substantial background on coffee production as well as making an entertaining yet serious attempt to understand the popularity of the beverage. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.ARichard S. Drezen, Washington Post News Research Ctr., Washington, DC

Decent book about coffee, but there is a better one available for free!
By grinndel98
If you are a new coffee fanatic, and are in to roasting your own coffee and wanting to learn all you can about coffee, go ahead and purchase this book, Pendergrast does a pretty good job of covering the coffee world from harvest to cup, and it is in an easy to read format. But I must say, I felt it was basically a "Cliff Note" of the all encompassing "Coffee Bible" that William H. Uker wrote almost a hundred years ago. Ukers book is titled "All About Coffee", and is the acknowledged complete work of every aspect of the coffee world. You can sometimes find the out of print book on Ebay, but it is usually over $150 for a worn out copy! I found that you can go to "Project Gutenberg" on the web and read the entire book, with all the full color hand drawn pictures, absolutely free of charge! Do it! You won't regret it!

History of Coffee is fascinating
By Cross Training
Came across this book at a coffee bar and it piqued my interest in coffee. Lengthy, so for time I read some other books about coffee first. I've been brewing coffee in a basic way for years and never thought of trying to improve my coffee brewing methods. Now, I am brewing coffee better in so many ways! This book gives a good history of coffee, which includes a bit of how to brew. I love this book.

I am a graduate and yet enjoy reading this book
By Denis
This is a must read book for anybody who is interested in human nature and what makes people tick. The narative is very engaging and it is packed with the latest research. It is very well presented and structured. When ever I read a section of this book I go away thinking about the topic. I am a graduate and yet enjoy reading this book. It is very strong on its teaching/pedagogy quality. And on its separate topics. It has a great applied section. I live in Europe and was pleased that it included European research.

"A Good Man Is Hard to Find" is Flannery O'Connor's most famous and most discussed story. O'Connor herself singled it out by making it the title piece of her first collection and the story she most often chose for readings or talks to students. It is an unforgettable tale, both riveting and comic, of the confrontation of a family with violence and sudden death. More than anything else O'Connor ever wrote, this story mixes the comedy, violence, and religious concerns that characterize her fiction.

This casebook for the story includes an introduction by the editor, a chronology of the author's life, the authoritative text of the story itself, comments and letters by O'Connor about the story, critical essays, and a bibliography. The critical essays span more than twenty years of commentary and suggest several approaches to the story--formalistic, thematic, deconstructionist-- all within the grasp of the undergraduate, while the introduction also points interested students toward still other resources. Useful for both beginning and advanced students, this casebook provides an in-depth introduction to one of America's most gifted modern writers.

The best book on the subject currently available
By SCHOEBEL
I am cardiologist and teacher of clinical examination of the heart and circulation for student and clinicians. Therefore I have done a lot of reading on the subject. The content presents peripheral signs as well direct phenomena in a well-blanced way. It is important that emphasis is put on peripheral signs as they often supply the deciding clues for the correct diagnosis. Peripheral signs are for example completely undervalued in German literature on the subject. What I miss a little bit is what you find in recent German books by H. Blömer and P. Franke(unfortunatly not published anymore)are special chapters on disease entities as for example aortic stenosis. This would nicely integrate the aformentioned knowledge of the general part to allow more description for natural course and grading of severity. Too bad the last chapters are still "under construction". The bibliography is excellent and gives a very good idea of how much has been done in the field. "Modern" cardiologists may therefore see how much scientific research has been undertaken and how well argued the book by Professor Constant is. The book presents an approach based on questions and answers. This may not be everybodies choice of an optimal didactic path. Nevertheless you can stick with it. Repetitions are helpful because they help to understand the complex materia. It is currently the best book on the market. It is also better than the book by J.K. Perloff because it takes a more scientific approach. A "must" for serious cardiologists.

A must have text on cardiovascular exam
By DL
Technology is not a substitute for bedside cardiovascular exam. This book is an excellent text on the fine art of physical exam and auscultation. The text is comprehensive but does a great job of explaining the underlying pathophysiology which is the key to understanding and predicting the physical exam findings. The diagrams and photographs are very good. The references are old but I did not run across any major discrepancies with the modern literature.
