John Wood discovered his passion, his greatest success, and his life's work not at business school or helping lead Microsoft's charge into Asia in the 1990s but on a soul-searching trip to the Himalayas. He made the difficult decision to walk away from his lucrative career to create Room to Read, a nonprofit organization that promotes education across the developing world. By the end of 2007, the organization will have established over 5,000 libraries and 400 schools, and awarded long-term scholarships to more than 3,000 girls, giving more than one million children the lifelong gift of education.

If you have ever pondered abandoning your desk job for an adventure and an opportunity to give back, Wood's story will inspire you. He offers a vivid, emotional, and absorbing tale of how to take the lessons learned at a hard-charging company like Microsoft and apply them to the world's most pressing social problems.

Amazon.com Review
John Wood discovered his passion, his greatest success, and his life's work--not at business school or leading Microsoft's charge into Asia in the 1990s--but on a soul-searching trip to the Himalayas. Wood felt trapped between an all-consuming career and a desire to do something lasting and significant. Stressed from the demands of his job, he took a vacation trekking in Nepal because a friend had told him, "If you get high enough in the mountains, you can't hear Steve Ballmer yelling at you anymore."

See how John Wood came to start Room to Read and write Leaving Microsoft to Change the World in this video clip: high bandwidth or low bandwidth

Instead of being the antidote to the rat race, that trip convinced John Wood to divert the boundless energy he was devoting to Microsoft into a cause that desperately needed to be addressed. While visiting a remote Nepalese school, Wood learned that the students had few books in their library. When he offered to run a book drive to provide the school with books, his idea was met with polite skepticism. After all, no matter how well-intentioned, why would a successful software executive take valuable time out of his life and gather books for an impoverished school?

But John Wood did return to that school and with thousands of books bundled on the back of a yak. And at that moment, Wood made the decision to walk away from Microsoft and create Room to Read-an organization that has donated more than 1.2 million books, established more than 2,600 libraries and 200 schools, and sent 1,700 girls to school on scholarship-ultimately touching the lives of 875,000 children with the lifelong gift of education.

Leaving Microsoft to Change the World chronicles John Wood's struggle to find a meaningful outlet for his managerial talents and entrepreneurial zeal. For every high-achiever who has ever wondered what life might be like giving back, Wood offers a vivid, emotional, and absorbing tale of how to take the lessons learned at a hard-charging company like Microsoft and apply them to one of the world's most pressing problems: the lack of basic literacy.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. It's a rare business book that not only provides savvy insights for better business practices but transcends the category altogether, to rank as an infectiously inspiring read. Wood takes the reader on an engaging journey from his life as a rather ordinary marketing director at Microsoft through the transformative decision to launch the nonprofit organization Room to Read (www.roomtoread.org), which has created more than 2,000 schools and libraries for children across Asia. From his first trip to Nepal, where he was struck by the country's 70% illiteracy rate, through his courageous decision to leave Microsoft, to the logistics of growing and expanding the Room to Read initiative, Wood endears himself to the reader with his introspection and honesty. Crediting his former employer with giving him the business skills and drive to aim high, he outlines the concrete steps he took to make his vision a reality. Marked by sincerity and savvy, this is the kind of book that business colleagues will discuss with their acquaintances, spouses and friends. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—As much about business practices as about personal discovery, this book lives up to its name as it details how the author traded in the executive lifestyle to champion his own nonprofit organization, Room to Read. Wood describes his life at Microsoft as a marketing director for Australia and, later, China. Young business enthusiasts familiar with Steve Ballmer and Bill and Melinda Gates will be entertained by the glimpse into their respective management styles and by the author's efforts to pattern himself in their likeness. He also describes his lack of personal fulfillment and his eventual redirection, brought on by a visit to the mountains of Nepal. With vignettes from profitable fundraising activities for Room to Read, he documents how to successfully start up a nonprofit organization and how to sustain it. Originally named Books for Nepal, Wood's organization focused initially on providing books to the disadvantaged schools of Nepal, but eventually he expanded its scope (and renamed it) so as to include the building of schools, Tsunami relief, and educational programs for the children of Asia. Corporate-minded adolescents interested in giving back to society will enjoy this title and glean practical advice from it.—Brigeen Radoicich, Fresno County Office of Education, CA

Wow, what a story!
By Real Happy
I ran across this book by accident, and I never heard of John Wood or his organization “Rooms to Read.” But wow, it’s a story worth reading. It touched my soul.

I wish I had his courage. This guy knew his current life style wasn’t working, so he did something about it without any real security to fall back on. Not only did he leave a well-paying position at Microsoft, but he also left the love of his life. She wanted to follow her heart in the corporate world, and he wanted to do service work in Nepal, which would give him the opportunity to help some of the poorest people in the world with an education. They still loved each other, but their desires and choices put them in different parts of the world. He just knew he had to be true to himself.

Many of his friends and family thought he was crazy and would regret making this decision, but he knew it was the right thing to do. John always wanted to purchase one of those beautiful homes in San Francisco overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. But after seven years, with all of his success at “Rooms to Read,” he shared that he still didn’t have a life’s partner, nor could he afford one of those beautiful homes overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. Nevertheless, he knew, he was right where he belonged.

I wish he had shared more about the staffing and training of those who taught and worked in these schools and libraries, but I’ll still give this book a five star rating.

If you love reading, this is your book!
By S. Furlong
The author does an excellent job of describing his moment of discovery of the fact that where you are born can, and probably will, determine your opportunities in life. Especially true in the poorest countries economically, though they may be rich in human capital. His realization that he can make an appreciable difference in the lives and futures of the children without a huge investment of time or money, just by asking others to join in, is both a revelation and a springboard to do more. The positive momentum that is created with the enthusiasm of all involved, and the explosive growth of what started as books for one school, begs the question of why not every child?

Reading the stories of people that he encountered, you get a sense of someone perhaps in the next town, rather than halfway around the world. And that is the story that John Wood is telling, that each of these children deserves a chance to learn, to get an education, to participate in making our world a better place for everyone. He has created the organization to make it happen, we just need to get on board and work together to ensure it does! If you can't imagine not being able to read, if you remember not wanting to put down that good book, if you were one who read by flashlight under the covers as a child, you will want to read this book and share it with others.

Strong personal story, but needs more context
By Mec
John Wood went from a high-energy, GSD-focussed career at Microsoft to a high-energy, GSD-focussed charity founder. (GSD is an acronym for "Getting S*** Done", and the author uses the term several times.)

This is not so unusual: many successful business people, from Andrew Carnegie to Henry Ford to Bill Gates, have had "second act" careers as philanthropists. Wood simply started his early.

This book offers a first-person view of both careers with more chapters for the latter. I'm a fan of memoirs by successful people writing about their areas of expertise. This book delivers in full. In particular, I enjoyed the glimpses of Wood's network of high-energy, hyper-effective friends and colleagues. I aspire to be more like that.

On the downside, Wood writes as if he invented the idea of founding a charity. This is mostly okay, because this book is Wood's story. If you want more stories, read more books. However, Wood also neglects an important area: measuring and reporting results. Sometimes he mentions milestones such as number of libraries built, but he doesn't report anything such as improved scores on college entrance exams. In this age, charities should be accountable for results -- I'd like to see a chapter or two about that, with some actual stats.

On balance, though, I enjoyed this memoir about a go-getter who has built thousands of schools and libraries.

A great addition to text books.
By Laura
I use these cards as a study guide and a reference tool. If the book you are using doesn't explain things well, these cards will help you to understand some complicated concepts by using great graphics. By using the graphics on these cards along with my text book I could easily visualize what was being explained. The cards are much more portable than a large text book, so I was able to take the ones I needed with me to study anywhere.
They are easy to refer back to now that my class is over. If I need to look a certain concept up, I can see all of the vital information easier and faster than going through all the extra information that a text book provides.

Pretty decent.

Not as handy as the Netter's anatomy flash cards but still pretty essential in my success in physiology. It's tough to put a lot of physiology concepts into this sort of paper flash card format.

Great tool for A & P Class/Lab
By Ace
I use these more than the book, they have numbers without the answers on one side so you learn the parts and can turn over to verify you are correct. It has a little more info than an into course requires, but the advanced classes are yet to come and I love these cards. You can select the exact ones you need to work on for each chapter or lab and leave the rest at home in the box. Love them!

Review

"I find the concept for this approach to teaching undergraduate research methods and statistics innovative and exciting. The idea of ‘core’ texts supplemented by satellite volumes covering specific, important topics makes absolute sense."

(Barbara Heyl)

About the Author

Paul D. Allison, Ph.D., is Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania where he teaches graduate courses in methods and statistics. He is also the founder and president of Statistical Horizons LLC which offers short courses on a wide variety of statistical topics.

He has published eight books and more than 60 articles on topics that include linear regression, log-linear analysis, logistic regression, structural equation models, inequality measures, missing data, and survival analysis.

Much of his early research focused on career patterns of academic scientists. At present, his principal research is on methods for analyzing longitudinal data, especially those for determining the causes and consequences of events, and on methods for handling missing data.

Good explanations; Very little practice problems.
By Jaewoo Kim
This book provides a good conceptual explanation of regression. Mind you, it is still very dry, but that's the nature of the subject matter.

The book, unfortunately, uses minimal examples to explain regression and has little to no practice problems. As with all mathematical subjects, I believe the key to understanding is practice and application of the mathematical principles to problems. In that regard, the book left much wanting.

To be fair, the author uses few key examples to explain and apply regression principles. But I felt there needed to be much more.

This is a paperback and a short book. It is rather skimpy. For that, I felt the price of the book was rather high. But then again, books on regression analysis aren't exactly best-sellers and I suppose the price needs to be high to make-up for the lack of demand. Still, I can't say the book was worth the price.

If you want to understand regression better, then this is a worthwhile book. If you want to supplement your good understanding of regression, then I recommend this book. If you want a book that will allow you to understand AND learn regression through practice problems, then look elsewhere.

Good introduction to regression
By not a natural
This easy-to-understand text is useful as preliminary or ancillary reading in a first course in regression analysis. For students having trouble with Gujarati, Wooldridge, Chatterjee and Hadi, or other standard introductory texts, the material contained in this brief account will almost certainly be helpful.

Allison's text provides the sort of overview that enables students to place detailed treatments of specific topics in a coherent context. This helps them understand just what they are trying to accomplish with all the tests, correctives, and relatively advanced analytical procedures that make up the bulk of usual textbooks on this widely used and increasingly technical topic.

The underlying logic of regression analysis can be understood by readers who lack what is sometimes referred to as mathematical maturity. This is especially pertinent with regard to multiple regression and the crucial issue of statistical control. The author does a fine job of making this about as clear as it can be.

good buy
By Hongyu Zhang
I hesitated when I saw "undergraduate" since it is actually listed as a textbook in my graduate class. I ended up buying anyway, and I really like it! For me, the first half is a quick over view and the second half is a nice summary of what I have learned before and quick making-up of something I was not aware of. After all, I would say it is a keeper.
