200 full-color photographs and illustrations does not mean one photograph and 199 1x1 inch black and white sketches.

According to the information about the book, "This resource, with over 200 full-color photographs and illustrations depicts a variety of symbols..." This information is incorrect. The book has a single full color photograph on the front cover. The rest of the illustrations are microscopic depictions and the scale does not allow any detail to show. It is a very poor resource for anyone interested in these symbols.

The information also states, "The book shares the origin and meaning of hundreds of symbols of the Christian faith, as well as fascinating stories behind many symbols." The stories are at most three sentences long, give very little detail and are scant for the most part. I have returned this book, and will continue searching for a better resource.

I would like to note that I was looking for something that I could use as a jumping off point to design ecclesiastical garments and furnishings, and this book is not even at the level of jumping off the side of a pool. I didn't expect a high dive at the price point, but a diving board at all would have been nice.

not so good as the first one but still great

I'm a little disappointed that GM was the writer of this, because this was not so good as the first one. I think that I must share the opinion that I read, about GM is just awesome writing about Chaos characters and of course, you can see that in the loyalist pre heresy version of Abaddon that is presented here. to some one new to the universe of WH40K, you can see that he will be one of the bad guys.

the thing that I complain is about Horus. he present a really weak Horus, I think is because he want to make him evil as he will be but he must put him something like a victim because in this book he still is loyal to the Emperor. so, instead of present a loyalist primarch that represent the awesomeness of the imperium and the good guys, or the lost by chaos future representation of all evil primarch, he is stuck in the middle and I think that must be real hard for him, write about it. maybe if he wrote the third book, his work could be just awesome about Horus, but here was a little weak.

for the rest, is just great, I love the way that represents Abaddon, maybe a little bit Khorny, but hey, is the freaking future supreme lord of Chaos, come on!! =DD

in general lines, this book is great, I wish to give 4.5 stars but no middle points so, 4 will be.

Horus Heresy, Book Two

Iterators and remembrancers have not yet become an official part of the Crusade fleets. The civilians and scholars still follow the expeditionary forces, moving among them and writing of the glorious truths of the Imperium. Even Warmaster Horus decides to choose a personal documentarist, Petronella Vivar.

Horus is tricked into leading his men to Davin's moon where he is critically injured. Petronella witnesses as Horus falls unconscious from his wounds. While Horus is still unaware, he is transferred to a place of sorcery and the void. It is there Horus is swayed in his thinking to Chaos.

Garviel Loken, the Company Commander of the Sons of Horus Legion, and Tarik Torgaddon watch in horror as events play out before them. When Horus falls from his wounds, the Astartes begin to fall apart in confusion. Loken and Torgaddon are no exceptions to this. The death of the universe may just have begun.

**** In book two, author Graham McNeill continues the series of the Horus Heresy. As talented as I believe this author to be, I cannot help but notice the huge changes in the mood swings and attitude of Horus. The character is no longer as careful and seldom checks for facts any more. No longer does The Mournival whisper words of wisdom and advice in the Warmaster's ear. To me, it did not even seem to be a gradual change. The character is simply not believable to be the same Horus from the first book's foundation. I found the men of the Astarte to be just as unbelievable in their undisciplined behavior while Horus is in the void. Thankfully, that did not continue as long as I thought it might. Everything else is done well. The ending is a bit rushed to me, but still well done. Small threads (such as mentioning "the saint") are planted for book three to pick up and carry onward, just as the first book left small threads for book two's continuation. I look forward to more! ****

Diamond in the Rough

Graham McNeill is one of the major innovators at The Black Library. His books are always filled with the kind of "fluff" that excites Warhammer enthusiasts and I consider him the speartip of Warhammer creativity.

For the most part I am thrilled by his creative inventions. His descriptions of the various planets and societies are inspired and his descriptions of Chaos rituals are among the best in the Warhammer universe.

I would have given this novel five stars but for some niggling complaints, which I am going to enumerate out of a certain frustration.

My frustration arises from the following: (1) he usually employs multiple points of view (a practice endemic in Warhammer writing). This is not bad in itself but he employs short passages that break the flow of the writing and slows the narrative. Tolstoy uses multiple points of view but he lets the narrative develop and flow, allowing the reader to become involved in the narrative. Frankly, I want to be unaware of the change in point of view; I want to sink so deeply into the novel that I am living it. If a novelist shifts back and forth in short machine gun like bursts, it disrupts the narrative flow. This works in a movie; it doesn't work well in a novel. (2) He tends to use anachronistic expressions that distract from the narrative. For instance, twice Horus, the great Warmaster, says to his Mournival- "You are a sight for sore eyes." (3) Horus acts child-like over and over again (but so did Hitler and Stalin, you say), even spilling his guts to a journalist in an attempt to immortalize himself in print, when he thinks he is going to die.

In addition, certain plot choices confused me. More particularly, I didn't understand the motivations behind the invasion of the Davin moon. For instance, why would the Legion transport Titans to the moon to battle an army of the undead, which they dispatch with a blow to the head? Was Horus' hubris such that he saw every battle as an insult to his pride and honor? Was it necessary to display the almost incalculable strength of the Legion against a rebellious brother? Or was it necessary to introduce the Titans into the plot? Additionally, at the end of the novel,why does Horus abandon the crusade to attack a potentially friendly world? Does he seek their technology or has Chaos already taken hold of him and he wants simply to kill and maim?

Irrespective of these criticisms, I say bravo to McNeill. He took the threads of the Horus Rising and substantially raised the level of discourse.

About the Author
Gerard J. Tortora is Professor of Biology and former Coordinator at Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ, where he teaches human anatomy and physiology as well as microbiology. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and his master's degree in science education from Montclair State College. He is a member of many professional organizations, such as the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), National Education Association (NEA), and the Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists (MACUB).

Bryan Derrickson is Professor of Biology at Valencia Community College in Orlando, Florida, where he teaches human anatomy and physiology as well as general biology and human sexuality. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Morehouse College and his Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Duke University. Bryan's study at Duke was in the Physiology Division within the Department of Cell Biology, so while his degree is in Cell Biology his training focused on physiology. At Valencia, he frequently serves on faculty hiring committees. He has served as a member of the Faculty Senate, which is the governing body of the college, and as a member of the Faculty Academy Committee (now called the Teaching and Learning Academy), which sets the standards for the acquisition of tenure by faculty members. Nationally, he is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT).

Anatomy and Physiology Key to Great Grades

As a Nursing student, you need to take a mandatory Anatomy and physiology course to actively pursue in the study of Nursing. This class being one of the hardest "weed out" classes that Nursing students need to take, we need a book to show what the body does, how it works, and why. Principles of Anatomy and Physiology 14e binder edition does exactly this. Reading this book has helped me develop an understanding for Human Anatomy and Physiology. With the in depth explanations of processes the body undergoes, thought out thorough definitions, and diagrams, pictures and tables to make connections to the readings; all have yet to cease to impress me as I continue to read the book. This binder version is more affordable than the hard copy and comes with the same quality work inside. I recommend getting a 3 inch binder along with the purchase to keep it in great condition throughout the usage of this book. This is a GREAT BOOK and I recommend it to anyone interested in Anatomy and Physiology of the Human body.

I really like it. You're able to highlight it

I am currently renting this as a Kindle digital version on my laptop. I really like it. You're able to highlight it, take notes, make note cards, and you can copy and paste it so it makes note taking much easier and you can easily search words. This was also much cheaper than either buying or renting a hard copy of the book and you don't have to deal with shipping. I'm a big fan of going digital so I highly recommend this.

No ACCESS code

I specifically purchased the loose leaf edition new despite having a few other options because I wanted the access code to be included... it is not, however there was no way to know this until after the shrink wrap seal was broken, making the item nonreturnable. The book itself may be great, but at the moment it was a very expensive mistake.
I did research the question of whether the access code would be included and found only a statement that "used items are not guaranteed to include the access code".... meaning the new one should??? This one does not

Amazing

This is my first coloring book since childhood. I used to do paint by numbers on and off for years, but they got too expensive for me. This coloring book (from the hours I spent searching on Amazon) is very unique and original. The designs are very artistic, detailed, and intricate. You can tell the artist spent a lot of time on them. You just want to stare at the page for days to see all the little details.

I just finished coloring my first page (uploading image, and will upload each I finish). I removed the binding of the book with an iron, scan each page one at a time and print them so in case I screw up or want to color a design differently later on, I can. Plus I find coloring on inkjet paper with sharpies to be smoother and more satisfying.

I SERIOUSLY hope the author/illustrator makes more of these books. I will buy them for sure.

I love this coloring book! I am so sick of coloring silly pictures with my five year old so looked into something more grin up. The pages are thick and single sided so perfect for markers. It's not just patterns and flowers or animals. All kinds of stuff to color! Love it! Buy this one!

I love the fact that this coloring book let me create a world. Most coloring books are random geometric shapes or flowers. You can color it, but it doesn't let you be creative. These pages come alive and tell stories!

"... If you wish to expel religion from our European civilization you can only do it through another system of doctrines, and from the outset this would take over all the psychological characteristics of religion, the same sanctity, rigidity and intolerance, the same prohibition of thought in self-defence."

(This is not Freud speaking, but his "imagined antagonist." Still, I admire the equanimity with which Freud states objections to his thesis. This too, is more than we get from other militant atheists:)

... There is another point in which I wholeheartedly agree with you. It is, to be sure, a senseless proceeding to try and do away with religion by force and at one blow—more especially as it is a hopeless one. The believer will not let his faith be taken from him, neither by arguments nor by prohibitions. And even if it did succeed with some, it would be a cruel thing to do. A man who has for decades taken a sleeping draught is naturally unable to sleep if he is deprived of it. That the effect of the consolations of religion may be compared to that of a narcotic is prettily illustrated by what is happening in America. There they are now trying—plainly under the influence of petticoat government—to deprive men of all stimulants, intoxicants and luxuries, and to satiate them with piety by way of compensation. This is another experiment about the result of which we need not be curious.

I admire the brevity, and dare I say, the grandeur of this book, written by Freud when he was seventy. His theory of society is positively Hobbesian:

"... Insecurity of life, an equal danger for all, now unites men into one society, which forbids the individual to kill and reserves to itself the right to kill in the name of society the man who violates this prohibition. This, then, is justice and punishment."

but mostly well-meant and easy to read

I wasn't going to review this book, but there are too many reviews that seem to miss what exactly The Future of an Illusion is about. To keep this short in the spirit of the book, the work is an attempt by Freud to show that religion is an illusion that has been outgrown by humanity over time. He concludes with the hope that civilization could put more stock in secular education, so that we may grow intellectually and reduce the errors in our thinking.

Freud's style of writing is a bit hostile at times, but mostly well-meant and easy to read. I spent a good portion of the book noting how Freud seems to relish the notion of bringing up sex and the need for fatherly love in seemingly unrelated topics. He takes a few logical leaps throughout the essay, but overall, he mostly proves his point, and if you want a quick, narrow view of how the father of psycho-analysis viewed religion, you should check this book out.

The illusion of religion according to Freud

Throughout this book Freud responds to would-be criticism to his views and claims which i thought were all apt arguments against the points Freud was trying to make. This was definitely one book that i was sad to see end. I felt that a lot more could have been said and that it was cut a bit short. While the ending quote, stated by another reviewer, seems to draw the most important pieces of this book together and ends it well, it was still disappointingly short. Keep in mind, Freud's opinions and conclusion that are illustrated throughout this book, and all his others are all products of his many years as the father of psychoanalysis.

The topic of this book seems to be very touchy, something you can't talk about with people, Freud basically states that you're not going to convince people otherwise when they strongly believe in something, as people often do religion. As an Atheist myself, i was more compelled to believe and be encouraged by these arguments and views on religion.

The approach Freud took towards this is not merely the effect of religion on the single person, but on a civilization. Why religion comes about, and why it seems to be needed by that civilization. This is a larger form of religious effect than i had previously read about, which just made this book even more interesting to me.

The most interesting point that was made, in my opinion, is Freud's argument for law over commandment or rule. As an Atheist, i always considered the most important role of a religion on a society (I'll use Christianity as my example) was to employ strong unchangeable, yet simple and morally correct rules, or commandments. These created no 'wiggle' room for any believer, it was either do not kill, or go to hell and suffer eternal damnation. This added a long term incentive with, to the believer, strong consequences. However, in the view of Sigmund Freud, it is actually better to have this as a law, rather than a commandment, because "the civilization will focus on bettering the law rather than abolishing it." I'm strongly inclined to change my view on this topic after reading this book. When given and unchangeable rule, such as a commandment, people will naturally appose it, and seek its destruction. While this is not always true, the basis for this argument makes sense. When you were young, and your parents made an irrefutable law that you are not to eat chocolate at seven in the evening, all you could think about is wanting to eat that chocolate, even though you knew it would keep you awake all night. If this was NOT an irrefutable law, but was just a rule that is somewhat changeable, something that has a middle ground, people will naturally seek to better this rule, rather than get rid of it completely. I'm certain there are arguments against this train of thought, as there is always an opposing force. This book has introduced several opinions that differ even my own. Most of which is find extremely fascinating as they are yet another way of looking at things.

Overall, this is a very well written book. As all Freud's book, it takes a bit of thought while reading it, and it's not recommended for light reading. Though if you're a believer of any religion with a relatively open mind, read this book, think about it, then move on.

As per my golden principle when it comes to any religion that worships or believes in a god or gods. A deity is merely a concept, though it is a special kind if concept, it's one that cannot be proven, not can it be labeled impossible. It is something we'll never know the truth about, and i proudly recognize that fact.

If anyone actually took the time to read this review, I thank you for your time and patience, and enjoy the book!

Eragon, a young farm boy, finds a marvelous blue stone in a mystical mountain place. Before he can trade it for food to get his family through the hard winter, it hatches a beautiful sapphire-blue dragon, a race thought to be extinct. Eragon bonds with the dragon, and when his family is killed by the marauding Ra'zac, he discovers that he is the last of the Dragon Riders, fated to play a decisive part in the coming war between the human but hidden Varden, dwarves, elves, the diabolical Shades and their neanderthal Urgalls, all pitted against and allied with each other and the evil King Galbatorix. Eragon and his dragon Saphira set out to find their role, growing in magic power and understanding of the complex political situation as they endure perilous travels and sudden battles, dire wounds, capture and escape.

In spite of the engrossing action, this is not a book for the casual fantasy reader. The odd blue "stone" he found has hatched into a dragon. He and Safira are able to communicate telepathically, so even when they are parted during their high and low adventures with magicians, dwarves, inhuman monsters sent to do the evil king's bidding, elves, and simply crafty humans, they are able to work together as a team. Paolini has received some popular press because of his own youth, and indeed some of the details here are naiveâ€"Medieval common people certainly didn't retire to their own personal bedrooms!â€"but overall he has designed a well integrated epic, complete with a Latinate language, politically acute issues, and well-realized emotions. Narrator Gerard Doyle's extensive repertoire of voices provides a compelling atmosphere that will hold the audience's attention through Eragon's travails. His slightly British accent lends just the right storytelling texture, making the audio performance an extension of the story itself. I thoroughly enjoyed Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance of Chris Paolini's The Inheritance Cycle series. Originally intended as a trilogy, their bestselling success spawned a fourth book, which was a very welcome addition. I have since handed them down to my nephew where they are enjoying a new life with a new generation.

Though they've been out for quite awhile now, I have to be honest and say I bought them years ago, and only got them off the shelf a few months ago. Having been grown up as an avid fan of Dungeons and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, and the usual fantasy fare, I was pretty excited to re-enter that universe.

These have been reviewed ad infinitum; so I think I can really only add to the discussion my own experience with the four book as a 47-year-old reader. I was a bit concerned that they might be written a bit too much for kids, as I'd heard they were. But, I have to say, I was definitely misinformed. These are as applicable to adults as the Harry Potter or Hunger Games books or any other well-written fantasy tales that were initially marketed to the teen reader market, but obviously found runaway success with readers from all age brackets.

In short, each of the four books was a very fun read, and I would absolutely recommend the series to anyone with an interest in the fantasy genre.

I wish I had read it sooner

A very engaging read. Don't be deterred by criticism. I did not read this series for a long time after hearing much criticism of the young author and now regret that I did not read it sooner.

There is a review on here stating that the book is only decent for a 17 year old to have written but not an adult, and that is nonsense. You would not know it was written by a 17 year old unless you were told and it is criticized unfairly because of his age. He does not "borrow" fantasy elements from more widely known authors any more than those widely known authors borrowed from ancient fairy tails. Tolkien and Le Guinn were not any more creative, many fantasy elements in their stories go back to before their stories as well. But this author is judged much more harshly and unjustly because he is young by people who are unable to form their own opinions and blindly judge the worth of a book by its acclaim. And the fact that this book is not a cult classic such as Tolkein's should not affect its merit.

It is a very good book and is only insulted by those jealous of the young author's success.

Not bad

I had been looking forward to reading this book for a long time. It goes in to a LOT of detail and description which is kind of fun if you like imaginary dragon worlds. The book does not seem to have a set direction though, as in not much happens to progress the story by the end of the book. I found myself a little bored with it about 3/4 of the way through, but finished it anyway. I know there are other books in the series, but the first one did not leave me wanting to rush out and buy the next one or the complete series. I might borrow them from the library, but not purchase them.

Loved it from the start.

When I started reading this I was intrigued by her secret, she was a good girl who tried to do the right thing only to have justice let her down. Now she was scrambling to find a way out of the problem so her mom isn't hurt. When she meets Giovanni its seems to be the answer to her prayers, she has no idea how much. Wheen they both develop feelings and she finally opens up to him everything falls into place, I laughed and cried reading this Love all of Penny Wydlers books, well done .

Grade 4-7-This installment in the woeful tale of the unlucky Baudelaire orphans takes them (via the trunk of Count Olaf's car, unbeknownst to him) to the Caligari Carnival in the middle of the hinterlands. Madame Lulu has used her crystal ball in the past to help him find the children after their narrow escapes, but this time he also wants her to discern the truth about whether or not either of their parents is still alive. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny disguise themselves as freaks so that they can stay at the carnival and hopefully get to the crystal ball before the Count does. They suffer the indignation of performing in their new roles, face off a bloodthirsty mob, and escape from a pit of hungry lions. New and deviously entertaining characters are added to the cast, including Kevin the ambidextrous man, Colette the contortionist, and Hugo the hunchback. The humor is as sharp as ever, the suspense will keep readers at the edge of their seats, and the cliff-hanger ending will make them eagerly await the next episode.

Violet and Klaus masquerade as a two-headed carnival freak, and baby Sonny masquerades as Chabo the Wolf Baby, and they share in the humiliation of the other "freaks" (an ambidextrous man, a female contortionist, and a man with a hunchback). When one of the performers is to be thrown to hungry lions, the children find themselves faced with a terrible dilemma. Children faithful to the series won't be surprised when the book does NOT end happily; nor will they find it unusual that Snicket continues to entertain with witty asides and a satirical point of view. The overall story moves along nicely toward the conclusion of the planned 13-volume series; at the same time, the author successfully uses this book as a platform to communicate a good deal about individuals who belittle others and what it feels like to be on the end of the horrible barbs. Slightly dark series but also enjoyable

As with the rest of the series this has some dark aspects. My 8 year old loves the whole series. At the end of the previous book in this series the children stow away in the trunk of Count Olaf's car, which is a pretty bold move considering he is the villain. They end up at the Caligary Carnival, which sounds like another dismal location! They pose as "freaks" with disguises in order to learn more about VFD and the possible whereabouts of their surviving parent. The children continue to find that adults cannot be counted on to rescue them and they use their own resources to solve problems they encounter. In this story we have more of an inside view of Olaf and his henchmen who seem less and less scary and more and more idiotic as the children are able to fool them. The children also consider whether their counter measures are equally evil as Olaf's. The morality of what they do matters to them. I would say that overall this series gives kids an introspective look at making ethical choices, using their own resources to solve problems, and the need to be cautious with some adults who's motives may not be trust worthy.

Fun story for any age!

I suppose I should mention that I'm an adult in her mid-30's, but I really enjoy these books! They're all very quick reads, but the writing is excellent and the stories are creative and interesting. Dark and gloomy for sure, but still fun to read. This particular story follows the unlucky Beaudelaire children to a carnival where the devious Count Olaf continues to plot against them and schemes to claim their immense fortune. Really fun books! I think I like them so well because I would have absolutely loved them as a kid, but I enjoy this series quite a bit.

New characters!

Having new characters, who would play an important role in the story, always cherish the story.
This series starts to become a slight dull story because every time the episode starts and ends the same (bad beginning, tense in the middle, and unfortunate ending), but the new characters give Violet, Klaus, and Sunny give a hint regarding the mysteries of the fire and of the secret that Baudelaire parents hid from their children.
Also, the reader would enjoy reading what would happen in the relationship Count Olaf, his girlfriend Esme, and the new character Madame Lulu who calls Olaf dearly.

I've got to be honest. I didn't love this book. I thought it was very vague. Generally, her advice is: Show compassion, be flexible, don't get bogged down in the details of the child's trauma, and have clear and consistent expectations in your classroom. She talks about the 6 communications steps to use with your students, but I didn't think they were explained clearly with examples. Think of this book more as a primer, particularly if you are new to working with students.

I cant stress how great this book is for any educator. I currently work in a Title I elementary school and as soon as I finished the book I sent out an email to my entire staff encouraging them to read it. It's that good!
Kristin Souers’s background is in mental health and Pete Hall’s resume includes teaching and administrator. The combination equates to realistic ways to use the information they are sharing, which if we are being honest doesn’t always seem to happen in professional development books. Part of why it feels do-able is because they encourage self-reflection and questioning when you find yourself in situations with a student, which I love. They also take time to explain what trauma is and what to look for in the classroom.

Do You Work in a Title 1 School? This book is for you!

This book is a must read for anyone working with students facing trauma. This book presents educators with important background information around trauma and its affects on the human brain in an easy to read format. Educators are then presented with specific tools and strategies to empower students and create a trauma-sensitive school environment. I have just purchased this book for a book study with our staff. Thank you, Kristin Souers, for your dedication to this work.
