The Vacuum Interrupter: Theory, Design, and Application, by Paul G. Slade

Drawn from the author's more than four decades of practical experience in the industry, The Vacuum Interrupter: Theory, Design, and Application first discusses the design and manufacture of the vacuum interrupter before delving into its general application.

The book begins with a review of the vacuum breakdown process and what to consider when developing a design for a high-voltage application. It then discusses the vacuum arc and how its appearance changes as a function of current. This section concludes with an overview of existing contact materials, a summary of their advantages and disadvantages, an analysis of vacuum interrupter contact design, and considerations for the manufacture of vacuum interrupters. The next section on application describes the interruption process for low- and high-current vacuum arcs, examines the voltage escalation event that occurs if the contact gap is very small at the ac current zero, and explores the phenomenon of contact welding. It also studies the application of vacuum interrupters to switch load currents, circuit breakers, and reclosers.

Owing to the increasing need for environmentally friendly interrupting systems, the development of vacuum interrupters will only intensify over time. With extensive references in each chapter for further exploration, this comprehensive guide provides essential, up-to-date knowledge to fully understand this vital technology.

Hacktivism and Cyberwars: Rebels with a Cause?, by Tim Jordan, Paul Taylor

As global society becomes more and more dependent, politically and economically, on the flow of information, the power of those who can disrupt and manipulate that flow also increases. In Hacktivism and Cyberwars Tim Jordan and Paul Taylor provide a detailed history of hacktivism's evolution from early hacking culture to its present day status as the radical face of online politics. They describe the ways in which hacktivism has re-appropriated hacking techniques to create an innovative new form of political protest. A full explanation is given of the different strands of hacktivism and the 'cyberwars' it has created, ranging from such avant garde groups as the Electronic Disturbance Theatre to more virtually focused groups labelled 'The Digitally Correct'. The full social and historical context of hacktivism is portrayed to take into account its position in terms of new social movements, direct action and its contribution to the globalization debate.

This book provides an important corrective flip-side to mainstream accounts of E-commerce and broadens the conceptualization of the internet to take into full account the other side of the digital divide.

Code Talker: The First and Only Memoir , by One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII, by Chester Nez, Judith Schiess Avila

The first and only memoir by one of the original Navajo code talkers of WWII.

His name wasn’t Chester Nez. That was the English name he was assigned in kindergarten. And in boarding school at Fort Defiance, he was punished for speaking his native language, as the teachers sought to rid him of his culture and traditions. But discrimination didn’t stop Chester from answering the call to defend his country after Pearl Harbor, for the Navajo have always been warriors, and his upbringing on a New Mexico reservation gave him the strength—both physical and mental—to excel as a marine.

During World War II, the Japanese had managed to crack every code the United States used. But when the Marines turned to its Navajo recruits to develop and implement a secret military language, they created the only unbroken code in modern warfare—and helped assure victory for the United States over Japan in the South Pacific.

Review
“Gripping in its narrative, Code Talker is history at its best.”—Colonel Cole C. Kingseed, U.S. Army (Ret.), co-author of Beyond Band of Brothers: The War Memoirs of Major Dick Winters

“A fascinating inside look at one of WWII’s most closely guarded secrets…This is an important book, a previously untold piece of our history.”—Marcus Brotherton, author of Shifty’s War

“You don’t need to be a fan of World War II literature to appreciate this memoir…a fascinating melange of combat in the Pacific theater, the history of the Navajo people and the development of a uniquely American code.”—The Associated Press

“A unique, inspiring story by a member of the Greatest Generation.”—Kirkus Reviews

“A remarkably affecting first-person account of the Navajo Marines who served their country with distinction through some of the worst battles of the Pacific theater.”—The Washington Times

From the Author
I met my friend, Navajo code talker Chester Nez, more than four years ago.  Writing Chester's memoir has changed both of our lives for the better.   I have gained a second family, and Chester is pleased that people will know the story of himself and his fellow Navajos, the WWII code talkers.  It is a story that remained a secret for too long.  We hope that you will enjoy reading our book as much as we enjoyed writing it!!

The book's dedication says a lot about the focus of the book and Chester's desire to have all code talkers recognized:

This book is dedicated to the 420 World War II Navajo Marine code talkers - men who developed and implemented an unbreakable communications system that helped ensure the American defeat of the Japanese in the Pacific War.

When the war ended, other combatants were free to discuss their roles in the service and to receive recognition for their actions.  But the Marines instructed us, the code talkers, to keep our accomplishments secret. We kept our own counsel, hiding our deeds from family, friends and acquaintances.  Our code was finally declassified in 1968, twenty-three years after the war's end.

This book may be my story, but it is written for all of these men.

May they and their loved ones walk in beauty.

About the Author
Chester Nez was a World War II veteran who indispensably served his country as a Navajo code talker. He passed away in 2014.

Judith Schiess Avila is a code talker scholar with the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities Chautauqua Program. She tours the state giving presentations on the topic.

Be very careful ....
By VMF214
I can only advise prospective readers to be very careful if you have work that has to be done ... you will NOT want to put this book down once you start reading. As a former high school teacher I wish that this book was required reading for every teen. The work ethic, dedication, and moral character demonstrated by Chester Nez is genuinely inspirational. I learned a great deal about the Navajo culture and values, and how these values were integral to their success in battle, and their entire life. The campaigns on Guadalcanal, Guam, Peleliu and Bougainville owe a great deal of their success to the actions of the Navajo Code Talkers. Many of the code talkers have gone to their reward unable to relate their invaluable contribution to winning the war in the Pacific. We, as Americans, are truly fortunate that Chester Nez finally told the story of these incredible individuals.

Semper Fi, Chester ... I can only hope that some day I may have the honor of meeting you.

A rare book
By Toe Tag
If you are looking for a one of a kind history book this is it. There really is only one book written by a Code Talker and this book he explains how the famous talkers where formed and where they served.

One of the more interesting aspects of this book concerns the man’s life and culture. The author spends a lot of time explaining Navaho traditions and beliefs. He does a priceless job of interweaving this into the history of the second world war. This is truly what makes his book special. I enjoyed these moments learning about the Navaho as much as I enjoyed the sections dealing with the war in eh Pacific.

None-the-less a sense of modesty of the author leaves out specific details regarding his personal performance in the war. But he showers his contemporaries with praise for their action. I would have liked more detail about the specific battles. This may be a cultural thing as he says his people are very private people who do not boast of their personal accomplishments.

This book has a priceless place in history. I was amazed to find that native American languages had been used in WWI to confuse to Germans. However, they were not used to a higher level until World War Two.

There are many great personal accounts of World War Two. But there really isn’t anything to compare this one to. It is really the only book written by a Code Talker. If you want to know more about the war in the Pacific in general I would recommend, “With the Old Breed,” by E.B. Sledge an, “Helmet for my Pillow,“ by Robert Leckie. Both of these men fought in battles that would have had code talkers serving win the ranks.

Important reminder
By Eagletree
I have a special appreciation of such memoirs that show how it was for those who served in not only the adversity of war, but of culture differences, there are too few. They are great reminders of the changes that WWII started in our society and continued through the 80s before the inevitable ebb of diversity began to swing the other direction. It's important to remember the contributions to freedom that native americans, blacks, hispanics, and even Japanese-Americans made.

Do not expect 100% accuracy for the flow of battles and such. That is not the intent of this book, it is one mans remembrance of how things went. The more important part is his role, and you won't find a more detailed place to see the code-talkers role explained.

Throughout my lifetime, I've poured over the accounts of the marine assaults, and in every one, the code-talkers appear as a crucial element, finally I actually get insight into their story specifically. I was impressed with the Corps too, for recognizing and nurturing a winning talent and capability. It showed yet another bit of the foresight of some top Marines for innovation (something I've often noted in the Marines WWII attempts to go outside the box).

The Present: The Gift for Changing Times, by Spencer Johnson M.D.

For over two decades, Spencer Johnson has been inspiring readers with his simple yet profound stories of the challenges we face in these times of unprecedented change.

The Present is an engaging story of a young man’s journey to adulthood, and his tireless search for The Present, a mysterious and elusive gift he first hears about from a wise old man.  This Present, according to the old man, is the most valuable gift a person can receive.  Why? Because it is the one thing that doesn’t change in changing times.

As the young boy becomes a man, he grows disillusioned with his work and his life.  So he returns to ask the old man to help him find The Present. The old man responds, “Only you have the power to find The Present for yourself.” Heeding the old man’s advice, the young man embarks on a worldwide search for this magical gift that remains unchanging in a changing world, and holds the secret to personal happiness and lifelong success.

It is only after the young man has searched high and low and all but given up his relentless pursuit that he discovers The Present—and all of the promises it offers.

Like the young man, you may find that it is the best gift you can ever give to yourself — and to those you care about.

Before the Story

Late one afternoon, Bill Green received an urgent phone call from Liz Michaels, who he used to work with.

She had heard Bill was experiencing great success, and she got right to the point, "Could I meet with you soon?" she asked. He thought he heard strain in her voice.

Bill said yes and rearranged his schedule so they could meet for lunch the next day. When Liz entered the restaurant, he noticed how tired she looked.

After some small talk and ordering their meals, Liz told him, "I have Harrison's job now."

"Congratulations," Bill said. "I'm not surprised you've been promoted."

"Thanks, but the problems are mounting," she admitted.

"A lot has changed since you were with us. We have fewer people, but more work. There never seems to be enough time to get everything done - at work or at home.

"And I'm just not enjoying life as much as I'd like to.

"By the way, Bill," she added, changing the subject, "you look good."

"I am good," he said. "I'm enjoying my work and life more. It's a nice change for me!"

"Oh?" she said. "Did your job change?"

Bill laughed. "No, but if feels like it. It all came together about a year ago."

"What happened?" Liz wanted to know.

Bill began, "Remember how hard I used to push myself and others to get good results? And how much time and effort it took us to get things done?"

Liz laughed. "I remember all too well."

Bill smiled, as though amused by his old behavior. "Well I've learned a few things. And so have many other people in my department. We're getting better results, faster and with less stress.

"And to top it off, I'm enjoying life more."

"What's happened?" Liz asked.

"If I told you, you probably wouldn't believe it."

"Try me," she replied.

He paused and then said, "I heard a story from a good friend of mine. It turned out to be a real gift. In fact, the story is called The Present."

"What is it about?" Liz inquired.

"It's a story about a young man who discovers a way to live and work that makes him happier and more successful.

"After I heard it, I thought a lot about the story and how I could benefit from using it. I started using what I learned, first at work and then later in my personal life. It had a big impact on me, and others began to notice.

"Like the young man in the story, I'm happier now, and I'm doing better."

"How?" Liz asked. "In what way?"

"Well, I now concentrate better on what I am doing. I learn more from what happens, and I'm able to plan better. I can focus now on getting the more important things done, without taking so long to do them."

"You got all that out of one story?" Liz seemed amazed.

"Well that's what I got out of the story. Different people get different things from The Present, depending on where they are in their work or life when they hear it. Of course, some people just don't get it at all.

"The story is a practical parable," Bill continued. "So it's not just what's in the story. It's what you take out of it that gives it value."

Liz asked, "Can you tell it to me?"

Bill sipped his glass of water and then said slowly, "Liz I hesitate because you've always seemed to be so skeptical. And this is the type of story you might dismiss too easily."

At that point, Liz let her guard down. She confessed that she was under a great deal of stress, in her job and personal life, and had come to lunch hoping to get some help.

Bill remembered when he felt that way.

Liz said, "I really want to hear the story."

Bill had always liked and respected Liz. So he said, "I'd be happy to tell it to you, if you agree that what you get and use from the story is up to you.

"And," he added, "If you find it useful, that you will share it with others."

Liz agreed and Bill continued. "When I first heard it, I realized at some point in the story that there was a great deal more to it than I had anticipated.

"I found myself taking notes throughout the story to help me remember the insights I might want to use later."

Liz wondered what she might fine useful for herself. She took out a small notepad and said, "I'm ready to listen."

Then Bill began to tell the story of The Present.

The Sacred Valley: A guide for growing leaders with a deep, bold, consequential faith in Jesus Christ, by Peggy Hahn

This is our watch and leadership makes all the difference. You and I are called to lead the Christian movement forward in our own small way—even as we search to find the path ourselves. In this book, you will discover four primary behaviors that effectively shift our mindset as leaders and prepare our faith communities for leadership in a changing world. It is written for leaders (pastors, youth ministers and congregational councils) to use with their teams to strategically focus on behaviors known to help people and communities grow. This is different from the usual process of setting goals or identifying outcomes. These behaviors produce contextually relevant results based on the leadership and location. Practicing these four behaviors will lead you on a faith pilgrimage that will produce a future we are unable to fully imagine right now. We believe everyone and every congregation can grow. Growth is a choice that recognizes Christian leadership is really discipleship, with leaders growing other leaders. This book is an attempt to answer the question, “What does it mean to grow leaders with a deep, bold, consequential faith during the greatest cultural shifts that have ever taken place in our world?” Our research indicates that the difference between growing and stalled leaders and faith communities rests in how these growth indicators are turned into behaviors. These specific adaptive practices will help leaders shape the path from a beloved traditional church to those with deep, bold, consequential faith. As an organization, the LEAD Team is prepared to accompany leaders through this process. The book is written to be accessible to both leaders who want a quick read and to those that want to study behavior change in a deeper way. It can also be used by teams of people for a shared journey. Welcome to life in The Sacred Valley. We can do this!

Well written & inviting book that focuses on helping us understand what God is asking us to do in our rapidly changing world.
By Rick from DE
Peggy Hahn is an excellent writer. Her book is well written, challenging look at what ails many churches today...the lack of leaders that are deep, bold and consequential and not afraid to self assess religious traditions that may be getting in the way of what God is asking us to do in today's rapidly changing world. After all, as she so aptly highlights, it is not our church, but rather God's church and mission. The book builds off her LEAD (Living Every Day as Disciples) studies and uses her trek to Machu Picchu as a framework to introduce new concepts and ideas. I found the book inviting me to join her on a journey of change for our church built on faith of a loving God. Well worth the read.

Demands on Leadership in a Modern Church
By Paul Good
A good discussion of practical aspects of church leadership types and indications of how to approach invigorating congregations to better achieve their missions. This material is backed by extensive, current research of where many congregations are today and how they are being affected by the society changing around them. We are in this for the long haul: our congregations need to provide faith forming cultures to equip people to live their faith as part of all aspects of their lives. I think Peggy provides useful insight on what this demands of church leadership and how to evaluate next steps to get there.

Sixteen-year-old Miro had instructions to kill the bus driver immediately.

They would then take the busload of children to the bridge and begin the standoff. Artkin was Miro’s mentor; the mastermind behind this act of terrorism that would get the world’s attention.
But Artkin had told Miro that the bus driver would be an old man.

Sixteen-year old Kate sometimes substituted for her uncle and drove his bus when he was ill. She even got a special license to do so, and she’d always liked kids. She wondered what was going on when the van in front of her stopped, but when the man and the boy with guns forced their way onto the bus, she knew her worst nightmare was beginning.

I keep thinking that I have a tunnel in my chest. The path the bullet took, burrowing through the flesh and sinew and whatever muscle the bullet encountered (I am not the macho-muscled type, not at five eleven and one hundred eighteen pounds). Anyway, the bullet went through my chest and out again. The wound has healed and there is no pain. The two ends of the tunnel are closed although there's a puckering of the skin at both ends of the tunnel. And a faint redness. The puckering has a distinct design, like the old vaccination scar on my father's arm. Years from now, the wound will probably hurt the way my father's old wounds hurt him, the wounds he received in those World War Two battles. My mother always jokes about the wounds: oh, not the wounds themselves but the fact that he professes to forecast weather by the phantom pains and throbbings in his arms and legs.

Will my wound ache like his when I am his age?

And will I be able to tell when the rain will fall by the pain whistling through the tunnel in my chest?

I am joking, of course, but my joking is entirely different from my mother's tender jokes.

I am joking because I won't have stayed around become a human barometer or an instrument capable of forecasting weather.

But - who's the joke on?

The first of many questions about my presence here.

Keep a scorecard handy.

My father is scheduled to visit me today.

His first visit since the Bus and the Bridge last summer.

I am typing this in the room at Castle and it's beautiful here as I write this. Through the window, I can see the quadrangle and the guys indulging in a snowball fight. The first snowfall of the season. The snow is late this year. Christmas is only two weeks away. Thanksgiving was dry and cold with a pale sun in the sky but no wind. Perfect for a football game, the traditional game between Castle and Rushing Academy. Castle won, 21 to 6, and there was a big celebration on campus. Elliot Martingale brought these fireworks back from summer vacation; they were left over from July 4th at his family's place on Cape Cod, and he said they would be touched off when we won the big game on Thanksgiving Day. We won, he set them off. Beautiful. That's when I went to the john, swallowed fourteen sleeping pills, lay down on the bed listening to the cherry bombs explode and then a cluster of firecrackers going off like a miniature machine gun; and it was nice lying there, drifting away, and then I thought of the kids on the bus, strewn around like broken toys while the guns went off, and I started getting sick and rushed off to the bathroom to vomit.

Please do not consider these the notes of a self-pitying freak who needs the services of a psychiatrist.

I am not filled with pity for myself. And I'm not writing this to cop a plea of some kind.

I do not consider this a suicide note either.

Or even a prelude to one.

When the time comes to perform the act, I will do it without any prelude or prologue, and may simply walk up River Road one afternoon, arrive at Brimmler's Bridge, calmly climb the parapet or whatever it's called, and let myself plummet to the riverbed below.

I have deduced, reflecting on the Bus, that this would be the best way to shuffle off this mortal coil. Poetic justice, you see. Perhaps that's what I should have done when I was sent out to the Bus. The Bus was also on a bridge. That's when I should have taken the plunge, the dive, or the leap. The Bridge on which the Bus was perched is even higher than Brimmler's Bridge. Just think how I would have saved the day - and myself - that way.

And my father most of all.

But how many times is a person allowed to die?

Anyway, my parents are scheduled to arrive here late this morning.

Eleven o'clock to be exact.

My father's first visit since the Bus and the Bridge, but I already said that, didn't I?

My mother has been faithful about visiting. My mother is kind and witty and stylish. She is the essence of the loving wife and mother. She has such amazing strength, an inner strength that has nothing to do with the flexing of muscles. I always sensed it, even as a kid. My father has strength, too. But he has always been too shadowy to pin down. The nature of his profession, I realize now. His is the kind of profession that not only disguises the man but consumes him as well. And his family, too. Even my mother, with all her strength.

When she visited me the first time in September only a few days after my arrival, she played it cool and calm, and this is just what I needed

"Do you want to talk about it, Mark?" she asked.

My name is Ben, my father's name is Mark. If it had been anyone but her, I would have called it a Freudian slip. But she is too uncomplicated for that kind of thing.

I wondered how much she knew about what happened on the bridge. "I'd rather not talk about it," I said. "Not just yet."

"Fine," she said, matter-of-factly, settling down for the visit, arranging her dress over her knees. She has beautiful legs and she is utterly feminine. She never wears slacks or pants suits, always skirts or dresses, even when she does housecleaning. She asked me about school and the classes and the guys, and I told her, talking mechanically, as if my mouth had nothing to with the rest of my body. I told her about Mr. Chatham, who is my math teacher and might have taught my father a generation ago. This is one of the benefits of attending your father's alma mater, my mother said, when she drove me up here last fall. She said I would be able to gather new insights on my father. I didn't tell her that Mr. Chatham is practically senile, the butt of a thousand boyish and not-so-boyish pranks and jokes, and that he didn't remember my father at all. I had suggested the possibility to him. "My name is Ben Marchand," I'd told him, "and my father came to Castle back before World War Two - do you remember him?"

"Of course, dear boy," he said, "of course."

But I did not believe him. His eyes were glazed and vacant, his hand shook, and he always seems about to leap out of harm's way. Which is reflex action. Guys like Elliot Martingale and Biff Donateli rejoice in making old Catham's last days lively. We keep him on his toes, keep him sharp, keep him from dropping into complete senility, Elliot says. How can a man drop out when he thinks a cherry bomb's going to go off in his pants any minute?

Anyway, I started to lie to my mother about Mr. Chatham and his nonexistent memories of my father. "He remember Dad as a good student," I said. "Serious. Never fooled around much in class. A shy, sensitive lad: those were his exact words." I tried to imitate Mr. Chatham's rusty old voice: "A little too thin for his height, lad, but you could see he would fill out someday and be an outstanding man."

I could see immediately that she didn't believe me. She has many admirable qualities but she would never succeed as an actress.  The disbelief was apparent in her eyes and in the expression on her face.

"Isn't Dad sensitive and wasn't he a good student?" I asked. "He must have been. He's a general now, isn't he?"

"You know your father doesn't like to be called a general," she said.

"True," I said, and felt myself drifting away from her, something I have been doing recently, drifting away while standing still, letting myself go as if the world is a huge blotter and I am being absorbed by it. "But he is a general, isn't he?" I asked, persisting, suddenly not wanting to drift away, not at this particular moment, wanting to make a point. What point?

And then my mother's strength asserted itself. "Ben," she said, her voice like the snapping of a tree branch. It reminded me of old movies on television where someone is screaming hysterically but I must admit that I was hysterical all right. You can be hysterical without screaming or ranting and raving, or hitting your head against a wall. You can be quietly hysterical sitting in a dorm talking to your mother, watching the September sun climbing the wall like a ladder as it filters in through a sagging shutter. And the slap doesn't have to be a physical act; it can be one word, Ben, your own name lashing out. Yet she did it with love. I have always been assured of her love. And even as I responded to her shouted Ben, snapping me back from the drifting, I still said to myself: But he is a goddam general, whether he likes it or not, and that's why I'm here.

So we carried on a fairly normal conversation. About my classes, the guys: Yes, Mother, they're a good bunch. They leave me alone, mostly because I've come on the scene too late and it's hard to absorb me (they are not blotters, after all), but they are tactful, which surprised me really. I mean, Elliot Martingale is such a character with his clowning and all, and yet he came up to me the other day and said: "Marchand, old bastard, I looked up the back issues of the papers the other day and you're all right, know that?"

I felt either like bawling like a baby or laughing madly; either way, he'd think I was a complete nut. I felt like bawling because those were the first words anyone at Castle had said directly to me and they confirmed my existence here, something I was beginning to doubt. Until that moment, I might have been invisible or not there at all. And I felt like laughing madly because what Martingale said was so very wrong. What Elliot Martingale read about in the papers, my part in the Bus and the incident at the Bridge, was a million miles from the truth. Not lies exactly, of course. But information that was misleading, vague where it should be specific, specific where it should be vague. Inner Delta is very good at that sort of thing, of course.

There, I've said it: Inner Delta

Like pulling a bandage off a festering sore.

Or a disease...

What is evil really?
By Nicole Rega
What is evil really? Who are the good guys and who are the bad? That's what this book makes you thinks. It shows you that sometimes life doesn't go the way you want it.
I also liked how Miro was shown. Was he really a monster or just thinking the way he'd been taught all he life? Letting you get to know Miro,Ben,Raymond, and Kate also shows how unfair life is and sometimes the bad guys do win. Also the part with Ben and his dad,and what he made him do,though a bit confusing, was a great counter plot. This book was wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone.
