This book provides a large set of applications that is based on the theory of communication complexity developed by Yao et. al. The material addresses important domains such as covers, randomization and other advanced topics related to two-party communication complexity.
The sections that I found completely interesting are: randomization versus determinism, distributional complexity, protocol rounds and asymmetric communications.
A very enlightening section on communication with partial information is well-presented and explained with examples and exercises. The chapters on "Multiparty Communication Complexity", "Variable Partition Models", and "Networks & VLSI" are exceptionally informative. These chapters provide the mathematical foundation required for the study of several practical systems. For example, the time and area parameters, usually encountered in VLSI design problems, are discussed and a theoretically- efficient chip layout schema is proposed.
The book is radically distinctive and without equal. It provides a large number of applications, examples, and exercises to assist the reader grasp the concepts of the theory of communication complexity.
It is a valuable asset for researchers in computer science, computer engineering and information theory.

I read this book for breakfast.

Another solid release from Markus Almond. This book has a generous mix of one or two sentence calls to action and more invoking vignettes, much like his previous releases. What's special is that the intentional universality of the content is still easily relatable to whatever is on your mind when reading, which is great for those with a head full of thoughts and ideas. I also really appreciate Markus dedicating a chapter to money, a topic that can often get lost in the rush of inspiration.

Not just a noir

I was not sure I wanted to read this book. It has a reputation as a 'portrait of a serial killer,' and that does not appeal to me; but this strange pulp novel did. It is a 'Texas tale,' very Southern, about the standards that uphold society, and that society upholds, sometimes to the detriment of truth:

“Bruises?” I said. “Gosh, you got me there, Howard. How would I know?”
“H-how”—he sputtered—“how would you know?”
“Yeah?” I said, puzzled. “How?”
“Why, goddam you! You’d been screwing that gal for years! You—”
“Don’t say that,” I said.
“No,” said Jeff Plummer, “don’t say that.”

There is a running gag that deadpan platitudes are as bad as a punch in the gut:

Rothman got up and put on his hat. “Well, I can’t find it in my heart to chide you for the stunt, despite its unfortunate outcome. I almost wish I’d thought of it.”
“Aw,” I said, “it wasn’t nothing much. Just a matter of a will finding a way.”
“Ooof!” he said. “What are Conway’s feelings, by the way?”
“Well, I don’t think he feels real good,” I said.
“Probably something he ate,” he nodded. “Don’t you imagine? But watch that stuff, Lou. Watch it. Save it for those birds.”
He left.

Thompson wants us to know that although Lou Ford is not as dumb as everyone thinks he is, he is also not as clever as he tells us he is. The fact is, his form of irony is pretty low grade:

I debated calling up the newspapers and complimenting them on their “accuracy.” I often did that, spread a little sunshine, you know, and they ate it up. I could say something—I laughed—I could say something about truth being stranger than fiction. And maybe add something like—well—murder will out. Or… the best laid plans of mice and men.

New Fan

I've been tearing through Jim Thompson books recently, having just discovered them. Can't get enough. They have some common themes. Each is very dark. Principle characters are unsympathetic (and in the case of Killer, he is flat out detestable), yet they are still compelling because you want to see what they try to get away with next. The first person narrative is smart, edgy and authentic.

Many have aptly compared Killer to Pop 1280. But, Killer is darker. It is also a more complete story, delving into enough backstory to give us a greater understanding of who Lou Ford is. It also has a great ending, whereas Pop 1280 doesn't end so much as stop abruptly. Even so, the humor of Pop 1280 made it slightly more enjoyable for me. My recommendation: Read both.

Like other Thompson books, Killer is quite violent. Yet it is never gratuitous. We don't get a graphic description of every drop of blood. The book is not so much about the violence as it is about the psychology of the man who commits it. Even so, it is shocking and disturbing, and always compelling.

I've seen these books described as pulp fiction, but I hope the new reader is not dissuaded by that. These are not sordid crime dramas. Well, I suppose they are, but they are also so much more. Pick one and read the first chapter and see if you aren't hooked.

A deep look at a complex killer

I got interested in Jim Thompson as an author after reading in the New York Times Book Review that he was a favorite of Bruce Springsteen. This book was totally engrossing, written simply but with plenty of underlying complexity and suspense-building incompleteness that compelled me to read on. Written from the point of view of a highly intelligent psychopath passing as a normal but dull deputy sheriff, it presents in story-form a brilliant first person portrait of this kind of psychological chameleon who is compelled by his nature into serial, intensely violent murders. Hints of his traumatic past round out the story, and the main character's backstory and desires for normality that will appeal to fans of the "Dexter" TV series. I gave it only four stars because Thompson's sophisticated holding back of information and subtlety of clues slowed me down at times as I had to go back and reread for plot points. However, now that I know this is his style and device, letting the truth dawn on the reader rather than spelling it out, I will enjoy his next books more, and I've already started the next one! This was required text for my class and I can see why. Every cinematographer should have this book with them. Especially if you're learning how to build film cameras. There is a lot of important information in this book.

EXCELLENT ,BRILLIANT AND A REAL HELP

I have bought this book in 1995 and it was a real help for me.I live in greece and most of the times d.o.p. stands as a camera operator too.I have made lot's of films since then but there was two of them with second-hand 16 mm Eclair bought from two old filmakers.(no operators manual in it and i have never heard this machines before!).As cinematographers know, many things depend of the expirience someone have on specific equipment that is using.this cameras was one Npr and one Acl (S16patend).My assistand get scared when he saw the Acl!! I JUST GIVE HIM THE BOOK AND EVERYTHING GO PERFECT!! THE AUTHOR IS A REAL PRO AND WE GET TOO THRU HIS KNOWLEDGE.THANK YOU.

Love's path does change

Saul gets to have his story told. We all know how hard Saul has worked at keeping Juan, Cruz and him self alive. We find out some core information on the friendship and brotherhood between Saul, Juan and Cruz. This story is short but packs so much into it!

Saul lost his Entwined in the most horrible of ways, through the shear combined force of Juan and Cruz, they manage to save Saul. Saul believes that he will never find his love again.

Or will he? Read and find out!

To know the characters you must start at the beginning!

Love will always find its way, no matter the path it needs to take.

Quick story but good from start to finish.
We get the backstory of Saul's entwined, Julia and what happened to her. Also showing a younger Saul and Juan's life at the time.
You also see how he meets Jade and eventually falls in love with her. They enjoy a healthy bit of kink and that was steamy.
I loved Juan, Noah and Peppa's wedding and the surprise.
I look forward to Cruz's book.

Saul's Book !!! Truly fantastic story !!!

The next band member finally gets his story. And what a story the author gives us.
Saul is part of the band Rock the Viper which has himself, his brother Juan and Cruz.
They are all Vampires. Saul lost his entwined and has lived a life of misery. That Is until he meets Jade at a nightclub. Jade gives Saul what he needs and craves. It helps that she also likes to get a Lil bit freaky in the bedroom. In this book the author takes us back in history and gives us a lot of back story which helps in learning about Saul and his lost entwined and how Cruz plays apart in their lives.

Can’t wait for the next book in this series! I love this series but to me this was the BEST so far.

A little dissapointed

While the book provided lots of good general background information, it really didn't offer me any useful information regarding what I can do for me personally.

Read this book

As a husband and father I believe that this book has helped me understand better the issues that are within a female's sexuality. I strongly recommend reading it as a man wanting to support women in his life. Wives, futures, daughters, and maybe girl friends could stand to have this dropped on a night stand, in a gift bag, or handed out around "the talk".

I read it to my wife and we both found it informative. It helped clear up old hang ups and regrets as well as show itself as a great resource for the squeamish when trying to be proactive with children's sexuality issues. For Christians/Religious types (we are) it will stretch you a bit but having done the research and investigating it passes the James Dobson sniff test. Can't say that all other will agree but for what it is worth it has helped my teen through 20's daughters say "No" and not feel like they are missing out.

The focus is making YOU the focus and knowing YOURSELF before worrying about pleasing OTHERS. Is that selfish? Absolutely not! You are no good to anyone if you are broken or falling down. Even the airlines tell you to put your own mask on first! Yes, it goes there. M is encouraged and NO, you will not find Biblical verses in the New or Old Testament(Female/Torah) addressing it. Great for singles, married, teens, husbands, fiances, or anyone trying to understand. I my humble opinion a good man will educate himself so he can be a better partner, husband, and father. Just saying.

Norman Cohn's book 'The Pursuit of the Millennium' is a classic work for a reason: it is outstanding history and well written. Like most very good histories, it illuminates the past and has implications for the present as well.

Cohn's topic is 'Millenarianism' in the Middle Ages, or the recurring emergence of a collective of "faithful" under the leadership of a charismatic prophet (or prophets) who believe that the world will imminently be transformed into an earthly paradise inhabited by the "select" (i.e., themselves). This Edenic existence will last 1,000 years and then the Last Judgement will forever sort all mankind into the camps of Heaven and Hell. The basis of the millennial paradigm is rooted in the Book of Daniel (Ch. VII: Daniel's Dream) and the Book of Revelation (Ch. XX), as well as the enduring legend that there could be a return to what was wishfully assumed to be mankind's original egalitarian and plentiful existence.

Millenarianism flourished in the Middle Ages in response to anxious and disorienting social conditions, such as rapid population growth and widespread agricultural failures in the High Middle Ages and the Black Death of the Late Middle Ages. The most fervent followers were the marginalized poor whose place within the social structure and whose very survival was under threat. A prophet, who assumed the role of messiah, offered the poor a chance to be among the "select" or elite.

Cohn surveys a series of Millenarian outbreaks, from the poor's participation in the First Crusade (c. 1100), to the English Peasants' Revolt (1381), to the Hussite Rebellion, and it's offspring, the Taborites of Bohemia (c. 1425), to the German Peasants' War fostered by Thomas Müntzer (c.1525), and through the Anabaptist Revolt at Munster (c. 1530).

Perhaps no one made better use of these parallels between the Middle Ages' phenomenon and more recent history than Friedrich Reck did in his novella A History of the Münster Anabaptists: Inner Emigration and the Third Reich: A Critical Edition of Friedrich Reck-Malleczewen's Bockelson: A Tale of Mass Insanity (an edition which also includes background commentary and critical exposition).

Cohn concludes his book with reference to the present, where he claims the enduring underpinnings of millenarianism continue to exist in secular forms.

These characters make Mad Max look like a sissy.

This is a wild book. It describes dark times when people are in despair. At these times, and it happens repeatedly, someone decides that he is the Redeemer of the weak. These redeemers create havoc, until the ruling powers decide to put an end to the disturbance.
This is fascinating, little-known history of Europe. These folks make Mad Max look like a sissy. This is mean and it is all true.

What Happens When New Agers Run the World

"Absolutely astounding... when people fantasize about ideal worlds and the "end of days", their thinking usually get disjointed rather fast. Never did this form of thinking run more prevalent and have such catastrophic consequences than between the 11th and the 15th Cen. This is a collection of some of the most obscure peasant cults and peasant wars that afflict mankind during the middle ages. The results were usually bloody, such as the rebellion of Thomas Muntzer in early 1500s. But what is more interesting is how such thinking of millinearian societies can be extrapolated into the 20th Cen (Hitler & Stalin) and latterly, the an altogether less emphatic form, the Fukuyama thesis that "History has Ended" -- A very good read indeed ! Maybe the best book for 2010 for me. "

As a side Note is interesting that Cohn's book serves as the seminal study of millenarian thinking in general and is often used as a counterpoint in the studies of Marxism, Fascism, and the millenial dreams of the neocons and infantile understanding of the New Agers, and conspiracy theorists... it's all here. A warning what happens when man and womenkind lose their common sense and believe that the ideal is possible.

Absolutely astounding read... a good warning for the present times when ideologues and conspiracy theorists and their ignorant ilk seem to be all around us....

"The Golden Age" for the price of steerage

This book should please every lover of the "Era of the Passenger Liner". Packed, wall to wall, with vintage images of the greatest ships to ever embark on ocean travel its a real feast for the eyes. As the title suggests, the focus here is largely on those ships in service from the early Teens to the late Thirties - "The Golden Age". This mode of transport never quite regained its luster after the the Second World War. I know there are certainly some exceptions to that statement but the elegance and mystique that surrounded passenger liner travel would never be the same. Many of today's cruise ships are impressive in their own right but they don't appeal to one's imagination the way a Titanic, Mauretania, Queen Mary or Normandie can. This collection does not attempt a thorough representation of all the ships of the era but rather focuses on the most important ships with an in-depth treatment of each. If you are looking for technical information or extensive history this is not the book to provide it. It is, however, a valuable photographic archive that should appeal to both the serious enthusiast and the casual observer alike.

This book is solidly constructed in a very utilitarian fashion (no frills here). It has the customary, illustrated, glossy covers that are now ubiquitous on books in this price range. All images are, as one would expect, black and white. For the price, this book delivers real value. One very minor quibble - I would have liked to seen them dress up the presentation with a dust jacket. I know they were traveling economy class here but, given the subject matter, a little nod to elegance wouldn't hurt.

Ullmann and Taschen are proving themselves to be the Toyotas of the publishing business. They provide well produced, affordable books on contemporary and traditional topics that don't price-out the working stiff. Without consciously doing so, I find that more and more of my purchases carry their imprints. This is just the latest example.

Far Away Horses by Buck Brannaman; The Adventures and Wisdom of One of America's Most Renowned Horsemen
God allows some people to travel through the really tough, dark and desperate trials to keep His rewards with special gifts to take into the world to bless and heal others. Buck is the real deal.
Buck has several gifts which he uses to touch the lives of horses and people with his teaching, his experience, and his character. Horses have a unique being and a way like very few animals and one can learn a lot about themselves and others by and through them. This book is a great read. It is a true story mostly about Buck and his brother, how they grew up severely absued, and how special foster parents, ranch life in Montana and I'm sure lots of horse love conquered and made Buck the man he is today and what he has done with his "gift". It gives the reader inspiration, hope, and teaches life lessons to live by while touching the human heart, spirit, and soul of both horse and rider on so many levels. It is sure to touch and bless you. The world needs more "Horse Whispers" like Buck Brannaman's. I wish to one day be able to meet and work with Buck. I have read his other book "Believe" which is a collaboration of stories of how Buck's teaching and lessons with students horses have done much more for their owners.

great book

I would give this book and its contents a 10 STAR rating. What Buck has done revolutionized horse training and mankind's understanding of the mind and personality of horses. His own background of abuse helped him see the same things being done to terrorize and abuse animals/horses. His work and kindness to horses developed an understanding and trust between beasts and their owners that is of tremendous importance to all who work with horses or who love to see and appreciate their beauty.

While working with horses, he learned how to work with different personalities of people and how to treat his fellowman/woman as well. Well done Buck. Your life's work is invaluable and will last for centuries.

P.S. I am not a horse owner nor a particularly great horse lover. I just loved how he came to understand and treat horses. He is a humanitarian.

The enduring wit and wisdom of Mr. Brannaman . . .

If you have no concept of common sense, or right from wrong, you probably won't like this book. Because Mr. Brannaman is a master of common sense, has a clear and ready moral compass that he actually uses, and possesses another quality sorely missing in vast portions of today's society -- integrity -- his books are entertaining while being educational. (The educational part gets slipped in -- no memorization required or sermons given.) I discovered Buck Brannaman when my sister drug me to a movie I'd never heard of called "Buck." I was instantly hooked on all things Brannaman. I'd love to someday be able to attend one of his clinics, even though I don't own horses. We had horses when I was a kid, and I've always had a soft spot for critters of all kinds, but Buck Brannaman's affinity with horses translates to an affinity with all critters, be they 4-legged or 2. A very satisfying read.

About the Author

Debmalya Barh is the Founder and President of the Institute of Integrative Omics and Applied Biotechnology (IIOAB), India, and a consultant biotechnologist having international repute. He is an active researcher in multidisciplinary “omics” fields that include biomarkers, target and targeted drug discovery, pharmacogenomics, neutrigenomics, neuroscience, cancer, and cardiovascular, infectious, and metabolic diseases. He works with nearly 300 researchers from 18 to 20 countries and has published more than 100 papers. He is a well known editor for many research reference books in the foremost domains of “Omics” published by top-ranked international publishers.
Dipali Dhawan is a promising researcher in the field of Pharmacogenomics, and Induced Pluripotent and Cancer Stem Cells. A postgraduate in Molecular and Genetic Medicine from University of Sheffield, UK and a PhD in Biotechnology from Nirma University, India, Dr. Dhawan is presently associated with the Institute of Life Sciences, Ahmedabad University,  India. She has published many research works and has also been awarded CSIR and DST fellowships.

Prof. Nirmal Kumar Ganguly is a distinguished Biotechnology Research Professor, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), GoI. He is the President of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), as well as that of the Asian Institute of Public Health, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He is the former Director General of ICMR, New Delhi, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, and National Institute of Biologicals (NIB), Noida. He has published 757 research papers.  His major areas of research have been Tropical Diseases, Cardiovascular Diseases and Diarrhoeal Diseases. He has received 116 Awards, including 6 International and 110 National Awards. He has been honored with the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award by Her Excellency, the President of India on 26th January 2008 in the field of “Medicine”.
